I think the issue with earthspark is that it’s stuck on a platform no-one uses. I mean, the biggest attention it got was a tweet with 13k likes with the scene of Meg’s piledriving novastorm with his cannon. The show needs to focus more on its action and it’s bots than it’s humans to get more attention.
There’s still a whole 2nd half of the 1st season to be released and all the other toys they’re yet to reveal. At this rate they just need to drip-feed or drop the last 16 episodes, more of the toys, go harder with the marketing and hope it works out cus hasbro’s really banking on earthspark and rise of the beasts doing a lot of the heavy lifting for what’s likely to be an economically disastrous 2023.
Heck, that’s not even talking about RoTB’s potential to flop with it having to make at least 500 million in the box office to turn a profit with a cast who’s only really notable draw-in actors are Peter Dinklage, Ron Perlman and Anthony Ramos. I think it looks good for the most part but it’s trailer is being beaten by Guardians of the Galaxy 3 at the moment. Transformers in 2023 has a lot riding on its shoulders, not only just the franchise’s own fate but if both earthspark and RoTB fail then it could cripple Hasbro for years to come.

    • @conjo8884
      @conjo8884 Před rokem +7

It's not quite that simple, effective solutions are simply out of the hands of social media personalities. on a personal anecdote, I haven't heard of the new transformers show until I saw a snippet on discord because I'm just not a demographic that can be reached via these methods. Mainly because I don't want to be; I go out of the way to keep my youtube feed to be interests and not advertisements, and I refuse to touch twitter with a 10 foot pole. The point of me saying this is that there is an upper limit of social media reach if the goal is to get people to watch a program if they don't commit to a level of outreach that people would pay marketing firms to do.
but the bigger problem is that many if not all of these animations are tied to an exclusive platform. Between other interests I put money into, I do not have the money to maintain every possible streaming service that has any given animation content I may or may not be interested in. and I do not want to dedicate time to schedule subscriptions when it can be spent in more engaging interests. And this has been a problem going for years, too much content is in the form of a greater subscription that any one work is inherently devalued. Cause in the grand scheme of things, 20$ for a season of an animation isn't a bad purchase. but 20$ a month for netflix for example devalues the worth I would have for, say, cyberpunk. since I'm not valuing it for the one show, I'm putting everything else to value, as it will seem like a waste if I don't use it for anything else, as I only have access to the one show I like for so long. It's not a mindset we can avoid, especially when money's tight for people these days.
any real solutions that can salvage the situation would have to involve a solution similar to what itunes did to music or steam did to gaming. But that requires a Steve Jobs or Gabe Newell to enter the animation and movie distribution market.

Despite not being a gamer myself, (not a hard core one at least,) I am beyond fascinated by how indie games have become so popular they are now standing shoulder to shoulder with AAA!
And regardless of what you may think of the creator, Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss both proved that animation can and DOES have the ability to be both indie and successful!
I seriously believe, that in contrast to the industry, we might finally be entering a golden age of INDIE animation!
It’s still too early to tell, but with projects like BoxTown, (still being worked on) Monkey Wrench, (pilot episode out on Newgrounds and here on YT. and Interface, (full completed series out on Newgrounds and YT!) among many others I’ve heard are in the works, I feel we might be seeing more and more creators going indie, and more fully realized projects being able to see the light of day!!!
I know it’s all easier said than done, and an animated series and games aren’t exactly the same thing, even if they are similar on the surface.

It's been a dark year for animation, but I still would not say that we are in a new dark age of animation. There's still a good amount of animation coming out and that has come out, which shows and will show that while there are those that look down on animation "because it's for kids", there are still those pieces of animation that are showing and do show what can be done, when animation is respected. In no particular order (with shows and movies):
"Puss n Boots: The Last Wish", "Hilda (with season 3 coming)", "Nomina", "Spiderverse 2", "Arcane" (especially with season 2 coming)", Pixar's Fire and Ice, Pantheon, Disney's "Wish", "Moongirl and the Devil Dinosaur on Disney Plus", "Guillermo Del Toro's Pinochio on Netflix", "Redwood", "Dragon Age Absolution", "Amphibia","My Dad the Bounty Hunter", "Craig and the Creek movie", "Pantheon", Castlevania Nocturne, "Unicorn Warriors Eternal", "Sonic Prime", "Carmen Sandiego", "Kipo and Age of Wonderbeasts", Invincible season 2, The Sea Beast, Entergalactic, Monkie Kid season 4, Batman Caped Crusader, etc. Of course, there are still major issues that happened this year, but I also feel like these examples, show that even when there are those that try and sabotage animation, there will always be those that step up and be a light to the animation industry. Bob Igor's return to Disney is a great example of this.

I don't think that Rise of the TMNT: The Movie was made entirely due to fan outcry, in fact I think it was announced during Season 1 of the show alongside the renewal for a second season (which was before the show had finished Season 1).
Though according to a Twitch stream by the crew Nickelodeon apparently constantly gave conflicting ideas for what they wanted the show to be, such as the crew wanting to do a series largely composed of standalones, but Nick wanted an overarching plot (I think Nick might have been right about this one, to be honest; I thought the overarching plot was surprisingly good), along with a toy focus. The toys not selling that well resulted in the second season's 26-episode order being cut down significantly, and the crew were told to write up a five-part series finale in six weeks.
Apparently Season 2 and The Movie were largely developed at the same time; when the crew found out they got cancelled, they ultimately decided to make the villains of Season 3 (The Krang) the villains of The Movie instead, though said if the movie did well enough the show might continue, which I'm pretty sure isn't happening at this juncture due to Ant Ward and Andy Suriano, two of the series' principle creators, having apparently moved on (the former is working on Transformers: Earthspark, actually).

When it comes to industry animation, I totally see where you are coming from. And everything you said is nearly spot on to my sentiments too! I hope Tv and streaming animation doesn’t go down this dark path, or doesn’t stay there for long. But as is always the case, things will get worse (and probably, in this case, destroyed completely with no way to fix it) before any kind of light is even faintly seen at the end of whatever this endless tunnel of heck is.
That all being said…I do believe that there IS hope for animation…but at least for the foreseeable future, it is not on any TV or streaming network…(unless new ones are made separate from the big studios)
    It is online, independent animation!!!
While networks are nosediving beyond the event horizon, a BUNCH of awesome independent creators and creator ran studios are putting out pilots for COMPLETELY ORIGINAL, CREATOR OWNED PROJECTS all on CZcams AND NEWGROUNDS!!! And if that’s not enough, an independent animation collective called Bandit Mill Animation, run by veterans and newbies from the animation industry, are currently working to make their very very first adult animated series called “BoxTown!” And they are crowdfunding the project as well as funding it themselves, and they are also dedicated to treating their crew fairly! Plus, as someone who hangs out in their discord server, they all seem pretty cool! There’s also plenty of other projects being created and promoted on Newgrounds, like I mentioned before!
So, what I’m saying is, I understand how you feel regarding industry animation! And while canceling subscriptions, watching original content, and even promoting creators you admire and who need help on your social accounts, the fact we can’t really help in any big, immediate, impactful way, just rubs salt in the wound! (Not that doing any of the things I mentioned doesn’t help. It just sucks that we can’t do more than that.)
    But…
While the industry may look bleak, and looks to be getting bleaker,
The internet, and online independent creators seem to be thriving! Granted, due to the nature of being independent, you have to actively search out these projects, due to all advertising relying on the crew, and word of mouth, as getting anything advertised on a large scale requires a lot of additional money, among other possible things. Not to mention that if you are on one of the big main platforms (especially YT) you are basically subject to whatever the platform and company does or doesn’t do. And you aren’t always guaranteed success in any way. Heck, the platform may not even promote you depending on how it works, YT or otherwise!
But imo, as an animator myself, I am going to be trying to go the fully independent route!!! I’m still open to work for Netflix if and when this storm lightens up, but until then, I’m sticking to Newgrounds, as well as my own website…once I have it up…😅

Surprised fandoms was not brought up as part of the issues. Okay it is not as much of an issue these days but it seemed several shows (heck properties in general) got their success ruined because older fans dismissed changes in favor of things that appealed to their nostalgia, until they realized they actually liked it and by then it is far too late. Rise of the TMNT greatly suffered from this. In fact the general fatigue of shows that were comedic in nature lead to a massive dislike wave that disliked any comedic shows whether it be for good reasons or bad. I feel like Harvey Beaks was one of the more innocent casualties of the dislike wave at the time. Heck maybe OK KO also suffered from this at first. While the dislike wave may not contribute much to the current issue, I feel like we have a duty to protect shows that are good by treating them with respect, regardless of their genre, less they be another causality.

@@DrLockdown Definitely it is about the corporations, and fans do have lesser power. However I thought it was worth mentioning the viewer side of things, since in at least in the case of Rise of the TMNT, I think it was screwed as much from the "oh its different" plague of some fans as much as Nick's poor judgment when the show finally got decent numbers. If the numbers were decent from the start it probably would have lasted as long as other incarnations of the property. And in a way the viewers are just as responsible with animation's fate as the companies. The live action Disney reboots may be panned but they get decent numbers which justify their continued existence even thought people don't like them. If people stopped watching maybe companies would change, since they listen less to reason and more so emptying money vaults. Though to be fair, that does lead to its own complex downwards spiral about why people watch things, and what are the correct tactics to discourage people from watching it (since we know directions like the Anti Gen 8dom did not work at all). So, you did quite a good job with the topic as it is.

There are things I want to say. You may disagree with them and I'm open to criticism, but just hear me out. I have had a lot of this stuff on my mind for years, and with me engaging on the internet more, I finally want to talk about this stuff.
I am an early 2000's boomer. I personally think the golden age of cartoons ended in 2008. Yes I am incredibly nostalgic, but one can notice that shows have changed since. Shows like Adventure Time and Regular Show are not the masterpieces everyone thinks they are, and led to the creation of the muck which has aired since.
Here's an important thing I've noticed. Around the turn of the decade, people started thinking, "hey, let's make cartoons more complex. Let's give them overarching story and mature themes." This is great (mature complex stories are awesome, IF DONE WELL), except one problem: most of these shows failed in execution, and everybody jumped on the complex train. As such, this led to a rise in "pseudo-complex" shows, which I think most cartoons today (especially the ones people acclaim so much) are. Instead of being complex, they are convoluted. And in their attempts, have become dull. In becoming dull, they have forgotten how to be entertaining. Mature and complex is entertaining, but dull and convoluted isn't.
For example: the finale to Adventure Time does not count as good storytelling. They just made it at the end and said "hey let's make this the explanation for everything that's happened". Bruh, you literally made it up as you went along. That shit doesn't count.
The best analogy I can give is Avatar vs Korra (I don't like Korra, but hear me out)
While some would see Avatar as childish, it has plenty of mature themes in it and has a complex yet concrete and well-fitting structure. Korra attempted to out-mature Avatar, and as a result seems dull.
Chronologically speaking, the last cartoon I like is RWBY (2013). And you know what happened to that show? It's creator died, they kept it going, and corporate greed is the only thing driving it.
But to relate to your "new dark age", corporations are in fact not caring about animation anymore. Part of me thinks that they jumped on the "pseudo-complex" train, and are either abandoning it because of low revenue or are milking pre-existing acclaimed shows dry
One final thing: my absolute favorite film is Pacific Rim. I think it's a well-made film with aspects which makes it unique. They were going to turn it into an entire multimedia franchise, but then Guillermo del Toro (director) left to make the Shape of Water, and while he was kissing his best picture award, the franchise was left to rot, and we got the dumpster fire that is Uprising. The Black is probably the one Netflix show I have ever been excited for, and while not horrible, it wasn't amazing either. It will never hold a candle to what Pacific Rim could have been, but it had so much potential that wasn't developed. A unique film which could have paved the way for a unique franchise, ripped away and left to rot.

And a bonus point, one of the biggest manga authors in Shonen, Tite Kubo, is getting a second chance to tell the story he couldn't beforehand due to a crippling injury, Bleach's return with the Thousand Year Blood War Anime adaptation is still getting quite a big push, even having some promos with Coca-Cola, now, say what you will about the arc in the manga, but I call this a great win for creatives everywhere, and Kubo is even hands on with this adaptation more so than he was in the past

it is really annoying hearing how all this stuff is happening and how these companies don't have any brain cells for the fans or creators and only for those dollar signs, here's how I think is the best way to fight this, Indie Projects and Fanfiction. With Indie Projects the power is directly in the hands of the creators so they don't have to worry about their stuff being canceled and they can rely on the fanbases of their projects for support as long as they gain that following, as for the other, Fanfiction, for projects that have been canceled or been disregarded by companies in other ways fans and the original creators can still work on those projects or make what they envision/ed them to be, an example I would like to use is Sonic SatAM Season 3, that was caned a looooooong time ago until the fans got together with the original creators of the show themselves with the script bible for Season 3 and are currently (as of this time I write this) working on bring the final season to life. So in my opinion, if you don't like the new stuff then stop watching it and let these companies either realize their mistakes OR be left in the dust so that the stuff we want to see can be made without corporate interference and be made by the fans and creators themselves, support them.

I think almost of this is just a result of executives not understanding the products they are putting out. Shows with genuine potential from a critical standpoint would be promoted far more of these show-runners actually looked at these animations through the same critical lens as live-action. Shows like Thundercats Roar would never made it past the very early stages of production, as even a cursory glance at it would reveal its lack of potential given that there are so many alternatives that do the exact same thing. Shows like Infinity Train would have had a better go of it for similar reasons, though with opposite conclusions. If there is any silver lining, it’s that this indifference to animation shown by execs will cause and has caused companies to hemorrhage money, as their investments in bad shows don’t pay off. As animation becomes a more respected form of media, and audience expectations rise, this phenomenon will only increase exponentially, forcing studios to actually fix these issues as to keep their doors open.

He never kills megatron on the millions of chances he had because, besides what megatron have turned out, he still consider him a brother. He is weaker than megatron as you see in every fight scene between they, but he never gives up. WFC optimus, at least for me, is the PERFECT hero.

The fate of Infinity Train still upsets me. It was a fantastic show, but because of the idiocy of Warner, it was cancelled. These rich old men only care about money but fail to see why animated shows like Infinity Train are popular and instead of capitalising on said popularity, they just discard it. In their eyes, animation is just "useless children entertainment" and not worth the effort. This short sighted thinking will ruin animation.

Great video, Doctor Lockdown. I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Western animation is heading down a downward spiral, nothing can be saved. But i dont believe the same thing will happen to anime. Unlike cartoons, there still alot of very great anime still being produced, the quality as a whole isnt being affected. I have notice that you left out any mention of anime quality dipping but did say modern shows are bpring and terrible. Great new anime is still being producing and adapted, there are a lot of upcoming projects i am looking forward to. As a famous animetuber once said, anime is more popular and exciting than ever, we are entering a new golden age of anime.

This is why anime is so popular almost everywhere instead of western animation. We are missing what great stories are, as well as how well they are presented. Not everything needs to have political agendas injected into it (yes, looking at you Owl House, Loud House, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Voltron: Legendary Defender, etc.). We have forgotten that entertainment doesn't have to be too simple or too complicated or complex to understand. Some of the best shows are what can be told from a visual standpoint while keeping it sweet and neat, while having an asthetic to it (Samurai Jack and Prince of Egypt, for example). Some shows have a lot of action and story presented, while having a small run-time (Rankin/Bass' The Hobbit and The Return of of the King). Some shows can have inconsistencies that can be entertaining to watch (the 1980s Transformers series). We can tell westerner type stories with pleasing animation and have proven that with some low quality, low budget animations on CZcams. But due to the lack of creativity in Hollywood and in these mega corporate entities that have complete media control in that medium, none of them can move out of what they do on third party sites.
We need to change this and get creatives in that can do what they wish to do, with the passions and talent they all have. No politics. No compromise. And no more of these crap shows that keep suiciding to oblivion and obscurity before they get completed.
