Last they were originally supposed to be giant crabs, they became octopi later and even later squids.
The kraken from Norse myth is a giant crab
The kraken from English myth is a giant octopus
The kraken from modern myth is a giant squid
The kraken from D&D is a shapeshifting ageless horror out of the Cthulhu mythos mixed with that wtf thing from Hollywood.
Yeah but now i want to see an evil storm giant with an kraken friend Only the kraken friend has crab claws on the end of its hand
But does a kraken as a weak spot for massive damage?
@@david18cruz1989 there is Always a weak spot
I just want to say that I like plural for octopus. Octopi. Makes me think of eight pies... That is all.
P.S. correct plural is octopuses.
In Norse mythology we have discovered some things about a giant squid called the kraken
Huh.. That's interesting. My current D&D campaign has been dealing with an undead cult and lots of freaky storms have been breaking out in the nearby towns..

You should make a series about the deities. It would be a LONG one but it would be interesting to know the powers and history of the pantheons.
Jorphdan has a good series and I like both channels, Rhexx and Jorphdan keep me abreast of the lore and when I don't have time to delve into books or at least hit the FR wiki this is what I listen too.
The issue with deities is that they are intentionally kept super vague in most editions of the game. They practically don't exist in 5e for example which I find super weird. It would be such a gigantic task to compare all the gods of this system. XD
would also be great for a more newer players and dms who arent familiar with how the gods interconnect
You should check out AJ Pickett
Wait “never again to be bound by other beings”
My friend did the math and there is a genuine i think it was 16 % chance a succubus can control a kraken.
In 5e? Succubi can only charm humanoids. Krakens are, naturally, not humanoids but monstrosities.
ZeroNumerous really? He must’ve missed that part when telling me how broken the succubus was for such a low cr.
Maybe he meant the orginal succubus? Now those ones were fricking broken.
@@dovianempire1868 Well a lot of things in 1e seem to be broken from what I understand...

Character idea:
Once a powerful hero showed up and slew several Kraken singlehandedly. One Kraken witnessed this and decided that true power might be obtained through a smaller harder to hit frame, all power gathered internally rather than externally.
So the Kraken takes on a humanoid shape and seeks out mortals to learn more about their own unique type of strength.

Lol kind of similar to my idea of playing a Dragon polymorphed into a human, but my dragon forgot it was a dragon it thinks it is a human warlock with a pact with a dragon(homebrew) but that dragon is actually itself

Just imagine your trying to go about waking 'The Great Unbeheld' which sounds like its on par with the Tarrasque

I never got why Krakens are always shown to be huge squids. Considering old Norse descriptions mention nostrils, jaws and even call them "fish". Later descriptions even describe them as "leviathan", who is serpent like. The idea of a giant squid seems to be a recent thing. A lot of the historic paintings of Kraken, aren't even of Kraken, they're of giant squid and were at the time a separate species.
All this being said, I like the new 5th edition Kraken body shape. It allows more versatility and is a bit more original than X species of real animal made giant which is way too common in fantasy as a whole. I really, really like the idea that Kraken modify and alter themselves to get stronger too, makes them much better as a recurring enemy .
Starting in 1300s they were described as fish like creatures. Before that they were described as crab like creatures.
They started being described as squid like in the 1700s, mainly believed to have been mistaken giant squids.
It reminds me of the Kraken from Clash of the Titans
@@locustzedicus2437 I did see mention of it being crab like in a 1701 source. Could be a fun addition to the monster to give it a crab carapace or have it adapt pincers that improve grappling.

As puffin forest once said “let’s get kraken”

This was really helpful, since I'm running a pirate character (Rogue/Warlock) with a Kraken as her patron.
the kraken in 5th ed resembles the greek kraken
The one from Wrath of Titans was actually Cetus...
To me it looked like an aboleth
There actually aren't Greek Krakens. They're from Norse mythology , the Wrath of the Titans movie was just that influential.
Justin Case I'm talking about the old one not the remake
As a greek, I can reassure you our mythology has no kraken. That was 100% made up for the movie. Not a son of poseidon, not a creation of ares, nothing.

I personally prefer the fifth edition version. It is more creative than just a gargantuan squid

What if the regular kraken transforms into that after attacking the party a few times. The adventurers could see it atop a citadel where cultists do some strange ritual to make it happen and it powers up.

Something that always has bugged me for a long time is that the Aboleth is meant to be a being who remembers all, used to rule the world and all that crazy shit. There is also stories of the Aboleth creating Krakens - a creature FAR stronger then itself. It just bugs me that the Aboleth, while yes a powerful and scary enemy, is still just a DC 10. Something, I wouldn't be too scared about tossing at my players when they are around level 8-9 maybe even lower (depending on party size/comp).
The *average* Aboleth, sure.
Remember that they *never stop* growing, as well as the general rule that *multiple* enemies are deadly regardless of their CR (look at the humble Ghoul, or the Scarecrow)
I've been needing this, I would love to run a water based adventure so thanks for helping with Kraken info!

The way you talks makes it extremelly enjoyable.
J’adore! I was going to use this in my upcoming session and needed this!
Is it bad that the second I hear about something like The Great Unbeheld I wanna have a party fight it?
I think thats just normal Gamer-feelings, searching for the biggest fish in the sea to test your mettle on...also could be an amazing campaign. Maybe start it like Shadow over Innsmouth, a town full of fishermen who look just...off. In truth though they all worship a kraken as their god and bring him slaves in exchange for good catches. Add a cult in and you have a nice hook for a campaign against a normal kraken first, which then leads the party deeper and deeper into the ocean, until finally they stand face to face with the Great Unbeheld.
...and as the skies go pitch black, only illuminated by the violent clashes of lightning, the towering mountain of a leviathan slowly opens his eyes, staring right at the party as it unravels its mighty tentacles, rising from the bed of the sea, creating riptides and whirlpools while it ascends out of the darkest trenches in which it waited so long to finally awaken when the time is right.
As the monstrous behemoth finally breaks throug the oceans surface, a tidal wave forms, rippling through all the seven seas, flooding lands, sinking centuries old citaldels and unmaking entire kingdoms as the water rolls across the land. While the party make it to a small rock formation that was spared by the tsunami, all they can see is darkness, as the hulking figure of the Great Unbeheld reaches through the clouds, blocking out the sun in its entirety while its two red eyes, bigger then the moon, look down upon the soon to be flooded planet. All that is standing in his way...are your players...this is a do or die situation, everything is said, words are superfluous now...it is time to roll initiative and decide the fate of the world!!
...obviously this is an Epic level campaign, but that was obvious
"Gods... it's massive..."
"It could sunder the land with one strike..."

“ The day was a slow one, hot and windless, and we sat a drift on that god forsaken sea for near a fortnight before we so much as felt a salty breeze on our brows. It was on the fifteenth day at sea that it appeared. Firstly, the winds that had thus far scorned our vessel was whipped into a frenzied gale. So great were the forces of the storm, that the mast of the ship bent to the point of destruction, snapping and splintering into a hail of wooden needles that rained down claiming the lives of two deckhands. It was not long after this that the second calamity befell us. The sea, which had been in a state of dead calm not but the night before, writhed as if alive and trying desperately to escape its bondage. Waves, taller than any I have seen in my twenty seafaring years, crashed around us, threatening to smash our iron enforced hull like rotted driftwood. By this time, between the thrashing waves and hollowing gusts, the sea around us appeared to boil, as if the gates of the nine hells had been opened by some arch-demon. It was then, amongst the battering waves and cutting gale that we met our fourth and final doom. Great and terrible arms reached up from the deep, each one lines with suckers and tipped with jagged barbs that even the most vile creatures of the Underdark would recoil from at the sight of them. The four hellish appendages rose to greet us in our hour of despair, coiling tightly around the length of our only salvation, for if the ship was lost to the sea, we would all surely perish. And so it was. The beastly arms needed but to twist only once, and our vessel was torn asunder. Iron and wood exploded violently outwards, shredded as easily as snapping tinder for the fire, and all hands were lost to the unforgiving depths. My memory of that dark day ends there, for the next thing I can recall clearly is being found washed ashore, beaten and bloodied, and near half dead from lack of water and food. You may think me daft or crazed, but I tell you I ain’t. I’ve seen the beasts of the deep, I’ve seen the one they call Kraken, and I tell you, sure as I live, that those monsters will be the end of us all. Gods help us! Gods help us all!!”

I actually love the weird and messy Kraken Mating cycle as a juiced-up fantasy version of the extreme lethality of Octopus Mating, where the males tend to give out and die a few weeks after mating, and the females guard and care for the eggs without eating for as long as 10 months in some species and conditions, and also die pretty much immediately afterward.
