Here's a quick video on changing your coolant how I do it on my DRZ. Quick and simple. Intro Music: "Blood From a Stone" by Hounds of Hate Provided by freemusicarchives.org
Great tutorial! One thing I'd add is make sure it says silicate free and safe for aluminum radiators on the antifreeze. Silicates can destroy your water pump seals. Antifreeze from the dealer can be crazy expensive. It's more than fine to use automotive antifreeze, just gotta read the back though.
Definitely true. Most times when I buy it, I'll get the premixed stuff and its safe for aluminum and silicate free. But its always a good idea to read what you're buying.
Does water go automatically into the overflow tank when filling the radiator or do you have to fill the overflow to a certain point and if so how do you do it.
+KOOLITUS The overflow tank on these bikes actually dont have a fill point if I remember correctly. When the bike heats up, excess coolant goes in to the tank and when the bike starts to cool down, coolant is then sucked back up into the radiators due to the pressure difference.
If im switching over to engine ice dont you need to run distilled water through the radiator a couple times to get out the previous coolant to prevent sludge build up
Lmao why would it shoot out uncontrollably😂. How else would you open it to check and fill it. The only time it will do that is if you open it while the bike is hot like a dumb a**
I know this is an older post but can someone tell me how much coolant should be in the little tank behind the motor I have a new DRZ400s 2013 and it has about half a tank, should it be full or is half a tank ok?
That tank is just an overflow resevoir. Normally half full is just fine. As long as your radiator levels are in check, I wouldnt worry about the resevoir.
I though it was funny that It was not full because it was so low, lol. I thought the coolant level was low but it is always full when I open the top up, this makes since now. Thanks for the help. Boy do I fill dumb.
gunlover1955, I didn't realize what that little tank did either until I broke mine. Lol. Ended up losing loads of coolant everytime i rode and decided I'd just replace it with a modified turkey baster. Works great now and the coolant level is always constant.
+first For people like me that prefer to change fluids regularly, their vehicles tend to last much longer. Coolant is cheap. Why risk having it break down inside your motor when you could just change it? That's my philosophy at least.
there is no reason to change it regularly. coolant will barely show any thermal degradation after 5 years and they all contain anti-oxidants. it is also cheap to change the air in your tires every week but you aren't doing that are you? coolant is very toxic and it takes forever to breakdown. it is not a good idea to replace it and generate meaningless toxic waste
+first to each his own. I do it annually just to be safe with my machines. Feel free to peruse some dirt bike forums online but most will agree that changing coolant, especially in dirt bikes is important since these bikes are much harder on all their fluids than other motorcycles.
For real. That "pressure release" bolt is for bleeding air out of your left radiator when you're filling. Also, he gets coolant everywhere. You can leave your cap and bleeder bold on when you take off the drain plug, it will hold the coolant in from the "straw effect" (vacuum). After the drain bold is off, you can undo the cap or the bleeder bolt to let the coolant out.
Thank you brother just got my drz400sm today helped a lot

Thanks for the tuto explaining for get out the pressure it's perfect man
Thanks mate, helped me with mine. Happy riding
Short and straight. Good.
Nice video. Thanks man
how did you check the coolant level after putting it in?
Very helpful vid guys. Thanks very much
Glad we could be of assistance! Always good knowing we can help a fellow rider out!
great vid man, helped me out!
Glad I could help out! Always good to know my videos are useful.
Thanks for this.
What is the right coolant for the dr-z 400? I mean numbers and specific liquid, not brand.
I still have blue Honda oem coolant from my crf250L is blue coolant okay for the drz400sm?
Nice job. Is the a s converted to a sm?
THANK You.
APPRECIATED.
awesome thanks for the video!
galidroo Glad to have helped you out! :D
What coolant do you use
How often do you need to change it
The drain bolt was actually 8mm on my 2015 SM
Thank you very much....

Is this auburn Alabama ?
is that a china fender ?
hola yo tengo un suzuki ltz 400 (atv) es la misma operacion para el cambio de liquido refrigerante?
saludos

I swear by engine ice in every bike I own. Best coolant out there especially for these bikes and other dual sport/ dirtbikes
me too ! its the tits !
If im switching over to engine ice dont you need to run distilled water through the radiator a couple times to get out the previous coolant to prevent sludge build up
+Moto boner That sounds like a good idea regardless of the coolant.
Thanks buddy i remember some guys at a motoshop we're telling me about that on my gsxr
Make sure to drain the overfill tank as well
Thank u
Where's the fender mod video? And what fender is that year, make model fender?
you really need a fucking tutorial video on changing a front fender? I've seen those fenders on rocky mountain before tho.
hey what the full name of that coolant you using ?
Not sure of the full name, but its the advance auto brand. Just make sure you get the 50/50 pre-mix.
Why everyone unscrew the radiator cap first... ain't that's the reasons it shoots out uncontrollably 😂😂🤣🤣
If it's cold it wont.

My overflow reservoir is always empty. If there's coolant in there means the the bike is overheating.
Definitely fill overflow tank half full, if not you also run the risk of creating an air gap in your radiator. PEACE AND BRAAP.
How often should you change the coolant?
Same q man
Every two years according to the manual
fire your camera man, your video made me feel sick with all the jumping all over the place
ok maybe he doesnt have to fire him, maybe buy him a tripod then. ;-)
Ouch.
why change the coolant in the first place? top if off maybe but it should be fine for the life of the vehicle

why is that good to change air in tires ?
Correction in the title, "how to NOT change your coolant on a DRZ400"

Can’t just change coolants with out flushing right?
I stopped watching soon as he said Phillips screwdriver
No japanese motorcycle uses Phillips screws
Jis screws only
Get a new camera man
This was recorded in 5 years ago. Most likely camera doesn't have electronic image stabilizer.
Please shake the fucking camera more.
THANK You.
