Music Teacher Reacts: PENTATONIX - Can You Feel The Love Tonight
So once again we see the mighty Pentatonix just masterfully arrange their own version of a classic song. It's remarkable.
I stop a lot in this one to point out a few details that I think are paramount to extra enjoyment!
Please don't pay too close attention to the bags under my eyes... I've been up for a while haha.
    Hope you like the video!

Matt is my absolute favorite. People are FINALLY beginning to give him his due. I understand why they didn’t at first though, and it had nothing to do with Matt. People were heartbroken that Avi left. I was as well, and to be honest... I was ready to hate whoever took his place. But then I heard him. And I felt the energy he brought, and the range he has (which btw may be the most dynamic in the group INCLUDING Scott).
What impressed the most however, is his consistency. I encourage everyone to listen to the live performance of Sound of Silence hosted by Mercedes Benz. You expect imperfections here and there from a live performance, and everyone had them.... except Matt. He was absolutely flawless.. He sounded as if they pulled the audio from the studio version.
Avi will always be a legend. He’s too good not to be. But I personally feel the group has never sounded better than they do now. Everyone had to elevate their game, and now you hear intricacies and complexities from the other members that wasn’t as prominent before, because Avi took care of all that. With Avi, it’s like they had a cheat code. With Matt, it’s like they had to 100% the game themselves, and personally I think they are better for it.

Avi is great. There is no way that can be denied. I do think that Matt blends better with everyone. His voice is so smooth. His tone and vocalizations remind me of Nat King Cole. It is just so smooth. I also think the differences that Matt brings has allowed them to grow and go in different directions.

    • @Joodster
      @Joodster Před 3 lety +40

I really like listening to Matt. For me, his tone is brighter sounding and perhaps more distinct, especially when singing words vs the bass instrumental notes. Not sure if I'm conveying that correctly. It also seems like he's able to hit lower notes than at first and he then went pretty high on the new trailer. Plus that smile! He seems like he'd be genuinely fun to be around.

You stated that so well. I agree 100%
      Love Avi! Adore him!
But I adore Matt as well. And I agree. The group has thrived since he came on. Not that they wouldn't have if Avi had stayed. But.....man, you know what I mean.

I think the group had to fumble around a little bit and rediscover themselves with Matt - nobody can deny they wouldn't have become PTX without Avi, but they wouldn't be who they are now without Matt. Both men are precious humans and add(ed) their own unique magic to the blend.

Rather than just symbolically, they literally sing "in perfect harmony" IN perfect harmony. That's the part of the song where it's appropriate. In others, they do the more interesting thing of dropping in and out to build or pare back certain phrases. It's what they do better than any other group anywhere.

We Pentaholics tend to listen to the whole group first...then we pick someone...for me it's usually Scott because I feel he has the hardest job if he's not leading, having to sing 'around' Mitch and Kirstie... then I listen to Mitch, then Kirstie, then Kevin..then Matt...and then I listen to the whole group again ! So when we say we've listened/watched these vids hundreds of times.. we actually mean it literally 😊

The difference between the two FABULOUS PTX Basses, is that Matt is a Lyrical Bass & Avi is a Classical Bass! Which is why Avi resonates so well in their lead ups to The Evolution of Music & Aha! Both operatic pieces - Made for Avi’s voice. But Avi would not really have been able to pull the The Grinch lead, Matt was MADE for that AND for his rich role in the Sound of Silence (just 2 examples).
The fact is, PTX said that they wanted to enter the chart scene with RnB and Pop sounds, remember? That’s what they said at the Sing Off because Sarah B was amazed that only 5 voices could sound so full! Of course Avi was part of that rich, full sound, but those genres were really not his style! He did a fabulous job achieving it anyway, but these genres are right up Matt’s street! He’s a natural!
And for us, it’s a Win-Win situation, we had/have the best of both worlds!! I’m simply LOVING Matt!! 🤗

Thanks for another great reaction.Scott is heavily involved with arranging but they do have a permanent arranger/producer, Ben Bram, who has been with them from the start and over sees their music. As 2 of their 3 Grammys were for arranging Ben has 2 Grammys too! Ben was 'working' with Scott and encouraged him to enter "The Sing Off" competition and helped find the bass and beatboxer to fill the sound out.

Ben Bram, Scott and Kevin I think are the main arrangers but they also do whole group jam session and brainstorm out stuff. There were a few songs on a particular album where Kevin did his own personal versions first and the group (probably Scott) was like "yeah let's do that!" Their mashup, New Rules X Are You That Somebody is an example and also showcases Matt quite well.

I think Scott did their arranging originally (with input from the rest of the group), but now I believe that professional arranger Ben Bramm works with them on virtually everything. I’ve read that the group goes to him with their ideas and he makes it all work.

Once again you hit it out of the park for me! I have some musical background, definitely not professional, but enough to know what you are explaining. As Pentatonix have always described themselves as choir nerds and you describe yourself one as well, I think that is why you get so excited about how they sound and what they do.
You made the comment that they always sound so fresh and I love this. I have been watching them since they began back in 2011, and all their music is still fresh for me, no matter how many times I hear it. As a Pentaholic their amazing works of musical art will never get old for me!

And YES thank you for pointing out Kevin's beatbox/percussion, his talent blows me away every time but doing that 80's drum beat from mid to end was what I was drawn to. That takes nothing away from Scott, Mitch, Kristin and Matt because this was amazing.

Mmmyes, Mitch is also mah boy. His voices is just unbelievable. Everyone's great, but he is just out of this world. (And from what I've seen of PTX interviews, all the other members agree, too. Whenever they're each asked who's the best singer among them, or who's voice did they wish to have if they couldn't have their own, and it's always Mitch they talk about. He's just inhumanly good.)
And totally off topic, but man I wish I had Kirstie's confidence. I am way too shy to pull off a dress like that, and I wish I wasn't, because I've got the, uh, attributes, but I'm always covering up because I lack the confidence.

Hi. I'm a long time Pentaholic. I love watching people who understand music react to them. Ley people's reactions are fun too, but having any kind of musical knowledge just ups the antenna as far as appreciation for their talent goes. I'm loving your channel and have just subscribed.
Now, I said all of that to say this: I would love to see you react to Citizen Queen. It is an all girl acapella group that was, I believe, pit together by Scott Hoying. Scott does a lot of their arrangements as well. They are incredibly talented. Think about it. I promise you won't regret it.

I can tell you are a real musical geek. If you want to hear something that will blow your mind, listen to the PTX version of White Christmas. They sing the first verse normally and then they break out into at least three different musical styles to finish the song. The members of PTX can sing in any style of music and are very aware of music styles and history. I don't think there is a video but I think you will be astounded by it and enjoy it. React to it or not, but you will appreciate their arranging talent.

Re: the arranging... ALL the members are involved, initially. They sit around an actual table and “jam” on the song they wish to perform and record until they have a rough schematic of the song. It is then that-yes, Scott, but also Kevin- get together with Ben Bram to refine the chart to the perfection we all hear. Still, all members contribute more or less to the arrangements. Kirstie wrote-and sang the lead- On the original, “My Eyes”, so she had a larger role in the arrangement.
