Milunka Savic was a real-life Wonder Woman deserving of every accolade possible and her story should be made into a movie. As a Serbian woman whose great-grandfather fought alongside Milunka on the Salonika Front in WW1 this video actually brought tears to my eyes.
As a Serbian/American who's family is from Belgrade I couldn't be more proud that she is a hero of my ancestors

Just to make it easier to understand - Milunka was not just a warrior, a soldier in some insignificant war. It was WW1 when Serbia was attacked by much more powerful country, so Milunka's fight was not fight to conquer anything. She was fighting to defend her country, she was fighting for freedom. Serbia lost enormous number of lives during that conflict, but Milunka somehow survived the war. She declined offer from France to move and to get pension there. She stayed in Serbia, adopted many children and took care of them, so after the WW2 she fell into poverty (long story... New powers in Yugoslavia after WW2 tried to diminish importance of all stories about WW1). Sad life story of one of the bravest woman that ever lived.
Milunka Savic took her brother place going into war with her chest bandaged tightly to hide that she was female. Once when wounded they found out and refused to let her go back into war, but she stood outside outside the commandpost for days refusing to accept and was finally allowed to go back into battle.
She had an outstanding sense of knowing the perfect moment to launch an attack or hit enemy lines with her highly precise bomb throwing skills. Stories are told about how she captured, disarmed and led enemies to the regiment’s headquarters. In one action she captured about forty and in the other sixty soldiers.
She is the most decorated female soldier in the world today.

Wiki says - In 1912, her brother who was ill with tuberculosis received call-up papers for mobilization for the First Balkan War. She chose to go in his place-cutting her hair and donning men's clothes and joining the Serbian army.
I assume Disney's Mulan must have been inspired by her story.

@@MrMagmeyto be fair Mulan story and Disney Mulan are fairly different to the point that Chinese Mulan isn’t even called Mulan.
Apparently the name comes indeed from Milunka because she went in war as “Milun” and you can see the name resemblance.
Also the Chinese story is an old folktale legend, Milunka was real and truly incredible.
So, I did some research about her and her medals & awards after this video dropped.
The medals she has on at 2:40 from (our) left to righ (I think I got them, but you can google and compare)

"She died in the October of 1973, and was buried in a family mausoleum up to 2013. Then after 40 years, her remains were brought to the Alley of the Greats, where all Serbian distinguished citizens and war heroes are buried and where Milunka had always belonged."
Her story was lost and forgotten but she is now recognized for her deeds and celebrated.

Btw. not sure what the subtle differences & details mean in these medals (1&3 or 2&6), but they are some version of what I marked them as on the list.
Usually different ribbons or colors mean different levels and knowing them I would assume they depicted her actual medals (maybe they got their hands on some photos or maybe they are in a museum somewhere, I have no Idea).
Medal number 1 is the lowest class of the legion of honor (knight) and number 3 is the next class (officer) as for 2 is the silver (knight) and 6 is the gold(officer)

If Sabaton is releasing this video, I'm sure the history episode isn't far behind.
There is a documentary name "Milunka Savic: Heroine of the Great War" from 2013. I think in Mulan when i hear this history, i know there's no relation, but the part of taking the place of her brother to go to war. I cant wait to see the sabaton history of this song. There is a Indy special in his world war channel about her, but i keep waiting for sabaton channel to see that history.

Disney Mulan does indeed take inspiration from Milunka Savić because Milunka took place in the army as “Milun”, while the Chinese folktale doesn’t have a clear name reference when you research it.
Milunka and the folktale both inspired Mulan as a story. I’m just sad not more people get to know that a person, a Serbian woman, actually did what Mulan does. It should be UNESCO patrimony.
This video and her story always makes me tear up. She was a remarkable woman and heroine who deserves to be remembered.

I never heard about her until Sabatons song and I love that they keeping showing me all these badass women in history.

Usually I'm not a fav of these style of vids. When you boil it down it's a guy watching a music video and reading lyrics with some commentary.
But this just hit different. It was so....nice to see and to know I wasn't the only one who felt the emotions of it. Thank you for the video.
Thanks. The lyric videos are the hardest to do simply because the lyrics are right in your face lol but with Sabaton, there is so much history behind the songs it prompts emotions and discussions that some don't.

I an not sure, didnt you react to some other animated stories by Sabaton? (maybe you said that) If not, check out "No bullets fly" or "Nightwitches", two other great songs. Highly recommended!

Dammit this was one of the songs I asked if you can wait with from the new album because it doesn’t have a history video yet. Oh well luckily this was my least fav from the new album so it’s okay. You can react to the history video once it’s finished and released.

That story has nothing to do with the Chinese Mulan.

Milunka on the other hand (besides being a real person and not a story) took place in the army as “Milun”. You can see the name reference there.
@@clintwestwood3539 Thank you. So it's a combination of a Chinese folk tale and the story of a real Serbian war heroine. Plus her name that was taken from real history and adapted as a Chinese sounding name (Milun(ka) to Mulan).
@@herbertwest9626 Exactly. Nothing to take from Mulan chinese folktale, do not get me wrong, but if you research it "Mulan" is not even the name mentioned in most tales. There are at least a dozen different ones but the story is fairly linear: woman took the place of the brother and fought a war as a man, got recognized by other men as brave.
That is Milunka story as well (especially the recognition since she got awarded the Karadjordje star from her comrades, they elected her for the star since they fought on her side and saw what she did). She took place in the army during the balkan war as "Milun Savic". Only after her 10th deployment she got injured and they found out she was a woman. At that point they didn't know what to do and told her that she will get back from higher command officers with an answer if she could continue fighting actively or they would retire her. She answered "I will wait" and stood there, waiting, at military rest (attention). After one hour they got back that she could indeed fight for Serbia if that was her desire despite not being common for anyone worldwide to employ women on the front (if not as suicide squads, Russians did have women suicide squads during WW2 indeed that went in as bombers and wiped out entires troops of Naz.is alone).
Disney Mulan take a lot from Milunka story, starting from the name and following her precise story (the Chinese folktale woman doesn't get discovered as men if not a lot late after the war, while Disney Mulan got discovered during the war, like Milunka).
@@herbertwest9626 One last fact about the Karadjordje star: she was in the hospital at that time getting stitched. She was injured nine times on the battlefield and kept on fighting and living for 80 something years (it's unknown her true dying date, but it's around 85ish). During that time, she wasn't aware of anything of what was going on. The commanding officers were asking who was the bravest and who would deserve to be recognized as a knight of the Serbian army (star of Karadjordje) and everyone chanted her name. She got awarded in two separate occasions this star which is uncommon.
She is also the only woman to be awarded the Croix de guerre which is one of the highest honors in France, so much that it grants a pension with full benefits and attending on you. It's such an inspiring story that is weird to me that is not more known. I'd love to see films and tv shows made about this story, it should be such an inspiration for so many women about not conforming and aspiring to do whatever they want. That's why I love so much this story.

Basically, war broke out, her wimp of a brother was drafted and she went in his place. After fighting quite a few battles, she took a bullet and was rushed to the hospital where they realised, she was a woman. At that point she had already earned quite a name for herself and was allowed to return to the front after some pleading on her part.
It's the kind of story that wouldn't work today since we nowadays have more rigorous records. Nowadays, the government doesn't go "oh yeah, there is kind of a family here or something, let's ask them to send one able bodied male to fight for us."
