- NEW! Extreme Living Room Declutter + Organize 2023 | MESSY TO MINIMAL |MOTIVATION @NatalieBennett
OOOOOOOOKAY! It's time to declutter my Living Room for the new year! Today, I'm getting some inspiration and motivation from ME! That's right I'm going back 3 years to my very first Messy To Minimal living room episode and reacting to that video.
If you are new here, hey! I am Natalie - follower of Jesus, wife to my childhood best friend, and homeschool mama to three.
I’m also the ORIGINAL creator of “MESSY TO MINIMAL”- a widely-popular extreme decluttering and home organization series that I started in 2020. In the course of about a year, my husband and I worked to simplify our home and lifestyle. With our first pass through our home we got rid of over 80% of our possessions. Nowadays, we’re not keeping track of the number, because decluttering is more of a maintenance task to invest into the health and simplicity of our home and family life moving forward!
I continue to share this series as a way to completely DEMOLISH the idea that decluttering is a one and done activity (especially in a home with young children!) I am here to give you non-judgmental encouragement and some gentle motivation for your own decluttering and simple-living journey!
If you’re just tuning in to this series or would like a refresher here’s that full playlist: • MESSY TO MINIMAL SERIES

🪑 Well, Cas says kids are almost always butterflies, so they're not necessarily going to put things away out of sight every single time they're done with them. Sometimes us crickets and ladybugs forget that.
Hey for the window seat in your home school room, Sarah Richardson made her window benches out of ikea refrigerator cabinets as the base and then added a top and crib mattresses fit on them perfectly.
For the bookends, you could attach the acorns to the plain ones. That way they're both cute and functional!
I was thinking that too!
Me too
Honestly, I really good idea. Is the books that you can't part with is you keep them for your grandchildren. My mom tried to do this and I told her no get rid of them all and I only kept one book for my childhood and it ended up searching online for multiple books I had as a kid that my mom tried to have me keep for my kiddo. So my advice is the ones you can't part with store away and keep.
I love how you’re using the third cabinet to hold toddler and baby toys for your nieces and nephews! That’s such a kind way to make others feel welcome in your home. 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for this comment! MUCH better than the other one I received that told me minimalists don’t have anything in their home except what their immediate household members use.
Who comes up with these rules anyway?! 😅
Totally true!! I have a couple friends who keep baby friendly items even though they don’t have any littles in the baby phase and it is SO welcoming!
How is life in Japan?! Missing your videos. I see you have a few new ones. Will go and watch. Always loved your advice. God bless ❤️
@@ulandibrewer6081 that’s so sweet of you, thanks for checking in. We’re doing really well. Enjoying the time with my husband home and doing lots of fun tours are Japan! 🤗 Living in a small apartment has made filming difficult, but I’m on Instagram pretty regularly.

When people ask why you still find things to declutter, it is not only that kids grow and the needs changes, it's also that there is always new stuff coming in. It's a never ending process. We can slow it down but we cannot completely stop it. Specially with kids!
Great job. Love your videos. From Argentina 🇦🇷
There is WAYYYYY less stuff coming in than what it was like before. My shopping habits have changed so much since I started decluttering. It’s mostly just necessities now with a few “fun” things purchased with intention! Even the most intentional or minimal homes, though still have stuff to swap in and out this the cycle of decluttering is never ending! Just like you said!
@Natalie Bennett I can't believe you answered me. It's the first time I commented on your channel, cuz english is not my first language, so I'm never too confident to write. I've been watching your videos for a long time now, but I've just subscribed recently. I try not to fill up with so many subscriptions, but I really enjoy your content 💜
"i'm still a living, breathing, changing person" 💯❤
Yep!
So my husband and I have worked out a system for us that has worked really great for things that aren't explicitly or exclusively within my "jurisdiction" so to speak (aka, things that are his or he uses primarily, or that we need to make a solidly joint decluttering decision on), and we call it the "Ask Matt" box (Matt being my husband) 😅
So if I'm decluttering during the day while he's at work, and come across things that it doesn't seem like we've/he's used in awhile, or it doesn't have a home and/or I don't know where the home is, or I'm thinking maybe he'd be comfortable parting with it, or we have multiples and I'm not certain if we need multiples, etc... then I put that thing in the box. Then once a week-ish, or when it gets full/we have time, we run through it together. I don't pester him about getting rid of anything in it, and he knows that just because it's in the box doesn't necessarily mean I'm wanting him to part with it. But it gives things that don't have a home a place to hang out while we go through our house systematically. It helps me a lot because I'm a SAHM of Littles and it helps to have a destination for those things while they're in limbo. And it helps him because he only has to answer questions about a limited number of items at a time and he doesn't get overwhelmed that way, but overall we still make steady progress. 😊
LOVE this!!
Noooo! I loved when you found that scarecrow pillow! It screams “90s grandma” to me and I love it😂😂
I'm glad I'm not the only mom who's been sucked into Minecraft 😂 love your videos. We downsized last year substantially and after getting rid of so much, sometimes I ask myself how I still have stuff to get rid of and how my house is still so full. I get to feeling guilt over it so thank you for the reminder that as living breathing humans decluttering is just part of life and we aren't morally inept for accumulating stuff!
The electronics and cord clutter really hit home with me. My middle son is a huge gamer and has all the things. It overwhelms me to try to declutter or organize that space. I always enjoy your videos. They are down to earth and relatable
Haha 😂 this one cracked me up, I’m so glad it’s not just me that finds random foods occasionally in really strange places. 😂
I love you going back over your old videos and seeing how far you've come. I mentally do that sometimes with how we lived in our old house (huge purge prior to moving, another purge on unpacking) and how we live now. My house and I can now breathe.
Very nice !!! Love the feeling of spring coming up and the warm sun!!
I’m enjoying your reactions to your old declutter videos…it’s fun to see where you came from and where you are now. Also triggers my memories of what I decluttered along with you🥰
My fav thing about Tuesday’s!
🪑It was encouraging to see how you handled the gaming supplies. I feel this same overwhelm with controllers and cords and have been putting off what needs to be done. Today's the day to get that in better order. Remembering to focus on progress not perfection, too. You are excellent at letting your home and how it's used tell you where things belong.❤️ Have a great week!
Thanks for another motivational video Natalie ❤
It was fun to see you clean up your living room space. It’s definitely been motivating me to get rid of old stuff.
"you are the cord management king" also see: "im in over my head so this is yours now babe" lol totally relate!
Haha flattery to get what I want! But also, I said he was the best before he was home and asked him for help! I have video proof! 😂
🪑You’ve definitely encouraged me to declutter and reorganize various areas of my house!! Cool to see the older videos!
🪑 I love your videos, and these videos of revisiting old decluttering episodes is great to see where you've grown. I'm a few days behind on my Minimalists' Game challenge for January, so I appreciate the motivation and ideas for areas I can work on some more.
I’ve been looking forward to seeing you transform your office
You telling your old self "great job" is so pure and sweet!
I would be overwhelmed with the gaming stuff too!
Weston is wonderful.
Your kiddos are getting so big. They’re really nice kids. 💞
🪑 sooo many good ideas! I’m in the beginning of a declutter so I’m loving this look at how I t was for you.
🪑🛋🥰 Thank you Natalie for sharing with us! I love seeing the children grow 😊❤
I was decluttering books and homeschool stuff yesterday and literally came across the "I am a Bunny" book and couldn't part with it either! Such a cute book 💜
Thank you for another lovely video xx
I love this videos so inspiring and motivating.
I just love any Natalie videos, lol.
See you Tuesday
Natalie, you are so inspirational, so real, reason why I LOVE your channel. Like you, I love books, so much that I have quite a few up in my office and downstairs in my bedroom. Milonthd ago I took some to agoodwill but I do have a few that I can't part with. Thank you for inspiring us to live a minimal life with what makes us happy, healthy and more productive. ❤️
I loved this! I did much of the same this weekend. Decluttered some neglected spots, Tweaked the organization in those and other spots to help them function better in my home and still came out with a fairly sizable Declutter pile even after several years of this journey. As you said: still a growing and ever changing household and takes constant maintenance ☺️
Missed the premiere thanks to winter weather and school closure.
Took a minute to watch this morning before everyone wakes. Enjoyed the decluttering, especially the couch pillows! I'm a keeper of pillows, but started buying pillow covers instead. While more expensive, pillow covers reduces the amount of storage needed.
Looking forward to the future book shelves and window seat! I could use one of those myself.
Thanks for another great vlog, and for sharing your life and family with us!
Have a blessed week, Natalie!
My hubby and I moved into our forever home in November and I want to get it all done at once, but have to realize that it will take time. Thank you for being my decluttering inspiration! 🪑🪑🪑
Gujioo
Hey Natalie. Great update. Whilst you felt chaotic doing the gaming cupboard, it was great to show that it can still be overwhelming, or you need others help to finish, and that that is ok. We feel your pain girl. Awesome work.
🪑 that's the first thing I noticed it's how little your kids were then... Wow has time flown by!!!!! I'm working on my bedroom and I will say it is a job. WOW!!! but I want my house more minimal so it's definitely a work in progress and your series of decluttering has helped so much! Thank you
Thanks for another great video!
We have similar storage in our couch and oh man it gets dusty inside. Also every bit of crumps kids leave on the couch seems to fall down there. I would recommend to put your blankets and pillow cases in a storage case. I did that and it sure helps. 😊
Weston saying "I can help with that" was such Sam from Holes vibes ❤️❤️
I had the same thought!
Reminder is on ❤ looking forward to seeing you ❤
🪑
The window seat sounds like a dream come true, what a wonderful idea :)
🪑awesome video, love the new cabinet!
🪑Hi! This look back series is so fun!
I’m so glad you enjoy it! It’s fun to look back at these massive declutters and see how far we’ve come! Thanks for being here, Jenny!
Missed your videos. You got good humor and I'm excited to see the progress on your home, you have great ideas
I have and love that couch. We keep all of our off season dog supplies, overflow dog stuff, and dog grooming stuff in the compartment as well as extra blankets and a few extra throw pillows.
Well done Natalie!!!

Those bookends are amazing. They last. They may not be pretty but you know what they hold up your books and they don't take up extra space. I tried all the pretty ones years ago and now for many years when my wise old grandma showed me the metal ones she said this will give you your space back and organization. They're the bookends every household should have. But I love toys you use them you can't even tell there on your shelf so I have family members that use them and they put a pretty knick-knack next to it that doesn't have to hold up the books. Your videos are always so amazing and inspiring. You make me look at the things I get frustrated about and be grateful. I'ma front closet it's small but it is housed six-plus of us. My kitchen cabinets aren't a lot but you know what when I look at what I really have to have and not what I think I have to have all of a sudden my house feels bigger. I used to put a lot of stuff on my walls I have become a person that does less and I've noticed my family members do as well it feels so spacious. One day my daughter found a picture she's in her early twenties. It was the time when you had to have knickknack shelves and all the stuff on them and it had them a lot of stuff on your walls and all the knickknacks. My daughter said oh my mom it doesn't even feel like we live in the same house and she laughs and she says what made you decorate like that. I said well that's kind of how they did it and many people still do. I feel like I can breathe I don't have to dust all the stuff like I used to have to. Years ago we donated so much stuff that the donation truck that we were moving. No my house wasn't a hoarder house it was just lots of stuff in that I had that were Hudson a small space and because it was my grandma's. I realized I can have pieces of my grandma it doesn't mean it has to be everything and it doesn't have to be big pieces.
🪑
You rock!
Such an encouraging video! I spent the past week, myself, rearranging and decluttering our former living room now husband’s study. So much work on the room I called my Room of Delayed Decisions! But so worth it. Your videos inspired to finish the project. Thanks again!
You can do it!
Thanks for the video. Such cosy company :D
Its 4 am and I am watching you and this video and decluttering my craft room thanks for sharing craft room is looking good I can see the carpet Yay Chel Ellis UK
Absolutely loved this as I do all your content 🪑🪑🪑Enjoy the snow ⛄️ & have a lovely week 😘
Thank you! You too!
I use plastic key rings with labels to identify cords and cables , and gather like ones together in azip lock and label the bag, when i am confident that I have them all and know which item they are attached to I can then happily dispose of them
I feel like we need the emoji of the day to be 🥐 instead of 🪑 IYKYK 😂😂😂
Oh my gosh! The book "I am a Bunny" was my favorite while I was a baby and my mom bought a copy for my son for the baby shower. I will ALWAYS have a copy of that book in my home and no minimalist will ever convince me otherwise 💓💗🤣🤗
I love the idea for your Book Nook...I too will never get rid of books I love!
🪑 Hi Natalie! This will be a fun video to watch to compare from your first Messy to Minimal video. ❄️ Nice you could get another of those same cabinets. It looks nice and adds to the wall until you DIY that wall later. ❄️ Those are cute animal baskets for storage. ❄️ I was also thinking of adding a chaise to the other end of your couch for more seating and storage as well. ❄️
🪑 Just from the intro clips, I feel like this video will be so relatable! Also I saw a shot in there with the book I Am a Bunny - my son’s favorite book! My mom buys it for literally anyone having their first baby because she thinks everyone should have a copy.
Hey mamas 🥰 new subscriber here, I’m also new to the mom CZcams creator gang and your videos are such an inspiration! 🤍👏🏼
🪑 love watching the videos and seeing that your home is real and not a show home like some xxxxxxxxx
🪑Well you did a great decluttering video & seeing you in those 3yr ago videos is awesome. I think 🤔 your right about having more space to put things. It happens! We had a 1100sqf house & moved into a 3600sqf house which we love. But we didn't think we'd ever fill it all up. In the past 22yrs we have, even though we got rid of a lot of things we still did. But a couple of yrs ago we did go through & declutter a lot. So it's pretty good except my sewing room. I need to get 😩 it cleaned & decluttered. I had a broke fumur last June & was laid up for about 7 weeks. So still trying to get back from that! It'll take me awhile but I'll get it done! Thanks ♥️ ☺️
🪑 happy to be decluttering with you bestie. I've also been moving furniture around. We have a family member coming to live with us for a year (we're in Australia, she's coming from CA) and we need to convert our library to her bedroom! Wish me luck!!
🪑 I subscribed to your channel when you started the messy to minimal series. It’ incredible to see how you’ve decluttered through the years! And your kids have grown so much… time really do fly by! I’m really familiar with chicken math 🐔🐔🐔
Well, I didn't realize how long I've been here! I decluttered with your last series, and I'm doing it again (with a few times in-between ;) )
Fun to see how our styles change overtime, I'm also over the whole live, laugh, love style. Also realize I hate purple in my decor, but I had so much! It's been fun to add in more colours that I truly enjoy.
Wait you mean it’s not just CZcamsrs that declutter their house multiple times over the years?!!! 😜
Haha oh the purple! Deep Aubergine was our wedding color and it had me in a chokehold for a while there with home decor too! 😆
My husband and I are wanting to be more minimal this year! 🪑
I’m starting to shop around for a new couch for our house, and your couch looks so similar to what we want! Love the extra storage. Loving this series revisiting old videos! 🤩
I would love to know where you got the couch. I'm on the hunt for one and this looks like the size would fit my space
Same. Did you catch what it’s called?
Two chaises would be nice! Lol my husband and I always rush to the couch to try and make it to the chaise first when it's movie time 🤣
Glad to see you this morning. Guess I've gotten spoiled by you. Love your videos & wanted this one to be longer. Guess I'll have to play some old videos. I love cleaning along side you.
Haha! This video is 8 minutes longer than last week’s! I didn’t expect to get a comment about it being too short 😂 thanks for the love, Renee!
IKEA couches are the best! I have the vimle series and with 5 kids I love that I can remove every single cover and wash in the washing machine. We have had our 3 seater for a few years and this year plan to extend it into the L shape.
Our house doesn’t have hardly any closets at all, or any pantry, anything like that. Barely has tiny closets in our bedrooms! But you’re right, I’m actually feeling thankful now that I didn’t learn to fill those closets. It’s less to unlearn and less to process through!
Good job 👏 👍
Get it all done with me & day in the life videos are my absolute favorite videos 💕 32:08
Yayyyy! I’ll see you back here in a couple weeks then! ♥️
@@NatalieBennett oh I absolutely love ALL your videos and I watch all of them no matter what your my all time favorite CZcamsr…. But the others I mentioned are just my favorite ones you make 😍
@@katiee5903 you’re so sweet! I’m blessed to have you here! ♥️
@@NatalieBennett awwww thank you 😊 I absolutely adore your channel you always make such wonderful content 💕 and I absolutely LOVE how open you are with your faith Jesus is EVERYTHING to me so it makes me feel really awesome to support your channel 🥰
I look forward to your videos every week. You are so real, yet calming and inspirational. Yay for books!
I was in the middle of decluttering all kinds of spaces in my house the last few weeks. I was LOVING it and definitely nesting here in my second trimester. Aaaannd now I’m on bedrest to keep baby in. I’m frustrated, but also thankful as I look around and see the areas I hit already. I guess I have to take that progress. 🤣
Praying for you! Take it easy, mama!
I was watching this and my 5yo asked if i could pause it because he doesn't want to miss any 😂
Hello from Malta. New subscriber. Loved this video. God bless 🙌
you can get a little TV shelf that goes on top of the tv and put your control there to keep surfaces clear.
You could take the acorn book ends that you love and glue them onto the basic Amazon bookends, and it would be adorable and functional.
An observation for the book cabinet, if I may! I’ve had similar problems in my own home, trying to keep skinny books in a wide bookcase organized, and I’ve finally realized it’s a bit of a losing battle, because when the stack of books is so wide, if you take almost any of the books out, they might fall out. If the bookends don’t work out, perhaps you could consider small basket/bins for the books that you could pull out, so you wouldn’t have to keep up with the maintenance! your ideas for future bookshelves sounded cool too! Best of luck ❤️
Thanks for the suggestion! The bookends are working fabulously and actually way better than the bin system I've tried in the past. Different strokes!
If you ever want to get rid of the acorn book ends I'm interested. I LOVE them!!!!
I think you should do bulit-ins on the TV wall. That would be beautiful!
I would also add a corner piece to the couch and add another two-seat piece to create an L shape.
I really need to declutter pillows and just get ones with changeable covers!
Love this! Parenting hack: blankets and pillows store best when built as blanket forts! Even my grown kid still loves a blanket Fort ;)
Love it!
I definitely keep books-it’s probably what I have most. And asking how do you still have things to declutter is like asking how do you still have dirty dishes. Because I’m living 😂♥️🪑
The croissant reminds me of the time when I was a kid and my younger sister decluttered her room and put things she didn't want up in the attic. Years later I was with her when she went through those things again to decide if she was keeping anything. There was an apple core in one of the bags...! 😂
I recently moved into a bigger home with less storage space than before…I view it the same as you! Annoying at times, but really makes me not hold on to things! Overall it’s a good thing
🪑 I unsubscribed to almost everyone on CZcams to stay off my phone more. But! I left you and Dawn for my weekly motivation to declutter ♡
I'm glad you're here, Shauna!
Hi Natalie! Always love your videos, it’s like chatting with a friend. 😊
I have the finnala sleeper sofa and hate it! I find it so hard and uncomfortable. I was surprised you like yours so much and now I’m wondering if ours is hard because it’s got the bed in it. Anyways, I think two chaises would be nice or a large ottoman. My husband also loves a recliner, I had to search high and low for an affordable, comfortable, and stylish one. I must admit, it is pretty comfy! Haha
I still have a cabinet of some my youngest child's toys, that over the years visitor friends children play with when visiting.
Now my grandchildren run to it as soon as they arrive at Grammie's house.
Omg I'm not the only mom who finds dried up food around the house!
I’d love to know where you purchase your couch pillow covers! I love the idea of switching them out throughout the year.
I love these episodes where you look back. It normalizes the continual work that minimalism takes. We recently painted our living room and I had to take everything down and now I'm not wanting to put it all back up. It feels so fresh and clean! Our living room lamp also broke and I'm trying to figure out what to replace it with. In this video I noticed you have light shining from behind your TV. Can you share what you use or how you are doing it? I don't remember you mentioning it previously.
It’s the Phillips hue tv light system!
What I do with pillows that are falling apart is I buy pillow covers for that size of pillow and I put it in. If the pillow is just too destroyed, I'll take the stuffing out and use the stuffing in a new pillow so it doesn't go to waste and also save some money with not having to buy a plain pillow to fill a case.
A great strategy for that situation! Thanks for sharing!
Perhaps a vacuum storage bag for the seasonal couch linens and pillows? Will keep them crumb free and contained.
I'm late to the premier, but that gaming keyboard will be useful if you ever have to type in emails or passwords with your controllers. Still doable with a regular controller, but much faster with a keyboard.
I totally feel you on the electronics clutter and ALL THE CORDS. 😂 My husband is much better at knowing where everything goes and what works/doesn't work, so I leave that up to him. Lol
On a side note, I enjoy the music you put in your videos. I usually find video music annoying, not yours. You put alot of thought into the details. Great job!
🪑 Waving hello from Australia 🇦🇺
Fun vlog Natalie.. you have come so far. Yes decluttering is personal.. you can be minimal in some areas and not in others (I love that you are proud of your books😊, but you still only have what you love... so you are still minimal!.. there are NO RULES to minimalism). Plus everyones "stuff stress threshold" is different.
What I find interesting is how Americans always talk about "storage" in homes.. in Europe we don't have any storage "built in" our houses.. you buy/rent "the shell" (as you call it) and then you buy the storage you personally need eg waredrobes, cupboards, etc...if you move house, you have to take it all with you (also you remove all light fixtures, curtain rods and curtains etc because everyone has different tastes, so they don't want your stuff. In rentals you also have to paint all walls white before leaving).
So interesting. So are there never closets or alcoves for storage ever?
@@NatalieBennett No not in "modern" houses ie since the 1950s... but if you have a 200 to 500yr old house someone may have put a shelf or small cupboard in a nook eg next to an old chimney flume.. but most get ripped out again because the chimney gets ripped out over time either to replace it or to remove completely because it doesn't work anymore..especially in the bedrooms upstairs. You may still find an inglenook fireplace in a living room, dining room or kitchen which often have some shelves in the wall beside it (where an old door went to another room or to the stairs leading up to the bedroom)... this is especially true of 200+yr old houses in the UK.
In modern houses, if its not open concept with floating stairs you might get a "Harry Potter" closet under the stairs.
built-ins would look so pretty on that living room wall :)
Oops just got to your plan about bookshelves ❤️😂 sounds so pretty!
