MK2 VW Jetta Diesel: Giles Injection Pump Upgrade

  • This 1989 VW Jetta has a 1.6L non-turbo diesel engine. It is SLOW. Browsing the VW nerd forums, I found references to a guy named Giles who builds a more aggressive injection pump for these old diesels. My original pump was leaking so I decided to replace it with one of these performance builds. Here is the story of making a really slow car, just faster enough to be more fun.
    It is still really slow.
    Here is a link to Giles's shop: www.performancediesel.ca/
    Before taking it out for acceleration tests, we replace the axles because they were making clunking noise indicating failed CV joints.

      Right on! The difference is remarkable. I just picked up a 1986 turbo diesel. I'm very interested to compare these two after the TD is sorted. Thanks for watching.

    Hoping to get a giles pump for my 87 jetta coupe na automatic. Yup, a diesel with an 010 "TL" code automatic. Currently bone stock engine with the fuel screw turned in 1/8th turn and the cam advanced 2°. Actually fairly peppy for what it is. Going to attempt the governor mod first but pretty set on the giles pump. I've read the giles pump can add up to 20hp. Also the gti dual outlet downpipe makes a difference too. Going to port the exhaust side of the head, make a custom intake with velocity stacks. I currently get 1000kms per tank (55L). I'll be happy if I can see the 52hp bumped up to 75hp. Tq to maybe 100ft/lb? (Never see people talk about the tq number.) And 820-850kms per tank. Because it's a 3spd auto with final drive 1:1, it sits higher up in the rpms cruising on the highway at 100km/hr.(no tach so unsure of exact rpms) and I'm able to accelerate and pass people with ease at highway speeds.

      I think the Giles pump is the best upgrade you can do to these. That said, the MF code turbo diesel is light years better. It AlMOST feels as quick as the 1.8 gassers of the day. Thanks for watching

    Hello there the modified pump is very interesting, what would say, how much more PS or HP does she have and and do you think it's still as reliable as the old one (apart from the leaks)? Am I the only one where the internet site from Giles's shop is down?

    • @tr3wrench
      @tr3wrench  Před 3 lety +2

      Just checked the site performancediesel.ca/ works for me...
      So far I am very impressed with the upgrade. The pump is a Bosch VE unit with modifications to the rate of fuel delivery. It is basically a rebuilt pump, with a bit of a performance add. I don't have hard numbers but I can say the car is much closer to it's gas counterpart than before. I took about a 5 MPG hit on the fuel burn, but SOOO worth it.

    I have a 1981 Rabbit Diesel that has been in my family since new. I drove it in college, and my biggest complaint with it was the lack of power. It's interesting to see that the new pump basically shaves 4 seconds off the 0-60 times. Very impressive! How much did the pump cost?

    • @tr3wrench
      @tr3wrench  Před 2 lety +4

      I paid $1435 for the pump but that included a $350 core charge. I kept the original. I would say this is the best "speed" mod you can do to the VW NA Diesel. You do need to watch your temps. You are outside the design limits of the cooling system so you CAN overheat the car if you are running up hill on a hot day with the A/C going.

    that money buys you 2 complete TDI engines with ECU and all the accessories 😎💪. Well the engine mounts will add another 4-500 USD/EUR and I understand that the tinkering involved is another league compared to a pump swap. not to mention keeping these cars original adds to their value and charm. 👌//I also keep my mk1 NA diesel engine original and detailed to crazy levels.

      Yes Definitely! The previous owner had replaced all the seals in the pump to run a biodiesel mixture. He left detailed instructions and notes. I doubt I could have made the performance upgrade to the internals to match the Giles pump I purchased. IMHO the performance upgrade is worth the $$$.

    • @tr3wrench
      @tr3wrench  Před 2 lety

      It absolutely would. Do be careful as it will produce more power than it was designed for. You can overcome the cooling system on really hot days, running the A/C, and pulling a hill at WOT. I have a coolant sensor and second gauge for the radiator inlet side.

      I actually contacted Giles when I got into this project because I had the same concern. That "contraption" on the top is an altitude compensation device. His build deletes that. I just put a plug on the Vac generator port for that application and good to go. The performance difference with this pump is remarkable.
