I agree with Leah Isaac on this one! The innocence of a unicorn can resemble the innocence of child. As a child the world seems so much easier. But after growing up, things get heavy and are so much more complicated. Childhood by then is a memory, a place we can never go again. Therefore this nostalgic song really fits the loss of all that time. Just like a unicorn ripped out of its world.

This song is so beautiful. I never realized until now that I'm older that this song could also very well be interpreted as a song about a girl growing into a woman.
And the singing is so absolutely gorgeous.
Not gonna lie after not hearing this since I was a kid as an adult made me cry.

Yes, the movie is really just a masterwork in storytelling to evoke transitional feelings. Like Labyrinth is a 'coming-of-age' story, this movie is a 'coming of age' artwork. Helping the viewer to explore the rough and terrifying destruction of innocence; the sadness and weariness often experienced as circumstance forces us, sometimes violently, into adulthood. It shows, in skilled display of color, art, and sound, how we begin to trade energizing joy for comprehending knowledge, protective naivete for jaded wisdom, and youthful vitality for purposeful agency. It teaches the young that with these new tools at our disposal, it's true that we are much better equipped to engage with our biological imperative, but all too often the cost is great; too great, many feel, and the movie prepares us for that, too.
Every aspect of The Last Unicorn addresses all of this, both alone, and in harmony with the other aspects, providing an enriched and enhanced telling that surpasses most movies in nearly every way.
It's an elaborate, insightful, artistic project that really transcends time, planting its flag in soil so ancient and archetypical that it should definitely be on every list of classic movies, and included in every hall of fame.
The movie's imagery, music, colors, tones, and actual lines of dialogue (not to mention performances by actors that can easily be imagined as channeling some primordial truths) all work in harmony to evoke something very real. Watching this movie as a child evokes feelings within you that you cannot comprehend, until you revisit the movie as an adult. Only then do you realize that you really were made to feel genuine adult feelings way back then. That was a real feeling, but it passed down all the roads long ago, and you were allowed to forget.
Also yes, we all cry; some with eyes, some with heart, and others with body, but no one escapes the stark realization that the bittersweet feels we got from The Last Unicorn are now just our ever-present baseline emotional state. Even I didn't go unscathed, and I had the rare fortune to steal into adulthood still clutching joy, naivete, and vitality! So, feel not alone, Leah. You aren't.

@@40_Year_Gamemaster Thank you for the well thought out reply, it reminded me to revisit this song again and I'm glad I did. A lot of what you've said is exactly how i interpret this movie and puts it into words that I wasn't able to think of myself. Every second of this movie is absolutely a beautiful peice of artwork. I hope one day if I have kids they can see this movie too and learn the same lessons as I did from it, it helped me as a child and as an adult in so many ways. Everytime I listen to this song I gain new meaning from it.

    Once, I can't remember
I was long ago someone strange
    I was innocent and wise
    And full of pain
    Now that I'm a woman
    Everything is strange
    Once, when I was searching
    Somewhere out of reach
    Far away
In a place I could not fine
    Or heart obey
    Now that I'm a woman
    Everything has changed
    Everything has changed
    Everything has changed

    • @40_Year_Gamemaster
      @40_Year_Gamemaster Před 3 měsíci

I take real issue with the lyrics "Or heart obey." [Also, I'm fairly sure that the last word, fourth line, second verse is 'find,' not 'fine.']
The phrase "Or heart obey" just doesn't make sense, in terms of continuity or rational thought. Many songs go off the rails like that, but not this one.
So, based on the word-flow and general message that is being voiced, the last line of that verse should be describing what she searched for. I think that OR is FOR, but I'm wracked trying to figure out what HEART OBEY might be. I could just sing For rather than Or, and that will satisfy most listeners, but it still doesn't vibe right.
Maybe I'm wrong, and she never explains what she was searching for and she's saying she searched in a place she couldn't find or "heartobey" which may be some word or words that are an alternative way to "find" something, like 'perceive'...or an alternative location from a "place I could not find" like uhm...??? Ah well, I'm tapped out. It's just going to have to annoy me, ad infinitum.
Sorry to necro a 3-year-old comment, but this seemed to be the right place to issue that general frumpiness of mine.

I agree 100%. I do like this version, its still very pretty. But Mia Farrow's performance has a vulnerability to it that really fits the character of the Unicorn and what she's going through at that time. I'm happy they used her version instead of this one!

The fact that Mia’s performance wasn’t perfect adds so much to the vulnerability of the song. I love every inch of her version, as it reflects the fear and confusion that the unicorn must have been feeling and brings us right there with her.

It's so interesting how this movie has had a different influence on everyone. I think I was 5 or 6 when I watched it for the first time. The love story didn't really get to me back then, instead I wanted to become a unicorn myself. Somehow I could never forget the scene when she was turned into a human and said, "I can feel this body dying all around me!" In German though, the translation of that line sounded more poetical.
