    While not that relevant for day to day driving we thought it would be cool to do it just out of interest, plus it was a great day for a drive…..although using air con would have been better!
    To achieve the best possible range, we took as much weight out of the electric car as possible and chose a warm 30-34 degree day with slight breezes and as flat as possible route.
    Travelling south from Brisbane to Byron Bay in NSW and returning to Brisbane we drove at a maximum of 90km/h and didn’t use any air conditioning or other accessories, besides the radio in the infotainment system.
    Total distance achieved on a full charge was 303 klms with an average consumption over the test of 12.9kWh per 100klms and average speed of 63km/h. Total energy consumed to recharge the battery after the trip was 50kWh and we provide some commentary on what makes this figure up given the MG ZS EV battery capacity is only 44.5kWh.
    We’ve included some commentary and screen shots of the various dash and charger stats over the day and a sneak peek of the stunning day it was on the Gold Coast with a shot of Palm Beach.
    As always we encourage everyone’s input and comments to each of our videos, of which we reply to as many as we can. We continue to develop our new 1 on 1 consultation service, Electric Car & Vehicle Advice Australia (check it out on Facebook), for people wanting more detailed in-depth information on electric cars which and EV’s.
    As mentioned previously, the EV consultation service has a modest cost to it however our Customers are telling us it’s great value for money and really helped in their EV buying decisions.

    It would be interesting to do the exact same trip again doing everything normally. So AC on, full “daily” load, normal acceleration, cruising at the speed limit, etc. just to see how the “real world” consumption compares to this test.

  • @johnshares
    @johnshares Před 3 lety +3

    Well that was so interesting on many levels. I’m in Perth now, having spent 10 years in Brisbane back in the 70,s and we have temps up to 39 in summer, so the glass roof just got crossed out, mind you I’ve only seen one Mg Zs Ev here so far at the annual ev gathering. General stock is yet to arrive.
    I’ll be saving this and replaying again to get up to speed with all the jargon, before the trip to the “dealer”. Thanks for all the effort you took to make this Utube. Cheers John

      The glass roof is standard in the Aust model ZS EV so you cant opt out of it unfortunately. Next summer I am thinking of getting a lightweight reflective foil windscreen shade and cutting to fit and placing that between the fabric shade and glass roof to see what difference that makes.

    I usually get about 13.5 kwh/100km on normal mode and aircon on all the time.
    I accelerate at the same rate as the petrol cars but will try to regen as much as possible when I stop. Only use the brakes for that last few meters. The average speed is around 40kph (normal city driving)
    I also found that sport mode does not use more energy if you accelerate at the same rate. It seems the only difference between E,N and S is throttle mapping.
    As for the battery coolant being cold, it uses the aircon to cool down the battery. The heat exchanger is under the charger.

We now have the MG ZS EV for 6 months and our rate is on average for 3600 km 23,4kWh/100kms. Compared to your car in the hot summer .. horrible. We had a lot of cold days and using the car in N and Regen standard with every day using the perfect heater. I'm looking forward to an MG update giving the choice to reset consumpution to kms per kilowatt. As in the sixties was normal in Europe, btw, I'm 73 now and a lot of experience with cars as hobby. Nice video, on full range journey's where I will be travelling at set cruising speeds I would always choose the lowest regen possible, not Kers3, for me it always results in a higher miles Per kWh figure .
    The Hyundai/Kia EV's do well as they have regen paddles that give you 0% regen (coast mode) .
    You can also 'mimic' 'coast mode' on the ZS by engaging the ACC then dropping the set ACC speed down but maintaining a higher speed than set .

    Good effort! 11.6kWh/100km is a really good effort. I am particularly interested in the dashboard cover you have fitted -- is that a commercial product, or do you have access to sewing talent? I find when driving into afternoon sun, all I can see is a reflection of the dashboard! Also had to get sheepskin seat covers as MG seats got red-hot if parked in the sun.
    The granny charger off our solar system is enough for everyday travel, with a 50kW charger 3km away if we need a boost in a hurry. MG in NZ gave to early adopters $500 worth of credit with ChargeNet, who have good coverage of the "Shakey Isles"

      @@ElectricCarAustralia thanks for that. Have you heard anything about the battery not holding charge etc in the future? I might be way off but similar to how a phone or any rechargeable battery it doesn’t last as long as when you first bought it. For example….263km range, will that slowly be less and less as the battery deteriorates over the years? Any warranty to cover that side of things?

    • @ElectricCarAustralia
      @ElectricCarAustralia  Před 3 lety

      Hi Wade, yes the batteries will degrade over time and manufacturer warranties do cover a certain percentage of degradation. For example a battery might be warranted to 85% of original capacity at the end of 8 years normal use. What's normal could be debated and all warranties will of course have some sort of conditions. There is limited information available on specific vehicle/brand degradation as it depends a lot on how the battery is treated. As with petrol/diesel engine/gearbox etc. there is no specific info available on the durability decline of these. It is also an individual thing as to how much loss of range you would tolerate before you looked for a battery replacement. If you look after a battery and live in an 'average' climate my gut feel is you should get 12-15 years or 300k-400k out of a battery before the range reduction might become an issue. Again lot's of variables around this but based on what I have read on R&D testing, current liquid cooled battery management technologies and real world feedback from early model Tesla's this sounds reasonable. Cheers

    Sad news, the Victoria Govt, and I assume other states, are introducing Alternate Fuel Source Taxes on EVs and PHEVs where you will have to show your odometer at the start and end of each year, plus a pic of your speedo and number plate. We will be charged 2.5 cents per km for EVs and 2.0 cents for PHEVs . If you travel interstate or go on a dirt road, you will have to prove it with "documentation". If you do, say 20,000 kms in a year, this will add $495 to on top of your registration. I can tell you how I know in private DMs, but I suggest people start complaining to their local ministers now. This is the replace the fuel excise they get from the Federal Govt at 43 cents per litre. I argued with them today that it was too high and that if they must bring it in, something like a 1/4 of this amount, would be more reasonable.

  • @sectokia1909
    @sectokia1909 Před 3 lety

    Down the road, I wonder what the tax on EV's will be when they take over the road more. Norway have equivalent of about $1.50AUD/day, victoria just brough in 2.5c/km. That would add about 50% to the cost of the EV trip. I think we can only rely on their being no tax for maybe the next 5 years or so? Trying to get this to stack up financially is hard. By my math it would take well over 200,000km for you to break even in cost compared to a MG ZS non EV, and if there is a ever a EV tax that would blow out to well over 300,000km. Hard to justify. Savings on services (which seems to me to really be only oil change, oil filter, and timing belt) is almost negligible really.
