  • This is my #1 most requested video and I've put off doing it but here it is: all about renting Disney Vacation Club points and why we DON'T do it. For some people, it may be the perfect way to save money on their Walt Disney World vacation, but not for us.

Thanks for doing this video. We didn’t rent when we went back in February and didn’t even think about looking into renting those points. After the fact I wondered if it could have saved us big time. It’s just something to think about.

  • @NeverlandFamily

I can definitely see why you don't rent. Coming from someone that has rented a lot before buying our DVC, not all brokers request full payment up front. That is why we never went with David's. DVC Rental store, who we always went through, requires a deposit but not the whole amount up front. Going with the kiddos, we know stuff happens so we add the"Points Protection Plan' which allowed us to cancel up to 3 days before check-in. It was definitely worth the $1.90 per point.
I don't disagree with you that there is a lack of flexibility on the renters end and that you do have to prepare to plan ahead, however, for our family, we still save a good amount of money renting the deluxe resorts vs going through Disney... even with passholder discounts. Especially now that they have added parking fees...grrrr.

    • @annabelle7262
      @annabelle7262 Před 5 lety +3

Neverland Family yes, this is who we are going through and didn’t have to everything up front which was refreshing to see considering other brokers do. I would never rent or even take a trip without any kind of insurance so we opted into the protection plan just in case!!! Lol hopefully we don’t have to use it. We also never get to take advantage of the free dining plan that Disney offers because we already have our AP’s :(

I dont think they do this anymore unfortunately, the "protection plan" is bult in to each trip now and it only refunds you 100% if you cancel 120 days before or more which is pretty unrealistic. 120-61 days gives back 75%, 60-16 50%, 15-4 25%, 3-0 0%...... does anyone know of any other place you can rent dvc from that has a better policy than this?

Another great informative video! Perfect explanation as to the risks/concerns for renting points. We rented and it was awesome, but I completely agree with your concerns. Renting is absolutely NOT for everyone. We rented points from David's for our Disneyland trip in February and it was a great experience. I'm a hardcore planner, who could do 6 separate requests until they found one that fit for us. We had flexibility in selecting the date initially, then once the DVC was booked, I proceeded to book the flights for our 9 family members from 4 states and made arrangements for 5 kids to be out of school. So for us, there was no switching/canceling/changing plans - but I absolutely bought insurance! We got an amazing DVC 2 bedroom suite at the Grand Californian for a couple hundred dollars more than 2 standard rooms at the Paradise Pier. Having 3 special needs kiddos with feeding difficulties and 3 teenagers - it was vital we had a kitchen! Oh, and CONGRATULATIONS on 8K subscribers!!!!

I am glad I am not the only one doing the math for vacations! We have never rented DVC points. We do get a military discount, and when I total it all up, to us it always seems like a better deal to not rent. That and I have never found availability for the resorts we want. But we don't plan 11 months in advance. more like 2 months. Not last minute, but might as well be.

You really hit the nail on the head! As an AP, I just scored water view at the for $15 less than a standard, undiscounted room, and it was so easy to change my reservation MYSELF. I love doing boujee Disney (hello club-level-monorail-loop-room-service spree!) as much as anyone, so I’ve thought about the savings options at Deluxes with renting points, but I’m firmly on team no points for all of the reasons you shared. This is great information. I rented points for my upcoming stay at the Boardwalk in July. Thanks Jen! That was very helpful info. We are planning on renting points for a big family holiday in 3 years when my daughter (the baby of the family) graduates from Nursing College. There will be 8 of us and I have some hesitancy about renting points. We want to be on Disney property so that everyone can do their own thing, no rental cars etc. My husband and I are underwriting the cost of the accommodation and the kids and their partners have to pay airfare from Ireland and other essentials. We HAVE to plan way out because there are 8 of us, that being said I doubt any of them will cancel and if one of them does there will still be plenty of us travelling 😂😂😂.

I've rented points multiple times before, always direct from a member and love it. Saved a lot of money and had free parking and a kitchenette for breakfast/snacks in the room. Of course we fly so when we commit to a stay and we go. I would buy insurance if I was concerned about cancellation. I see you are a dvc member and driving distance so not the typical once a year visitor. We are now dvc as well. But in the past we always stayed more than a week and that savings is huge over 8-10 nights.

I just booked in January 2022 with DVC Rental Store: Polynesian Standard Studio for literally $1400 off the rack rate! Did the math, and even if I could eventually get 30% discount, I still save $700. Also, DVC Rental store has a cancellation policy where you get all funds (or percentage depending on WHEN you cancel) paid as credits toward a future booking. But, with that said, I understand completely why you don't. I probably wouldn't either if my trip was less than 11 months out anyway! Great video. You've gained a new subscriber!

This is the only way I do it, now. Looking forward to several trips, coming up!

Great video with lots of information. Interesting topic and I like how you always stress that this is your way and reasons but it can work for others. I am a very visual person so when there is a lot of info and numbers I like to see them on the screen especially when it's about comparison. Even when you talk about it you gesture to your right and left hand side so maybe put in some graphics? Again, this is a personal preference so maybe not at all your style. But I think I hade the same "issue" with the collab you did for your with/without dining plan videos.

I don't understand why it's called "renting" points rather than "buying" points. The DVC owner doesn't have those points after you use them, so it seems you're buying them, not renting them. This is a very clear, balanced evaluation. I think renting will work for me when I'm retired. I'll have a lot of flexibility then.

Well, for some families for around the same price for a moderate, renting points may be their only way of experiencing a deluxe resort. They're likely willing to give up that lack of control, book that far in advance, take the risks involved in trip interruptions, etc. just to stay in a resort they've dreamed at staying. I've personally never rented points or have an interest in DVC (I'm a TA, AP & my husband is Active Duty Army, so with our discounts we do much better) but for some, it can make or break a trip. It's definitely not to be knocked. Everyone does Disney differently!!

I just crunched the numbers for my stay. I’m at Beach club from September 17-23. I rented for $1656 in a standard studio. Rack room price is over $3100. I’m down there for a work conference so my dates didn’t need to be flexible. I’m usually a planner so booking far out doesn’t bother me too much. I had similar savings at BLT two years ago as well. Different strokes for different folks.

Not everyone lives close enough to Disney to make weekend trips in a cost effective manner, even with Annual Pass discounts, Airfare isn't free, and can easily add several hundred dollars to a weekend trip. And "last minute" airfares are prohibitive. Most people in the middle of America DO plan trips more than 7 months out, making DVC and point rentals a viable option, especially for larger groups needing a two or three bedroom unit. Also, you are forgetting the cost of food. With DVC every unit has a fridge and microwave, 1 bedroom and larger DVC units have full kitchens, having just returned, we saved a ton of $ by having breakfast in our villa, a table service lunch in the parks, and then making sandwiches in the room for dinner, except for the night we did the fireworks dessert party.

Sorry a bit late to watch this Jen. Ugh I thought I was so ahead of the curve. We just wanted to be near Disney Springs so I rented DVC points for SS. There ended up being 3 of us and we only have a standard room. Doesn’t have 2 beds. Just a bed and pull out couch. Not our preference. Second I had no idea I wouldn’t be eligible for the dining promotion. I know I’m saving on the room but I could have booked Pop with refurbished rooms and 2 beds for less and gotten the dining promotion. I would have just paid to upgrade to the standard plan. And I’m also dealing with this back and forth with the broker. We added an additional night which is considered a second reservation. The member added our 3 rd guest to the second reservation but not the first. So, we have yet to add dining because we are waiting. I did pay the $199 per reservation for insurance just in case we absolutely needed to cancel so we could cancel if absolutely necessary. So that cost me $400 instead of $200 because I booked that last night and it’s considered another reservation. Grrrrrrrrr. I don’t think I would do this again. I always think I have got it all covered and I mess up every time!!!

I usually tell people who are interested in DVC to rent points to stay at the resorts they are interested in buying into, or just to rent in general to see if they like the villas. But I agree that the process overall can be a hassle. Am I recalling correctly if you are already a DVC member you can rent points and get them transferred so you have more control of the reservation process? Oddly enough I have found myself with some points I am likely going have to rent them out or convert them to RCI or lose them.... unless I can modify my current January reservation at the 7-month mark to a 2 bedroom villa. But I am also wary of using a rental company to broker the deal if I can avoid it. Not because they are shady or anything I just rather rent to someone I know, so these hassles are not as big of a deal. Plus I don't lose anything if I rent for the rate I would have gotten from a broker, and give someone I know a magical experience. Thanks for highlighting the downsides of renting that are not always clear.

Just wondering when you said you have used David's Rentals many times was this before buying DVC? I would suggest to people that maybe they should consider renting points at a DVC they are looking to purchase before they commit to a big financial decision! Unfortunately some people buy a home resort without even staying in it first to make sure it's what they really like! Another point is the insurance isn't that much if the owner doesn't already have it! DVC rooms are also great because they can accommodate a big family as opposed to having to get two or more traditional rooms! Often times some last minute cancellations are available through resale stores for a little less if you can swing a quick last minute! You are right that the most wanted resorts will have no rentals available...BW and Beach with Star Wars opening is hard to get!

    • @JenLefforge

We always rent points but due to the distance that we come (Vancouver Island) we always plan 11 months out anyway. We are saving a ton by renting - you do obviously save more when you move up a category, say from a studio to a 1 bedroom. This September we are staying 7 nights at the Poly for $1888.00 - if I were to pay cash and book through Disney it would be $4249.15 including tax. We could never, ever in our lifetime pay that much. So we are saving $1463.85 and we get to stay at a resort that we never thought would be possible. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on the resort and time of year - but for us, it is definitely worth it. We thought about buying DVC but we only come every other year or two. We figure, let someone else pay the member dues? At least it really works well for us.

Dvc is $1500 for the same dates. Both standard rooms. We ended up booking a 2 bedroom villa instead for $4100. So $300 more than the rate of the standard studio if purchased normally. Not sure we will ever book any other way unless we do a quick get away and can’t get a resort we want.

Without renting points, it would have been much harder to swing financially for us, so I'm glad we did. But, again it's just my husband and me (no kids yet), so that helps a little with being able to plan that far out. But, I do agree with you. While I haven't read every single comment, I don't see anything about renting points for transfer. I know the timeshare store offers this. It's only for existing DVC owners, but you can rent points and have the points (one time) transferred into your account. Then for the duration of those points, they're treated like your own for booking and modifying. It would be like banked points in that they expire when they expire and can't be banked. The one time I rented points, that's how I did it. Although I rented directly from a friend who had points she wanted to rent out and we didn't go through a broker. That gives existing members more flexibility when renting.
