    The idea that this carrier is an evolution of the Shandong is interesting and makes sense. It gives them a working modern carrier with electric catapults in a shorter time period, and allows them to train the crew and pilots. And it gives them time to design a better carrier without the compromises you mentioned.

In a shooting war with the US this carrier will need to be under a shore-based air umbrella and anti-aircraft missiles. Although lot more expense then do it right 1st time
      It release lot more room internal for other use.
      Also a carrier PLAN had to live with for 40 or more years. It's 20 million to fill up its tank!
      It will have been better to cater for EMALS in 1st place, as that is the future that's how overtaking can happen.
      Steam catapult has inherently all points not equal to EMALS, same with launching planes with earlier catapult (not steam) that also isn't a viable option for plane that's now 10 to 40+ tons

There are strong rumors that the Type 004 will have 4 EMALS cats, and quite possibly nuclear propulsion. I personally expect that will also be a development platform, as the Chinese are smart enough to avoid a Ford-type disaster. I expect the Type 005 will become the first Chinese Fleet Carrier. It only has to be good enough to do what China wants to do. What China really wants to do is re-unite Taiwan, and since the Taiwanese don't actually have an aircraft carrier, it would seem that the Chinese carrier will be better than no carrier.

  • @mikehammer4018
    @mikehammer4018 Před 19 dny

    I do not at all understand having weapons elevators adjacent to the stern. Perhaps there is a huge doctrinal difference between the US and China's carrier aviation; but physically it makes sense to locate the arming/disarming stations more-or-less amidship because that is where the planes will start their launches and also where they're going to end up after being recovered.
    Despite giving the situation some thought, I really can't come up with any viable explanation why there'd be any flush-mounted hatches of any sort at those locations.

  • @donaldsmith1055
    @donaldsmith1055 Před 4 dny

    There are several thing about the layout of the Fujian that I think may be a problem in operations. Some of the weapons elevators are in locations that may conflict with aircraft parking making them useless. Weapons movement in the ship should be as direct as possible from the assembly area near the magazines to the flight deck. Working them from one elevator to another below deck around parked aircraft or through passageways just delays delivery. Having them reach the flight deck near the aircraft is not a help when the aircraft could have been parked anywhere on the flight deck. The weapons jettison ramps on the elevators would not help the hanger deck as the elevators would be up most of the time. I never saw a US carrier take armed aircraft to the hanger deck. Bombs and rockets would be disarmed and removed and taken to the flight deck storage area. The space outboard of the island on American carriers was used as a staging area for weapons on carts for the flight deck crew to draw from. Unless your operation a lot of Helicopters 2 places is enough and they would not need to be marked. Some of these problems come from inexperience in operation of a ship of this type. Operational knowledge must be applied at design. There are probably other thing is the design that we can not see that will be problems because of inexperience in operation. This is the way you learn but it gets costly when it's put it in metal because you didn't know. I see the Chinese have adopted the personal color code for flight deck operations from the US.

    about the island, the most probably reason to NOT move the island further is the funnel and air inlet.
    we can see lots of funnel design in the history of aircraft carrier. some IJN carriers has a huge sliding island and a upside down L shaped funnel. i mention this here is to say the funnel is actually decide what island is on aircraft carrier.
    china use type 426 steam turbine system on war ship. honestly this is world most advanced conventional powered steam purposion system nowadays although hardly war ship use boilers and steam turbines now.
    a large carrier mostly start design more than 15 years ago before first flight test. that means it shows technology of 15 years ago
    two major changes did in building progress which actually delays the time by more than 2 years and bring in more uncertainty, the electric catapult and addition steam generators to power the catapult, navy take the risk and made the chance, and actually turns out favorable

    • @LuobingSong
      @LuobingSong Před 19 dny

      by taking the risk of using electric catapult, china is the second in the world to have the super carrier, the downside is you can not change the hull of the ship that much in the process of building. that makes some uncomfortable feature you can see in this video.
      it can always bea choice to have a old but perfect ship or a new but not perfect ship. before WW I, German navy takes the old ship, but royal navy get the dreadnought, i am Chinese so i trust the choice taken by navy, or i have to trust in it, at war the choice may decide at the end and future of the world, you can only trust in victory of your navy and your nation.
      004 may not count that much because final Taiwan trait crisis may be very soon. if you win the war, even you are actually building shit, the shit it self will be golden shit that changes the world, maybe thats why navy choose to take the risk, navy want an quick solution, bring in the victory, after the war, what ever win or lose no one will care how many aircraft carrier you have got, a defeated nation with 100 carriers can never match a winner nation with a 1000 ton frigate

    Shows some drawbacks to the iterative style of the PLAN design process. A lot is said about the inefficiencies of the US procurement style, but it does have its own benefits to its bespoke designs. Any jump as big as one to a CATOBAR carrier would have tried to maximise the potential of the new ship, with the capabilities and costs that come with it, unlike the way the Fujian has been designed.

    • @alhkcblack9617
      @alhkcblack9617 Před 20 dny

      The existing configuration he said has to do with continuing familiar operations with the existing carriers China already has. Which frighteningly might also mean China doesn't want to waste time with all new processes yet because this carrier might be needed soon because war is near. What you mentioned about maximizing the potential of a new carrier config might be reserved for the next upcoming nuclear carriers.

    I have to admit, the Fujian is an elegant looking carrier.
    Given that China builds far more ships than any other country (by many measures, more than the rest of the world combined), I imagine the Fujian was built for far less than the $13 billion cost of the USS Ford. If one subtracts the extra cost for the Ford's nuclear power (?? perhaps $3 or $4 billion??), I wonder how much less costly it is for China to build carriers.

    I can almost guarantee US aircraft were observing the trails AND there was a submarine or two grabbing acoustic signitures of the ship. ROFL
    It should be kown that rescue helicopters should already be in the air during aircraft launches and recoveries.
    Fujian is a modification and upgrade of the Shangdong, not a clean sheet design. To be fair, I still believe the Fujian is a technical demonstrator and training tool to develop air operations protocols and carrier doctrine (and possibly changes to carrier fighter designs). While it can be pressed into combat operations, I do not believe it is its primary purpose. As such, I believe it will be a single-ship class becasue the next class will incoprorate lessons learned from the Fujian. China's first carrier designed for actual combat service will be a multi-ship class.

      At the hull length it has, I would expect that it will sail as well as a US carrier on rough seas. I was on the Forrestal in a bad storm, and the arc of the round-down was 12 feet, which is too dangerous to recover aircraft, so if you can't recover an aircraft, you can't launch an aircraft, so everyone is just going for a ride.

    🤔just wondering how much resupply is needed since it’s capacity to carry fuel for aircraft and munitions is degraded due to requirement too carry fuel for its oil burning power plant unlike the US nuclear powered carriers 😂. Also wonder how much strain is on the ships electrical generating systems when fully operational and trying to continuously launch aircraft with a electro magnetic catapult. Obviously its systems have no reserve power and might actually be limited to sporadic operations unlike the US Nuclear powered carriers which have a rather large power reserve during full and continuous operations 😂 still decades behind the technical abilities of US nuclear carriers not to mention no experience or proven system of how to cycle aircraft and perfo4m maintenance on a large operational scale
