It's amazing. You see him make a joke about how gay people don't show up to work on time because they're all caught up in sex and drugs, and everyone laughs, because he's so obviously kidding around. But as soon as he makes the exact same joke about women, the crowd goes silent, because suddenly, even though he's so obviously kidding there too, they think he's being serious. It's such a double standard.

Chase Matthews bill uses the audience's commanded laughter to save himself when shit starts getting real. The facts start pouring out, Bill interrupts with some witty one liner, the crowd laughs, then Bill motions and talks over their laughter to move onto another topic.

In turn, what Maher always says about the Republicans that come on is how much he appreciates and respects them, coming into a very hostile environment. Very few Democrats are willing to go on Fox in contrast.

R Yanzo - A lot of folks have seeked to define it, incitement to violence against minorities comes up a lot in these discussions. It's tricky, if you found yourself in Times Square and someone was shouting that those who voted for Trump/Republicans should be put on the electric chair, should they be allowed to continue or should the police stop the person. Rightly or wrongly I think most people in the USA would say s/he should be asked to leave and persist from shouting this out in a public space, or even inside a university campus hall.

It would have been nice if Maher had let Milo finish answering any of his questions... It's difficult to give an answer of any substance if you keep getting cut off as soon as you start speaking.
"Substance" and Yiannopoulos are two different galaxies, dear. One doesn't need to wait so long if the drift of the answer has already been understood. You can even read the posture without waiting for the words. There *is* such a thing as journalistic interruption, which I find wearing, but this here isn't it.
If they had let him finish a sentence he would have just continued saying more and more controversial things just to piss people off. It would've been a lot of bad press for HBO.

They prefer the Trump method of using short sentences with short and simple words, and an either naive or blatantly ignorant message as that is the real way to connect with the mentally challenged. Hitchens, Nye and Dawkins would not be able to change their minds because they would not be understood.
In this very video you can actually see how incredibly smart one of the alt-rights supposed champions is. Maher points out the obvious irony of a gay man generalizing all gays as having the same negative qualities he has but then standing up for catholocism which would deem him a natural sinner and living crime using that very same method of generalizing. Now an actual intelligent person would be well aware that this will be a contradiction any debater with an opposing position would point out and they would come fully prepared. Instead Milo brushes it off with a "I'm so pretty, teehee." hoping that Maher won't push the issue and since Maher has a modicum of respect for his guests he did in fact let it slide.
The only thing Milo said that actually had any intrinsic value was pointing out the importance of free speech and that "refusing to show up to a debate means you lose the debate" but those are not exactly brilliant ideas but the wonderous thing called "common sense". And I will agree that a lot of people on the left (and obviously almost everyone on the right) seem to lack that common sense nowadays as protests to shut up a person on one side and the whole "fake news" bullshit on the other are both ways of trying to stand in the way of free speech and a free press. Still doesn't mean that Milo and Ben stop being disgraceful just because the other side has morons too.

I hadn't previously caught wind of this guy. How sad. So much relevance to this moment now. Never mind annoyance with Maher's behaviour. Ultimately, he brought out stimulating responses to doubting questions. Milo is articulate, in my view brilliant. Our society needs him so much now in this period of complete critical thinking abyss.

Except Maher wasn't trying to dismantle him. He was trying to display Milo for the audience. All he needed to do was make it clear he didn't agree with everything Milo was saying, and he made it clear about the things he did agree with. Maher made every point he wanted to, and he got the last word. If this is your definition of him being dismantled, you probably do need to study this kind of thing more.
You've got a point Milo dominated the conversation, interrupted Bill's responses more often than not and still came off as charming and witty rather than as an asshole which could very easily have been the case.

Perhaps it's because Milo himself couches his "serious" comments within his "jokes" and vice versa, intermingling the two in every sentence. That way when someone calls him out on a fallacy or insult he can always cowardly retreat behind a shield of "I was only joking" or "I'm just a bitchy fag, I'm mean to everyone!" This isn't clever, it's not brave, and it's not deserving of praise of any kind. He's intellectually a coward that feeds his ego through the attention gained by getting a rise.
