It’s refreshing to hear a designer admit to their own designing mistakes. Thank you
Completely agree.
Hes not a designer though lol
Oh my good.....I need the marble table for my funeral 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love that a professional designer can admit to bad design choices. Makes me feel better about my amateur bad choices. ❤
Love you Arvin!
That reminds me of the ORANGE! mini blinds I bought for my large den
I love him for that too.
Learning by doing.
He is not a professional decorator. He has never "decorated" anything except that apartment and he is shamelessly copying Athena Calderone's rooms.
It makes me feel sooo much better knowing you, a designer, can make bad mistakes. The problem is that most of us can't afford to replace those mistakes right away & end up living with them.
He isn’t a designer. You need an actual degree.
@@YolingxP YES! Talent and experience are useful as well. He has never decorated anything except his own apartment and he is doing it in a way he is absolutely bound to make mistakes. Real designers/decorators lay out the room first on trace paper. So the designer knows immediately if the console is too small or too big. Telling you to buy big is terrible advice. How many people have you seen buy sofas that dominate and oppress the room? First draw out your room on trace paper over the floor plan. Highlight the corners of the room in pencil so you can see them and then start filling it with furniture. Then you buy that console at the exact right size, no guess work involved.
@@YolingxP exactly
I agree, for years
About the vase: supporting vintage shops is good but supporting a local potter/ceramist is even better
Pottery is great….
Absolutely. So many ceramists n pottery artists doing an outstanding job, n one that u can proudly display for its originality even. Great idea
I love local potter's. When a friend was having a super busy finals week, getting sick, and period. I found a nice large mug from a local potter, put that in a box with different teas, snacks and a supportive note. It became her favorite go to mug.
@@JKidding989 that's so sweet! You're a great friend 🥰
Nobody asked but discovering your channel is my favorite thing about lockdown. ✨ 💫
Yayyyy!!!!
Me to I'm about change my whole room
I AGREE TOTALLY!!! 🥰🥰🥰
I'm learning soooo much here!!!
🙋🏻♀️ Right he made me laugh literally out loud!!😂🤣 I really enjoy watching his videos!!
My 8 year old from the other room: “Mommy, why are you screaming so much”. 😂😂😂
IM CRYINGGGGG
I laughed out loud at your art deco lamp. I look forward to watching your videos. You make me laugh. If you are ever in Miami, you must let me know and I'll treat you and your partner a coffee.
As an ArtDeco addict, they are just screaming Joan Crawford coming from her bed in fully shiny satin nightgown. So: I get your point why you took them! (you can send them over here to Berlin, 😉) Hugs! ❤️
Hee, hee! My darling Phrynee, Lucy and Leo (cats) levitated with each scream! 🙀
lololo
I think you should, as an exercise, decorate a room with just those 10 items, and let's see it!
Great idea!
🤣That’s such a fun idea.
Haha that would be fun to see.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
That lamp at the end has “Joey and the white dog sculpture” vibe from Friends. 🤣🥰
OMG yes !! 😂
I want that dog though 😂😂😂
“It took like 4 grown men...including me...well, no not me” 🤣🤣🤣
Friendly reminder,
It’s okay to buy cheap things and slowly work your way up and invest in higher quality pieces.
Also,
A clean and peaceful home - never goes out of style...and if you’re worried about anyone coming to your house to judge your decór - don’t invite them over.
Thank you! I just bought a cheaper “printed” rug that wasn’t actually cheap bc I got it so big. I think it looks great but this has me questioning everything. This is my first apartment so I guess I can take it easy on myself
Yes! I used plenty of hand me downs before I invested in good quality pieces I truly loved
@@RG-jf5ep starting out, that's the way most of us all went. Maybe a plus because you get all different styles that can help you pick out what you really like when you can afford to buy new.
I realized that buying cheap things "for now" costs more in the long run. Invest in the bones- solid wood tables vs particle board, but maybe budget shop the decor items that rotate out like pillows and lampshades.
@@temporarilyimmortal795 it can be, sometimes, but I know there are people out here who buy homes because they’re tired of paying for apartments that will never be theirs and after closing plus the costs of closing, etc.. funds and credit both take a pretty big hit so they don’t have the means to buy or finance good quality, and new furniture right off the bat. I meant cheap more so as pre owned or even hand me downs are okay to start with while getting it together.
Then just sell the old stuff and slowly start replacing with the new nice stuff. ♥️
Starting with one room at a time also helps.
Some people truly can’t afford to switch out their furniture with trends so I definitely agree with your statement about good bones. Buying quality items that last. 👍🏼
Hi Arvin, my mother Sue passed away recently. She adored your show and always sent me your videos. Thank you for bring her such joy and style. She loved decorating. (I’m writing using my mother’s account)
I love that you say, "Nobody asked." 😂 It's the opposite of almost every other video intro 🙄. Love the decor inspo and tips as well! Currently binge watching
I totally agree with you z😂
@@shreyaparekh4941 📣🤣🤪🗣 😂😂😂😂 Haha I'm dead look's Nappy📣🤣🤣😂🗣🗣🤦
Not the clock!! My mom hates the clocks! She roasts Joanna Gaines ever every time I watch her show. My mom will be like "oh there's a wall guess Joanna better put a big ass clock there" 🤣
😅😅😅
I thought I was the only one that doesn’t like her style.
@@Lightandlove995 No you are not alone lol I mainly love how she remodels the front of the houses and the landscaping.
🤣🤣🤣
I am cracking up! Lol
The way to avoid mistakes is to buy second hand original items. The fact they are original gives a special aura to them
I knew that when the faux fur pillows went on sale at Pottery Barn, the trend was over. I’ve made many mistakes decorating my home. It’s good to know that professionals do as well.
Yeah it’s kind of reassuring that professional designers also make these mistakes haha. I bought a cheap faux fur rug from tj max 3 years ago….and while it looked good for the first month or so, it really started to look janky as time went on. It’s really hard work to maintain that “new” faux fur look. Would definitely NOT buy again
But the stools I bought are so cute honestly they look cute I think it depends how you deco I put it on my daughters room as under her dressing table hehe 😉
When it comes to art specifically, I think its an area you can and SHOULD pay decent money for. You can support small artists and find a very personal and unique look for your space. I've made amazing gallery walls from even tiny postcard sized prints that get conversations going and add so much depth to my home.
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with any of these items. It seems more like you just bought what was trendy at the time, and now that it's not trendy anymore, you're not into it. The only problem is that you're still buying trendy things, so next year you'll probably cringe at those too, LOL. That's what we do.
I totally agree. I definitely don’t do trends simply because I know it’ll pass. But everyone should do what they love and what feels right for them. Your home is exactly that, YOURS.
Stop with the ridiculous consumerism! Simple.
@@rhondasmith7413 I couldn't agree more! Obviously everyone wants to inhabit a beautiful space, but all this buying stuff and throwing it out is insane. It's better to thrift, get hand me downs or buy classic pieces that will last a lifetime.
So true! And with home stuff like furniture and rugs etc it’s so expensive so we can’t afford to be trendy here!!
And I don't understand how people can love living in this soulless house ! I'm materialistic, but in a different way : I keep all the furnitures who belong to my family, because I have a memory with every object. My home is like my heart aha
The clock is a NO! Clocks make me feel like I need to hurry up to do something 'cause "time is watching" 😩😂
omgggg hahah ive NEVER thought about it that way. that's hilarious
You are hilarious!!! I love watching your vlogs. My #1 decorating advice is don’t buy sofas that will last forever because your husband may never let you get rid of them!
That's true!
I tend to agree with you, but at the sane time I think nowadays there is too much dos and donts. I love those kitsch look from the 90s. Feels homy
I also prefer that look, since it is more important for me to feel cozy and homey than for it to look perfect
The scream after every item is HILARIOUS 😂 . ALSO Supporting local artists is the way to go!
Hahahah I could have screamed myself but I forgot. Next time I’ll do it 😂😂😂😂
That scream is the best!😂😂😂
@@ArvinOlano The retro table lamp reminds me of Joey's dog statue from "Friends"😂😂😂
I was screaming at the same time with fux fur trolls 💀 😂 🤣 😭
Hahaha 😄
I love how you are always so honest and never feel ashamed of admitting that your style has changed. ❤️ I can’t stand popular art pieces and fake plants 😅, but I agree with all that you mentioned.
In yoga we joke and say that namaste means there are “no mistakes”. Namaste- no mistakes. Only lessons…. I love you Arvin!
Your style, your energy, and your everything is so on point! I am so happy when people are living out their passions and dharma. Keep doing you and pray for many blessings to come your way!
Oh! Sweet Arvin, I remember watching the shopping video when you bought those "wing" lamps. I love you so much and thought I must be crazy because Arvin loves them and I think they're bananas! Thanks for sharing this video! It was fun to watch and proves that we are always evolving, day to day, season to season, design to design. Virtual hug!
The screaming in the background is the BEST!! Cracks me up!
Me too I’m dyingggg bahahah
It sounds like someone found a dead body lol!
That scream causes my dog to bark!
So glad I've been going the right direction with decor in the our new home. Living in apartments and obsessing over trendy decor styles has taught me well!
I needed this video! I am STRUGGLING with trying to incorporate my style and my husband's style, while being able to hold up to our four teens who seem to be heavy handed with all things! Intentional spaces are so important.
The design walk of shame. For me, I wish I’d never bought any useless Knick knacks from Home Goods. In a month, they look like junk. Which they are, let’s face it.
I CAN RELATE LOL. Haven't bought much from HG in awhile
Lol...so true.
LOL! 🙋🏻♀️omg this is me!! I’m such a sucker! So much money wasted
You ALWAYS get what you pay for!
So true.
That’s y I can’t make decisions because I’m afraid to make big money mistakes 🤦🏽♀️
Just sell it. One person's mistake is another's treasure. Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace etc. I've even made a profit over stuff I no longer wanted (not always but every now and then).
You are breath of fresh air! I love it that you don't put down any particular style, but instead you suggest ways to make these styles more understated, not over done, classy.. God Bless you Arvin! I'm glad I discovered you!
I love how you preempt every video with “nobody asked” ! 😆 love it ! And You’re so on point with a lot of your advice ! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Me too, I love it when Arvin says, Oh no girl! 😌
Troll Dolls 😂😂😂!! That photo of them on the leather sofa... I'm dead 🤣!
That dining table was just... oh dear. I’m sorry you had to go through that :)
I couldn’t have said it better myself.
The table was just his Shea McGee phase, not his "in a hurry, it was Thanksgiving, what was I thinking?" piece like he is trying to sell you. If he was stilling doing McGee it would be fine. I wouldn't buy it but I don't copy Shea McGee. Plus I like well made pieces so I wouldn't buy whatever knockoff he will get next either. Now he is into Athena Calderone. When he starts copying someone else, the new black table will look like a horrid mistake as well.
New subscriber, and I LOVE your tips. It’s very refreshing to hear that professionals fall for the hype sometimes. Not only do you admit your “mistakes,” but you can laugh at yourself.
You are such a blessing. You are saving me a freakish amount of time and money, and I will end up with the home I've always wanted. Thank you!!
Oh honey, you were having a moment with that lamp. I am literally crying over the fact you got a pair.
bahahaha i really was. wasn 't I?
Wait I LOVE THOSE!!
😂😂😂
What I learned is Don’t be influenced by influencers. I’m sure ppl bought what you showed them, and they are now feeling badly about spending their money on the stuff that made your regret list.
I'm never influenced by influencers, thank you God. I buy what I love. I shop my own home first before buying anything 😜 But I love watching the videos😍
So true. I remember how he raved about that sofa until he was gifted the new one, now all of a sudden, "leather's too heavy on the eyes".
Influences are the bane of our existence. Follow them and burn. Live free, people.
Yeah, buy all this stuff that I have, and then I'll tell you a year later how it's a pile of junk and you should be ashamed of yourself. Lol.
this... they only make it seem like its the coolest thing to buy when they have it but we have to remember they purchase stuff for content that makes them money
Really, ladies? How about just enjoy the laughs? Lol, come on.
Thank you ,Arvin , for being willing to admit buying some mistakes for your home--you really have humility to do that as a professional designer!! (I think #10 should be placed underwater in a pool, in a garden, with lots of greenery around it!)
Love your laugh!
I’m dying...the laugh, especially about the troll doll pillows.
no trolls heree!!!! loolllll
Happy jumpin and dancin I didn't buy any of the things you bought!...
Why do I keep thinking about their weird waxy butts on the dolls?!? lmao
When I was a teenager, they were so popular. We called them dammit dolls. Created by someone who's last name was Dam.
The jacket you're wearing is gorgeous and suits you so well, super stylish and inspirational..i am loving your vids for us.. X
God I LOVE when you say “nobody asked”😆👏
Hahah thank u !!!!
I love how you said that making a home is a process and to enjoy it 💖
You're smart, well spoken and you make me laugh with your refreshing humor! Love your content! 👍
Trends can be hard to resist. But it must be done. Stick to YOUR style. Buy what you love. 💜
If you’re a trendy decor shopper, just say that 😂
This video makes me not feel so bad about all of the things I should not have bought or that don't match. Thank you for sharing!
I agree that furnishing/designing a home takes time. I’m always in a rush, just want it done, but it should be a fun process. Thank you for your tips!
Anyone else dying over the clothes, the jewelry and accessories he's wearing? I want to see the shoes 😭
I usually wear slippers when filming ahahahaha 😂💕
@@ArvinOlano hahahahha you're so cute
I LOVE them
I loved the outfits and lipstick. He’s such a beautiful person. I just started watching and I’m hooked.
And such a beautiful face. I’m transfixed, my eyes are dancing with happiness.
I’m crying at the final piece. AND you got a pair 😭😂
We all have made these mistakes, what you shared with us is good advice putting your home design together takes time. I’m a firm believer quality furnishing and accessories do not have to cost you an arm and a leg, there are so many vendors these days where you can find originals and authentic pieces of art, furnishing, and accessories. Keep your eyes open and take your time. Thank you for sharing Arvin...👍🏼😉
I love the fact that you're honest about bad purchases. Actually I like the marble dining table.
Oh, honey, we've ALL done it. I'm still living with some "shabby chic" items from back in the day. There. I said it.
SO GLAD you're promoting real art! It's just the best. Ebay is also a great place to find affordable original art.
OMG Arvin, you are such a hoot! I was thoroughly entertained and screamed right along with you! lol The very best piece of advise I freely dispense, asked or or not, is to ONLY purchase what you absolutely positively LOVE! Why is simple,, because you can LIVE with what you love! If you settle on a purchase, or have to have it because its the latest trend, it will wind up in the donation pile is less than 6 months! I love a classically transitional styled home. My furniture pieces are all solid wood and upholstered goods are all natural fabrics in light colors. I love color too, so I always look to the "easily disposable" goods like pillow covers, throws, vases and small decor pieces to bring in a fresh feeling pop of color. No one wants to live with color choices forever, so why not give yourself permission to purge yesterdays colors trends from your home and bring in something lively and new. Your home always feels fresh. To be honest, I've made many design choice mistakes, but its a great way to learn what NOT to do! I love your design advice too! I watched several of your video's last night and wow, I need to do a few more things around here! Who know??? Love your channel and I really love that you dispense advise about unusual things, not just about rugs that are too small for your space. Looking forward to watching your whole series and more! Biggest new fan, Dawna
If I’m having a bad day I love watching your videos even more! Always entertainingly educational and your laugh just never fails to make me smile!
That laugh is so infectious! It is what we need right now! Thank you Arvin!
Hubby and I used to bet each other as to when the giant clock would appear in every single episode of Fixer Upper.
So true!!!
That sounds like it would make a fun drinking game lol
I LOVE these videos... I'm 17 years old and obsessed with interior design and decoration AND I'm happy that I already passed some of the "phases" like the one with the pillows and stuff before actually decorating a whole house or sth (still live with my parents obviously). I remember a couple of years ago that I reaaally really wanted to buy a bunch of pillows to put on my bed but now I'm happy I didn't 😂
This could be your career then…if you choose it to be! How great you found your passion.
So glad I saw this video. You reminded me to brush my faux fur pillow! (cackle) But I bought it for the color...ombre from white to dark turquoise. I love it and always will. Don't worry. If you ever visit, I'll hide it. So glad I found you. You're definitely a bright spot in my day.
As an artist, thank you for the comment about mass-produced art. I cringe a lot in our local decor shops like Mr Price Home, @Home etc. Many times it just screams cheap ass :-)
I had a similar clock🤣🤣 totally gave it to goodwill
Same girl, same. Those were the days hahahahahaha
@Dingle Berry if it brings happiness to you, that’s great!! I don’t have a say in how your place looks, as long as it pleases you; that’s all that counts! No matter our opinions
I think we all have at some point in our home journey.
@@wasabee8228 i completely agree!
My boyfriend has one and he refused to throw it out. I hid it in the corner hoping he would forget about it in time and then slowly get it closer to the garbage
I totally relate about the cheap rug! A blogger once posted a super affordable rug from Walmart and I bought it... Came in and it was HORRIBLE. immediately returned!
Omg Arvin I could just sit and watch your videos all day! You're my favourite kind of person. Sassy, funny and informative! Love from Australia x
Oooo...that blazer is SHARP. Rose is definitely your color, Arvin🌹💋
Guilty on the fur. My regret hit me when my sweet lil doggo made it his girlfriend. That was the end of any type of fur accessories. 😳
😆 🐕 💗 I’m so sorry, but I also have to laugh! My mother’s male Maltese did that with a stuffed toy... 🤦♀️
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have a faux fur throw from Restoration Hardware. It wasn't cheap and I like it in Winter!
@@connieshoemaker6862 If my doggo hadn't fallen in love with that furry pillow it would still be on my couch. 🤣 Funny thing is I kept blaming my kids for it being on the floor, until I caught him in action. 😳 He had no shame. I still shudder to think about how many times I picked it up. 😖
@@brooding_mama blaaagh!!! I’m sure your dog had no problem with you picking up his “girlfriend” and using it! Did he look for the pillow after you got rid of it?
I adore you! Your ideas are fresh, you are honest and your energy is just incredible!
It's such a joy to watch your videos. DIscovering your channel brightened up my night! Love your style and look forward to seeing more of your suggestions and design stories :)
I was clapping on a standing ovation over your words in the last seconds of the video. That's so true guys, decor doesn't have to happen overnight: enjoy the process, enjoy the hunt.
We finished decorating our house 2 years after we moved in and I guarantee it turned out so well.
I’ve been thinking all of this the whole time! I just didn’t want to sound like a hater and get blocked😭😂
Same!!
I’m doing that now with the lamp and table behind him. I’ve seen that lamp recently and was shocked at the expense. It looks like a couple of clay plant pots painted white and glued together. 😂😂
I’ve enjoyed this channel a lot.
OMGOODNESS, so glad I found your channel, you are so cute in admitting your mistakes.
I just love you. I just started watching your videos, and I feel like i am not that bad in select and decor my house.
Can we just appreciate how dam gorgeous your jacket is and how well it compliments your skin tone 😍 ❤
So Gorgeous
Dying laughing every time the “regret scream” came on🤣 ...we all have so many design choice regrets😩 thanks for this fun video👍
Love the screams!!!!!!
This video had me on THE FLOOR!! 🤣🤣 Whew, tickled!!! Love your transparency!!😘😘😘
I feel better seeing some of the mistakes you've made! Just discovered your channel and already getting lots of good inspo. THanks!
I was not ready for the lamp, I was drinking tea and went in my nose!
Best design advice ever: “You don’t want accessories that look like troll dolls”
I’m dying laughing.
Especially when he photoshopped them on the couch. 😂
😂
Worse design advice ever: "Buy as big as possible." Please people no. Don't do that.
I like how you get straight into the videos. 👏🏾I love watching you, so informative and funny as hell. 😂
Omg You made my day watching this video. I was laughing out loud with you and your comments and facial expressions. Especially with the 2 art deco winged lamps. Thanks for making me smile. you're the best.
I'm so glad!
I'm so shocked you even tried farmhouse style! You might as well picked up a few Rae Dunn pieces with that clock 🤣
Lol I was shocked too! Rae dunn drives me nuts....like okay I know that's a cup it doesn't need to introduce itself to me 🤣 great for kids though it's like flash cards.
That was his Shea McGee phase. Look her up and you will get it. She is a bit industrial farmhouse, a big mid-century and a bit minimalist. She wouldn't be caught dead with a piece of Rae Dunn either. You need the right architecture to carry off her look but you need it for Athena Calderone too for that matter. He will figure that out soon and change designers again.
You kill me. You have such a wonderful sense of humor and I actually laugh out loud. You rock.
Thank you for doing this video. Not only was it informative, as you explained really well why these items were mistakes, you also did it with a fun humor that made this entertaining to watch as well. New subscriber!
1) You don’t strike me as a farmhouse guy!
2) I can’t believe you bought that pot
3) I LOVE the marble table and I’m convinced if styled right, can work as a more current look.
the scream sound effect had me rolllingggg omg 😭
Same lol
The scream 😱 is soooo funny 😂
Love the sofa, can’t agree with this one.
Okay but why did I start decorating my room and now CZcams is recommending me your channel. I love it !!
Did you use Google for decorating ideas?
Thanks for putting yourself out there!
Oh. Well...let’s just say that our style choices change over time. And can people please stop chopping the pillows? Why.
OMG PLEASE!
Haha
Yeah, what's up with chopping the pillows😂
I have listened to other designers i guess it's FASHion lol 😆
It's just so Granny foo-foo borderline OCD to chop all your pillows in a certain way. It's that AR vibe like people that HAVE to have their carpet in perfectly vacuumed streaks.Blagh.
reuse that amazing frame from target, and get a piece from an artist locally
growing up our coffee table was thick grey rock slab, bumpy not smooth, on two cut tree trunks for legs,
so cool!
Yes, you are so right. We got our home almost 4 years ago and I still haven’t found furniture that I like.
I’m still looking 😔
"It looks like a troll doll's head!!!" I died!! 😂😂😂. Love your videos!!! 💕
I'm VERY new to interior design (buying my first flat this year), new subscriber etc, learning the very very basics...but that farmhouse clock will haunt my nightmares 😂😂
Welcome aboard! and nooooo lol not today put that dream catcher up...wait no that's a mistake too ahhhhh
Oh take it slow, haunt your local thrifts like for hospice support, YES find covers for pillows and comforters that are so easy to switch out, inserts from local fabric store, and surprisingly Goodwill to snag great FRAMES for cheap then completely different unique art or even mirror glass put inside as replacement- these can be spotted almost anywhere and craft or art stores can do the mirror or glass fairly inexpensively.
You used a Brazilian meme, "Nazaré" 😂 loved it. The table is the worst, in my opinion😓
GRAAAANDE Nazaré Tedesco, tá em todas! 😁
Yes your right I have been decorating my living room and kitchen that’s runs together and it’s been a year now because I don’t want to buy just anything thanks for giving me the heads up on things I shouldn’t buy 🌹🙏🏽🙌🏾💪🏾❤️🥰

Let's revisit this in a year when he says, he regrets buying everything he bought now....aka pampas grass.😣😲 AAaaaaagģhhhh.....!!

Omg the pampas grass😱 It reminds me of my mother in laws house-era 1976-with 30 years of dust stuck to it😖
Everytime he screams my dog is disturbed.
Ur so fun to watch!!! Keep it up! Ur laugh drew me in lol
I like that you say take your time. Enjoy the process. Enjoy the hunt. Really enjoy your videos
