  • Darian and myself go on adventure to Catch, Clean and cook a very underrated fish. The Gar is not often pursued as a game fish let alone as table fare. I show how we find these prehistoric fish, what we do to catch them, how I cleaned them as well as prepared them to be cooked. Gar was by far the best fish I have ever eaten and like I said so underrated and often see as a trash fish. ENJOY!
In my videos I target trophy game fish species from all across Canada. Focusing in Quebec and Ontario, fishing from the boat, on the Ice as well as days on the bank in the most secluded to the most Urban spots Canada has to offer. Last time I tried to land a gar like Darian does, my left arm looked like a cheese grater sliced it after the gar slashed his head and his mouth hit my arm. I use a fish glove now when I grab them. Cool video

You won’t be disappointed the only advice I have is try and catch them in the colder warmer and not so much in the dog days of summer. Meat may not be as good in that super warm water

Should try a rotary tool like a Dremel next time instead of kitchen shears. Scientists use rotary tools to do surgeries on gar (for inserting transmitters) instead of scalpels! Their ganoid scales are some tough

I've had gar a couple of times before. Definitely the best fish I've ever eaten. People sleep on this fish and have so many misconceptions about it. The good thing is that they are very easy to catch, and you get a large yield of meat from them. Yes, getting to the meat is work, but it is worth it. One big gar is a meal to feed a family. I want to catch a large longnose that is very fat and see how much meat comes off of it. *Sigh* One day it'll happen.

I tend to release the bigger gar over mid forty inch. Those mature fish are the breeders with good genetics. I find the mid size fish the best eating by far. Definitely the best eating fish I’ve ever had.

Was this in May. I found out nice the start spawning they won’t chase anything other than eachother.

Yes this was May. May is a great time to target them as long as you are not in the spawning pods. Prespawn and post spawn are both amazing times to fish for them.

I catch them with frayed sash cord - no hooks

Wow, the gators eat them down here. They are considered catch and release.
