How can the male bird know how he looks? How does he know what movements to make so that to showcase the irridescent colours in such a perfect illusion? They copy from elders, ok. But initially, how did the very first bird know what movements to perform in such a brilliant manner?

some individual did something that caused him to be more successful at perpetuating his genes on to the next generation then what ever some other individuals were doing. this trend continued for a few more generations and the genes of the individual who was tending to doing the more successful moves became more common in the population, and those actions became ingrained with the population. later descendants made certain adjustments to the moves, and some where better at attracting good mates and some were less so, and so on and so on, and right now we have a population of birds doing these amazing dances and finding the best mates
