For those wondering, besides cycling to America, in the Netherlands you can also cycle to de Krim,(Crimea) Frankrijk,(France) several Engelands,(duh) Zurich,(on one side of the Afsluitdijk!) Austerlitz(with the famous pyramid!) & speaking of pyramids there's also several Egyptes. This is just a short selection, there are _loads_ more names.
Also funny are place names like de Hulk, Urk, Sexbierum & Monster.
And then you have the following trio close to each other; Rectum & Enter, with Goor(dirty) watching on.

We could reverse the exercise. For example near where I grew up in Canada Zeeland was a super dangerous place to cycle. I am pretty sure there are several Utrechts and Delfts that are terrible places to cycle.

Maybe few people noticed, but there were even more lights along 2023, enhancing night cycling.
So many changes done beautifully within a span of three years! You have made America great again! Feeling jealous now..
That's a beautifull cycleway, i really wish UK would make those in my area, real progress i see across those 3 years.
Even the old ones would be seen as revolutionary here in Italy. Here in Bologna they made the "bicipolitana", the cyclepolitan, an impressive 1 meter wide bidirectional cycleway literally in the middle of the ring road (in the lane divider). With the terribly dangerous left turn for bikes, that cross the right turn lane for cars with a totally blind spot, now in the official "cycling manual" of Bologna.
Oh, and our prime minister Salvini just decided that it's illegal for bikes to go into bus lanes and that electric scooters should have insurance and a license plate.
There is absolutely no hope, here we are going backwards instead of forward.
Crazy.
That transition at the end is so beautiful, clearly gives bikes heading onto the cycle path from America priority over cars in the same direction, would feel absolutely natural and effortless to use. Here in Germany the cycle path would end at a sharp 90° turn onto the road, with an island in a best case scenario, usually without, with the requirement to give way to cars in both directions when entering and leaving the path.

2) To those not seeing the difference that this reconstruction makes:
Imagine this same stretch with wind of 7 Beaufort (not exceptional!) or with a thin layer of snow frozen after a day (with meandering and slippery tracks of previous cyclists), with cyclists struggling and motor traffic trying to keep the "time tables" one is used to, including trucks fetching milk and bringing fuel. Then this reconstruction is a great relief for all!
EDIT: No, imagine cyclists (like children going to school) having to deal with the additional draught of trucks passing at minimal distance, and with cyclists slipping just in front of a truck. (In these circumstances.)

you realize the 2020 version would be the most pleasant and safe to cycle road in any other country, right?
Other countries like Perú, Bolivia, México, Colombia...
The only way anything like the 2023 version would get built in the UK would be if our government paid the Dutch government and whoever builds the actual infrastructure to design and build it for us. In my town, they just announced they’re going to do a bike lane near the main train station. It’s just paint. In 2023. It’s insane. Basically a box ticking exercise and nothing more. They haven’t thought for a single second about whether or not it will actually significantly increase cycling rates (it obviously won’t), but that’s irrelevant. They’ve ticked the box.
We have 3/4 ton pickup trucks modified to roll coal that ride with us on a painted shoulder full of sharps. Of course they are polite and never throw beer bottles or try to hit us. There's a big yellow bicycle sign that says "Share The Road." That's as good as it gets.
And what would the tabloid press write when your government paid our government to suit those damn cyclists?
Potentially the most frustrating part is that it's also mostly just ticking boxes in the Netherlands, it just has better boxes. If it was just good traffic engineers working without guidance, it would be extremely fragile and inconsistent. That said, you need the good traffic engineers to make the good guidelines in the first place.
That also said, the good guidelines exist now. Stick them in google translate, mirror the images, make the bike paths green, and convert to miles and you have good British guidelines. But instead the prime minister wants to ban the concept of 15 minute cities, somehow.

And of course Sunak and co. are focused on 15 minute city conspiracies, LTNs, Ultra-Low Emission Zones etc. Who else are they going to get to vote for them other than uneducated people who love their cars way too much and will believe anything you tell them?
I live in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil. Our mayor promised doing almost 1.000 km of cyclepaths until 2030. In 2022 he did only 30 km of cycle lanes. Yes, only painted streets and roads. Infuriating I know.

It was fascinating to see how the new path meandered each side of the ditch. It made a much more interesting ride than cycling in a straight line next to the traffic.😅 Looks like they put up a sturdy fence where the bike track got close to people's property too... I'm guessing that's the case because there was a lot of identical fencing along the route...

Yes, from America to Amerika just got a little more comfortable. Think through Canada and Willemstad might be shortest. Can go by Moskou and Petersburg, but then I'd probably have to through Frankrijk and Egypte too and that is om.

What a remarkable improvement! But, how did they do that? Did they take some of the farm land? It didn't look like there was enough room in the earlier video to expand the infrastructure.
They first try to buy the farmland or property, and if that doesn’t work they expropriate the land for public interest. But mostly the people selling the land get something in exchange besides money, like better acces to their property or an entrance at a different location. Sometimes there is a different option, in Dutch it’s called ‘verkavelen’ which means the farmer gets his farmland somewhere else, often merged with a small plot the farmer already had at a different location. So instead of having two plots of land on different locations, the farmer now got one big plot of land, which is easier to manage.
They used part of the side berm. At places they placed the path on the spot of the ditch and dug a ditch between the road and path .. see 6:35 and 7:50
The nearly 3km project aparently budgeted at €1.5 mln . Amazing, these days, with all the redigging of ditches, laying tarmac, positioning lamp posts etc , I would have expected a higher price tag .
@@RealConstructor expropariation or exchange is not really a nice experience. Years ago the parents of a friend of my brother had to 'sell farmland' , for a highway, which meant they got out of business. With this you usually don't get maximum price for the land (compared to selling to private parties) ..
Recently I know of a farmer who had to give in land for a river meanderization project with bike path ( 'verkaveling'/land swap). They lost some of their best soil and got inferior soil land back ....

I have few questions about the bike lane material. Why did the administration chose to use bricks instead beton? How comfortable is to ride a bike over a bikelane made of bricks?
I think I saw both. Bricks ( I think there's a specific word for these bricks ). Asphalt must be, and stay, a lot smoother.
They're tiles. A type of concrete slabs. I also don't know why they used them. They weren't mentioned in the plans but they seem to have been used near homes and at locations where the authorities may expect to have to open the path up again for underground pipes and cables. The tiles can be reused and set anew without damage to the path. But I'm also just guessing here.

You just cycle around it. Usually if someone parks their car on a bike path they leave enough space for one or two bikes to pass them.

New situation is much safer, but so close to the road that it is still not a perfect solution imo. Cars are very nearby. Loud and the separation is very small. They had to chop quit a number of large trees for this. Hope they will plant new ones along the road and in those gardens (if there is some space left for that ...).
I could imagine that when you make a complete new fietspad, you could choose a route farther away from the existing road, more in the middle of "nowhere". And yes that will cost more but would be much nicer and more comfortable and it would be a long lasting solution. I expect the present situation will be changed again within one or two decades ... ..

What's the rule regarding slow-moving vehicles using the bike lane as in 11:05? Is it only allowed for certain types of vehicles/max speed? Does it result in higher specs to support the weight?
The only ones that would be allowed are the people who use it to local access their property (building or field), for example it can be that some farmers have a few plots of land just separated by one or multiple neighbors so they can take a tractor from their garage and use the bike path for the short section at low speed to pass their neighbor and get acces to their field. Also people who do construction/infrastructure/maintenance on/next to the path would be allowed at such conditions as well as emergency services. The bike roads will be specked to handle the heavier load at low volume, as these examples won't be a frequent occurrence/high volume.

Good work. Pity they used tiles instead of asphalt on some places. The vibrations from tiles on your hands/wrists is not nice in the long run. And cudo's for cycling the exact same distance in exactly the same speed.

They cut down many old trees for this, i hope those get replanted close-by at least!
In my area (also in the Netherlands) they also adjusted the infrastructure in regard to roads and bike paths which also had some old trees in the way of the new path/road, the trees where not cut down but they used a specialized truck with a machine that digs out a good chunk of earth/soil with the trees roots and all taking the complete tree out and replant it in a new location.

Although this is definitely preferable and safe. 1 thing I always hate about my country: It looks too slick and new! Everything looks the same. And kinda as if it's made in Cities Skylines if you get what I mean. The old roads had more character, so to say. Everything in the country gets to look like this video and it gets rather boring after 32 years. Missing some old buildings too, that had to make way for roads like these or ugly box buildings.
I like your channel but... it always paints such a pretty picture "The Netherlands is soo good".. which not everyone here agrees with.
It almost starts to become annoying honestly. Videos about how good The Netherlands are, from the perspective of expats, immigrants, etc. Dutchies gloating in the comments about small facts. Like.. I get it, I really do. Especially compared to other places in the world. But it's far from perfect over here. One could even say it's boring and stale.
Go live abroad for some time if you can. At least six months or a year. Maybe in more than one place. It’s a wonderful way to see your home country with fresh eyes-for better or worse.
