  • This video expands on a previous video where I did load development with the 73 grain ELD match bullet and CFE 223 powder. There were two groups in the middle that shot fairly well, so I expanded on those loading just below, and going in two grain increments to just above the second best load. These grouped extremely well. And I will use these again. shooting .223 with a Ruger American at 100 yards.

Dennis, too funny that I had terrible results with 223cfe and 68gr bthp bullets and was deflated. Googled it and found you with the same results, at GAGC nonetheless. Same places as my test. Will grab some 73gr eld and 75gr bthp and give em a try. Hope to see you up there. I'm 4 miles out and a member.

Hi Mike. Nice to meet you. I guess it is a small world after all isn't it? I'm usually there on Wednesday mornings just after opening. I hope I can meet you. If you're ever there on a Wednesday morning ask if I happen to be in. I would love to say hello and shake your hand. And I'm glad you found this helpful. Sometimes, it's not the shooter or the rifle. It can be the ammo as we have discovered. Best of success on your reloading journey. If you haven't already subscribed, I hope you will.thanks for watching

Working up a 75 grain BTHP for my ruger American gen 2.
24 and 24.5 grains of CFE 223 both grouped 5 shots just under 1” @ 100 yards. Probably going to set target weight at 24.3 to stay in the middle of the node on my rifle. I only have 150 or so rounds through it total so far of various loads and 2 different powders. I’m fairly pleased with its accuracy so far. Shoots 75 grain bullets better than 55 grain vmax loads I’ve come up with to date.

Hi Roger. I have heard that those Ruger, American gen two are incredibly accurate. I saw Hoo tee who demonstrate one on his channel. I envy you. 😀 keep working on those loads. You’ll get it to a half inch with that rifle. Thanks for watching.

Dennis nice work! You're a very good shooter - don't knock yourself. If you had a better trigger (lighter) you could be shooting bug holes. I also find interesting that as your powder charge increases, the point of impact drops. Don't know why because I would expect increased velocity to produce the opposite effect. Out of this rifle with this COAL and distance to the lands, this is the load! Congrats.

Thanks Cody. I appreciate it. Yes you would think at the higher velocity it would be shooting flatter, and higher. What I think is happening is that due to the rifling in the barrel with a one to eight twist, I believe as that bullet is traveling down the barrel, it’s trying to stay straight, but the rifling is making it spin. That puts torque on the barrel, twisting the rifle, and changing the point of impact. The higher, the velocity, the greater the torque. The greater the distance in point of impact. I really appreciate you watching brother. Thanks again.

Good work. Those of us that do load development knows the work, time, money it takes. An a wife that is glad your out of the house or upset you are. Couple things you can help with could you please list the velocity of each shot or least one for each group. also how far you are from the bottom end an the top end of the charge.maybe I missed it if so sorry also if any pressure markings. Lately it's been should I neck size only should I shoulder bump should I full length size like you say what you shoot through your Ruger is your barrel not mine what your doing is helping people getting it close an dial it in for there barrel what it does for me is it helps give me ideas for a new load. an with powder primers ect being hard to get it could pay off on components of a new kind i can find an use. "Thank you" an looking forward to this New year an what you have next.

Thanks so much Lee. I appreciate that. Actually, I don't have a chronograph, so I don't know the velocity of each shot. When you look at the target, I have a velocity listed with each charge weight. That velocity is based on data from the Hornady reloading manual. I Don't know the actual velocity per shot. And for me, the most important thing is, how does it group. If it groups well it doesn't matter about the velocity. I know there are nodes where you can make a powder change which doesn't affect the velocity much, and supposedly that's the best place to be for consistency. But consistency will show up in your groups. On a previous video I loaded charge weights between 23 grains and 24.9 grains. I found the best node to be at 24 grains. So this target I'm going just above and just below that. And this is toward the high end of the load chart. the previous video about this was from the middle of the load chart to the high end. Thanks again. I really appreciate your watching, and it sounds like you have subscribed. So thanks for that too.

You seem to use powders that I don't use. I've had good luck with H335. It seems to shoot good in all my 223's. For the heavier bullets , I use it up to 80 grains bullets

I've had some success with H335. Check out my Powder Shootout series where I test 6 different powders. Thanks for watching.
