    I currently live and work in Florida. It's been my home for 20+ years but I'm getting the heck outta Dodge when I reach retirement age! It used to be affordable here but that is ending. It's getting very crowded. Traffic is bad and they can only imagine solutions that involve toll roads. Public transportation is nearly invisible. Nobody wants to provide homeowners insurance because of the storm risks. Sales and property taxes are high. When I'm ready to retire in 10-15 years the entire state will be very much like a giant version of Los Angeles - expensive, crowded, sometimes dangerous - but it will have frequent hurricanes instead of occasional earthquakes. Everything will be paved over except for some swamps. Great place if you can afford a multi-million dollar condo but not for average Americans.
    Pennsylvania is looking better every day!

      The property tax thing will be your downfall. I lived in the FL panhandle for 30 years, owned an executive home in a private neighborhood laid out by the DuPont family. My property taxes in PA are twice what they were in Fl., and down there that included fire district taxes, homeowners association, etc. Property taxes here are levied by the school districts. Bad set up.

    • @andyrichardson7558
      @andyrichardson7558 Před 11 měsíci

      @@davidfuhrman9683 My homeowners insurance is 3x my property taxes and I'm in the middle of the state, well away from the worst hurricane risk. My car insurance is also higher than national averages but not as spectacularly bad. Neither will be getting any cheaper in the future.
      FL property taxes are fairly reasonable but I should mention that government services are at the bare minimum, as well. Not quite Texas-levels of being missing in action, but not good.

    • @davidfuhrman9683
      @davidfuhrman9683 Před 11 měsíci

      Florida homeowners suffer from high insurance because all of you are required to pay into a statewide fund to cover the cost of hurricane damages, even in areas that have not suffered a penny of damage.....ever. Pennsylvania suffers from high real estate taxes because most of the state is rural/agricultural in nature. When people think of Pennsylvania they immediately associate Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to it, cities. The truth is that Pennsylvania has the highest percentage of property in timber of any state in the nation. Once you get out past those cities you get to places like Lancaster, York, and Dauphin counties that are heavily agricultural, and beyond them you get to the wooded mountains, which make up probably 60 - 70% of the state. Those areas are sparsely populated but still must maintain schools, etc., so they have fewer property holders to tax in order to support the same level of funding as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. I lived in Santa Rosa County, Fl for 30 years. We had the cheapest taxes in the state due to the fact we were the only county in the state at that time that had oil and gas wells.

    We have an Amish market in Columbus, NJ, that has food, furniture, and baked goods. I’m not sure if they drive from Lancaster every day they’re open, but it’s 2 hours from there. He claims only 2 states don’t tax retirement income? Where do u get this information Matt from Investopedia
    Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming-levy no state income tax at all.
    1
    In addition, Washington levies an income tax on investment income and capital gains, but it is only for certain high earners. Elsewhere, New Hampshire currently taxes investment and interest income but is set to phase out those taxes starting in 2023. That will bring the number of states with no income tax to nine by 2027. 2:32 2:32 2:32
    From the Motley Fool
    Pa does” tax retirement plans sometimes 0:44
    Ear”ly withdrawals: no exceptions
    IRA distributions received before turning 59-1/2 aren't eligible for the exemption and are therefore fully taxable under Pennsylvania income tax law. This is the case even if you've retired from work before reaching age 59-1/2.
    Moreover, even though some situations would prevent you from having to pay early withdrawal penalties on early distributions for federal tax purposes, Pennsylvania doesn't recognize those exceptions for state tax purposes. For instance, IRA owners can receive substantially equal periodic payments before age 59-1/2 without paying an early withdrawal penalty, but Pennsylvania imposes tax on distributions made using that method. Similarly, federal penalty exceptions for items like a first-time home purchase don't apply in Pennsylvania.
    Finally, Pennsylvania taxes certain distributions from Roth IRAs if they're made before reaching age 59-1/2. Taxpayers have to pay tax if their withdrawal exceeds the amount of contributions that were previously subject to Pennsylvania income tax.
    Now from Smart Assets
    15 States That Don’t Tax Retirement Income
    Alabama Pension income
    Alaska No state income tax
    Florida No state income tax
    Hawaii Pension income
    Illinois Retirement income exempt, including Social Security, pension, IRA, 401(k)
    Iowa Pension income
    Mississippi Retirement income exempt, including Social Security, pension, IRA, 401(k)
    Nevada No state income tax
    New Hampshire Pension, IRA, 401(k)
    Pennsylvania Pension, IRA, 401(k)
    South Dakota No state income tax
    Tennessee No state income tax
    Texas No state income tax
    Washington No state income tax
    Wyoming No state income tax
    I would also like to ad some states have a very low income tax, so even though you will pay tax on your retirement plan, offset that with the high real estate & school tax in much of Pennsylvania and then consider the 6% sales tax in Pennsylvania and offset that against a small income tax on your retirement. 2:32
