I'm playing through Halo Infinite, Resident Evil 8, and Forza Horizon 5 right now after finally getting a Series X. I haven't had this much fun gaming since the Dreamcast launch.
Man 2021 has been great a year for Microsoft in what has been a crappy year for AAA gaming. Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Psychonauts 2, all on the Game Pass from freaking day 1.
Lost Judgement, Tales of Arise, Psychonauts 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy without a doubt are on the list. It's been a few years since Story Games have captivated me like this year. So this year actually turned out pretty good for Games.
It makes me happy to see Ratchet and Clank make it so high on your list. I absolutely loved that game from start to finish. It truly was like a playable Pixar movie. God I can't talk enough about how much I loved that game.
I have been watching your videos since 2014, your game reviews are so entertaining. It's sad seeing you uploading less game reviews nowadays. nice video and keep up the hard work. It will pay off.
Returnal is such a great game. Reminded me of Dead Cells. It’s one of those games that the longer you play it, the more you get to understand it and improve your gameplay. I hope there’s future content for this game!
Yeah, it's a roguelite but the progression isn't THAT major. You don't get stat buffs, just some relatively minor unlocks for weapons and the ether currency. You do unlock new weapons, but they're not necessarily better than the original 3 weapons they're just different. You're not that much more powerful after 20 runs than you are on your first run. You're mostly just gaining experience and practice. I love that aspect. It's so much fun.
Even better would be if we could see a GOTY discussion between the guys where they discuss their top 5 and why they thought so and maybe end with a site list.
I really loved Kena: Bridge of Spirits, I'm glad you loved it too, Joe! And for those bloodthirsty for pain, Kena has that too on higher end difficulties. It is stupid hard at times on high difficulties. But if I had to give my personal game of the year to a game, I'd say Scarlet Nexus. I loved it and I haven't even played through it with the 2nd Protagonist yet!
I've just completed Guardians of the Galaxy and I can completely see why it won best narrative at this years game awards. I think many people had written it off based on the trailers. I myself did. After giving it a go I would definitely put it in my top 10. I think people should give it a go. The story is fantastic, the team dynamic is brilliant. I would go so far as to say that by the end of the game, I much prefer this team than the ones in the movie. Please Joe give Guardians a chance.
I am not that fond of the movies, and gave it a chance only because of the award. And it is true, it is incredibly well written, for the first time in my entire life I could believe that the Guardian characters where actually people, and they feel like actual friends. Each of them feel very deep and complex, and the jokes are never at the expense of character and or story. And if that wasn't enough, there were several moments that made laugh louder than any Marvel movie ever could. The gameplay could have been better, but it is not bad. Easily the game I enjoyed the most from 2021, I wouldn't say it is the best. But it is easily the one I enjoyed the most, by a lot.
But it should not have won best narrative. That award should have gone to LIS True Colors. Psychonauts 2 and The Forgotten City also excel there as well.
Yeah I loved guardians of the galaxy. Easily one of the best stories in a video game in years. Very emotional and heartfelt and this team felt distinct from the films.
@@farrex0 And that ost? I was legit searching other albums by Star Lord after hearing From zero to hero and Space Riders with no names only to find it was a fictional band created just for the game and made up from members of the dev team.
There might be a bit of "right game at the right time" going on with Guardian of the Galaxy. The story really sucked me in, but I can understand that a "overcoming grief, trauma and fear of parenthood" topic isn't to everyone's taste.
It was amazing. I would have hoped for more content, but on the other hand, there was very little filler (apart from the cute hats, and let's be real here, that's NOT filler!). From the moment I saw the first trailer, I loved it.
I had high hopes as well, and while I got something else than I thought, I absolutely loved what I DID get. The trailers sold it as this Pixar like game with next gen graphics, when in reality the cutscenes were Pixar like, and the game itself was just a really good PS2 level action platformer.
im old ... i dont play roguelike .... im not even sure what it is ... how does it work ? when you die you start all the game ? is there a end to the game ?
@@matthieumartelct If you're new to roguelikes I'd suggest you play Hades first. It is super accessible with a lot of charm. The game is the best roguelike out there. Roguelike is a genre where, if you die in the game, you need to play from the beginning again. It might sound tedious and repetitive, but it's not. The things is every time you die, you unlock new mechanics/weapons and the game layout and enemies change each time. This makes sure that each time you play the game it feels different. There is an end to the game, when you are able to beat it without dying once. I'd stongly suggest checking out Hades. You'll find a lot to love there
@@gondalasatvarsh5892 I found hades very exciting until I beat the game the first time…there’s work involved getting there but then I got bored going through runs after that …I am thinking returnal is one of those difficulty porn games that mostly only masochists enjoy ..sekiro and that studios other games ..get good they say 🙄

Always love seeing your lists. They do allow me to discover games I may have missed or let me know what games to avoid. My GotY 2021 was Metroid Dread. As a fan of the series I felt like we hadn't received a proper Metroid in ages. Other M was a misstep and Federation Force was just exploiting the Prime name. Samus Returns was a decent remake. But Dread is the first new Metroid in 20 years and it hit it out of the park imo. Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise this year and it actually ended up being a very enjoyable game after the disaster of the Avengers.
Do you know if Joe played Metroid Dread? That game is my GOTY of 2021 as well. Without being biased to the series, Metroid Dread is a breath of fresh air when first-person shooters are still the hottest trend for years.
@@kenterminateddq5311 I do not. I had asked them in a Q&A donating some money to them. But I think they missed the donation because of the way CZcams is. I think Joe might like it considering how influential Alian was on the series.

SO refreshing to see Joe excited about games from last year. Really a big let down overall this year, but there are always gems hidden away from the mainstream!
I dont have the time to play as many games as when I was younger so I missed out on a lot on this list, but my fav in 2021 was Metroid Dread. Fantastic game that just feels so damn good to play
I totally expect this game to get passsed on by many players. It just doesn't sell itself to most gamers. I bet it's great once you try it though, but most gamers wont try it I think. Games are expensive so we often go for the sure thing. Well I am proud that a Swede made a game that was rated this high.
So glad to see Kena, Ratchet & Clank and Returnal on here. My personal favorite GOTY was Hitman 3 and Chivalry II. The year 2021 ended off great with FFXIV: Endwalker ✊️
Joe didn’t even finish the first 6 entries, Hell, he didn’t even play Forza. How is this his 10 best of the year? He didn’t even finish 10 games last year. I felt that most of this year’s focus went to his news videos, movie reviews, and of course, GFeul advertising. This “show” just isn’t what it used to be. It being a “down” year is not an excuse to lower standards for quality content.
Thank you for putting Ratchet and Clank on here, I felt like so many people forgotten about the game when it's a must-have on next-gen console(If you can get one lol). Incredible game and series. Thank you Joe.
The Forgotten City was my personal GOTY. Absolutely incredible narrative design that I would be impressed seeing from a big budget title, but the fact that it started off as a skyrim mod, and was made by a handful of people has blown me away

@@ej1025 I have a lot of issues with it... Attempting a "co-op" usually only ends with an infinite load screen. The AI is so-openly-broken that your throttle directly controls every single AI car - simultaneously. Seriously, it's worse than Mario Kart. You can pass the AI on a straight, while not pressing the gas - at all. BUT When you try to go through a corner, and inevitably have to accelerate... the moment you press the gas, they get that + 20% Which works for them, because no AI is - IN ANY MEASURABLE WAY - effected by lateral G's. This is why if you side swipe them, you literally ricochet... If they sideswipe you - it damn-near turns into goat simulator. The only way to pass them is to push your car to past 85% of it's maximum acceleration, through any corner or obstacle, while making 0 mistakes for 30 - 90 seconds ( scales based on race length ) at which point they will ARBITRARILY slow down, and let you pass... That + 20% boost they get, inverts - in a desperate attempt to trick the player into believing that they, actually, accomplished something. Which, may not be terrible - if it weren't for the fact that every course is purposely built with indestructible obstacles just past the apex of every 4th corner. Then there's the part about having to pay them, for the "privilege" of fast travel... So you can get to multiplayer events before they begin... @@iro6758 I agree completely, this could be a much better game. I really don't like the interface that much either. Slow, clunky, and hard to navigate especially for a newbie. The auctions suck too, bids constantly fail to go through. Also, some of the spoilers are broken or just plain don't work.... Hennessy Venom GT is one example. Missing quite a bit, I'm aware, but I'm not a series regular. I've only had a handful of time with FH3/FM5. Horizon 5 is my first major one.
Ratchet and clank was so good, never played one before and instantly regretted it after finishing it. it reminded me of the classic ps1 games like spyro crash etc, easily one of my top games this year
1. Residential Evil Village 2. Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart 3. Marvel's Guardian of the Galaxy 4. Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker 5. Tales of Aries 6. Halo Infinite 7. Far Cry 6 8. Lost Judgment 9. Dark Pictures Anthology House of Ashes 10. Kena Bridge of Spirits
Great list! Inscryption was amazing and a big surprise for me this past year. For me, I'd say my GOTY was Psychonauts 2. As a huge fan of the first game, the sequel delivered everything you could want from a sequel: A good story that continues right after the first one, beautiful graphics and sound, and gameplay that improves on the original in almost every way. It's also funny as hell as you would expect from Double Fine. Looking forward to the rest of your lists!
Yeah psychonauts definitely deserved to be on here. I was honestly surprised halo infinite made the list let alone number 2. As a halo fan it has the best core gameplay of the series and arguably the worst story with boring open world gameplay.
Makes me sad that i didn't get the ps5 last year and play those amazing PlayStation's exclusives, but i got me a Series X and i get to play tons of Xbox exclusives that i missed because i don't own Xbox One. Sunset Paradise, Forza Horizon 4, Forza Horizon 5, Halo: Infinite, Ori, and Psychonauts 2 are definitely the highlights for me.
Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous for me, such a good RPG for those of us that like to sink hundreds of hours into a playthrough and do it all again to see what another build and other choices do!
Kena was my favorite game last year, it reminded me of older games in a good way. I didn't expect it to be as hard as it is though. When I started the game I played on hard because I thought it would be similar to games like Ratchet & Clank or Spyro, not Pixar Souls lol.
Disagree on Psychonauts 2 a bit - I could see it being within my own top 10, but it's far from a perfect game, even by Psychonauts standards. Lots of dialogue in it feels a tad unfinished with numerous instances of character cast bloat - which is sad to see considering the wonderful marvel the first game was. Gameplay was pretty solid though.
It Takes Two is PERFECT as the number 1 top games :D My sister and I played this and we both loved this game SO SO much! Super fun, and plenty of good laughs, and love how interactive the environments are. Again, GREAT choice for the number 1 spot. It deserves it there ❤
And to play "It Takes Two" solo, need to know a few tricks, without them it's near impossible to beat, also being able to control 2 gamepads at once helps.
Gardians of the Galaxy, I was so surprised with how touching the story turn out to be. And the game looked amazing on my PC with ray tracing. Its my game of the year for sure!
The one game, of these games you don't expect anything of, I wouldn't have minded exploring and grinding abit more, was fun but short and not very deep progression or story wise
@@andyhull9182 it took me about 30 hours to complete. In no way was it a short game my dude. And the store was very deep and touching. It actually reminded me a lot of Mass effects 2 in that way.
Mine would be Valheim, the game was a massive hit at release with little to no bugs for an early access title, it's a shame it has been pretty much forgotten since it's slow progress with updates.
I love watching this annual series. Thank you Joe for delivering consistently. On this list I've played only 3 games: RE8, RE4 VR, and Forza Horizon 5. All of them are amazing. I can't believe how well my aging PC handles RE8 and FH5. The visuals and performance are top notch!
Love seeing the best list, because it always shows that we got some good things in the year. Personally, my favorites were Monster Hunter Rise and Metroid Dread.
I just watched this back to back with Yathzee's top fives, and it's weird to see two of the games on his "Blandest" list show up on Joe's top ten. It really shows a difference in perspective as, for example, Yathzee is admittedly completely burned out on open world games (hence why he didn't like Kena) because he has a weekly schedule and he has to play way more games than Joe, while also tacitly avoiding certain genres, like the sports and driving games Joe seems to enjoy. Just shows that it's best to listen to multiple different reviewers if you want to get a clear picture on a medium. Now, off to wait for the 10 worst games, as those videos are always much more entertaining.
@@FiLtheThriL Of course he does, but not as many as Yathzee, and not on a tight weekly schedule. It's why Yathzee has a wider perspective on the trends of the medium, but can have some weird hot-takes and gets easily burned out on certain genres, while Joe plays fewer games for his job, but can spend more time on each one of them, and because of this, his views are more subjective but less prone to genre fatigue.
@@Horvath_Gabor quality over shit take quantity any day. Joe actually reviews games for people that want to play through the games. Kena (bridge of spirits) was a great game. It looks innocent and cute but it had some amazing combat and pretty difficult boss fights; especially on harder difficulties. Plus, the music was amazing. Also, Hitman 3 was definitely on my list this year.

I feel like Metroid Dread and Psychonauts 2 should have been up there but a good list nonetheless.
Haven't played Psychonauts 2 but Metroid Dread was an absolute masterpiece.

Lost Judgement, Tales of Arise, Psychonauts 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy without a doubt are on the list.
It's been a few years since Story Games have captivated me like this year. So this year actually turned out pretty good for Games.
343 Seeing Halo Infinite at Number 2 on this list:
“We Were THIS Close.”
It makes me happy to see Ratchet and Clank make it so high on your list. I absolutely loved that game from start to finish. It truly was like a playable Pixar movie. God I can't talk enough about how much I loved that game.
Best animations for an "Pixar-like" game. Insomniac are damn good developers. So excited for Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine.
Ratchet and Returnal were my favourite this year and I'm no Sony fanboy they just stood out to me
Absolutely! Amazing to see this game on the list after all the stupid backlash from Twitter
I was surprised too. It's kind of a platformer and that's not usually Joe's thing. Did he even play Crash Bandicoot 4?
I have been watching your videos since 2014, your game reviews are so entertaining. It's sad seeing you uploading less game reviews nowadays. nice video and keep up the hard work. It will pay off.
Returnal is such a great game. Reminded me of Dead Cells. It’s one of those games that the longer you play it, the more you get to understand it and improve your gameplay. I hope there’s future content for this game!
The main character is not customizable, un sexy and ugly. Else should have tried.
What about Hades? How’s that?
Angry Joe: Likes Returnal
Angry Joe: Hates Dark Souls
Yeah, it's a roguelite but the progression isn't THAT major. You don't get stat buffs, just some relatively minor unlocks for weapons and the ether currency. You do unlock new weapons, but they're not necessarily better than the original 3 weapons they're just different. You're not that much more powerful after 20 runs than you are on your first run. You're mostly just gaining experience and practice. I love that aspect. It's so much fun.
That game story is so confusing
I really wish Alex and OJ could make a list of their own. At least a top 3 or something.
That would be great! Always nice to hear everyones opinions on the show and get a different perspective.
Even better would be if we could see a GOTY discussion between the guys where they discuss their top 5 and why they thought so and maybe end with a site list.
Top 5 Bad Movies? Or do they already have that list?
That'd be a great idea, it's not the OJ Show though.
OJs List would consist of Zombie Games only. XD
Valheim deserved to be on this list! Can't believe you guys haven't played it!

Glad to see these smaller games get some love, especially with AAA gaming getting worse and worse every year.

@@tetralesca forget your meds again? 😳😳
I’ve watched this every year since you’ve started and it never disappoints

Regardless of having the best or worst time of your life, watching Joe's top 10 always brings me a simile.
Guardians of the Galaxy was probably my favorite. Yeah the gameplay wasn’t amazing, but the story, dialogue, visuals and music make up for it.
I thought Guardians was a pleasant surprise. Really enjoyed it.
There might be a bit of "right game at the right time" going on with Guardian of the Galaxy. The story really sucked me in, but I can understand that a "overcoming grief, trauma and fear of parenthood" topic isn't to everyone's taste.
@@tartiflette6428 Could be but yeah I enjoyed the story. Especially the dynamic between the team itself. :)
Having very little time to play games nowadays, I realy appreciate these videos. They keep me somewhat in the loop :) Keep it up team Agry Joe :)
I absolutely loved Kena: Bridge of Spirits. I had high hopes and it didn’t disappoint. So happy it made it into the list
Returnal is my personal game of the year tbh. I really loved the way they weaved a space horror narrative in a compelling roguelike game.
im old ... i dont play roguelike .... im not even sure what it is ... how does it work ? when you die you start all the game ? is there a end to the game ?

Easily top 3 for anyone who did play it.

Seriously, it's worse than Mario Kart.
You can pass the AI on a straight, while not pressing the gas - at all.
BUT
When you try to go through a corner, and inevitably have to accelerate... the moment you press the gas, they get that + 20%
Which works for them, because no AI is - IN ANY MEASURABLE WAY - effected by lateral G's.
With the car you intended, and without your hands already being tired...

There's plenty to nitpick about, but 343's best game ever. Halo 4 had good big battles but crappy enemies... it's always good and bad. Also no Warthog ending like most games...
@@deni6085 really? Bad villian constantly complaining side kick and repetitive mission objectives the campaign while the gameplay is fantastic the story was bad for me
@---- The Rotten One ---- 😈 yes i agree but if wee had to pay 60 bucks for and we got this bare bones of a game i would've raged lol
It Takes Two played by Connor and Ironmouse was a f***ing REVELATION! It sold me completely on the game!
there were a lot of games i enjoyed this year, but top indie was valheim (even though it's still in early access) and top overall was metroid dread. most fun i've had all year and a true return to form for metroid
I don’t think these people even play nitendo games
Good to see a Halo game with such positivity surrounding it again.
Nice list of games, Joe, I agree. My favorite, previous year game! It’s It Takes Two, of course.
Great to see some indie games make the list, more indie recommendations please!
