Hank Hanegraaff, the host of the 𝘉𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘢𝘯 broadcast and the 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘜𝘯𝘱𝘭𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘥 podcast, explains that before he answers the question, he has a confession to make. For most of his public ministry, he wrongly communicated that the clause, "he descended into hell" which was a misinterpretation of 1 Peter 3: 19-20. Hank contended that just as the Spirit of Jesus preached through Noah to the people of his day-who were then in the flesh, but at the writing of Peter’s epistles were disembodied spirits incarcerated in the prison house of hades-so, too, in the days preceding the fall of Jerusalem, the Spirit of Jesus preached through Peter to pagans drowning in dissipation. Moreover, Hank asserted that because this phrase did not surface until the fourth century, it could not be credibly argued that it was the profession of the early church fathers, much less the apostles. Regrettably, he was wrong!
Furthermore, Hank now acknowledges that Christ’s descent into hell was clearly the consensus patrum (consensus of the Fathers). Fathers who faithfully transmitted the teachings of the apostles. Fathers without whom we would not so much as have our treasured Bibles. Fathers like Irenaeus who in his youth listened to and learned from the teachings of Polycarp. Polycarp who in turn sat at the feet of the beloved apostle John. Ignatius, friend of Polycarp and a disciple of Peter and John who upon approaching his own martyrdom surrendered his body as “the wheat of Christ, ground by the teeth of beasts to become pure bread.” And this but scratches the surface. To this list could be added Justin Martyr, Cyril of Jerusalem, Gregory Nazianzus, and a host of others. In the words of the polymath John Damascene, “Through his descent into hell, Christ opened the way of paradise for all and calls all to salvation. For some Christ’s preaching led to salvation while for others it only exposed their unbelief.” And said the venerable John Chrysostom, “this call is not coercive or forcible. Everyone is called, but not all follow the call.” For in the mercy of God there are no obstacles other than free will.
Finally, the “harrowing of hell” has been historically authenticated through the liturgies, hymnography, and iconography of the church. The Vesperal Liturgy of Holy Saturday says in part, “Today Hades cries out groaning: I should not have accepted the Man born of Mary. He came and destroyed my power. He shattered the gates of brass.” Likewise, the church proclaimed Christ’s victory over hades in robust song. “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!” And the traditional icon of Holy Saturday portrays Christ, radiant in hues of blue and white, standing on the devastated gates of Hades. With one arm he unfetters Adam; with the other He liberates the Old Testament righteous. Not until the sixteenth century did innovative interpretations of the harrowing of hell begin spreading through the church...

"Father" is a term for those who teach the biblical teachings, handed down in Apostolic succession. Led by the Holy Spirit with humility.
In the first Orthodox Christian Church Divine Liturgy I attended the Church Father said "I'm just a man, don't believe in me, but believe in Jesus Christ Son of God.".

Christ had to descend into hell so that God could legally raise Him from the dead. It is how he, and we conquer death.
Christ was a perfect soul, he had no sin. So when God the Father looked down and saw Jesus in hell, he legally raised the perfect soul from the dead. Now, all of us who put our trust and faith in Christ, are covered by his blood. We have a "perfect soul" through propitiation. That is how we defeat death.

Hank, you have abandoned Scripture for tradition. You no longer deserve to wear the title of "The Bible Answer Man". I loved your prior ministry, and even enjoyed the picture that I have of me sitting at your desk at the old studio. That picture no longer brings a smile to my face, but sadness at a defender of the Faith, who has left it to promote incense, robes, and icons. You have reminded me to never place your faith in men, but in God and the Bible alone. A reminder that you would be well to also remember.

    • @BibleAnswerMan

But dear friend the perspectives on Jesus’ descent into Hades are developed from various Christian traditions drawn from the biblical text. You have the Reformed, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox understandings of Jesus’ descent.
Many evangelicals buy into a novel though heretical tradition that Jesus had to suffer in hell to complete the atonement, become “born again” and then battled Satan in the underworld, which gain popularity through Word of Faith teachers like Kenneth Copeland, Joel Olsteen, and Joyce Meyer. See www.equip.org/articles/the-atonement-of-christ-and-the-faith-message/ www.equip.org/articles/whats-wrong-with-the-word-faith-movement-part-two-/ www.equip.org/articles/christianity-still-in-crisis-/ and www.equip.org/articles/joyce-meyer-in-the-twenty-first-century/
Yes, narratives about Jesus descent into Hades draw upon various traditions, but the question is which upholds what is being communicated by God through the Scriptures. Obviously, the Copeland view is ridiculously wrong. Yet the main point is to rejoice of Christ victory over death. Pease see “He Descended to Hell” by Melanie Nassif: An Investigation of the Harrowing of Hell in the Apostles’ Creed,” from v. 44 n. 4 of the Christian Research Journal. Jesus descended to Hades, & Paradise (Abraham's bosom) is a region of Hades. A place of torment or Tartarus is another. There, He preached His triumph to the angels that sinned in Noe's time when the sons of God took wives from the daughters of mankind. It was a victory sermon with His foot on the necks of those angels, not a repentance message. That people in Paradise can speak with people in Tartarus is proven by His account of the leper Lazarus and the rich man.

It is not the apostle creed that said this but scriptures themselves, most people do not know what happened at Jesus death an just before Jesus death. Here is what happened, Jesus had to hang on the cross until all sins or the world were pour into it, the hrs of darkness, once that was done and before His body died Jesus by His will and power separated His Spirit from His body and rose up above His body. When His body died it put to death the entire sin of the world. When Jesus body was taken down and washed and placed in the tomb and the tomb was sealed He immediately went into the tomb and re-entered His body by His Spirit and by his Spirit He made His body alive again, being flesh and bone but not kept alive the heart pumping blood because we know that the Spirit give life and the flesh profits nothing. Then after He entered His body He descended into hell, the bowels of the earth where He spoke to the old testament saints who were being held in captivity, but in a different place than the place of torment. Because when He rose from the dead, He led captivity captive, meaning these saints rose up to heaven with Him when He arose to the Father. So Jesus never spent 3 days in a tomb, He spent very little time in that tomb. And this very same Spirit of Christ that gave His body eternal life is the same Spirit that will give our bodies eternal life when we receive Christ today and die we rise up to be with Him in Spirit, but our bodies will be reunited with our Spirit and will live eternally by this Spirit of Jesus and we shall be as He is. This is why eternal life is in Jesus alone, even if the Father want someone saved He sends them to His Son for that salvation otherwise He would be making the cross void. And if we could enter into heaven by another way then Jesus , then Jesus would no longer be, "the way, the truth, and the life, no one come to the Father but by Me" Jesus paid our dept and the price for our souls and is the reason eternal life is in Him alone. God Bless !!!

My church is a good church and not Calvinists but I don't understand why Christians that aren't Calvinist say that they are still in the pale of Orthodoxy since they make God the Author of evil and they are the only chosen few. I know that they interpret the Bible differently but so do the Jehovah's witnesses and the Mormans. And to tell you the truth even though I know they are way off, i can't see much difference except Calvinist uphold the Trinity, and other basic truths but the other things they do are just as problematic ti me as the cults. It has devistated me to know that what they have made my loving God into. I know God is the judge and not the big Santa in the sky but He definitely isn't what Calvinist have made him. So Jesus lied to the thief on the cross when he told him he would be with him in paradise?
    Luke 23:43-44
43 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Further, David was not dead when he said the following. Compare to 1 Peter 3:19.
    Psalm 142:7
➡️Bring my soul out of prison⬅️, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.
The beloved "church fathers" certainly meant to convey the message that Jesus went to hell. They were liars. This is symbolic language, not literal!

    • @MissMaskless
      @MissMaskless Před 8 měsíci

@ericlammerman2777 You think that Jesus "literally" went to hell, or to "Hades"🤓, when there is zero scriptural evidence to support such. Just assertations and impositions. Yet, you have the nerve to tell me not to take the word "today" literally??? I guess he should have told the thief, "welllll, today doesn't actually mean today, lol." I smell a Calvinist🤣
Jesus was full of the Holy Ghost (Luke 4:1), to assert that anyone with the Holy Spirit can go to hell is utterly blasphemous and demonic.
The scriptures are clear that the redemptive work of Christ was finished from the foundation of the world regardless of the point in time that he was manifested. This why the gospel was preached unto Abraham
      Hebrews 4:3
For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: ➡️although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.⬅️
      1 Peter 1:20
Who verily was ➡️foreordained before the foundation of the world,⬅️ but was manifest in these last times for you,
      Galatians 3:8
And the scripture, ➡️ foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham,⬅️ saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

@ericlammerman2777 The word Hades does not appear in the King James Bible. It DOES appear in the NIV. Example:
      Luke 16:30
➡️In Hades, where he was in torment⬅️, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.
The above verse states that Hades is a place of torment.
In your reply, you stated that paradise is not heaven, but part of Sheol (the realm of death, Hades or Hell.) You honestly think that PARADISE is a place of torment? Sickening!

You called the Church fathers, people who knew Christ and/or His disciples, people who died for the faith, liars. And then you add that their teaching is blasphemous. And you say that I have nerve.
