A friend of mine had a party when we were 17...invited a bunch of us from school. They decided the cool thing would be to use their projector to show movies on the side of their barn...kinda like a private movie theater outside on blankets...well they showed this movie....and behind us were acres of cotton fields. Ever seen a bunch of terrified 18-16 year olds? I'm sure that was still the scariest drive/walk home we ever had.
i will never forget seeing signs as a kid in the cinemas. still one of the scariest movies ever. scariest scene goes to the kids party, second scariest scene is that army guy.

Honesty, that was the part that always unsettled me most as well. I think it’s because it happened in the middle of the day in front of so many people. Usually in creepy movies these things happen at night and when no one other than the main characters are around to witness. I wonder if it’s because it didn’t “follow the classic rules” and thus introducing a new level of unpredictability that made it extra unsettling.

I remember seeing the newscast alien scene as a kid, and it scared me for a long time! Watching it later as an adult, it still freaked me out. M. Night did an amazing job with this movie.
I live I rural Kansan. Our house and fields are very much like this. My son is non verbal, autistic and loved eloping in the cornfields when Bo sized. It was terrifying. I would call and call and he wouldn't answer. I could see stalks move which could be him or a critter. And I could sometimes hear him laugh. Our fields are very moist, and with adult weight, you often sink into the mud a few makes running hard. It will suck your shoes off your feet even. There's snakes and holes. I have broken my ankle tripping in one and had to crawl/limp back home. Nightmare fuel. Hearing him giggle while I was frantically searching was just the creepiest.
All of this sounds terrifying. I've always loved the idea of being able to look out over crop fields and to enjoy the peace. After reading that I'm a bit happier that I live in the middle of London. :)

Another Kansan here. I used to play in the corn fields all the time. the biggest concern is indeed the snakes. The dangerous ones really blend in with leaves, and when you're a little kid having fun, you don't really pay attention to the ground that hard. Plus we'd either walk miles away from anyone else or our parents would drop us off for hours.

This movie is so underrated. When it first released, it had some trouble because the marketing never once hinted that this wasn't an alien movie, but was instead a movie about grief, faith, and loss, so people went in expecting a scary sci-fi movie and were VERY confused when they didn't get War of the Worlds. I'm glad it's being rediscovered and people are appreciating it now, because honestly, I know they say Sixth Sense is the magnum opus of Shyamalan, but I think this one is up there with it and I actually like it more (not saying it's better, but it's just the one I LIKE more).
The alien reveal at the kids party really scared me. Another tense moment for me was when Merle broke the light bulb, leaving everyone in the dark. After the dog peed on the floor, Graham suggested taking the dog to a doctor instead of to the vet because it was the vet who accidentally killed his wife. Jack may have been right when he misread vet as vegetarian; when Graham reached for the knife, there were chopped vegetables on the counter top. The jerk at the army recruiting place was named Lionel. Maybe he's the Lionel that they thought was pranking them.
What a great suggestion! I'm not all that familiar with it, but i think it's an alien invasion movie right? After this one i'm weirdly craving more of that 😅
I love how everything came together in the end: 1. The wife predicted this. 2. Merril "swing away". 3. Bo had the thing about water. 4. Morgan had asthma so no alien poison got in, his lungs were closed. 5. Graham saw the SIGNS!

I've seen this movie MANY MANY times over the past 20 years. It's actually one of those movies where you notice new little easter eggs each time you watch. After like the 20th time watching it (which was years ago) I stopped noticing anything new. When you pointed out that Joaquin Phoenix misses the board several times in a row while he's hammering it, that was a moment for me. I'd thought there were no more new easter eggs to find, so thanks for that 🙂🙂.
“Is it a playful scream?” Dude, for several years I had this neighborhood girl who when outside playing with her brothers liked to scream as if the world was ending just for the fun of it I guess. It put me on edge every time. And every time I swore it would be the last, she would be the girl who cried wolf, but every damn time I had to take a peak over our fence to make sure she wasn’t being freakn kidnapped or something 🙄
Yes I've been there. I just tell myself at least I'm watching out so if God forbid something does happen I was there when it happened. But yes, it's hilarious and biologically funny that children laughs are the same as their screams and crying until they hit puberty.
This film is M Night's greatest in my opinion. Pure art , and as perfectly written as a film could be . All of the events leading right up to the very evidence that Mel's character needed to understand that a higher power was sending him signs all along . This movie brilliantly mixes Faith , philosophy, and ET in a very very cool way ! I wish M Night Shyamalan would start making movies of this caliber again.

I watched this movie by myself at the cinema. There was only me and one other person sat pretty far from me. It was quite a scary experience and I'll never forget it.
I saw it in a crowded theater and everyone jumping at the bday party/TV scene is still such a great collective memory of people all moving and experiencing something together. 😂
So glad to see more reactors watching Signs. It’s a great movie. I grew up in the foothills of Appalachia outside of a small farming community. There were maybe 3,000 people in the town & 5,000 in the county. We were surrounded by miles & miles of corn & tobacco & woods. Whenever the dogs in the area started barking aggressively at night the adults would say “Those d@mn boogers are back” & everyone had to go inside & the next couple of days us kids wouldn’t be allowed to go into the woods or crops. We’d be told to stay close to the house or “the boogers will get you”. Boogers is hillbilly for Bigfoot/Sasquatch. Never saw anything - aliens or boogers - but a healthy fear of things hiding in the darkness was instilled in us from a young age.

Yes, that's exactly what it looked like in the cinema back then when the alien hand came out from under the pantry door. The entire audience, everyone in the cinema, including me, was incredibly frightened and jumped back. I'll never forget that... 😅😂
Ray wasnt drunk and didnt mean to kill the mom. His whole speech in his car is symbolism and him trying to explain how he feels the accident wasn't a coincidence.
I’m a huge horror buff (which is why I’m here in the first place because I keep searching for horror reactions) and even though this might not be classified as a horror, it really is one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. Some of these scenes haunts my childhood nightmares. Adore this movie

I have loved this movie since it first came out! =) The horror drama sci fi mix is awesome!!! And 5 year old Abigail Breslin killed her performance, so glad she has a successful career!
M.Night Sha(I cant spell that) is such a good, multilayered story teller. Like Hitchcock they often have a spooky component but the key bit is just good storytelling and relationships.
FYI: the doctor, “Ray” is played by the director M. Night. I think he’s actually very good, also has a part in his “Lady in the Water”, I think his performance is very Ben better. I’d recommend a couple of his movies “Devil” sort of a who-done-it, (like Clue but horror). And “The Village”, both very thought provoking. Recommend : “Children of the Corn” from 1985, ( you will get a laugh from the old special effects 😆), but the concept is really creepy.

Alot of people thought it was lame that water being what killed the aliens but I always thought it was clever. Not all planets have water. So if these aliens were scouting for a new place, earth being 2/3 water would not be a good choice lol. So once they figured that out, they left but abandoned their wounded aliens. Everything ties together to make sense in the end.

Wakefield?! You’re close to the Conjuring 2! Ray, the “Vegetarian” is M. Night Shamalan, the Director. He has a small part in each film he does. He’s cute but not as cute as Jack! 🤤 The score to this film adds so much to the alien invasion fear that most people have. I wish they would have cast anyone else other than Mel Gibson. Other than him, it’s a good atmospheric film. Have you seen “Paul”? It’s an alien film with Simon Pegg and his dufuss friend in “Shaun of the Dead” and it’s way funnier. It can be your second alien film.
Crop circles were a real thing back in the late 1990s. It seems very few people know or remember this but they started popping up everywhere, all over the world, in maybe a span of 2 years or so. I was still a child back then but I remember the media didn't want to report it in the news too much, they just spoke about it for a bit and then got back to their everyday crime and politics. Then the discovery channel made a documentary in which they "debunked" the crop circles as being made probably by some guys with a wooden plank who were trying to make a joke. They never took into consideration what it would mean for those "guys" to travel to Russia, South America, Egypt and so on. And they never took into consideration that some guys with a plank couldn't make the formation radioactive and bring there dust particles from outer space which have both been found in every formation. I rememeber exactely they showed on the news an australian farmer who was very angry about it because his wheat crop was destroyed, they didn't appear just in korn fields. Then there was an eye witness who saw 2 ufos fly above a field really close to the ground and where they flew, the formation would start appearing in the field. I don't know how this whole worldwide event was forgotten in the mists of history, it happened only 20 years ago.

Btw the aliens are actually demons, hence they can’t open doors and the holy water etc, also love all the Easter eggs in this film - the signs are not the crop circles but all the signs the dad gets from god like the coincidences a water, his sons asthma, the baseball bat etc

Great film & fun reaction! Other viewers have suggested War of the Worlds (the 2005 remake of a classic 1953 film), as one of the best alien invasion films. For a comic change of pace, I could also recommend Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), regarded by some as one of the WORST movies of all time of any genre, almost beyond parody. Very few YT reactors have actually taken it on. I think you'd have fun with it!

3 strikes make one out. A strike is either a swing and a miss, a hit out of bounds, or the pitcher put it right in the "strike zone" above the plate, and the batter did not swing. Another out is being tagged out at the plate if the thrower gets the ball there before you. Also, if your hit is caught without a bounce. 3 outs and the teams switch offensive/defense. The game is 9 of these "innings" in series, unless tied, it will go another inning(s) until the score is not.
The "vegetarian" thing killed me :D As a family drama, this movie is excellent. As an alien invasion movie. . . I just have a hard time getting past the glaring issue that beings capable of intergalactic travel should be intelligent enough to NOT invade a planet that's 70% water if their only weakness IS water. It would be like us trying to invade a planet full of acid, and even we aren't that dumb.

Ray wasnt drunk and didnt mean to kill the mom. His whole speech in his car is symbolism and him trying to explain how he feels the accident wasn't a coincidence.
I’m a huge horror buff (which is why I’m here in the first place because I keep searching for horror reactions) and even though this might not be classified as a horror, it really is one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. Some of these scenes haunts my childhood nightmares. Adore this movie

Loved your reaction to this. The party scene on the news scared me when i first saw it.. still unsettles me to this day. Also the scene at dinner will never fail to make me cry with all the emotions happening. This movie is absolutely amazing a favourite of mine. 👽

I have loved this movie since it first came out! =) The horror drama sci fi mix is awesome!!! And 5 year old Abigail Breslin killed her performance, so glad she has a successful career!
M.Night Sha(I cant spell that) is such a good, multilayered story teller. Like Hitchcock they often have a spooky component but the key bit is just good storytelling and relationships.
My favorite is how Jack says Dan so much.
FYI: the doctor, “Ray” is played by the director M. Night. I think he’s actually very good, also has a part in his “Lady in the Water”, I think his performance is very Ben better.
I’d recommend a couple of his movies “Devil” sort of a who-done-it, (like Clue but horror). And “The Village”, both very thought provoking.
Recommend : “Children of the Corn” from 1985, ( you will get a laugh from the old special effects 😆), but the concept is really creepy.
The little boy is Mc Cauley Culkins little brother ...and the little girl is the young girl in "Zombieland'

This movie was shot literally in and around my home town area. I know the farm and houses in/near Doylestown and New Hope PA where the shoots were. Still one of my fav M.Night movies.
Graham mentions not wanting to take the sick dog to the vet and suggests a doctor instead because ray is the local vet or rather...vegetarian.

Alot of people thought it was lame that water being what killed the aliens but I always thought it was clever. Not all planets have water. So if these aliens were scouting for a new place, earth being 2/3 water would not be a good choice lol. So once they figured that out, they left but abandoned their wounded aliens. Everything ties together to make sense in the end.
Of all the places that aliens could choose to visit, why on earth would they choose Wakefield? 🤣
I've only ever driven past Wakefield, thinking i may have to head down there to see what all the fuss is about! 😅

The score to this film adds so much to the alien invasion fear that most people have. I wish they would have cast anyone else other than Mel Gibson. Other than him, it’s a good atmospheric film. Have you seen “Paul”? It’s an alien film with Simon Pegg and his dufuss friend in “Shaun of the Dead” and it’s way funnier. It can be your second alien film.
Seen it in the cinemas as a kid when it was released. Went to it without any knowledge of what it was about.

Crop circles were a real thing back in the late 1990s. It seems very few people know or remember this but they started popping up everywhere, all over the world, in maybe a span of 2 years or so. I was still a child back then but I remember the media didn't want to report it in the news too much, they just spoke about it for a bit and then got back to their everyday crime and politics. Then the discovery channel made a documentary in which they "debunked" the crop circles as being made probably by some guys with a wooden plank who were trying to make a joke. They never took into consideration what it would mean for those "guys" to travel to Russia, South America, Egypt and so on. And they never took into consideration that some guys with a plank couldn't make the formation radioactive and bring there dust particles from outer space which have both been found in every formation. I rememeber exactely they showed on the news an australian farmer who was very angry about it because his wheat crop was destroyed, they didn't appear just in korn fields. Then there was an eye witness who saw 2 ufos fly above a field really close to the ground and where they flew, the formation would start appearing in the field. I don't know how this whole worldwide event was forgotten in the mists of history, it happened only 20 years ago.
Whole thing could have been avoided if they just had a decent sprinkler system.

M Night shyamalan did a good job with Signs. It was good and scary. The story is good. Alien movies are always good.

Btw the aliens are actually demons, hence they can’t open doors and the holy water etc, also love all the Easter eggs in this film - the signs are not the crop circles but all the signs the dad gets from god like the coincidences a water, his sons asthma, the baseball bat etc
I hadn't heard of the demon allusion theory before - wow, that's cool! It makes the movie even more profound for me and overturns the audience's claim about stupid aliens coming to take over a planet that is 70% water!!!!

Great film & fun reaction! Other viewers have suggested War of the Worlds (the 2005 remake of a classic 1953 film), as one of the best alien invasion films. For a comic change of pace, I could also recommend Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), regarded by some as one of the WORST movies of all time of any genre, almost beyond parody. Very few YT reactors have actually taken it on. I think you'd have fun with it!

The "vegetarian" thing killed me :D As a family drama, this movie is excellent. As an alien invasion movie. . . I just have a hard time getting past the glaring issue that beings capable of intergalactic travel should be intelligent enough to NOT invade a planet that's 70% water if their only weakness IS water. It would be like us trying to invade a planet full of acid, and even we aren't that dumb.
Signs and Shyamalan became the best paid screenplay/writer in that time for this movie.
Great film, and can i say Jack - a fabulous choice of book.....eagerly waiting for Fry's 4th instalment later this year!
