- This is a very informal discussion about the shift in pack dynamics that has occurred over the last month or so but also just in the last week. We explain what and why. How it is affecting each member.
We love to talk about it like this, recounting scenarios, having a giggle at some of the relationships and personalities. Not take it all so seriously. We are just so engrossed in it all at the moment, and maybe if we took it so seriously we’d probably feel like all the behavioural stuff was a bit overwhelming.
There’s a moment in the chat where we have a laugh about how all the relationships and personalities reminds us of some kind of tv drama. And no one loves the drama more than Barney 🤣
Anyway … apologies it’s not a formal talk, I don’t know if we’re capable of doing those when talking about the pack behaviour. It’s with candour and I thought to leave it all in rather than edit it all out. You’ll know what I mean when you watch it. After reading Rosemary’s letter, we want you to feel like you’re here with us, part of the discussion … more importantly, part of this bigger journey.

Brings me leaky eyes watching Hope skip alongside Sam, smiling up at her, sooooo happy. And then eagerly waiting her turn for Luke to call her name to go through the gate. Faith would be so proud of her as I’m sure all of us who have watched her journey are.💖😍
I felt happiness watching Hope I had to look TWICE was it Hope & yes she had her Pink Collar on, she's done a 180 turn..
I have a rescue at the moment whos very similar to Hope, I've had Millie 3 weeks now & she was scared of her own shadfow, sudden moments, when I got the tea towel etc spoke loudly, this I did normally she was scared of, baby steps & she's improving day by day & becoming a confident 13month old pup who hopefully will find her perfect fur home & have owner who will continue her positive training & have patience...
I believe a more appropriate word for the Adorable Staffy Sisters is OBLIVIOUS rather than ignorant..... that's how I see them anyway!!
Sam, in regards to Miss V and R, in 1854, Thoreau wrote, " If a man doesn't keep pace with his companions perhaps it's because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music, which he hears. However, measured or faraway'. Who knows what the staffygator sisters hear, but they love every minute of their lives. I doubt they can problem solve like Joey, Rosco or Lily, but they top the class in kindness and happiness.

I love the look on Luke’s face when he talks about the different dogs personalities. You can just see the love. 💞
That he so obviously enjoys them all is so nice to see.
I just got to the part about Ms Red and Violet being or not being ignorant and laughed so loud...this is where Luke's bluntness and Sam's empathy showed. Neither were negative, just different points of view. Luv y'all both. Oh, I loved Luke's example of Tilly's air chomps when a juicy hock walks by.

I think Sam was misunderstanding the word 'ignorant'. It doesn't mean stupid, it means 'unknowing' as in not educated in certain issues. Perhaps they are the kids who will not pay attention in class! The ones who are off in a dream or not able to concentrate on the lessons.

I laughed out loud at Lilly saying Banjo was a naughty boy and that's enough of that. She definitely scolds someone when they get out of line. I love her!
Banjo has two paws in adulthood and two paws in his teens. Just as teens get kind of withdrawn because they are too cool for being a cuddle bug and want to be taken seriously like an adult, Banjo will find his way.
Banjo was always my favourite of the trio. ❣️. Mr Floppy ears when he was a puppy, now a big boy they stand up like his sisters. 🐶 ❤️

When I saw the thumbnail from the Salon video of Chance in his bow tie, I thought he had been adopted. I thought for a moment the lady that is waiting for her other dog to recover had finally made the trip to pick him up. I keep hoping for his sake, the adoption is still going through. If not I realize he always has a home on The Farm.♥️♥️
As a pack mum of 6, I sat and giggled through the conversation, we have the same thing happening, our rankings, grandma (cranky pants) her daughter, granddaughter 1, entire male (father of 3), grandson then granddaughter 2. If grandma tries to put a grandkid in their place, her daughter will get involved, if father grumbles with grandkid 2 or 3 their mum (daughter) steps in, if daughter 1 grumbles with dad daughter usually wins and dad walks away. I am there to tell them to stand down and it’s rare they are left alone all together because grandma is the Frenchie version of Chance 🤦♀️. So basically you guys are bringing a new version of dramageddon to CZcams and I’m here for it 😂😂😂

Banjo is learning that if you want to eat at the big dog table, manners are important.
Cutie Pie ... is the Top Dog of the Pack. She demands their respect. She had no Fear of Rosco from the beginning. LOL
Rover is like the long haired hippy brother whose been away, that comes home and says" hey man I'm home " and totally crashes out like he's been there his whole life. Happy, with a smile.
Chance is like the retired Navy Seal. He's living life in retirement doing his own thing, done with all the seal level vigilance of
" being on" all of the time watching etc, until someone gets in his face. Then he gives the Clint Eastwood stare down like " you don't want any of this son, go ahead make my day! You can't handle my can of wupass that I can bring"
Kind of like Sgt. Carter & Gomer Pyle. ❤️

I think I understand Luke’s use of the term “ignorant” in reference to Miss Violet (and Miss Red, as well), and I don’t find it offensive at all. The girls are mostly situationally unaware, and just living in their own Artist-Bob-Ross-“happy little tree”-world.😁 They’re completely indifferent to all the Pack dynamics because they seemingly lack any ability to “read the room.”😁 They are eternal innocents.❤️

Banjo is so special 🔷️ He was the sweetheart to all the rescue puppies and he is going to be a fantastic adult dog.
He absolutely will be a very special dog. We have known this from the beginning. This is just a stage.
I had forgotten how all the rescue puppy's used Mr banjo as a comfort and puppy piled on him, and yes banjo may do mischievous teenage stuff but is a gorgeous boy x
I have a soft spot for Banjo, he looks just like our shepherd mix when they were both puppies.
He is my favorite because he was such a sweetheart growing up. I'm sure he is still the same sweet dog except that he is maturing and it's part of who they are.
We had a dog just like Banjo when I was young. He went through the same transition when he grew up and eventually challenged his 8 year old father when he reached the age of 3. He became the leader of the pack of 13 dogs at the age of 5.
I love how Sam gets offended for a dog when anything is said that could even remotely sound negative. She's so adorable defending the underdogs. 😂

i think it's the dog mom coming out. it's actually quite endearing.. 🥰 Sam obviously geniunely loves the doggies.. anything remotely negative and the fierce momma comes out 😄. if she's like this with the doggies, God help anyone who tries anything with the kids. 😆

They bounce off each other so wonderful ... I love when they announce they adopted a dog when they look at each other and uming and ahing and Luke goes all quiet and Sam says let's cut to the chase lol xx

Miss Violet and Miss Red are pure souls whose joy and can-do attitude in life is something for all of us to aspire to. 🥰
About Lily moving up the ranks... I noticed that she bumped up to the higher level the very day you all went on your first beach trip. All the dogs were afraid of he waves, but not Lily. She dived right into the waves, strongly escaping the tide and doing her bouncey dance right in the face of what the others thought was dangerous. Right then I noticed that the other dogs were in awe of her courage and strength. Then she began to feel her power when the others noticed that she was on a different level than them.
That’s such a cool observation! I love it!
The love Lily has for Luke- like when she was getting groomed! She bawled for him!!
Diesel is so long and slender, with those perky ears and that feathery tail. He puts me in mind of a gentle, friendly woodland dog sprite, playing in the night with the birds and the beasts. He just looks so sweet. I hope he does not have any serious medical issues.
Ha ha ha! You put it like that and immediately I think of Radagast the Brown wizard from the Lord of the Rings movies. He's a bit "off" (and probably high 😅) but he knows what he's doing!
I wonder if he has Saluki in his mix. His body is amazing and the long legs too.

I’ve worked with animals all my life from a young age because I was sick as a child and now I’m disabled, but I’m able to walk by the grace of God and I have a sixth sense when it comes to God‘s creatures. My relationship with dogs is ongoing from the time they come to my family to the time they go to be with the Lord in his pack, to continue with their behaviors positive and negative training😊 You’re absolutely amazing Luke n Sam!

I really related to the letter yesterday about worrying if we don’t get a video, yet drawing a line to respect your privacy. Some of us are older and/or live alone. In my case my children are grown with children of their own. During the day while everyone’s working or at school I love to get immersed into life on The Farm and the Farm Community. I feel connected in the best way possible to other people that are there for connection too. Plus it involves dogs, dogs and more dogs, my favorite. I have always had a dog in my life and my current housemate is 9 1/2 yo pitty mix who enjoy the quiet days more than I do. Thank you for being on CZcams and coming into our lives, to make us smile, laugh and sometimes cry. It fills my days with so much joy.♥️♥️
I am absolutely fascinated with these talks about pack dynamics. I don't look at dogs the same way any more. I also realize that I am one of the lucky ones that can take the time to watch the longer videos straight through, so I never have a problem with the length. Sam, I was not offended by Luke characterizing Miss Red and Miss Violet as "blissfully ignorant". To me, ignorance does not imply anything but the lack of awareness about a particular topic. I am blissfully ignorant of many things in life as most of us are. I thought it was a perfect description of the pair. But, as you said, we love them all the more and can be envious of how they are just so full of joy and living their lives not worried about the minutiae or politics of the pack. I'm so glad sweet Lily is getting more confident. Thanks again for a great video on a very interesting topic.

Sorry, I had to laugh when Luke said "ignorance is bless" while describing the staffy sisters. I adore those two innocent pups.
Diesel in the background just makes me smile. Running here and there and here and there again. I do think something is different about him but he is doing what he needs to do. I can see why Dee knew the shelter was not a good place for him. He needs to run around. Almost like a nervous person who paces.
Whatever it is with him, he's doing his best. I putter around a lot to deal with anxiety, up and down, round and round, so I can relate. Just keep moving.

We had to laugh about Ms. Violet and Ms. Red, we see them as the Sunshine Girls, no politics just sisters living a good life. We had 6 dogs at one time their personalities were all so different like your 20. It was wonderful living with them. ❤❤❤
I love “Sunshine Girls”…..Though it might be a bit early, because of their young age…but it will be perfect in a few years. 👍💜🦮

Me too. I do not have much understanding of dog behaviour though. I cannot read many dogs when I am out and about so I tend to keep away from them. If I met a dog like Roscoe who growled at me I would be scared. And I look at the way Luke's dogs play and it all looks like fighting to me!
Hope's transformation gives me Hope for the world ....She is very special to me.
Re: Miss Red's behaviour change....i think the vet mentioned that in addition to the corticosteroids affecting behaviour, some dogs who get VERY sick at a younger age change their behavior, become more 'aggressive' for lack of better word after healing (even if they aren't given steroids). So, it could easily be either/both. I am fairly certain I remember the vet saying that about Miss Red....but I can't be 100% sure.
*I love that Luke mentioned maternal trauma/hormone timing affecting the fetus as it develops. We have known for decades that human moms who experience periods of famine while pregnant have children with altered genetics (the genes are the same of course, but the mechanisms for turning genes on/off, called EPIgenetics, is altered in fascinating ways). And relating this to Rover's development, the timing of hormones while Rover was in gestation is one of the possible causes (other than straight up random mutations) for some intersex animals.
I took a Human Embryology course in Uni and it was the most interesting/fascinating and most disturbing classes I have ever taken.
Very much appreciate your comment. Yes it was Miss Red the vet was saying that about. Honestly, in just the last 12 months with all the puppies that have come to the farm and dogs under 12 months with significant health issues we do very much feel something like what you’re saying could be a big factor.
Also, in humans and very likely all animals, the mother's trauma can be passed down in multiple generations to her daughters. It will pass immediately to sons, but then stop there, but with daughters, the trauma will continue for a couple or more generations because the genetic trauma can continue in the ovum.
Genetic trauma is a fascinating and frightening study. Shadow and her daughters here are a perfect study in nature vs. nurture

I’ve often wondered if Lily was exercising an “enforcer” role when the pack is at play in the pool because when they get rowdy she’s always on the deck or ramp barking…it makes sense now!

So could I! I love dog training videos too. Especially Victoria Stilwell. It is always the owners who are the real problem and I enjoy the way she deals with these humans who have basically treated their dogs like babies or toddlers instead of the dogs they are.

I think Luke's likening the Pack to Big brother is spot on. I get a bit sad when they go to the Dam and have games, you can see Barnie, Molly, Hope and Chance very excited about chasing the toy but pull up into going into the water. Maggie has had more swimming lessons than the other and is close to going in by herself but I feel the others need some more swimming lessons to get their confidence up. I thought today Chance was the an almost perfect reformed pack member, he played quite happily with others and by himself and as far as i could tell didn't instigate any trouble. The name Smiling Assasin would suit him well.

What a great thing your doing for Chance rewarding him for his good behavior and graduating to the house. Your patience and love for Chance is very respected.❤🐾 I hope the pack can get use to the new and improved Chance🥰🐾 and I hope this will make a huge difference in his socialization skills as well🥰🐾

HOPE I'M NOT TOO LATE!! I know I am a year late to the comments but I just had to say something. I love hearing Luke talk about his pack, honestly it's similar to how we view our children. We know them more than anyone and that includes their strengths and also the side of them that is not the best! I always joke with my kids that one graduated with honors and the other was honored to graduate!!! But yet in another area the one who didn't graduate with honors has so many beautiful qualities that the best universities could not teach you!! Ms. Violet I completely understand 10000 percent!! My daughter is on the spectrum so I understand the social challenges and also the blissful "ignorance" that Luke mentioned!! It's actually a beautiful thing. My daughter just lives her life and isn't affected by others issues and judgements. She dances how she wants and doesn't care!! She just LIVES HER LIFE!!! She is forever innocent and untainted by this cruel world. If we had more ppl in the world like her, it wud be a better place. So I'm Team Ms Violet and Red all the way!!! And Luke....you love your pack so much and you call it how u see it... so thank you for your honesty!!! I get it... completely!! But I bet nobody else other than you better call them ignorant!! (Just like our loved ones). Thank you SAM for taking a risk on sharing this video with us...despite your fears!! Lily now knows that the farm is her home and has let go waiting to be picked up by her previous dad, lily and her dancing are a joy to watch. Another reason is she is feeling better after her treatments with her specialist and xxall the dogsxx
I was thinking the same - not just about the length of time that has lapsed since Lily was adopted by Luke and Sam but also Lily understanding that Luke ‘had her back’ when she went for treatment with Neil. It’s almost as though she is reciprocating and has stepped up and has Luke’s back now. I love her - she’s such a trooper 🤩

In short, it is a sign of respect
Kinda like when foals will smack their mouth to show others they are young. It shows their lack of teeth or small teeth to show they are young. And submissive.
Bandit used to do it to Charlie and Wallace. They passed, then the daycare pack did it to Bandit and Tilly. Now it’s on a whole other level. There’s the genuine lickers and the then there’s the ingenuine lickers with a nip every 5th or 6th lick. And the ones that lick but think, doing this now but not for long!

Love how Luke describes each dog, as if they are a person, and he's saying what he thinks the dogs would say. That is SO FUNNY!!! He imitates them, perfectly!!! And when he and Sam were talking about the Staffy sisters, Luke....Intelligent??? LOL!!! It made me literally laugh out loud!! And aunty Sam, is simply defending her staffy babies. When walking with Diesel yesterday, his hips seemed disjointed from the rest of his body, plus it looked like he had a limp. Neurological? Or hit by a car? Something. Great video!! Your description of Rover is so cute and funny!!

I commented in a previous video about Diesel's gait and I wondered about an old injury. I am glad that others have noted this. Of course the increase of activity he has experienced from living at The Farm might be another factor. I am always amazed by even tiny nuances that we viewers observe when watching.
I had to laugh. I'm reading an American novel called Sheepdogs, written by a K9 dog trainer. The book stars a K9 dog handler and his K9, a barely civilized Belgian Malinois. The dog keeps assessing the actions of his Alpha, ways he could take the man down and is confused why he still respects the man's leadership. One of the lines I just read today said the dog didn't want to kill the Alpha,, he just wanted to be the Alpha. Meanwhile, the man's pretty aware of what's going on in the dog's head and hopes he can solve the crime they're working on before the dog eats him. Today's talk is so aligned with the subject, it was both funny and riveting. You two really pegged it - a soap opera.
That book sounds pretty good. I'm going to see if my library has it.

Im reading his series. He had 4 Malinois before retiring as an officer. He's in an interesting man that told stories to his family until his wife got him to write them down.
Here's a blurb on him : Gordon Carroll is the author of GUNWOOD USA and The Gil Mason Sheepdog series. Gordon grew up at the foot of the great Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Joining the United States Marine Corps at eighteen, he served for seven years, achieving the rank of sergeant (selected for staff sergeant). After that, he became a police officer in a small (wild) city nestled snugly in the middle of Denver, Colorado, before moving on to become a sheriff’s deputy.
Gordon became a K9 handler, trainer, and instructor, training and working four separate dogs for over three decades (a hundred-twenty-pound German Shepherd named JR, a ninety-pound Belgian Malinois named Max, a fifty-six-pound Belgian Malinois named Thor, and a sixty-pound fur-missile named Arrow). Gordon retired from police work in 2020 to focus on writing and spending time with his grandchildren. K9 Arrow retired with him.
Over the years, Gordon and his K9 companions assisted the DEA, FBI, and numerous other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in the detection and apprehension of criminals and narcotics. Together, Gordon and his K9 partners are responsible for over two million dollars in narcotics seizures, three thousand felony apprehensions and were first responders to both the 2012 Aurora Mall shooting and the 2013 Arapahoe High School shooting.

Aunty Sam, please don’t need to feel like you have to defend squabbles among the pack. I get why you do, especially if someone is a first time viewer. But in my opinion and based on the thousands of comments these videos get, we could listen to analysis of the pack mentality for HOURS. It’s fascinating, not just the top layer of ages developing and breeds, but the in-depth analysis Uncle Luke gives is fascinating, and gives great insight into how adults interact in packs as well. I love when you discuss pack dynamics and personalities.. it’s so interesting! It also really shows how well you train and handle each member of the pack, that they’re each an individual with their own quirks. When I first started watching, it was easy to think of the group as just a happy go lucky pack of perfect dogs. 😁

Absolutely! Quietly, I do acknowledge that intelligence is not their strength like Joey … a Kelpie. Or even the Shepherds. They are very obviously intelligent dogs. Working dogs. They use that strength to their advantage. Miss Red and Miss Violet have other strengths in abundance AND the idea that they are blissfully unaware (as in that they don’t care about the politics) just makes me love them and their attitude even more! ❤️💜

Seeing the dogs warts and all is wonderful. Yes, they are very well behaved, but it’s helpful for the dog owners to see what happens, why and learn how to stop it. Perfection doesn’t teach us anything. For those people that are going to freak out seeing the dogs acting like dogs, well they apparently can’t deal with reality. That is not for you to worry about, Sam. That is their problem. Really appreciate and love the longer videos. Thanks for all your hard work and sharing with us. ✨✨

I know it's January but throwing it out now.....Uncle Luke costume for US Halloween. Hat (sunglasses on the brim), red shirt, radio on back hip, fanny pack, khaki cargo shorts, black socks and brown hiking boots. Grow or paint on a bit of stubble...just saying. Leash up your furbabies and take with you or load up a bunch of stuffies (make sure to have some pig squeakers dangling off the side). Only those who know, will know......Fun to see exactly how many people watch the channel show up dressed like him. 😁😁😁

I love this type of video, when you let it flow naturally and not worry about what anyone will think.
