  • The song Lady Amalthea sings which I really love.
    This clip is taken directly from the english version of the movie, I don't know who sings the other version of this song.

    There's a sort of lingering fragility to her voice as if it will break at any moment. Or that maybe she, herself, will crumble. I feel like that tremulous quality is what sums up the vulnerable state she's portraying in this scene. So I actually like that the singing doesn't sound "polished". She's had both her innocence and sense of identity snatched away from her in one fell swoop. It only makes sense that these emotions would show in her song. The imperfections that come with being human...

      its more artistic and realistic which imo makes it more beautiful than the "perfectly sung" version by katie. In this version i feel Amalthea's feelings of loss of innocence, confusion, and pain because she knows that even if she goes back to being a unicorn the feelings she felt as a human cannot be unlearned

    There are talented singers who do their own versions of this song... but this original version is just the best. The less than perfect voice of Mia just adds to the genuineness and innocence of the character.

    I remember being a little girl watching this movie.... Now I'm 28 and yesterday I watched this with my little daughter and I couldn't stop crying. She came up to me and said, "Don't cry mom. Everything's going to be ok..." I was feeling the nostalgia of being small and not quite understanding the deeper meanings of this movie but now that I'm a mother it hits me differently.. In my personal opinion, the song for me represents a child (purity and innocence like that of a unicorn) and the transition into teen and then to a woman. Children and unicorns share the commonality in the fact that they are the epitome of innocence; very symbolic. We are merely here for a blip in time and being able to share this sentimental movie that is close to my heart with my daughter made me so emotional.

    i think i like her singing voice because the song isnt really meant to be well sung. Shes gone from being an immortal unicorn to turning into a human which in that eera would have had the life span of 40 years she is in pain and u can really feel that in the shakyness of her voice almost as if she is about to cry but holding back the tears because crying will just make her more human

    • @NoMereMage
      @NoMereMage Před 9 lety +54

      it is well sung, it just sounds more emotional and sad. The other version sounds too perfect to me, like it was computer edited or something, there isn't the same feeling behind it. It's good, but I prefer the original. The original, with Mia Farrow singing, also sounds more like something in the book, whereas the updated version, sounds kinda emotionless to have come from the book, to me.

    The reason I like this version more is because it comes across as a more real, emotional version as opposed to some silly "perfect" rendition of it. Sure, a pretty voice and great vocal technique is nice, but I appreciate this version more simply because it is just so much more real and beautiful to me. It's special in that way that the newer version does not have.

    Mia Farrow's voice was perfect for this not because her voice was perfection but because it was imperfect which suits the state the character is in. As a unicorn purity and perfection are apart of the myth and lore but as humans we are imperfect, full of flaws and fragile which is what Mia Farrow brought to this side of the unicorn's character as a woman.

    I watched this movie around 12-14 years of age. As a femal, around that age is generally challenging no matter how your life is or was. I didn’t know a thing about the movie, and I’m so glad I didn’t, and that the movie came to me around that point of time is a blessing in disguise.
    The movie was gorgeous to watch, and so refreshing compared to the movies of even today. It questioned the playing field of fantasy films, the roles of the characters within them, and when she transformed into a woman I gasped in surprise, because I honestly didn’t expect that, and that feeling alone made me fall in love. How wonderful a movie is, when it surprises you in the best way possible?
    It helped me accept so much about the workings of life. This song was my anthem for the following years and now, turning twenty, it has become my creed once again.

It wasn't just she was beginning to forget herself, she began to like having more ranged emotions than supressed like that of an immortal being.. She also found herself, as a human wanting a companion. Molly and Schmendric weren't quite her friends, they were just tag alongs to her until she was human and back again to a unicorn.

      Here's a fun fact, Topcraft studio of Japan also did Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and this was a studio that later became Ghibli. So this is an early Ghibli movie sort of speak.

    You have idiotic people in this comment section saying how Mia is bad as singing or just completely missing the point of the song cause that’s how clueless newer generations can be...
    Not all songs that are amazing are created with some shitty auto tune or something, this works because Amalthea is dealing with a crisis and the unevenness in some parts of the song work really well as if she might cry at any moment. She was an immortal unicorn changed to a girl in order to be saved but now she is having emotions and thoughts she never had as a unicorn. This song is also about one going through rough times, after all, Amalthea was the last of her kind till the end of the movie so she would feel alone and scared.

    Man, I love this song... And I agree; her wavering and conflicted voice suits the mood PERFECTLY. It almost makes it more authentic and believable. But then again, I guess you'd have to have grown up with the movie and remember the context and emotions that go along with the scene in order to appreciate it.
    Regardless; I will ALWAYS love this movie. So well done and such a good soundtrack.

  • @Icecreamandradness
    @Icecreamandradness Před 6 lety +57

    Sure, the literal meaning of this song is the innocence lost when an immortal creature who is a manifestation of purity becomes a flawed and fractured human.
    But the themes of loss and innocence are the foundation of the novel, and the movie. You see that clearly in Mollie’s speech. There’s plenty of reason to interpret it as someone making the transition into the pain and wonder of womanhood, whether it’s a cis girl growing up or a trans woman taking the steps to become her true self.
    Growth always comes with pain, but it’s within that pain that we discover change. A caterpillar inside a cocoon has to disintegrate before it can become a butterfly.
