  • The BEST Alternative to Leica M Cameras | Canon P Review
    Today I'm going to be giving you my review of the best alternative to Leica M cameras. The Canon P. I've been shooting with the Canon P for about a year and a half now and I have to say it is one of the most well-built and well-designed cameras I've ever used. I have taken this camera all over the United States with me and its durability is absolutely tank like. The Canon P is a much more affordable rangefinder than its Leica, Zeiss Contax, or even Nikon counterparts. If you are looking for a 35mm rangefinder camera and you can live with LTM lenses instead of Leica M Mount lenses, then the Canon P is probably your best option! I hope you found my review of the Canon P useful and entertaining. Make sure to SUBSCRIBE for future videos! Bye now :)

      If Leica M mount is a must, then Minolta/Leica CL.
      Or if any rangefinder system is OK, probably a Leica IIIF, or Canon IV SB2. They are affordable, won't cost a kidney, but unfortunately being screw mount rangefinders, not many modern lenses are made for them.

      I have a Canon Vt De Luxe and it's wonderful. I love the feel in the hand, the frame lines for 35/50/135, and the unique bottom winder.
      That said, I like my Voigtlander Bessa R even more. It's a LTM (L39) rangefinder with bright viewfinder, clear frame lines, max. shutter speed of 1/2000th, and a reasonably good built-in meter. Build quality lacks compared to any Leica or Canon rangefinder, but if handled with care it is a fabulous performer. I use mine mostly with various 50mm lenses like the Nokton 50/1.5 aspherical (Gen 1) and Jupiter 8.

    Great video. The Nikon F was not infamous, it was famous. Famous means "widely known," while infamous means "having a reputation of the worst kind."

    I have both Canon P and Leica M2 - while functionally identical (nearly), the Leica is definitely superior in build quality, though not that much. The Canon is beautiful and I love using it as an alternative to the M2. Given the insane prices for Leica's these days the Canon is definitely worth getting.

    Oh, nice review of the P! I've looked into buying one some time ago because it's definitely one of the best Leica M alternatives. The cool thing is that voigtländer has a huge collection of screw mount lenses. One problem I had was the 1.0 mag of the viewfinder I can barely see the 35mm frame lines even in a 0.85 mag viewfinder. After using the M6 for a while the quick loading system is much faster even with the flappy flap and the bottom removal. 😆 Also getting 38,5 frames is a nice bonus. I would really like to try out a Canon P because I heard so many good things about it. 👍

One thing-on my M4 and newer Leicas I don’t swing the back open-I drop my pre-tensed cartridge in while sticking the extended tongue inside the take-up spool, push the cartridge down hard then close it up. Well-done. "Best" alternative to Leica M? I have a few options:
    1) Yashica Electro 35 GS, GT, GSN or GTN. Some people scrape together their money to buy a Leica M body, then can't afford Leica glass. Then, when they do get a Leica lens, they can't afford another. Then why bother with an interchangeable lens rangefinder? Get a nice fixed lens one like a Yashica. They're all over the place for under $100. Budget another $150 for a CLA and you're good to go for $250 with a nice fast 45 mm lens. Aperture priority AE makes it almost as fast to shoot with as a P&S, and the shutter is so smooth and quiet, it makes a Leica shutter sound agricultural, by comparison.
    2) Leica IIIc or IIIf. Here, you have that heavy, precision Leica build, but without the four-figure price tag. A good body is ~$450, a Leitz Elmar 50/3.5 is another $450. Add a 35 and 90 at some point in the future, Leitz or Canon or even Soviet. I stretched and bought my IIIc body + Summitar 50/2. I really prefer 35 mm for an all-around prime, and "settled" for a Canon 35/2.8 until I can one day (or maybe not?) get a Leitz 35/3.5 Summaron. I may replace the 50/2 Summitar with a 50/3.5 Elmar, for its softer rendering. The Summitar images look like those from a modern lens, after minor post-processing.
    3) Olympus OM1N (manual, mechanical) or OM2N (M or A, electronic) - The designer of these used Leica M as his inspiration. He wanted that same build and optical quality, as well as shutter smoothness, but with the lighter weight and smaller size AND the SLR advantages. Zuiko lenses are as good as Leitz and cost a lot less. The slower Zuiko lenses are VERY affordable, and optically excellent, even wide open. A 3 lens kit with 50/1.8, 28/3.5 and 135/3.5 is quite affordable. Cheap back-up bodies in the form of OMGs or OM10s are widely available and under-appreciated. It's nice to have two bodies with two different lenses and films. For the ~$1k I spent on my Leica IIIc kit, I could have had a HANDSOME OM kit that is even more versatile. It's just that it's not made by a German mountain elf.

    You are the first reviewer to comment on my biggest gripe with Canon P (I have a Canon V-L and its the same) and that is the stupid lug placement.
    My old Leica III is no where near as nice to shoot, but it's absolutely comfortable to carry around on a strap unlike the Canon (I've owned modern digital Leica M's and they are comfy too). I love the mechanics and and handling of the Canons. I wish there was a fix for carrying them on a cross body strap.
    Also, the Canon P in particular is dead simple to maintain.

    • @garvinkelly
      @garvinkelly Před 5 měsíci

      it's so annoying. My theory for the canon 7 is that the lugs are designed to work with the 50mm f0.95 lens. It's huge and heavy. With my small voigtlander 35mm f2.5, it always hangs sideways and it drives me crazy. I am actually considering selling it to buy something I'll use more

    The successor Canon 7 models has less magnification in the viewfinder so when I wear glasses I can still see the 35mm frame lines perfectly fine. This is the main reason why I didn't get and Canon P and eventually I found a nice Canon 7sZ which is supposedly rare.

      Hi, the model 7 has perhaps the better viewfinder but the body is bigger and uncomfortable to hold, on the model 7 first version my finger always touches the rim of the meter window. I prefer the rare model VI-L (lever) or VI-T (trigger wind) or the series V models. All have the finder with three different magnifications. The earlier IV models have a small and dim finder. There its better to use the brighter auxiliary viwfinders for the cold shoe and only do the metering with the rangefinder window.

That being said, I did want to ask since it's what I've found so far: The black bodies I have seen online are repainted. Would there be any diminishing value for them being repainted? How would one know if the repainted camera was originally black?

    • @ReimannPembroke
      @ReimannPembroke  Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks for watching! I don’t really think repainting them diminishes the value, they aren’t worth all that much anyways and there are a lot of them that have been made. In terms of telling if you have an original black painted one, there aren’t many ways that you can tell. The original ones will have a little white dot painted on the self timer lever (however, that’s easy to copy with the repaint) also I believe there is some way you can tell by how the strap logs are painted but I don’t remember. I’m sure there’s something out there about that though

    Thank you for this interesting, thoughtful review. I agree that the Canon P is really a fantastic camera -- beautiful, beautifully designed and beautifully constructed -- with a great form factor and a big bright viewfinder. As you mentioned, the Canon LTM lenses for this camera are excellent, as well as beautifully constructed. Nikon also made LTM lenses which are also spectacular, in addition to fantastic lenses from other Japanese, Russian and German manufacturers. Indeed, apparently many photographers at the time actually preferred Nikon and Canon lenses to those offered by Leica. Canon rangefinders preceding the P are very similar to the P, except with selectable framelines, such as the VL and VT, and earlier models. Leica cameras and lenses are wonderful as well, of course, so I tend to just see the rangefinder offerings from Canon and Nikon as different, with their own strengths and weaknesses. Anyone using one of these cameras can be confident that even though they are excellent values, they are really uncompromised as far as the images they can produce.

    • @ReimannPembroke
      @ReimannPembroke  Před rokem

      I would add - if you want the sharpness of modern glass that M mount lenses provide, you should really consider Voigtlander lenses like the Color Skopar and the Nokton. Very sharp, very modern lens designs (35mm 2.5 Color Skopar is rumored to be the same optical design as the Summarit 35) on LTM. Matt Day did a comparison of the Color Skopar against the Leica Summarit and the results are very surprising for a $300 vs. $1500 lens.

    What drew you to the Canon P rather than the successor model, the Canon 7 and 7s? The 7 has multiple frame lines to select from, from 35mm to 135mm, and it comes with selenium meter, which my be perfectly functional. It's only slightly larger than the Canon P, doesn't weigh any more than the Canon P, and usually costs less than the Canon P.
