Funny enough, there was a planned sequel to Forrest Gump that involved him accidentally stopping a hijacking. That script was greenlit on, I kid you not, September 10th, 2001. Needless to say, everyone involved completely scrapped that project within a few days.

The original would not have had anything as dark as Forrest being a part of the Capital Riot or being the mechanic on the OceanGate sub or on the Alaska Airlines flight.
The George Floyd protest bit though is in character with the original movie (because he ended up inadvertently invited to a Black Panther Party meeting), although I'm not sure with the original book (you see it was a book first).
