The actor who played Ray did a fantastic job. That was not an easy role to play and the fact that viewers truly hated him shows what a great job he really did.
It's a hard part of growing up to watch some of your childhood friends choose the wrong path. It takes real strength of character to separate yourself from them once you come to understand that they aren't willing or able to be a good man/woman.
When a teammate's choice of action deliberately endangers and hurts another, that person is no longer a teammate. Ray deserved that cut beyond any shadow of a doubt. No doubt it hurt Gary, to see what a best friend had become, and to have to do something about it.
What I love most about this scene: the maturity from Gerry when he tells Ray he is cut. Ray starts spewing hatred about Coach Boone and Gerry stands there and says it's me. I had you cut. I don't want you on this team. The character development from how Gerry acted at the beginning of the movie pays off here.
You know, Coach Boone really shows Gerry a lot of respect in turn; he sees how politely and seriously Gerry addresses him and how he has good reasons for asking -- asking, not telling -- his coach to make an exception to his policy. And so Coach hears him out and considers it, and supports his captain. He makes sure Gerry faces the choice he made by being the one to tell Ray, but yet also he respects Gerry enough to let Gerry be the leader of his team and do this instead of Boone stepping in to do it to show who's boss. I never really thought about that before.
Gary was a natural born leader. Under Coach Boone's leadership, and Rev's conversation, Gary went apeshit at camp. For that, the team united as one. Gary's call to kill Ray off was 100% correct. He thought of the team, and not friendship. That right there is a natural born leader folks.
“I had you cut right.” That moment you can see Ray is stunned and changes his tone from “I can’t be cut from the team” to “I rather walk away than be part of them”
Come on Ray. Everyone else on the team learned to get along, that they weren't that different. Playing on a team brings people together. What's your problem? Good job by Gerry. Hard to cut a friend, but you did the right thing.

LOL "can i speak to you in private?"
"sure" let's move two feet away, now nobody can hear us

Becoming an adult involves not just making decisions but standing by them once made. Terrific scene. Teenagers would be well served to see this.

You're the captain. You make the decision but you support your decision
"Sometimes you got to cut a man loose!" - Very true.
"You're willing to just throw away our friendship for
This was very emotional and hard to cut a friend loose.
Gerry was a freak linebacker. 47 sacks his senior year. All American. Definite NFL prospect.

I'm 34 years old and to this day, in my opinion, the BEST sports film ever made! Only my opinion which isn't much.
“I had you cut Ray.” Perfect lighting and a young man stepping up to do what needed to be done. This movie truly was the best.
Best line of the whole movie.
One of my favorite movies. So many lessons, integrity, moral ethics, hard work, unity, and respect.
