*Mrs. B:* "Have you ever been in a situation..."
*Me and Mr. B in unison* "Yes..."
I was recently in a situation where I had a knife, BUT NO ONION...
The straw one would be good for keeping your cup of noodles closed in the microwave.
A little late but I remember a tip from an old Good Eats episode that goes with the apple peeler hack. You can use a drill bit like that to core the apple (or pears, which the episode was using) by just using the bit as it was intended to be used. Just on a fruit rather than wood, and with a smaller diameter bit.
Popcorn Science: What causes corn to pop is a buildup of steam and pressure inside the kernel until it explodes. Conversely, a drier kernel won't pop because it doesn't have enough internal moisture to build up sufficient steam. Soaking your kernels before popping ensures they're properly hydrated, so that with the application of heat, they'll happily explode into the classic movie snack.
With that in mind, if dried kernels were soaked in a flavoured solution before popping, would those kernels absorb the flavour molecules in the solution?
@@GmodPlusWoW Probably not, since flavor molecules are much, much larger than the simple H\o/H of water. If anything, the flavor additives could impede hydration.
I absolutely heard that in the How its Made voice
I like how your comments read like a fun science teacher giving a demonstration
@@CarlGorn That's a pity. Though with that said, I wonder if there are any flavour molecules that are small enough to be absorbed by dry kernels in a solution.
For instance, would glucose and fructose be small enough to be soaked up into a kernel, causing the corn to caramelize in the heat? And if it were possible, would it be any different from kettle corn and caramel corn?
Becky's uncontrollable laughter at working the apple drill peeler made my day.
We need a “have you ever been in the situation” merch.
Mrs Barry: “have you ever been in a situation when you’re spreading peanut butter….”
Me: ….stops spreading peanut butter to listen
😁😁😁
Quick, get it in the freezer...
😂😂😂
This video should be re-titled "Have you ever been in a situation...."
Also about a year ago, Barry said he would tell us a secret about the salt bae thing that he wasnt allowed to say.... and he would let us know in a year. So dish the dirt Baz.
I think not until october or november.
Tis november now Barry!
Take a shot every time Mrs. B says "bendy bit!" Y'all are fun...
My popcorn hack is to keep the popcorn in the freezer. The idea is that the very cold kernels create more steam making for bigger popped kernels. It seems to work.
How where does the extra water come from it will only take longer because its could
@@Moffel_Pier condenstation?
@@DumbArse than throw them in water and they should get huge
@@Moffel_Pier or in a pressure cooker
@@Moffel_Pier popcorn pops because steam is created inside the kernel from the heat. So the cold creates more steam making for a bigger explosion.
Love how much more comfortable Mrs Barry is in front of the camera now, it's so lovely to see 😀
“I guess you could eat it!” Proceeds to fling it on the floor!
lol!
More like "I guess you could y-eat it"
You missed a easy plug there Barry. 🤦🏻♂️ Quick and easy way to chop an onion without a knife... Barry Lewis veggie prep kit
He's not the type to do that tho!!
Guys, I read about that popcorn hack from the comments here ages back. I've been using it forever since! It really does work, supposed to dry them but it seems you don't have to. They come out really fluffy as well! Try that one you won't be left with broken teeth.
A tip with the salt block: it needs to preheat along with the oven! Do not put it into a hot oven or it might crack and split.
MrsB is a hoot in this one. BTW on the straw my calculation is you have to cut it to a length that would allow the bendy bit to be at the center and long enough to hold down half the circumference of the container. I'm sure there is a math whiz out there that can explain it better.
Oh, I just love her! She is so funny! And she's not even trying to be funny. She is just a lovely, lovely Lady. Ya know what? I'm kinda thinking that Barry married up. I think the whole family is just wonderful!
Possible new title for kitchen hacks? : - " What could go wrong ?".
Yeah, really! LOL!
That bit with the apple and the drill was so legendary :D
The phone hack reminded me of another. Put your phone in a ziplock bag to keep liquid out as well.
Now I need to go get some popcorn kernels and try the soaking trick!
Salt blocks are great for cooking and they don't really impart a super salt flavor. Also great to freeze and serve charcuterie...or sushi. Love your channel and when you two do hacks together, you guys crack me up. Cheers!
Thanks a bunch, good tips and info appreciate it
I have a salt block that lives on my BBQ. It gets super hot for searing and gives an amazing char! 🥩🥓🍔😍
@@jatatech consider this technique stolen.
Mrs B saying "Have you ever been in the situation when..." is always a cause for concern
Try the bendy straw again but leave some length both before after the bend so that it actually grasps and bends to the lip on the yogurt pot if that makes sense- so the actual bend sits on the front lip
I think this may be my FAVORITE kitchen hacks video. I'm still laughing at the usual mild mannered Mrs. B gleefully peeling that apple with a twinkle in her eye!!
Re: Popcorn hack... the botanical explanation is that it works because it increases the moisture inside the kernel (like all seeds, it's somewhat breathable and exchanges air and water with the outside world). Soaking them allows more moisture to go into the kernel which is stored in a little pocket in the kernel which when cooked, builds up pressure and explodes, making the popcorn (this is why kernels "expire," they get too dried up so have no steam to explode them)
Didn't a company make peanut butter slices at one time? I think they were wrapped like sliced cheese is. I'm going to have to Google it and make sure I wasn't just remembering wrong 😂😂. Edited to say I looked them up and they came out in 2008 but just kind of disappeared. Thanks for the 💜
I was thinking of those too! 😂
@@Kdaisy47 they kind of looked like some smoked cheese 😂😂
Mrs B has a devious side to her as we have seen in this video and I love it
LOVE IT! You and your lovely wife doing this video together. She's so funny. I love how you two work and communicate together. Great video! You two are so funny together!
Saw the thumbnail & though it must be Barry choosing the hacks….. Mrs B is getting bold!
Thinly sliced steak on a salt block tastes awesome (don't season first) but then ruins the appearance. One for presentation, one for cooking on. Wet things like sliced strawberries take on some saltiness. Do the strawberry test before the block soaks up the meat juice flavour.
I think the popcorn hack works on two fronts. One is that it may soften the husk or shell to make it pop more easily. The other is that if any water seeps inside, it will aid in the internal pressure and pop to make each kernel pop. Popcorn pops because although it seems super dry, it has a tiny amount of water. That water heats up, causing pressure inside the kernel, which pops it.
Oh, the apple peeler is the funniest thing in ages. Please, have Mrs B pick more hacks. Thanks for the fun video.
Question, if I have no knife to cut my onion how do I cut my onion in half??? 😂😂
The popcorn ones seems simple, the layer gets permeated by the water making it less strong so the kernels are more likely to pop.
Not quite. What makes the kernels pop is the water inside turning into steam - the unpopped kernels have gone stale and too dry.
Thanks for another great episode in the series, Barry!
“If we whisper, the internet won’t hear.” 🤣
Frozen peanut butter - smooth and crunchy at the same time!
Have you ever been in a situation where…??? 😂😂😂😂 Just the way Mrs. B says it each time.
Always happy to see a hacks video or any video with Mrs B!
I love it when you two do hacks tougher. It's funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My god the smoke coming off the peeler when Mrs. B whizzes the drill is just wow! And the apple flinging off at the end is just hilarious xD
"You did it, thanks."
I actually DID audibly go "Bayehaheha", and was disappointed you didn't. Hah. XD
I can endorse the clingfilm-phone hack: I work in a warehouse where we deal with some fairly unpleasant dust that plays hell with electronic bits. But a plastic bag (or, preumsably, a bit of clingfilm) takes care of things perfectly.
Hi Barry! Here in Tucumán, Argentina we use a grater with a can like the one you made it to make a traditional food named Humita, you grate fresh yellow corn 🌽 that was previously soaked in water to soften, yo mix that grated corn with pumpkin puree an cook it with sauted green onions and lots of paprika! If you love paprika and corn you'll love it!!
The way the popcorn works is that water is a really good conductor of heat and water soaks into the kernels
I personally find that putting the oil and corn into a cold pan on a cold stove and heating it all up at together gets all the kernels to heaz up more evenly and thus almost all of them pop
"Salt Bea bed". That's funny. The big square white salt blocks would be his pillows as well.
Oh wow! Accidentally got here early.
Thanks for the years of amazing content, Barry.
@12:40 "I really want some cheese that I've managed to forage"
Kids, don't eat cheese that you find in the woods
Pro Tip: Don't try to wash the salt block in the sink. It litterally disolves. Someone did that where I bought one.
This is the first time in 6 or more more momths your video has shown.up in my feed even thogh im sunscribed and have all notifications on.
Thanks for watching, i've no idea why that's happening - getting quite a few messages like that
Check and make sure your notifications are set to all. Same thing was happening to me with a different CZcamsr, I found out somehow my notifications got switched from all to personalized. May not be the solution but worth a check.
I actually love the peeling onion idea for salads & sandwiches. I love onion but I don't particularly like biting into thick pieces & in salads I don't like breaking up the rings. I also have a cucumber & onion salad recipe that would be spectacular with thinly shaved onions.
Looks like you all had fun!
That apple peeling one looked like so much fun 😂
Not going to lie I really like the peanut butter slab. It's also really nice to see Mrs Berry being more comfortable in front of the camera good on you mate!
That peanut butter round on a big brownie and microwave! OOOOooooo
8:31 Yes I did. XD
At this point it is pretty much a Pavlovian response.
I started to notice that when the bread starts ripping apart when you spread peanut butter. it's normally after the bread comes out of the freezer. I think it breaks down the bread and makes it much more weak.
These weren’t Mrs B’s finest hacks but always a good watch 😂👌🏽
I’ve save the plastic straws whenever I got one over last 2 years. So I have plenty to use. My daughter makes fun but she usually get a straw from me
More fun with popcorn...hand some kernels and a skillet to your non-cooking friends and ask them to fry it for you...it's hilarious to see their faces when it goes flying...and it'll give your puppies a tasty treat too.
The frozen peanut butter slice reminds me of the caramel slices for putting over apples.
@13:00 Hilarious ! Also I notice we have to do our own by-ee-yas now.
I flinched when the apple came flying at the camera
Mrs.B With a power drill is the scariest thing I’ve seen this week🤣
What kind of maniac doesn't butter their bread when making a peanut butter sandwich? That's like half the enjoyment right there.
Hi Barry! Love the show ☺️☺️
That first little clip tell so much about how this video is going to go!!! Cheers!! I love it
I like the peanut butter grate it for topping or enjoy a slightly frozen sammich
Wow, the bread for the peanut butter slice looked really good lol
Mrs. B... the channel wouldn't be the same without you. It's the Lewis Family channel!
I can't ever hear the word seal anymore without doing the thing .... thanks Barry lol
I have a Himalayan salt block and I know you can use them on the stove top but I don't, I only use it in the oven, it works great for any oven recipe that doesn't require a deep dish, or if it dose make sure you have a large pan bigger than the salt block it's self and use the pan as a drip tray on the shelf right under the salt block
Mr and Mrs Barry are so cute, giggling together 😂😁
Tried the popcorn hack in the "air popper" doohicky. I lost more popped corn to the floor than unpopped kernels at the bottom of the machine. Will be soaking them from now on.
You guys are great together 👍
Love these videos xx
The peanutbutter hack seems like it's more for someone going to work/school like Mrs. B said. Not to sure about the soggy bread factor as the PB defrosts, but I can see the sandwich being made in the morning for the afternoon.
"Have you ever needed to chop something but don't have a knife? Step 1. Get a knife"
Thank you Mrs B uall are a great couple of folks...
Thanks for enjoying it
Since you have some plastic straws now, have you ever been in a situation where you need to make individual, portable, spice containers? All you need is plastic straws, something to crimp with, and a lighter or other heat source.
Omg! New kitchen that means I have missed out on so many of your vdos. 😍😍😍😍
Yes, that has been a Year lol
@@mrbarrylewis I'll do a marathon of everything I have missed 😁😁😁 yaaaaaa!!!
love the ti can grater if you used a larger nail would it be better for cheese do you think ? loving your videos together Mate
Possibly but you are still gonna get that sort of puncture shape for zesting
The hand made grater is how a lot of people in the Caribbean grate stufff , but we don’t use a can it’s just a sheet of metal
With the grater trick, it would work better if you hammered the nail in from the other direction, ie so the rough edges which collect the shredded whatever are on the inside of the tin, which will then be able to also collect and store whatever the foodstuff is within itself.
I'm dyin, lol. "If we whisper the internet won't hear." X.x
“Have you ever been in the situation where your wife asks you if you have ever been in the situation….”
Who knew apple peeling could be so entertaining and funny
7:19 almost made my have a spit take with my coffee Barry.
How many times did you attach the tin to the chopping block when nailing it?
Mrs. B is too cute 😍. Also u have an onion and a peeler but no knife, makes total sense. Lol. That's funny. Although peeling an onion with a peeler is actually kinda smart 😀
One of the better ones
This was more about the pair of you than the hacks....lovely stuff 😁
Re: The salt block, I’ve seen much smaller ones where you can give everyone their own block and they can cook whatever to their own desired doneness. Good for dinner parties.
That’s usually granite or something similar rather than salt
Wholesome time with Barry and Mrs Moose
I like the onion hack. Note Barry's veggie prep kit used. Yes I have it. Stonking
where would one forage cheese? haha this show is so good
Cooking on a salt block means you don't have to add salt. Like cooking on a cast iron pan adds a bit of iron to the food.
Nice one thanks
Oh, no. Now he actually believes it. Salt your food, please!
the water gets turned into steam and with it on the kernel it pops faster.
"have you ever needed to cut thin slices of onion and you haven't got a knife?" .... Barry : *side glances at Barry lewis veg prep kit*
Yaaay! :) my favorite series is back! :) Good to see you again, Barry! :)
mrs barry is getting a lot more confident in the videos. well done
We've actually used the drill/apple peeler hack at my house. Not exactly as it's shown here, as we have one of those apple/peeler/corer/slicers and not just a vegetable peeler. Take off the handle and attach it to the drill, and you can peel/core/slice an apple in under 10 seconds.
The can grater is how they make graters in Haiti. The first time i saw it i was suprised (i lived there for 4yrs)
Barry and Becky: The apple thing reminds me of my grampa! He was very inventive because my family was quite poor when he was young so he always had to get creative when a solution had to be found. He stuck a toilet brush to a long metal rod and clamped the other end into a large drill, then took a bucket full of potatoes and water, held the drill and attachment in and actually peeled large quantities of potatoes! Wouldn't that be a hack to try out? But not in the kitchen - at least I wouldn't recommend it :D
