I have no idea how you managed to live the past 10 years without hearing this song before.
This song was one of those global phenomenon's. It was EVERYWHERE. Even being a non-listener of the radio I still couldn't get away from it.
All of these "reactors" clearly fake reactions for views. It's so dumb
I've never heard or heard of the song or the group; so it's doable.
@@inncubus666 ok, let's say that he actually didn't hear this song. It's highly unlikely that he hasn't heard either a lot of the songs that he has reacted to, such as Queen, Eminem among other ultra famous groups
@@sebaynovuelve It does seem unlikely I agree. On the other hand I'm often shocked by my friends lack of knowledge of music I thought was unescapably ubiquitous; so I wouldn't be prepared to call any individual a liar over it. Then again most people lie sometimes if it either seems unimportant or to their benefit so....
I don't think a discussion of a song needs to be a first hearing necessarily anyway so when people lie about it it seems silly to me at best.
they won a grammy for this song, they were completely stunned when Prince came out to present them with the award saying he loved this song..highest complement ever
there a clip somwhere?
Milestone in their lives for sure.
@@dimmer9378 itâs on CZcams. Search Gotye wins Grammy
I would prolly piss me self
I didn't know that, but i'm not surprised.
I love how the first verses make it sound like she was the toxic one, and then Kimbra's part comes in and forces you to reevaluate everything he said in the first half of the song. Considering she only had 6 or 7 lines of lyrics, I find it really powerful.
It takes 2 to tango
The whole "two sides to every story"... it speaks to their lack of communication with each other too.
nice copy paste from vice or whatever video it was that covered this song. get ur own opinion
@@ciircuz What are you talking about, is it a literal copy and paste of another comment of another person on another video, or do you think the observation, that the song has a theme about different views changing the picture, is so outstanding that only one person could realistically have it and everybody else is stealing?
@@Kaefer1973 No its literally a copy paste. Slighlty altered, yet, nearly word for word what the narrator said in the video lol. Fuck off?
MrLBoyd: âLet me know if I should be listening to more of their musicâ
Me: âWell⊠about thatâŠâ
Now they are just somebody we use to know
Well, I LOVE Smoke and mirrors, and some other of his songs too
Heâs won multiple Grammys before that songâŠ
@@kazekenjii Grammys? doubt that
@@kichi6346 youâre right, other awards but not Grammys. ARIA i think
"This is a masterpiece" = Yes.
Such a simple song, but it packs a punch.
Yeah, it got way over-played...
But it still chokes me up, every time.
One of the most honest breakup songs, with all the complexity of emotion one goes through...
Great reaction. You get it. đ
Its potent song. I missed it from years and when I heard it was shocked.
absolutely. It wasn't even a song through a few of my worst breakups, but brings back heartache as I listen now.
The music video is even better.
I normally hate it when reactors listen to a live performance first, but damn with this one it didn't matter at all because they sounded exactly like the album version. Super impressed!
Nah didn't sound like the studio version, vocals at least. But his raw voice in this version was way better in my opinion rather than the layered chorus
Unfortunately he does this with every music reaction, so it ruins lots of songs
@@TheToaster1155 I think itâs due to copy right issues, if youâre referring to him reacting to live as posed to the studio recordings
nah the live version of this song is better then the studio
It's one of the great breakup songs out there, especially with both points of view.
Yeah great idea to have both sides
This reaction is the reason I'm addicted to reaction videos. It was like art watching you genuinely process the song/lyrics real time. Beautifully done.
I love that this song gives both sides of the story. A very accurate depiction of a break up in that it's not just 1 persons fault. I also love how well they harmonise. It gives the feel that they know each other very intimately, even if the relationship is ending
You really got it!
I loved the moment when Kimbras voice and perspective hit you and you were like âthis is a masterpieceâ with this little headshaking vibing to it đ
If you watch the real music video, you get more of an impression that they are singing at each other. It's beautiful
agree that he should watch that video.
Kimbra - female singer is Kimbra. Definitely worth looking into her solo work!
Highly recommend Kimbra on her own. Settle Down is a good one.
Come Into My Head is also a banger.
I love Top of The World!
1000% this. She has one of thr most underrated voices in the last decade.
I recommend any of her sing sing studio videos
"Hearts A Mess" and "Eyes Wide Open" are also goods one by Gotye
Eyes Wide Open was my favorite on this album.
Heart's a mess is awesome. I'm a 90s grunge and heavy music super fan but that song kicks ass
@@el-violador Heart's a mess is a ride, for sure.
if you like hearts a mess listen to Katie Noonan's cover of it. utterly sublime!
I agree with both song choices. Love the State of the Art song myself. It's my jam đ„
Love how your expressions kept changing as the song intensified. The best part about us that know this song is what you were saying and we knew what was coming.
Gotye is so talented, though this is his most commercially successful song he has so many great songs that were huge in Australia but didn't take off overseas. Hearts a Mess is my favourite of his. This song though is genius and he and Kimbra do it perfectly. So deserving of the Grammy!
This is the kind of song you appreciate more and more the more you hear it. âșïžđ
When he hits the high notes it sends chills down my spine.
The spontaneity of your reactions and expressions are high spots of your react videos, they remind us on how we felt when we were listening those songs for the first time.
Congrats for your great react work.
We need more of this genre in our lives. I love the mellow then to the peak you just want to scream with them.
To be honest he sounds better in the studio version
To be honest, he sounds better in the âWalk off the Earthâ cover version.
Studio version definitely - the visual is brilliant!
Quite a few of these reactions where the live versions don't do it justice imo, esp when the videos are so striking
I'm confused at why he's picking live versions of songs where often they don't do even close to justice for the original studio version.
@@BooneDavey Heâs paranoid about copyrights.
The female singer is Kimbra. Sheâs got some good stuff too. I like Settle Down a lot.
Gotten is much better music
Musician kimbra a talented singer
Gotye*
I got to see her perform in Chicago a couple years ago. It was so intimate you could practically reach out and touch her.
She is amazing actually. Gotye......meh. Not my thing but her voice is special. Super creative too.
Kimbra is amazing
Wally is a bonafide genius and that whole album Making Mirrors is a masterpiece.
I only wish I didn't feel like I will grow old before we get another Gotye album đđ
What I love about this song is that at the beginning it's very unassuming and the BAM! it creeps up on you.
I adore this song, and clicked immediately to see your reaction! Your thought processes are always so emotionally fluent and detailed, thank you MrL!
"Hearts a mess" is also really good, and there is a cover of one of his other songs called "The only way" by another Aussie band called Karnivool that is well worth a watch.
Be right back, making a bunch of accounts to upvote this comment more. Karnivool is my all time favourite band.
@@beavschannel5217 They're pretty amazing, I was going to suggest Roquefort with empire horns as well, but thought I'd better stick to the Gotye theme for now.
Gotye - Hearts a mess, is a masterpiece. My favourite of his. đ
This has got to be one of my favorite songs. I love how it starts out with you feeling bad for the male singer and then the woman "he used to know" comes in hard and strong to correct the record. Kimbra made this song!
I feel like their song, "Hearts a Mess" is drastically underrated. It was used in The Great Gatsby and that's how I found out about it personally
Gotye, an Australian, and Kimbra, a New Zealander, have also done an arthouse type of video of this song. Without giving away too much, it involves paint and is quite surprising. Gotye took this song, which I think he wrote, to the the Eurovision Contest and won! Please check out the other video and you will enjoy it.
I donât believe he ever went to Eurovision. They entered the song in the OWN Eurovision contest which is a CZcams competition for songs and he didnât win either. They came 9th. But like I said, it isnât the real Eurovision anyway.
Yes. The way they come together and then become separate. It was a great video in it's simplicity. Love the song, still.
They came first in the triple J hottest 100 in 2012 (so songs from 2011). Which considering it's open public voting rather than expert panel... well I'll let you judge but there were 1.4million votes cast.
I hated this song when it first came out, but then I went through something similar and now it hits hard. Love it!
Same..
Why would you hate it? This song was an absolute banger.
We were young and didn't get the message back then maybe and now we understand it's just banger
@@jay-jamainfarsen6853 exactly
I was the same. Well, kinda. I'd already been through some rough breakups by then, but it took me a while not to hear baa baa black sheep and instead appreciate the song for what it is.
I love when you said "his voice is... ok" before chorus came ^^
I work in the trades, and there's usually a radio on in the background. I find most "pop" music bland and mildly irritating at best. Yet every once in a while a new song comes on that makes me tilt my head to one side like a dog. When this first started to get air time, I loved it's quirky - almost playful - musical nature contrasted with the darker, yet still kind of fun lyrics. Sending a friend over to collect records is such a wonderful inclusion, and very relatable. No complaints!
You know how a song can transport you right back somewhere????? Yep this was my ring tone for 6 months while I was separeted back in 2012. He's now someone I wish I never knew but that aside, I i still love this song. And yes it'll be in your head all day. Lol. I always enjoy your reactions. âźâŻïž
I went like 8 years without hearing this song then this exact performance popped up on YT and I am obsessed now lol you picked the best performance of the song to react to also
I legitimately want to be his best friend. His reaction videos are the best in the business. I loved when he said this song was a masterpiece. Delivery is outstanding.
That xylophone just makes the song. This song brings me back to a place and time.
Another song that came out at the same time, Royals by Lorde was a great song (it really surprised me the first time I listened with a subwoofer).
My English teacher had us analyze this song when I was in high school. I sucked at writing but she was a great teacher and really helped me.
The fact that they're talking to each other comes across more easily in the original video where they illustrate it very well.
The female singer's name is Kimbra, she's from New Zealand. I highly recommend you listen to some of her songs. "Come into my head", "Plain Gold Ring" and "Settle Down" are three of my favorites. I recommend her live versions of her songs because she's a loop artist (she's been looping before it became popular) and she records all of the individual sound layers of her songs live before putting them together and singing the melody over all of the vocal loops.
I heard that song quite often in the past I think, kinda like it. This is the first time I hear that song "live" though. Gave me chills.
âState of the Artâ - Gotye is another amazing piece :)
This is a similar concept to Fleetwood Mac's "Go your own way" where its a duet but its a couple in conflict, they are singing together but also singing at each other
Gotye and Kimbra...classic!
There's an isolated vocal version of this that's just awesome.
INCREDIBLE SONG!
Excellent reaction. The video really does a great job of telling the story
This song will stick in your head for years to come, its sooo addictive
The happiness in your face watching this to the end is tangible. I love this song almost as much as the meme that came from it; depicting the Queen, painted like this single, with the caption "Now you're just a country that I used to own."
Why does this song always bring me tears!! Such a beautiful harmony
This was one of my favorite songs ever, 1.7Billion views on FB its amazing
A masterpiece; absolutely.
Yes, you will have that EARWORM of this tune in your head for days now lol
You can see him experience the emotions in his eyes, great music will do that
Stunning arrangement
All day? It's been 10 years and it still, for no good reason, jumps into my mind. Just driving to work like NOW YOU'RE JUST SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOWW ^somebodieeeee
Kimbra is an amazing vocalist I would suggest "Come into My Head" or her cover of Nina Simone's "Plain Gold Ring". Gotye's 2 albums are amazing. "Hearts a Mess", "Eyes Wide Open" and "Bronte" are all really good.
Why do I love watching reaction videos to songs I already love? Like I enjoyed watching them fall in love with it too
I love you reactions bro. âOh, they know exactly what theyâre doingâ I laughed out loud.
I love how the people reacts to this song. Greetings from Mexico bro!!!
My man, this is the first video Iâve seen of yours. First thing I thought was, damn this manâs voice needs to be on the radio
That little smile when he said âbut you treat me like a stranger and it feels so roughâŠâ yeah thatâs a heavy line and feeling.
Absolutely love this song, love kimbra from New Zealand, represent, im always left wanting more the song its so good
Man respect to this brother,
loved his Rage against the machine videos and highly knowledgeable about the topics in the songs. Thank you my brother for being educated and educating us on info we don't know. #RESPECT
You should check out "Walk of the earth's" version of this. Its 5 ppl playing the same guitar and they kill it. Very musically brilliant
And that version led me to Pentatonix's version, so this song led me to having two new bands to listen to. For that, it holds a high place in my heart, particularly because the video was also very well done.
This has always been one of my favorite songs. I really enjoyed your comments on this. I now follow your channel and look forward to future songs!
You are so much fun MrLboyd, I can't wait to experience your reactions and learn what I am really seeing and hearing. It's like having an enjoyable snack in the midst of a day.
I love that song so much that also enjoy to see strangers react on it!
Definitely a timeless masterpiece.
An Aussie pop radio playlist staple for way to long. I have heard this so many, many, many times but since it has been off heavy roation for so long I now appreciate it more, can't deny the talent.
The last Aussie pop that was as overplayed in USA was Kylie's "Can't Get You Outta My Head".
This is an incredible song. Lives in my head rent free.
Suggesting Kimbraâs other music - Sing Song Studio, Plain Gold Ring. Kimbra is criminally underplayed.
Plain Gold Ring is a great song....nice recommendation.
Her uptempo stuff is unfuckingbelievable. Miracle, Cameo Lover, Come Into My Head. I could listen to Warrior on repeat for hours and never get bored of it.
This was going to be my comment almost exactly. Please check out Kimbra's Plain Gold Ring. I would love to see what you think about that.
When he says âthis is a masterpiece.â Pretty funny
Still goosebumps although so many years have passed! Glad you pulled this one up again! Thx Sir
I Love how everyone takes his side at first cause you only hear his side, then she comes in and the full picture is painted. shows how one sides breakup songs can be.
I've never heard this version before. Gave me chills after the bumpy opening.
when he starts the hook dude goose bumps always
He is a multi award winning performer. Love his song hearts a mess.
From Puerto Ricođ”đ·this song is something else. I time hit wonder wat ever they saay.. But is đ„ fornthe đ
Masterpiece is spot on
Wally (Gotye) is one of the nicest people I've ever met. I remember seeing his first band, Downstares, win a battle of the bands when he was in high school. I wasn't surprised at all when he won a Grammy.
So cool to see you go from âitâs okâ to âman he can singâ to âthis song is a masterpieceâ.
Most of us have experienced that Mike Tyson gutpunch of a breakup- whether toxic, star-crossed, or simply immature.
Their voices cut straight to the soul, and bring back that heart-longing, even if it's been decades.
Haunting.
You are right this is a masterpiece one of those songs that stays with you
Your reaction, and actions are the masterpiece. Thank you for your honest review of this great song.... And I've seen many reactions on this one
In 2013 I almost couldnât go anywhere and not hear this.
The turn is so good. Perfect reaction. Loved it.
They're not singing to each other.
She is singing to him, but he is singing to somebody else. Without the video, you have the line "and I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know."
The video drives this home with Kimbra's alternating loud & soft harmonies being represented as fluctuating desperation & frustration as she tries to get his attention, until she finally gives up, gets painted out of his world, and then the cycle starts over with her being the new somebody that he used to know.
The song and video in its entirety truly is a masterpiece.
You've learned me something new today sir. I never noticed that until you opened that up for me.
@@sandracox4341 I agree. They have different perspectives on their relationship.
Such a great song.
Girl is Kimbra. She is amazing. Check out her live recording at Sing Sing Studio of Plain Gold Ring.
I love this song. It brings me great joy to watch someone hear it for the first time. Thank you Sir.
Wish I could be you and have the first time I listened to this song again. Almost as close to perfect as music can get. Knew you would appreciate the music beauty...thats why you are one of the best!
I have no idea how to say it, but Iâve always said âgoat-yuhâ. I think this song is pleasant, but the video was the coolest part.
It's "Go-t-a"
@@BrokenGodEnt good to know!
For gamers, Gotye is Game of the Year Edition
Go- tee- ay , like Gauthier
In your own time you should check out the cover of this song by Walk Off the Earth where they all play one guitar. It's my favorite version of the song.
Yeah, totally agree with you, it's a brilliant cover
Walk Off the Earth deserves some attention. They are so original, so fun-loving, so excellent... and this is one of their best covers. (czcams.com/video/d9NF2edxy-M/video.html). For a bit of fun, all five of the group members are playing one guitar. It has over 191 million views! Their cover of Hello is possibly the most inventive video I've ever seen in terms of alternative instruments (czcams.com/video/LT7MOirwZdM/video.html), but I love Speeches (czcams.com/video/cUAsGr6KM2E/video.html) which has a unique story-telling process. These people are genius!
It was delightful to take that journey with you. The official video of the studio cut is worth watching.
This song is incredible! Gotye should be known for more than just this!
Also check out Kimbra! She's one of the best to ever do it in the pop genre!
Body painting video puts this over the top! I think this goes back to the 80s.
Great reaction!! Hugs from Brazil!!
Kimbra....those vocals..plain gold ring..her new stuff..
Well, after Walk off the Earth, I have known about Gotye. Now it is my favorite music, wich I like to listen very often...
Eyes Wide Open by Gotye is also a super important listen
