- If you're a fan of Aerosmith, then this episode is for you! In this video, I’m giving a guitar lesson for Aerosmith's song, “Toys in the Attic” with special guests Michael Weber (guitar) and Al Rolik (bass). Together, we demonstrate ALL the guitar parts including the smoking guitar solo in the song.
Regarding (I never noticed this before)...While learning the song, I never noticed that they drop in a D# power chord at 1:53 right after the guitar solo! It goes by in an instant and we speculate whether it was intentional or just a happy accident in the studio!
In typical Aerosmith style, this song has several GREAT guitar riffs, all at the blazing fast tempo of 197 BPM. We also touch on the curious D# power chord that comes and goes in the blink of an eye at the end of the guitar solo. I never noticed it before!
This is a fun and educational episode that will fascinate toy enthusiasts and music lovers alike! By the way….After watching this episode, you might think I have ‘toys in MY attic’ given all the humorous Easter Eggs in this video- I bet you will watch it twice!

Toy’s in the Attic was the first Aerosmith song I had ever heard. After that I got the LP and it become the most played song I had in my collection. Many decades later and still find myself looking gravitating to it and turning it up loud!!

Wow, the guy playing the solo completely nailed Perry's phrasing, bends & tone.
Joe has a unique way of playing in the 70's, and for me, he just has that swagger
in his approach.
Micheal Weber is a phenom! Love that young man!
Some folks may forget or overlook the fact that Brad Witford was also an incredibly talented lead guitar player. Although his "role" in the band was perceived as the 2nd guitar or rhythm guitar, he could step out front and crush it when called upon. Brad Witford was a key component of the Aerosmith sound and actually made Joe Perry look good. Never overlook the quiet shy guys in a band. They are some of the best out there.

Hello. I started playing my mom's abandoned acoustic guitar (the classic scenerio: she took a couple of guitar lessons...and then quit...and there lays a lonely guitar in someone's closet FOR YEARS AND YEARS...until it is hopefully rescued).
I started noodling around on her acoustic in 1977...when I was 11...in my childhood home on the shores of Lake Fenton, Michigan.
I bought Aerosmith's "Toys In The Attic" with my Mom beside me...at a store called "Don's Drugs" in Fenton, Michigan. I vividly remember my Mom asking the long haired hippy cashier guy:
"Is there swearing on this record"? The cashier said "no".
"Is there sexual or drug references"? The cashier smiled and said"no".
So...I walked out of that drugstore smiling ear to ear with a brand new Aerosmith vinyl record in my hands.
This album KICKS ASS...PERIOD!!!
It was a HUGE part of my childhood. Our home stereo in our living room cranked out this album hundreds of times. One afternoon while I was playing this album...my Mom looked at the back cover of the record sleeve and complained about how Steven Tyler appeared to have woman's breasts as a result of the shadow created from the lighting in the room.
I'm 57 now...and I've been playing the electric ever since 1977. I grew up listening to some amazing rock albums...and Toys was definitely one of them...

Awesome job on my most favorite band in the world. I’m 63 and still listen too them as much as i did when they first came out in 1973
i wish i could listen to them today but as i get older im into 40's music......im 64 today, maybe the first 2 albums still do it and a few songs from rocks but i have to be in the mood....it pisses me off....lol
I've been playing guitar for 40 years and Aerosmith songs are some of my favorites to play. Anything from Toys, but those first four albums are full of great tunes. As for guitar solos, I haven't checked how I play the solos against the originals since I first learned them. Who cares? As long as the solo is rockin' your good in my book. Paz!

My neighbor and I used to have a rotation nonstop of Zep,Sabbath and Aerosmith on the turntable when we were kids growing up in Willoughby... It was so much fun and you guys exuded that... Wow, what a coincidence. Just this afternoon I had the urge to listen to the track No More No More from this album. I bought Toys In the Attic in 1979 when I was in 6th grade and it defines that summer for me.
That riff they play that Steven Tyler mimics the pre chorus is so odd and unique in a cool way. A joe Perry quirky cool riff

It looks like a TobaccoBurst but it does remind me of my 78 Rootbeer Brown LP Custom, a darker brown than yours and it might have been the heaviest of all guitars with the shipping weight of 25 lbs but the case ate up at least 3 lbs

You're in the ballpark on the solo. You capture it's essence well.👍🏻 Remember, Joe usually has a lot of "grease" on his sound. He'll change his tone/sound/effects sometimes multiple times in one solo.

Seen Aerosmith in 1977 in Albuquerque with Nazareth as the opening act. Aerosmith brought it that night. They pretty much played the "Toys in the Attic Album in its entirety.

As with all the other songs on Toys - Brad, Joe and the band probably did demo versions but the playing on this album was mostly done by studio musicians - the lead breaks were done by Brad and Joe.
Nah, the only time studio musicians covered for Joe Perry was on part of Get Your Wings... famously, two different guitar players, Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner played the two solo parts of Train Kept A' Rollin', because Joe was wasted and couldn't play, and Jack Douglas brought them in. They (as we all know) knocked it out of the park, but I do remember as a teenager thinking "Weird, Joe Perry never does tapping"... and it turns out I was right. 🤣
Hunter and Wagner were the only ones so far to ignore their NDA and say they did it - all the tracks on Get Your Wings were done by studio musicians except Woman of the World and Pandoras Box. Rocks sounds completely different as they had the success and power to do it themselves.
Well that’s interesting….but nevertheless, it’s still a great composition and very well played by whoever played.
Absolutely - and of course while the playing is fantastic it’s the writing that makes the song, in this case done by Aerosmith - geniuses at tapping the zeitgeist and taking blues rock to a new level.

"Lick and a Promise" is another good one.
White power propelled these sessions as did session guitarists Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner for a lot of solos on these sessions and the previous album, "Get Your Wings.". Saw the band multiple times in the mid to late 1970's and they could never muster the solos to "Walk this Way" or "Train Kept' A' Rollin'" like the studio albums.

Really? Go see the video of Train from Ponitac Silverdome in 1976 and tell me Joe can't play like the studio album. Truth be told, I have heard over 40 different live bootlegs of Aerosmith from '73-2014. I have never heard Joe or Brad play any solo the same. That is INTENTIONAL to keep them fresh and add spontinaity. In fact, that is true of Steven and Tom & Joey as well, but not as noticible. As for Walk This Way, Joe's 1st solo is almost always mostly note for note with the studio version, but he usually improvs during the verses (which is generally the opposite of most "live" versions of their other tunes where they stay fairly true on the meat of the songs, but improvise the solos). Both Brad and Joe normally "tag" thier solos the same live as cues to the rest of the band, but that improvisation is what I love about Aersomith...and why I have sought out and spent way too much money over the years on bootlegs! (Side note - I remember going to see John Mellencamp with a friend who was a big fan of his - and I love his music, too. When we left, he asked"well - what did you think, doesn't he sound just like the record? My reply was - yes...so why did we bother to come??? About 7 years later, I took my then wife to go see him again, because she was also a fan - this was when he had the violin and accordian player, ie "Cherry Bomb" - and he was great! The whole band improvised - and John even messed up a song! I loved it!
@@toddschuster570 Neither Brad nor Joe match the playing level of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter. I have seen the band countless times from 1976 - 1979 and understand the variances of live playing vs sticking to the record. Not to take anything away from Brad or Joe with my comments on it, but they are not technically as proficient of lead players as Wagner and Hunter were - they were hired guns and the solo on record for Train is one of the greatest solos ever.
