As good as the modern super cars are i still think the modern classics are the enzo, slr, Carrera and ford gt
and a classic very able driver too

The sound of this car never gets boring. When it accelerates, the sound tickles the spine.
This car has the most glorious noise I’ve ever heard.
Then you should search a "Lexus LFA" video...
@@OscarDeCicco meh. High-pitched NA engines aren't for everyone. I love the LFA personally, but I can appreciate the SLR's guttural bellow just as much! 😁
The glorious noise along with the simple torque converter trans that allows the engine revs to slur between gear changes. The engine and trans go so damn well with each other.
@@flyingphoenix113 Agreed. I used to live near Woking where they were made. Often seen them driving around the roads back in those days. They sound amazing in the flesh

This was my favorite era of MB design. This SLR and the SLK 55 AMG are beautiful cars.

Typical TV companies! Channel 5\Fifth Gear dumped Tiff for a younger audience and now uploading his videos from 17 years ago. SOOO dis-respectable to Tiff.
These TV companies need to listen to fans and viewers not themselves

beauty is in the eye of the beholder & I think it is one of the best looking cars ever, I luv it.
It was definitely ahead of its time. Even after all these years, it still looks quite modern.
@@dereksbooks and still goes quite modern too. Check out carwows video. It still gives a modern aston Martin and a Ferrari a hard time.

I have not watched many Fifth Gear reviews, but that is one of the best reviews of a first generation allmost supercar I have seen. To the point on it's strong and weak points. This review holds up 15 years, kudos to Nedell!

Trivia: At 2:30, that is the exact SLR(RX53 KHP) that was used in a Top Gear review by Jezza Clarkson from 2004( Series 4, ep 2).

One night, a long time ago, I passed Paris Hilton's Mercedes slr McLaren parked outside of Tramp nightclub in London. Apparently she wrote it off. Beautiful car.

A lot of people didn't understand it, because it wasn't your traditional mid-engined rocketship with a manual transmission. This was a GT that could also be a supercar. Ferrari 599 and Porsche 997 Turbo are the same. A car anyone can reasonably drive fast.

that interior is so fischer price though. particularly the radio and hvac panels
This car was nothing more than an incredibly fine tuned race car for street use.

The version to get would be an mso version in black with a black and grey interior. Or that in a 722 version.
You don't get the turbine wheels on those versions however.
I'll take either the 722 S Roadster or the Stirling Moss.
MSO SLR could be made by Mansory
@LukeDogg20 The mso cars have a special front bumper and other parts that were made by mclearn themselves, it's the same with mso 675lt and p1 cars.

Such an aged interior.
These have such a weird pulsating exhaust tone.
Plus, how on earth did it get to 1800kg using CF body!
It has the engine, 5 speed automatic and the interior from other Merc models (SL 55 AMG), be it specifically tuned for this car.
Those are the heavy weight parts of the car.

McLaren F1 is using Merc engine for 2021.

V8 sound is the best
You KNOW you're being taken to the cleaners pricewise when a button with direct access to the factory customer service is also sold to you as something unique and special.
Its a bloody blue button with a pre-programmed phone number behind it. WOW. BUT it's blue and it has a spanner printed on it.
A bit like the Spanners who will bought them.
Interior now looks cheap and tacky but the engine still sounds like thunder
All these state of art facilities and only one championship (WDC and WCC apiece) since 1999......

The SL65 AMG Black Series made in Germany 🇩🇪 is better, cooler and faster. But love the SLR.
It's cost 20 grand just to change the spark plugs because you have take out the half of engine out
I do like that car very much but to see it being driven like it's stolen is not a happy sight.
It s better to buy E55 amg for 15k
For 337k I would expect the interior to be more than plastic it all seems a bit cheap

This car is awesome, but back in 2005, I'd have rather had a Ferrari Enzo, Maserati MC12, Porsche Carrera GT, and Ford GT. Mercedes lost this hypercar generation.
True, but the SLR was like a gt car with hypercar performance. It was more practical than all those cars, and almost just as fast. It was actually on par with the Carrera GT. The Porsche was also said to be very difficult to drive at the limit whereas the SLR was far more effortless
And Zonda C12S of course.

SLR is that exciting Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde unike BMW 6/8-series that never reached to become such crazy entertaining split personality per recipe take 50% of Merc CL+ 50% of Dodge Viper and leave it with British saying that Borussia Dortmund is better than Manchester United….. because Munich guys did not dare going to experts like Merc went to McLaren for confrontation that based on SLR success later inspired AMG how to make further Merc super-cars…. SLR is one of those 1-occurrence miracles like Lex LFA was and never ever can happen again….
This was my dream car when I was 14, but looking at it now hasn't aged the best and the SLRs interior looks just awfull and doesnt look 350k at all 😳

It's not aged well like enzo and carrera gt but still gorgeous, maybe I'm biased since it's my childhood dreamcar too.
I think the interior is fine (Enzo's interior is really bare Carbon and nothing in it, Carrera GT was as good as this).
These SLRs were offered with a white interior which is much better imo (keeps it fresh). Most of these came with red interiors.
Kinda lackluster interior design for such a car and brand.
