      I know what you are doing. Well, what Trump is doing. He is gathering people and giving them high salary and benefits, if they are loyal to him. And apparently if you make sure you have more than 50% of the power in a democracy, you auto-win.       This debacle is not the fault of congress. This travesty to your democracy lies squarely on the shoulders of every Republican Senator who supported Trump through the entire shit show that is the Trump Presidency including this mistrial. Trump hasn't learned any lesson other than that he can steamroll over every check and balance and I fear that the world hasn't seen the worst that Trump and your republicans can do. Other democratic leaders of the world will not look at the trial as an acquittal. They will see Trump as a dictator who cannot be trusted. Other than in Russia, your republican senators will not be shown the respect they formerly enjoyed whenever they travelled abroad.

    Sadly, I think this a person who is going to be disappointed because I don't honestly believe that Trump's die-hard supporters are really that decent, and I think that's the main reason why they like Trump; he reminds them of how they wish they could behave and what they wish they could get away with themselves.     First, yes, we have a _relatively_ good economy, but this is due to policies that _Obama_ put in place. _Obama_ put them in place. Can we _please_ stop ignoring this inconvenient fact? Obama inherited an economy in recession and got it _growing_ again! It has been growing ever _since._ Does it still have room for reform? Of _course_ it does! This does _not_ mean that Trump gets to inherit this economy and keep taking _credit_ for it.
    Second, lower taxes for _whom?_ For the very _wealthy_ of course. One cannot hope to continue gaining brownie points for granting tax cuts to a demographic into which such a small proportion of this country's population actually falls.
    Third, _conservative judges?!_ Seriously, _conservative judges?!_ What's the value of _that?_ This is not a rhetorical question. He presents this proposition as if its value is self-evident but it's not.
    And this is what he presents as a defense of a decision not to remove Trump from office.

      By the numbers, compared to Obamas economy at this time in his presidency the economy today under Trump is actually slowing down. Still growing, but the momentum is in decline. This is one way Fox News "lies by omission", they say the economy is growing under Trump but don't say it's actually slowing down compared to Obama. Half of the way conservative pundits lie to their audience isn't in the falsehoods they present, but in the truths they knowingly fail to share.

      To play devil's advocate here (because I think the EC should go too), when it was established we were a confederation of semi-independent sovereigns - much like the EU today. In their Presidential elections each NATION gets one vote - not a huge deal, because their President does not hold the sort of power that ours does - but neither did ours back then. And there is no way there would have been an EU if their President had serious power, and the largest nations generally had the votes to pick that person. Smaller nations would have refused to join - just as small states in the US would not have ratified the Constitution without the EC. So they were given representation larger than their population demanded, and the same number of Senators.
      As with so many other things in politics, it was a compromise. But now we have TONS of little states (in terms of population) and they hold power beyond what they should.

If the Senate held a real trial, the House managers could call subpoena witnesses and documents and Trump would have the opportunity to call pertinent witnesses and produce documents to counter the prosecution. Where does an accused get to put on his case at an indictment hearing?

If you brought brought a case before the court with no criminal accusation and the basis for the case is something that is legal and has been done previously extensively what would happen. Furthermore, the senators are not only the jury but also the defense and prosecution in a way. I don't think there would have been any criminal or incriminating evidence brought forward by more witnesses, therefore I don't think senators had anything to loose calling more witnesses, however, I think what irritated them was the fully partisan proceedings in the house, the long wait by Pelosi to illegally influence Senate rules, and the lack of substantial charges. The managers claimed to have their case beyond a shadow of a doubt, why did they need more? If it was conclusive, did they think that more people would be swayed by more "conclusive" evidence. I don't think senators had any fear of what might be said by more witnesses but I think they would have been as well off to go through the motions first just to prove what might happen when the Schiff hits the fan.

      It's the job of the house impeachment committee to provide and procure witnesses as well as a case. Schiff, Pelosi, and Nadler did not do that because every witness they called said they had zero firsthand knowledge
