On "My Car Story" we're in Saratoga Springs NY on 4-27-23.
We're looking at a 1967 Pontiac Firebird Convertible in Red Paint. The car is equipped with a 326 CI HO “High Output” V8 engine, with a 4 Speed transmission.
The car's Owner is Dave DePaulo. Dave’s had this car since 2022. Dave shares his 1st car was a Pontiac Firebird that looked similar to this one, so when he saw this one, he wanted this one in his collection.

For a survivor, that Firebird is in excellent condition! That is indeed a rare bird! Especially equipped with a 326 HO engine with manual 4-speed behind it! Like it's cousin the Camaro, the Firebird made it's debut in 1967. It was the lightest year both cars were made. The engine sounded healthy, and with it being a convertible makes this car even more special! I can't get over it not having any battle scars on the paint job, being a survivor. A real gem Lou!

Always loved these. Old GF's parents had one, a gold colored hardtop with the floor-shifted two speed automatic, but it was beat by the time I saw it. I didn't even know that 326s came in Firebirds till I saw that car.

Great Firebird ! I had a 1969 with a 400 and a 4 speed. This is the same H.O. 326 that was in my 1966 Le Mans Coupe. Great Bird ! Peppy little 326 it was ! Thanks for posting Lou !

The 1967 Firebird marked the beginning of an era for Pontiac, featuring a distinctive Coke bottle styling that set it apart from its competitors. It was offered in five different models: the base Firebird, Firebird Sprint, Firebird 326, Firebird H.O. (High Output), and the Firebird 400.

That’s a beautiful 1st Gen Firebird!!! I love it 🙂 My uncle bought one new in 1967 at Delta Pontiac in Stockton, CA. He still has it today.

After following the channel for many years finally you feature a car I had. Of course, mine was a coupe with the powerglide, but it had the 326 HO. My daily driver for years. And yes, it could do 60 in 1st gear.

I restored a 67 back in the 80s.
It was a 2+2 hard top 4 speed in trophy blue.
Unfortunately the girl I was seeing at the time crashed it .
All because of a grasshopper ! Long story short I ditched the girl and parted out the car . I had only finished the car 6 weeks before the crash. Real bummer !

Yup pretty much. We were on a back road heading to her father's farm. The hopper landed on her chest, her foot went to the floor.
We hit the T intersection at about 100 mph and landed in her dad's field. Her father was almost as angry as I was !
Bent the car right at the fire wall .
Lucky we didn't roll. Came down on the nose and that was all she wrote ! A real bummer 😕 . Her dad picked it up with a big tractor 🚜 and brought it back to his shop. Then I helped him drop a motor into his 64 Riviera that we had just finished restoration on.
Now I know why NOBODY (but him) drove or even touched my older brother's classic cars over the years!

I had a 326 67 Firebird with a 4 speed. I didn't have a console. I bought it from a friend of my sisters. I don't think it had an HO motor though. I had glass pak mufflers with the dual exhaust. I t was a hardtop in blue. Air shocks in the back with American Racing mags. Exhaust went up over the rear end and dumped behind the rear end. It very nice and fun. Sold it top go to college out of state (I'm from SoCal). That was big mistake. Sounded nice and drove well.

These things were “throw away” back when I was in high school. It was the early 70’s and these were the type of vehicles that appealed to my generation who beat the heck out of them when they were already rusting out and becoming just worn out old vehicles on their own. What a shame.

PS Had a High School friend with a 67 convertible Fire Bird.
His had a 230 OHC Sprint six.
He still has it, but now with 455.
The 326 was a good engine! Too bad Pontiac didn't go as far with it as Chevy did with their 327 - that would've been a cool 'horsepower race.'
@@DanEBoyd If I remember right, the 326 had the same cylinder bore as the 283 Chevy...3.875 and a stroke around 3.45.
The 327 had 4.0 bore and 3.25 stroke.
So it would be an interesting comparison between the two for performance.

I had a 1970 Lemans convertible. By the time I got it, it had a Chevrolet truck 350 small block V8 in it, but it started out with the Sprint 6. I didn't realize it at the time, but the Sprint 6 was unique for an American straight 6 cylinder at the time, in that it had an overhead cam & a timing belt instead of a chain. It was a John Delorean idea to be kinda European & maybe have more favorable weight distribution for handling or something like that? I wonder, if they had any trouble with the timing belts, not being familiar with them back then, so they broke, giving whomever had the car an excuse to put in a V8? I read, where the last Sprint 6's were put in 1969 Pontiacs, but my 1970 Pontiac Lemans Sport convertible seemingly had stickers all over the engine compartment referring to the Sprint 6.
@@sparky6086 Delorean's PMD developed the world's first rubber timing belt....they were a good belt, but like it's modern offspring, they need periodic replacement.
My buddies 230 OHC six really impressed me back in 1975....
It was very strong for a six banger and the car was very nimble without the heavy V-8.
My engine builder had a rebuilt Pontiac six at his shop that the customer never came back to pick up.
Sat there for years , and when he went out of business, he gave it to me for some wrench turning I did for him.
It's sitting on a stand in my garage.
Thinking it would make a good old school hotrod engine.

I didn't know that either Brian. My first car was a '65 Pontiac Lemans with the 326. However it was equipped with the Rochester two-barrel and two speed slip n slide transmission. Wonder if the Lemans' were available in this HO 326 ?

1967 Pontiac Firebird Convertible 326 HO. The Pontiac Firebird was the Camaro's brother, being introduced 5 months later on February 23, 1967 (The Camaro was introduced September 22, 1966) with Pontiac's unique engines and styling exterior wise (Getting a facelift in 1968 and then 1969. The 1968 model featured wrap around turn signals as an example, the 1969 model would include a completely new front end, featuring quad headlights and a uniquely distinctive grille) and interior wise. The most powerful engines in the car were the Pontiac 350 and the Pontiac 400 (5.7 Litre V8 and 6.6 Litre V8 respectively). These engines made around either 265 HP (325 HP for the Higher Output Version) or 265 HP up to 330 HP, which was as powerful as the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Stock and it's RS/SS 396 variant.
For 1969, Pontiac would introduce their "Trans Am" and "The Judge" package, which were inspired by other trim packages in the 1960s, such as Chevrolet's "Super Sport", Oldsmobile's "W30", "W31", and more, Buick's "Gran Sport" and "Gran Sport Xtreme", Ford's "GT" and "CJ/SCJ", Mercury's "XR7" and "Eliminator", and more. For the Trans Am, it included upgraded suspension, upgraded brakes, new wheels, new paint job, dual body stripes, new hood intakes, new interior, a new spoiler, and were produced in low amounts (689 Trans Ams were produced for 1969, only EIGHT [Yes, EIGHT!] Trans Am Convertibles were produced, costing around $1.1 Million each). This package would continue on until 2002 as the 2002 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6. Another variant which would be introduced besides the Trans Am is the "Formula" package, which had the 400 Ram Air III and scoops on the hood. The Trans Am made around 370 HP for the time but had a 0-60 of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of approximately 250 km/h (~155 mp/h), making it feel like it has over 500 HP.
For "The Judge", it was a option for the Pontiac GTO back in 1969 to 1970, adding "The Judge" badges, black swirly stripes, a spoiler that was colored the same way as the primary color (body), a new interior, and the most powerful engine available (400 cubic inch [7.5 Litre] V8). The car also made 370 HP, had a 0-60 of 6.9 seconds, and a top speed of 124 mp/h (200 km/h).

In 1974 a local used car dealer had a hardtop Firebird 400 hundred for sale. It was the same red exterior and interior as this one and had the tachometer on the hood. I was 16 and had $900 saved for a car. The dealer was asking $750 for it. My mother would not let me buy it until she saw it. It had the three speed manual so I told my mom it would be good on gas. The salesman told her I would kill myself in such a car. He had the perfect car for a high school boy. It was a 1969 VW "Glitterbug". I was so angry with that salesman. It gave me a couple of years of reliable service and at 65 years of age now I believe he did save my young life. But I still want one.

Lee, yer story reminds me of working as a car jockey at a Ford dealership in 1971at 18 yrs old. I got to drive all the 1970, and 1971 new 429s, and they were 'dangerous' most likely, for me to own bc they were so powerful!

Without mentioning an old friends name my buddy Dan gave his wife a original ohc 6 4 barrel 67 convertible bird and she's a beauty.
It's been in the Pontiac collection of theirs for over 30+ years.
On a sidenote getting out of my friends 67 bird (convertible) at lunch in Lane Techs parking lot I ripped my slacks on a rouge door pillar on picture day.
Man those were some nice cars and a just as nice pair of slacks.

Pontiac had their own eng, Chevy had theirs. 326 vs 327. Chevy and pontiac were given the criterior to work with and they both came out with their own created versions of the platform given to work with. Both great cars to pick from.
@@matrox Yup, these Gen 1 Camaros and 'Birds look great, I love them! Chrysler later tried to copy design elements from these two, and made the OG Challenger and Gen 3 Barracuda, and those didn't sell well. I like the Gen 3 Barracuda but not the OG Challenger.
@@mottom2657 The 70 Challenger and Barracuda were also given a parameter to work within but with a little more lattitude. Both cars bigger than the Camara, Firebird and Mustang. The Challenger is bigger than the Barracuda and even has a longer wheelbase, but the Barracuda and Challenger shared the same exact drive train.
These came with a optional hood mounted tach.

Question what distinguishes a high output 326? Was the car purchased from an individual, auction, or classic car dealership?
I think it's a cam added, however maybe a Viewer with knowledge can share. Not sure where he purchased the car from.
