As an irish fan i would always be careful what way you interpret the phrase 'nothing to lose', especially against an English team, both Northampton and quins are semi finalists for a reason and either of them can win this weekend, all the pressure is on leinster and toulouse being at home so all to play for, croke park will have 82+ thousand supporters for a club match, that's more than rugby world cup final, should be a fascinating game.

seems a bit unbalanced eg 1 out of 4 teams has 80 of first 23 paid for would leave a lot of extra money to go around for coaches etc so a cap of 7 or 8 players who dont come from catchment area would make sense! otherwise leinster are pretty much the argentina situation in super rugby! wales/ scotland and italy should just stack one team then!

"Competition needs consistently good english teams" - Horgan of last 10 years of Heineken cup winners 5 French, 4 English and 1 Irish

    • @DM-rp9ik
      @DM-rp9ik Před měsícem +2

The competition was turned on its head 10 or 15 years ago because the Irish won 5 out of 7. English and French sides won about 60% over the 17 years. With the new format, they are now up at 90% plus. No Welsh teams can even get into the tournament. No Italians and maybe the odd Scottish team.
I'd argue that the tournament is a mess because of this. Nobody in Wales, Scotland, or Italy will get on board when they don't even have a team in it to begin with.
The sides that they made way for. The middling English and French clubs decided they couldn't win it, so they don't bother and send B and C teams to places every year to get pumped. Montpellier losing 87 - 7 was a parody of elite rugby.
This, in turn, makes Toulouse and Leinsters job easier as teams roll out B or C teams against them, meaning they get high seeding.

Great show as always Guys, thank you. Just some interesting observations, the only discussion about sending under-strength team for matches surrounds the SA teams, the Bulls and "what team will the Sharks send for the semi" Fine for Leinster to send its 2nd string side to SA and get whipped twice!! Teams prioritise the competition they think they can best win, Leinster try for both and in 22 and 23 won neither, maybe 24 its the Investec Cup? So, in SA's first 2 years with the URC has seen an all-SA final in 22 and a finalist in 23, (who knows what 24 holds) probably increased the TV viewership and match day attendance as well. Can't be all that bad for the competitions. Re home semi's etc, well rugby is controlled in the North so one expects everything to stack against the local SA teams, am sure they are used to it.

For the past 2 seasons, the URC has been great. The SA public have really taken more to it than the European Cup. That's the starting point to a conversation about their participation. I think the pundits are AngloFranco-Leinster centric & want to fashion it so. The EC early rounds is a joke. Talk about that pls. I'm not SA, but Irish. Enjoyable show other than that.

champions cup should be much shorter and take place after the domestic league finals. It could include the 4 semifinalists from each tournament in a bracket form that only involves knockout games. the constant stop-start of URC, and 6N and champions cup so obviously kills any momentum that any one tournament can generate. for example, we have champions cup semis this wknd and then will have to wait three weeks to build up the excitement again. this would eliminate the need for sides to choose between the two, and fans getting the short end of the stick when a B team is rolled out for a champions cup or league game

I would rather the Six Nations have the bottom placing side playing the winner of the Rugby Europe in a knockout game post both championships than SA joining. The main reasons are what have been mentioned in this, the jeopardy. Every game in the Six Nations would have more meaning to avoid that game whereas the Rugby Europe winners would have even more of a carrot for the chance to promote up. Just Adding SA increases the tournament length, we already have the Summer / Autumn internationals where teams can play these sides. Just to mention SA schedule for this; Wales, Ireland, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Scotland and England. Is there truly a need for them in the Six Nations?

I would rather watch an Anglo-French cup. I just don't like franchise rugby.
As with here, I keep hearing Irish people tell me it is the pinnacle of NH rugby, and the English and French pundits agree, because they played in it. It matters to players because it is the top showcase of yourself. The majority of English supporters, and possibly the French, don't rate it over their domestic league, but our opinions don't seem to matter - except to our clubs, who know they can't ignore that.
If the sport wants to rejuvenate interest in the cup, bring back home/away, make it European again, and move the QF, SF, final to consecutive weeks the other side of the domestic finales, then everyone will have nothing to lose.

  • @clairejones4041

So we have had a wander down memory lane where we totally ignored previous games between Leinster and Saints. There was more talk about La Rochelle than there was about Saints. Please if you are saying that this is a preview actually preview all four teams.
Saints went to Dublin in 2013. No one gave them a hope. But this group of pundits could barely remember Saints won with 14 in Thomond Park a few weeks ago.
    Poor fare gentlemen.

the south african experiment has been fun, but why not a domestic league with just irish (4), english (7 or 9), welsh (3) and scottish (2) sides? better for player welfare, less costly travel logistics for teams, heaps more visiting fans, and it would give a new spark to the b&i lions tours. as an irish fan, i remain much more likely to watch saracens v quins rather than stormers v bulls. i doubt the english sides would have ever gone for this, until these last few financially disastrous seasons...
