  • First of four parts showing the route from Chicago to Seattle on the 1960's streamlined Northern Pacific Railway's North Coast Limited. A blend of old photos and more recent video of the route, showing a number of BNSF trains working the former NP mainline. See Episode 1 for background information on the Northern Pacific and the mission of this channel.

You are doing a great thing for remembering the NP. Thanks!

Thanks for the great videos. Looking forward to video 3. I live close to the trestle you showed in Valley City, ND and am researching the NP for a song I am writing set in the 1880's. "Daddy's gandy dancin' on that Northern Pacific line."

Thanks, John! In about five minutes I'm out the door to go shoot footage regarding the 1860's construction of the Central Pacific Railroad across the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. I'll do an episode on that one of these days even though it isn't NP. That was the most fascinating story of the first transcontinental.

Thanks, Duncan! Nobody has ever compared me to Sinatra before! I will memorialize your comment for future use.

@@danoc51 I am building an N scale model of a joint NP/MILW line over Snoqualmie Pass WA circa 1955. My fiction is that an earthquake collapsed the Stampede tunnel in 1933, compelling the NP to team up with MILW to cross the Cascades. That gives me an excuse to run two world-class passenger trains on the same line.

Enjoy these videos greatly. Wondering if any of the 1950’s TV commercials still exist. The jingle still sticks in my mind 60 years later.

I don't remember any of the 1950's TV commercials but I don't think we got TV in the Montana boonies until the 1960's. I love to see one.

Look for "Pacific Northwest Holiday". It is a MILW advertisement film about the Olympian Hiawatha. From 1952.

Hope you don't mind a correction. Fargo, not Bismarck, was and is the largest city in North Dakota. Too bad you went through during the night. There is some beautiful scenery in North Dakota. The Badlands are quite unique. I grew up in Mandan.

Difficult to subscribe to your channel ,most videos have a subscribe symbol on the video, had to click on your channel to subscribe...great grandfather worked for NP for over 50 yrs out of the Staples Mn depo

Thanks for your persistence, John. I am not a techie...just happy to have some videos up here. Your grandfather's career of 50 years is startling. These days, not many people work 50 years, much less for a single company. I bet he was out there on some very, very cold days and nights.
