- Signs (2002) First Time Watching Movie Reaction, Review, and Commentary for JL. Many moments of confusion over the alien's scouting/navigation departments and MANY thoughts about how close this movie came to being tossed in the "never again" pile over two dogs and a kid were had.

"F*ck that, go to Lowe's and get a sprinkler." I'm literally wiping the tears from my eyes.
😂😂😂
😂 I’ve watched this movie a bunch of times, thought a lot about it, and seen a lot of reactors do this movie and yet I’ve never thought of this genius strategy with the sprinklers. 😂
This was the first alien film that scared me. It felt personal. The previous ones were always about the government and military fighting the aliens, and it always just felt like an action story in which we would always win. This film made me feel like the aliens could actually touch and affect me. That scared me.
Same. I was 9-10 when I first saw this. This movie scared me more than a lot of others. I haven't been able to express it, but saying that the feeling they could actually touch and affect me without it being an action movie is straight on point.
That's the perfect way to describe the way I felt about this movie watching it at 11.
The Fourth Kind is creepy as balls, imo. I watched it with two buddies while we had a few drinks, all of us in our mid 20s at the time, and we all agreed it was super creepy.
It's because it feels like it could happen.
Communion gave me the same feeling as a child. It's definitely a very bizarre film and not as grounded as Signs though. There are a few scenes that really got to me, namely the scene where Christopher Walken's character sees the alien watching him.
Seen The Fourth Kind? Really creepy
Being born and raised in a Scandinavian country, Norway to be specific, I can confirm that the humanoids in the corn-field in this movie were, in fact, NOT Scandinavians.
They were Dutch ... In this case Pennsylvania -Dutch! .... ha!
😂😂😂❤
About as tall though? 😅
I don't believe you.
That's exactly what a Scandinavian roof jumper would say.
That and “Børk ! Børk ! Bøørk !”
The boy is not speaking Spanish. He's speaking Portuguese and he said: :It is behind the garage. It's over there behind."
Love your reactions. Always genuine. 😎
Thank you! I always thought it wasn't spanish... wasn't sure tho.
@@annie_42 They speak Portuguese in Brazil because the Portuguese had colonized Brazil way when.
Thank you for the translation! I never knew
Man, your compassion for babies, furry and human, is admirable. Even in a movie I appreciate the value you put on life. Cheers my friend. 👍
Yes, absolutely. 👍
"I say we lock the doors and get some guns. I mean you got a Culkin in there, he's gotta have some of his brother in him. Make some boobie traps!"
I'm dying! 🤣🤣🤣😂😂
"You got a Culkin in there...make some booby traps!"
☠️☠️☠️
Lmfaooooo
Also “we’re not calling the cops, we’re calling u-haul!” Needs to be a merch shirt
Yes, I'd buy it😍
One of the best things to come out of this movie is the shot of the three sitting there with their tinfoil hats. Makes me laugh every time.
Same
"bro you aint got a stick, a gun and you don't believe in god. what are you doing?!" LMFAO
"We're not callin the cops, we're callin u-haul!" 🤣
I used to complain about the water thing, but realized they weren't planning to take over the planet. They were harvesting humans for food. Think of it like how a hunter might go into a dangerous area to hunt for food.
Whoa! What? Any details?
It doesn't necessarily have to be for food. It could have been for dissection, experiments, or other purposes. All we know is that they were seen gassing the people and taking them.
I was thinking, the military guy had it right. They came for reconnaissance, found out our planet is mostly water (including the humans btw, arent we mostly water?) and were left for a time by the others on the ships. They returned to pick up some.
@@anyviolet indeed
true, didnt think of that
The little boy at the birthday party is saying in Portuguese, that it's behind (the bush.)
And come to think of it, I always thought the alien just strolled across the alley there but he was actually hiding behind the bush watching them that whole time. Even creepier.
Behind the garage*
Never thought about it… Always thought the alien was hiding/scared, but thinking he was observing the kids gives me the heebie jeebies
I’m sure everyone is excited for the party scene scare but a scene that doesn’t get enough love is the dinner scene where they make all the food. it’s a perfect scene and not enough people talk about it.
Shyamalan taking a note from Spielberg in his use of a dinner scene.
It's a heartbreaking beautiful scene, it tells you everything.
Truth!
I am elated that you pointed that out. I always found it to be the best scene of the film and criminally overlooked.
That whole arc starting from dinner time until they get to the basement is the best part of the movie. Particularly the scene where a broken father is convinced that he's reached his final moments and he's choosing to use that time to remember the days when each of his beloved children were born. It's one of the most beautiful (and underrated) moments in cinema history, and Mel Gibson sells it. I cry every single time.
This movie made me a fan of M. Night Shyamalan. The way the family's story is weaved within the alien plot is superb. Plus the arc for Mel Gibson's character is surprisingly beautiful.
There's an interesting theory about this movie that honestly made me appreciate the movie even more, is that those Alien species are dying themselves, and that this "invasion" of a planet that has their weakness was purely out of desperation, because when you see one in the broadcast, that one alien is hunched over in the bushes, looking really afraid, they're usually seen alone too; and also that last alien holding Morgan also looked scared, it looked like a robber taking a hostage and threatening to kill them, he's also clearly nervous from the way he's moving.
The script makes it clear they're never alone, it's hard to pick up in the movie, but they always travel in large groups
During the house invasion, i always assumed there where just 2, but if you watch the deleted scenes, there's clearly at least 6
And in the script, they say thay when they where covering the windows, Graham could see streeks in the cornfield moving towards the house, at first a few, then many all heading to the house, and one of the work prints with the radio segment near the end mentioned how they would hide in the shadows, then overwhelmed people with pure numbers
Yes. The desperation aspect definitely needs to be considered. It’s hard enough to find a planet with life on it, so if they are desperate for resources, then they may just take the risk and land on Earth, regardless of what may happen because the alternative is their demise.
I heard a another theories that they're slave to another alien race and used as cannon fodder
They were demons. Hurt by holy water. Nuff said.
@@VoidVintage holy water??
My favorite Shyamalan movie. I love the dinner table scene; Mel Gibson can play devastation so well, and in that scene he is so terrified for his family and doing all he can to hold it together.
My favorite too
That man might be a crazy sum'bitch, but he's a damn good actor/director.
@@bethking7348 ditto!
'You know they are arguing on the way back'.
😂
👽
I'm not big on this movie, but that line "There's a monster outside my room, can I have a glass of water?" is one of my top ten favorite movie lines ever.
I've seen this movie SO many times and this was the first time it struck me: that's not a laugh line, that's a strategy!
Because you know... hydration is important. lol
@@anyviolet like for real. That little girl practically had The Shining and knew exactly how to beat the aliens. she wasn't asking for a glass of water to drink she was asking for ammunition. Lol
Did you notice how she said she needed a glass of water to fight the monster? Instant foreshadowing. She knew what they needed to fight them. She just needed to bless the water first to fight the demons. Not aliens.
I'm with you on the dog. How they could ever forget their dog outside, is unforgivable :(
They put the dog in the barn, I think Mel Gibson says that. But they went after the dog, when it started barking.
@@Fernando-dt8je he says they're gonna put the dog in the garage after they eat dinner
The two puppies sleeping with their heads together was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen😊
People give M. Night & Signs a lot of crap, but I really enjoy this movie. I saw it at a drive-in when I was 7 and I've always had a soft spot for it.
That must have been really scary!
People always pick on creative people who step outside the box and don't follow the formula. "supposed to develop this way. supposed to have 3 acts. supposed to not be any longer than this length. blah blah blah." all determined by marketeers and loser college professors who teach because they cannot compete in the real market, not successful artists/creators. sad
Hey my only problem with the story is the aliens being deadly vulnerable to water... You know the substance that makes up most of our planet, it even randomly rains with water... Lol you know i wonder what would happen if a human spit on the aliens? Is that how we beat them? Lol
I was about twenty when I saw it and I was scared shitless for 95% of it. XD
@@devilreject6878 Cliche complaint that makes no sense. Most planets with abundant life is likely going to have water, considering water seems to be a necessity for life. And the limited number of planets with abundant life probably limits the choosiness of desperate raiders.
Interesting fact from the DVD bonus features: the first scene to be filmed on this movie was the car crash flashback scene. It was filmed on September 12th, 2001. So needless to say, everyone involved already had the emotions ready. They did a candlelight vigil before they started shooting too.
One of my favorite reactions from you. 💯 Bro you jumped 3 times in the first 3 minutes 🤣🤣🤣
When the little girl says, “There’s a monster outside my room. May I have a glass of water?” It is the equivalent of saying, “There’s a stranger outside, can you hand me my gun?”
It was subtle but that's how she expressed herself with the water being her protection.
The way I look at the water thing is that they wanted something else here enough that it was worth the risk to them. Like look at Deadliest Catch. It's dangerous to humans to fish there, but it's still done because we want something that can't be caught elsewhere. Plenty of risks are taken all the time because the reward is considered worth it.
Keep in mind that they purposely landed in areas where there was not an abundance of water such as the coast or at lakes. They likely took a chance that humans would not realize or discover this weakness before they quick attacked and crippled the Globe in multiple areas. Everything has a weakness so why can't theirs be water based on their molecular make up? I like your comparison.
It's remotely possibly they hadn't encountered water as pure as ours. Only way I can accept it.
Except we don't fish buck naked with bare hands. If those aliens just had protective suits (you are on another planet!) and some tools - it would have been a different story.
It was mentioned in the movie that they were here for us. Humans. To harvest us. Apparently they needed food more than they were afraid of water. OR... maybe they'd simply never encountered water before.
@@FallenRingbearer Or was it the what was in our water that was the real issue? Like War of the Worlds where it was the shit in our water, food, & air that killed them.
I've seen this movie as a kid and thought it's an alien mivie. Then saw it again as an adult and realized the aliens are a metaphor for the "demons" we have to put up with from thrauma. That's why the story focuses on this family and the guy who was in the accident. He locked his demon in the house and is running away, but he is aware that everything happens for a reason. The pastor however isn't on the same wavelenght yet, but he's getting there by the end of the movie. Loved the reaction video. I am glad to see people react to older movies because old movies were so much better than the majority of recent ones.
Nope. It's an alien movie
@@KurtMidas1510 I still like how he sees it because it goes right to Mel Gibson's change of heart. From just being lucky to a guy who can see signs. This guy's comment is seeing the sign in the movies and that's why it's an art.
@@jayeisenhardt1337 this guys comment is a summary of reviews that came out 20 years ago in magazines or today on yt. I Heard it to and yes and you can see it as a metapher for demons. But clearly it's an alien movie
It's not just a metaphor, the entire movie surrounds god, religion and faith! People are quick to dismiss that the creatures are demons but why make the main character a preacher? Why else are the creatures so primitive, without suits? We never see ships, just light, like portals. When the news says a way has been found to defeat them they say it is found in the middle east... near holy ground, near jerusalum, because It's not water that defeats them, it's holy water! That's why Bo's birth story is important, she is meant to be a kind of angel, her blessing all of the water glasses make them holy water. This isn't a religious movie but it is a movie about religion, faith, demons (personal, metaphorical and corporeal), and SIGNS! As in signs from god!
@@moviesthatsit Already knew all that. Yes, I agree.
Was dying when Jay was trying to duck down to see under the door. Lol
“Fuck that, go to Lowe’s and get a sprinkler” is both hilarious, and context of the movie, is an A1 idea lmao
"I hope its not a movie about Street signs" had me loling 🤣
My favorite moment in the movie is the
“there was a reason he had asthma. His lungs were closed”
Oh boy…when I say I ugly cried when that boy breathed I mean full on sobbing in the theater. I made other people cry too because I was just as relived as Mel Gibson😂😂🤷🏾♂️👍🏾
"Felt wrong not to swing."
...and THAT"S when I knew I liked his character.
Great reaction J Man 🙌! Abigail Breslin's acting was just phenomenal for her age! She was just as brilliant in "Little Miss Sunshine" (2006), which earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress and she was just 10 years old!
"We're not calling the cops.... We're calling U-Haul." 😂
Yes, excellent movie. You'd like it. 😊
Well, seeing as there are no planets with fleshy beasts that we know of...the aliens may have had no choice.
He didn’t console his daughter first cause he himself hasn’t yet grieved. All the pressure of holding down everything he finally just broke down
"We'd have shot dem mother fuckers and had em on the grill!" DAMNIT J, too funny! 🤣 🤣 🤣 Great reaction as always! 👊🏻
👊
Please consider reacting to "The Village" - another Shyamalan mystery with a unique plot. Wonderful collection of actors including Phoenix.
Yes!
So excited to share this with everyone.
There's some seriously funny moments sprinkled in, amongst the terror.
Heh. "Sprinkled." J's right though. You get those sprinklers and run 'em all night! XD
I love all of Shyamalan's cameos in his films. It seemed right that he played Ray Reddy in this. Signs is definitely in my top 10 favourite films.
Two words to stop the aliens:
SUPER SOAKERS
Love the thumbnail 😂
⚡️Thanks❤
Using crop circles to sell sodas!🤣🤣🤣 Black Cherry Shasta is a favorite. I remember, having parties in my youth, we’d have Shasta because you could select individual cans of different flavors to make your own case.
Oh man that brings back memories of how fun it was to go with mom to the grocery store on Saturdays and getting to pick out Shasta sodas for the week for 5-10 cents a can. There was also a Hostess outlet on the next block that'd have excess Hostess products that were nearing the end of their shelf life so you could get 10 for $1. The early 90s were great!
@@pencilnecked1579 a decade earlier for me
11:21 - Your facial reaction was gold- You looked like you were suddenly back in WV listening to someone rant about sodas. 😂
My family has been going around saying "it's contaminate" for years. This movie is a great mix of spooky and funny.
"Our water bill will be high as Willie Nelson"
Hahahahahahahahaha Too Genius J.
I forgot Abigail Bresden was in this. Loved her in "Little Miss Sunshine" and "The Call"!
The little kid in the scene is speaking Portuguese, he says- “It’s behind the garage” Then in English “It’s behind”.
"You're a girl his 19,000 glasses of water you're good. "
Love this movie!!! Mel Gibson had so many great moments along with the rest of the cast.
"I'm insane with anger!" 🤣🤣🤣
Never understood why an alien species that is hurt by water would come to Earth without even a single rain coat. Lucky they didn't attack on a rainy day.
or go to Seattle
That's like asking why the tripod pilots never vaccinated. You just gotta accept it.
@Overlord0011 I accept it as a huge plot hole. The tension in the movie is well done though, and the acting is top tier, especially for an M.Night movie.
If humans are a food source, we're made up of 60% water, so do they dehydrate the people?
They came for the people. There's no one to eat on Mars...
24:05 Joaquin Phoenix: "Move children!"
Murder Whistle: "I... I know... Get the **** away!"
24:11 I was waiting for this scene! So glad you kept it in the CZcams version.
We all had that reaction when the alien appeared, scared the living bejeesus out of me xD
Could be one of the best jumpscares I've ever been subjected to. It's so suspenseful, we all know it's gonna come and STILL it managed to make me jump out of my seat and go "nope, nope, nope" pausing the VHS-player until I gathered enough courage to continue.
Dope reaction! 10/10
Edit: So, I've always thought of the aliens coming to Earth as a raid, not a full scale invasion. They didn't want nothing but to stock up on some provisions and then continue their journey elsewhere. They scouted beforehand and probably got detailed data about where to go and not to go to avoid water, and even during a raid you expect some losses, but in the grand scheme of things it'd be worth it.
So, down, snatch some people, up and away.
"...it been popcorn everywhere..." 🤣🤣🤣 Always appreciate these reactions! Thank you for the laughs as always!
😂😂
Saying that some someone dropped the ball invading earth while being allergic to water, and that 'someone' needs to be brought into a meeting was hilarious
My man be looking back at the camera like Jim Halpert and it cracks me up 🤣🤣
This movie has a special place in my heart because when it came out I was in high school and I thought it was so cool. I remember watching this on the old school black cable boxes that you could steal movie channels from😂😂😂😂😂
"you don't have a stick, a gun, and you don't believe in god right now. What are you doing?!" Lol I love your reactions so
At 24:12 - Bro when you jumped, I damn near choked on my drink 😂😅😂
Even the shuddup was different 😂
Another great alien movie to watch and react to is "Fire in the Sky"!
Yes! That movie was great
Yes and based on a true story. Not sure if it was debunked but I believed it when I was younger
"We're not calling the cops! We're calling U-Haul!" 🤣🤣
"So, Captain Zobax. You thought it would be a good idea to invade a planet whose surface area is 70% WATER?!? I'm afraid that we, of the Galactic High Council, are going to have to ask you to clean out your desk. You are so fired." 🤣🤣🤣
There was a Robot Chicken skit about the alien in the pantry. When the alien got his fingers cut off it started scream saying "all I wanted to do was barrow a cup of sugar to bake a cake".
I remember that skit, and then the next scene shows them sitting at a table with M Nights family, and the aliens' hand is bandaged.
@@ryeguy7941 yeah LOL. "What A Twist!"

‘We would’ve had em on the grill 🥩’ 😂 im dying bro lmao 💀💀 Hilarious reaction
You had me laughing so hard I forgot how traumatizing this film was lol You couldn't tell me aliens weren't real after this.
Saw this in theaters when it first came out! Great jump scares, great story!
SHASTA ✊
Did you catch all the ‘signs’?
Her water glasses, his asthma, swing away, everything that happened had a reason leading to this time.
And God telling Mel's wife to tell Merrill to swing away. A sign for Mel to believe and to renew his Faith in God.
Bo's Mama said she was an angel the day she was born...that was "contaminated" Holy Water - lol
Little Miss Sunshine is another banger worth checking out
There’s so many great things that I love about this movie, and it’s nice to see someone else experience it for the first time. I agree with many of the other commenters that yes, the dinner scene is perfect. I always tear up though with Graham helping Morgan through his asthma attack, his battle with his faith (because I understand where he’s coming from), and when he sees his wife for the last time. If you like this movie, then definitely watch Lady in the Water and maybe even The Village.
The little boy in the video wasn't speaking Spanish he was speaking Portuguese, he said "it's hiding behind the garage, it's over there!!!!!".
The performances in this movie are incredible.
lol this thumbnail goes right up there with A League of Their Own 🤣🤣🤣
Your comment on the why they came to earth made me cry 😂 that was the highlight! love this movie, one of my favs for Shyamalan.
"licking toes, you nasty!" immediately thought "was the director Tarintino?" lol
8:56 "Pack it up..." 😆
I don't know if water was their weakness to be honest. Maybe it was holy water that was their weakness, not regular water. The little girl, according to the dad retelling her story, mentions how she was a little angel. Throughout the film she sees things and knows things that a regular kid shouldn't. Add the fact that mel Gibson was more or lessed protected by God makes me think she blessed the water, making the aliens weak to them. Also the news mentions how it was the middle east that found a way to defeat them.
“I’M INSANE WITH ANGER!!!” 😂
I always liked the dark comedy idea that their Species were here to help. Like “I’m sorry about your dog! He attacked me! And idk if you noticed but their saliva is mostly water!”
“Hey! Let me out of here!” *cuts off fingers* “look, I can cure your sons asma right now!” *picks up bat* “yo no look! Look!” *cures lungs* *wack with a bat* “it said that I’m going to die.”
Alien: yes! If you don’t change the way you treat your planet it’s going to kill you!!!
Glad you watched this movie. Truly an underrated classic. My favorite line: " There's a monster outside my room, can I have a glass of water?" And great jump scares all around.
I was like 4 or 5 when this movie came out. My parents rented it for us to watch together and I was terrified from start to finish but what’s worse was my parents fell asleep about halfway through the film. So there I was practically alone watching this creepy as movie about gangly ass aliens and THAT scene at the kid party messed me up! I used to think the aliens would walk by my bedroom door frame like it did in the party scene. Also the way jaws ruined the ocean for many people, this movie ruined cornfields for me.
I don't think people can appreciate Joaquin Phoenix's acting around 8:40. Although minor, you can see the sheer fright and panic he expresses through his eyes when he spots the alien. I think he knew it DEFINITELY wasn't human in that moment. That scene will always make my skin crawl, for sure.
My favorite part is droggo crashed out on the bed. Dude is chillin
Was at my greatgranny's house at night when I first watched this. She lived in a very similar location as the family in the movie. Isolated with fields all around. Quite an experience...
"What you doing!?! You dont have a stick, a gun, and you dont believe in God right now" 😂
Great Gibson movies: Gallipoli, The Year of Living Dangerously, Mad Max trilogy, Air America, Payback (tied with Signs as my favorite Gibson movie), Tequila Sunrise, Chicken Run
I believe you said you liked Woody Harrelson in your movie review of no country for old men which made me think of this movie.
I haven’t seen in it forever and its called “King pin” All I recall is it was bizarre and funny. Hopefully you’ll do the reaction because if not, I’ll have to revisit it by myself. 😎🙏👏
I saw this with at the time was my girlfriend later became my wife and now my ex-wife. Back when it was released in theaters. My wife comes in the most populated Muslim country in the world, Indonesia. But she was born and raised Christian and is a born again. She cried so much during the scenes. Where Jesus was with and abused by the Roman soldiers. Her tears and emotions were real. Take care and be well always ! PS give my love to the co-pilots ! ❤
i personally believe that there are no coincidences!
I always thought the Aliens didn't know they had a weakness to water until they got to Earth and expierenced it.
😂 the thumbnail is genius
Now we need a shirt, with the kids wearing tinfoil hats, that says ‘little kids got powers’ 😅
JL, if you liked this M. Night Shyamalan movie you’ll love Unbreakable ✌️
Ahhhh, when M.Night Shyamalan was the talk of the town for all his movies.'The Sixth Sense' was his best one.
I feel like 'Ransom' was Mel Gibsons best dramatic role.
I love watching your reactions and your dogs in the background. I laugh as much at you and the dogs as I do the movies if not more.
