    So what does it mean that this recommendation is sponsored by the developer/game? I trust Marty and want to assume this is just a sincere recommendation. Yet the sponsorship communicates paid ad.
    EDIT: Please no one view this as an indictment of the game or advertising. You gotta get your work out there and I hope this helps the developer find more success.

      NOTE: Not commenting at all on the quality of the title or the developer, by the way. Looks nice and seems fun. Just trying to figure out the implications of this kind of content on the Escapist.

      @theescapist  Před 2 lety +21

      The video is paid for, but there was no restriction on the content of the video.
      So it’s just Marty’s thoughts on the game after playing it. I think they’ve just had trouble marketing it, and we probably wouldn’t have looked at it otherwise.

    This was one of my top games this year. Visually interesting, audibly diverse, solid combat, slick controls. The only place it sunk was story being a bit trope-y but that's really forgivable given the depth of game play offered. Left off with a sequel option that I WANT. Easily one of the best metroidvania games since Axiom Verge (which had a decent/almost great sequel come out this year)

    I played it for 2-3 hours on PC. It has good graphics that support ray-tracing and DLSS. It is also fun. But at some point my PC crashed and this completely wiped my save game. It also has wierd framedrops if you enter a new area. At least on PC, it could use more technical polish.

    Good video, but not sure a sponsored video should have such a strong positive title as people can see that without opening the video and seeing its sponsored

    • @theescapist
      @theescapist  Před 2 lety +7

      We’re trying to find a middle ground of doing some sponsored content, but making sure it’s interesting and fits in with the rest of our content.
      We did it with RE4VR and here, and both videos had zero restrictions on the content. Gonna take some tweaking and experimenting, but we’ll figure it out.

    I AM playing it right now and it's really good. Besides what is being said on the video I want to add the ambience. On the chill parts what you explore the city you can hear some cool jazz and the metropolis itself has a great and unique blend of steampunk, neo-neon, 40's, 50's, western Europe and central Asia. Sounds weird but it's well blended.
    Also even though there furries, they're not used in a cringy way, but as to portray social classes and racism without being direct. The story is taken quite seriously.
    Oh, and I like the little homages it plays to Hollow Knight, Dark Souls, Evangelion and Akira, among others

    It was a game that came out of nowhere but was pretty fun, reminded me of Guacamelee when you used the Fist weapon and the way you could combo into your special uppercut attacks etc, setting and story was pretty generic though, maybe I'm just burned out with the "dystopian futuristic city theme" most games seem to go for these days.
    Also maybe it was just me but I found the Drill weapon rather unresponsive, more specifically the X,Y,Y combo it had.

    I tried one of the demos for this that was out during one of the Steam fests, and it felt EXTREMELY janky and I wasn't having any fun with it. gorgeous game though (but I must agree with Siobhan Noble's comment that sexual dimorphism like this in anthro settings where masc characters are just anthropomorphized animals while femme characters are ungodly sex dolls with tails and fur gives me the creeps), and from what I've heard here and elsewhere, it sounds like the full release got a lot more mechanical polish to it since, which is good to hear. though I would like some confirmation from people who've played both that demo and the final release that it has been improved substantially, or if that was just a personal vibe I got while blitzing through a bunch of games that I was interested in (and therefore not having much time to appreciate FIST).

    I saw some bits of gameplay and thought it looked rough. The animation doesn't look great up-close and the artstyle really reminded me of Clid the Snail, which was very disappointing and it felt like part of the reason why was how hard its indie dev had to work to maintain the level of visual fidelity and detail, sacrificing a lot in the process.

    I wanted to play this but it crashed my pc.

  • @QuadfishTym
    @QuadfishTym Před 2 lety

    I tried this game out on a whim and was pretty disappointed. Lots of people are saying it's mechanically well made but that wasn't my experience. Combat in particular just feels slow and sticky. Combos take a long time to execute and most enemies need multiple combos to die, plus they use a lot of freeze-frames on each hit; I think the idea was to make it feel more impactful or cinematic but it just slows the combat pacing down to a crawl. If you're thinking it's petty to be calling out something as minor as "too many freeze frames", I'm mentioning it since the combat overall seems like they were more concerned with having it look good than feel good, and the freeze frames just a small but constant reminder of that.
    Obviously, slow combat on its own is not necessarily a bad thing. Plenty of games force you to go a little slower and plan out your moves; you don't just waltz into e.g. Dark Souls spamming attacks and hoping you'll win. But the problem is it's also not very challenging so there's no incentive to do that and you aren't really forced to master combat. The end result is that most encounters take a long time but don't especially challenge, which gets tedious.
    For context, I love a good metroidvania. If you're into this sort of thing, you've probably played Hollow Knight, which remains my favourite game of all time. If you're expecting the responsiveness of Hollow Knight's combat, FIST is pretty much on the opposite end of that spectrum.

    Apparently it's actually by a fairly large Chinese studio so less Indie than at first appears. Which also becomes apparent when you see it's filesize which dwarfs most other metroidvanias out there although it has the visuals to match. A solid game I'm sure but not one I've found space in my wallet for yet rather than time.

    The writing is ranges from merely generic to painfully cliche. Which isn't the greatest sin if you're the sort to burn past dialogue and get on with smashing faces, but if not... man is it ever hard to actually care about a bunch of stock characters doing their stock roles played entirely straight.... and many are the most cliche versions of their tropes. And it will often sort of rub your face in it.
    That said... I /want/ to like it more. The hong kong noire meets midgar thing has so very much potential, and the attention to detail in, say, the visual design of the city backdrops is great... and is let down entirely by the writing that almost aggressively ignores it.
