3 Day Camp in the Woods - Bushcraft Shelter, Dog, Wool Blanket (STORM FORCE WINDS)

- Join me on a 3 day camp in the woods with my friend Dustin and his dog. We build a bushcraft shelter using natural materials, sleep on tree leaves, deer hides and a wool blanket. Storm force winds threaten to destroy the bushcraft camp that we built but we secure it down and use a tarp to protect us from the storm wind and rain. Using bushcraft skills, we built our shelter out of tree saplings from the forest. Once we build the foundation of the shelter, we put a tarp over the top to protect it from the rain and keep the inside of the shelter dry. On Day 2, we really expand the camp, and build a fire reflector with axe and saw, as well as building a cooking setup with pot hangers for the cast iron oven and kettle. Dustin had prepared some tasty camping meals for the 3 days that we were there. On the first night we spit roast a whole chicken over the fire, the second night we grill a steak over the fire and cook vegetables hobo style in the ash. On the 3rd day, we had storm force winds over 40mph rip through the forest, thanksfully our bushcraft shelter was secured and lasted through the storm. It was an epic 3 days, a camping trip to remember for sure! Thanks for joining us on the adventure! - Mike

What an epic trip! Nothing like 3 days in the woods to reset the body and mind (FULL COOKING RECIPE'S IN VIDEO DESCRIPTION ABOVE) Dustin filmed a Behind-the-Scenes episode of this trip, watch it on his channel here: czcams.com/video/T8MiSNL_o5k/video.html Hope you enjoy and please subscribe if you would like to see more like this - Mike
i have been watching for hour and gonna watch the rest soon
I thouroly enjoyed watching this, very relaxing, thanks, well done
Hello.
please. I need tips for perfect places for bushcraft in england. if possible with lakes to be able to (try) fish. or clean river.
I'm out of work, I need a 4 or 5 days rest before my big holidays, which will only be in February or March and a 3 days next to Christmas (December).
I make this request because I am not English, I am Portuguese, maintenance work in a hotel in London, and not what the law says about bushcraft in England.
My English is also weak and I do not want to have problems with police or anything.
thank you very much.
Hey Mike!!!
Did you know you can cook an egg wrapped in a banana peel too?
Works the same way as the wet bundle in the video.
Keep up the good work
My English is weak, but I think I understand you. you are trying to say that it is forbidden to fish and eat the fish. I know this rule, I return the fish to water. I promise.
I've been reading a very good article on the author's internet: paul kirtley's blog. article title: how-to-find-a-place-to-practice-bushcraft-skills-in-the-uk
and now I know I'm plotted. if you can not find a place where you have no problems here in England, maybe I'll go to portugal or to Sweden;) as Nathan says. a blog reader commenting on this article; comment: (Now I'm living in Sweden and being a "crazy person who would rather sleep outside in the wet and cold rather than his bed" (typical British person's thoughts) is the norm and I can freely do so thanks to Allemansrätten. Private land, fires, picking berries / mushrooms, camping, roaming, you name it. It makes the UK feel rather backwards.)
You should start putting a warning sign/message at the beginning of your videos with Dustin, with a title saying "Do not watch it while hungry", or something like that. Another great video guys, as always! Thanks for sharing ❤️
That's a great idea!!
Getting the meat sweats just watching it huh???
Dustin adds a cool dynamic to the whole. Dude knows how to cook in the woods!
You should go on a date 🥰

You two make a Great Team!! I really enjoy sitting down at night watching you guys. Better than anything you can find on TV. I can't wait to see more!! Dustin, you Rock on the Fire!!!
Your channel is what the world needs more of. I'm making my way through all of your videos - because they're not only informative and inspiring - but because it's just so lovely to watch genuinely nice people interact with each other and build incredible things from nature.
Thank's Mike, I really enjoyed this one.... Amber loved it too! The 'BEHIND THE SCENES' video is up on my channel. Can't wait for the next adventure!
It was a bloody good laugh mate! Amber was great!
This was such an awesome video. Dustin is an amazing cook. He makes it look so good and easy to do. Amber is great. Just love when she's around. Can't wait you guys' next adventure. Thanks Mike for sharing your adventure. Sending greetings and blessings from North Carolina, US.
Martin Fowler! Is that you?
Amazing Stuff man, cant wait to see you guys at it again, should look into making a bushcraft cookbook. Theres something really brilliant about the way you present, cook and prepare your food you are a seriously talented cook aswel as being an immense guide full of knowledge and information. Awesome video, glad you collabed again.
Great to hear your voice...it's nice seeing you out and about with Mike. Greetings from Hong Kong. /joel
Greetings from Montana!
I am Native American here in U.S. in Montana and your structure resembles that of a native American s Sweat Lodge.
Also a very good shelter, good job! I am a loyal subscriber and never miss a video.
Thanks! Glad you liked the video and hi to everyone from Montana!
It worked really well, considering the wind!
a sweat lodge if used for ceremonies and a wigwam for a shelter
I had the privilege of participating in a sweat lodge ceremony when I was about 14 and living in Illinois. What an amazing experience. Some shapes/structures/functions we humans create are just natural extensions of our imaginations and solutions, aren't they? And in that, we see the manifestation of our humanity transcending time and space, like a long, connecting thread.
In Africa some tribes in the Congo i believe use the very same methods to create their nightshelters when on hunting trips, the structure is so sturdy it can last a while when made proper. Sometimes tribesmen come back to the same place and just have to reapply big leaves for cover, the structure still being sound!
This must be the fourth or fifth time I've watched this. Mike, I never thanked you. I was in a really dark place about a year ago after my brother took his own life. I felt as though I could not go on too and got very sick from the stress. Thankfully your channel helped me so much during those dark days. The tranquility of the outdoors and your interactions with dad gave me a lot of peace. So thank you Mike, I love your videos. Please, keep up the good work :)
Hope you're doing well 🙏
@@katemccoy8658 thank you Kate, doing a lot better 😊
Thank you ! what a time it was and epic meals as always . Dustin is an amazing host , i was told that a good bushcraft host will crack out a stash of either whiskey or chocolate to the delight of the company and Dustin had both ! haha . Cheers boys from Alberta Canada :)
The amount of editing and work you put in, can't fault your dedication at all! I hardly watch movies for over an hour without touching my phone, but I don't touch it when watching your videos. Bloody broke my ankle start of September, you are my portal to happiness. Roll on Decembers return to camping!!!
Praying for a speedy recovery for you! Godspeed!
I broke my ankle this is week 3 just had surgery and just got in my hardcast can't wait to get back in the woods thnx so much great videos hopefully I'll be in the woods in another 2 mos

yah bubba bumped his head driving his four x four he's okay until he hears the words viking warrior then goes bezerk
I like how the dog was in the middle of everything clearly trying to get a game going.
Loved spending camping time with good looking men of the forest and Amber! Nice show and great cooking . Yum!
Dustin is a 'champion' example of what a professional guide can do to make a woods outing into a lifetime memorable event. Amber is some awesome stick fighter with a hazel stave! I always enjoy your outings with Dustin for bushcraft challenges and for top-class 'guide's' food. I like ripe fresh figs very well. They are more appealing than the 'Fig Newton' cookie bars of my childhood. 'James Bond' in his early adventures, enjoyed Greek Yoghurt and fresh figs for a gourmet breakfast. When I went out with a wool blanket, I also took horse blanket safety pins to keep the footwell of my sleep system together during the night.
Words can't express the surprise she gives you when she whacks you round the back of the knees with a stick!
She whacked me on the back of my head once! That hurt, bigtime!
Congrats on 600K+ subscribers! Totally Awesome! Dustin and Amber are perfect bushcraft mates....especially, since Dustin is quite the chef! WOW, you two ate like kings on this trip. Thanks for sharing this epic 3-dayer...wind & ALL!
Thanks!
I think that was a brilliant camp shelter set-up and everything was so neat and neatly left. I found this video to be so homey and comforting to watch and didn't want it to end. Thank you for a wonderful camping experience.
Can't think of a better way to spend 3 days. Really enjoyed this one Mike. Dustin's knowledge and appreciation for "bush" cooked food is a treat to watch. Keep up the good "work" gents!
Love to see the campers that sweep the area👏👏👍
Leaf no trace. Get it?
A great eating/drinking trip and some camping happened along the way!
how cute the dog
Amber the Dog is having a good time seeing the silly Human's scratching the ground, dragging sticks and inevitably, marking territory. They even built the coolest ever doghouse. That's probably how the dog sees it.
Keith Floyd eat your heart out!!
Timestamp - 1:18:17 whiskey kicks in ;) In all seriousness brilliant collab, guys. Best one yet in my opinion. Really looking forward to the coastal adventure!
I started with the idea of bushcraft and going out in the Woods, sleeping there, ... about one year ago, so I bought the equipment I need. I somehow never went out and sleeping outside. Now, I was more interested again and went out do camp, but it started to be to cold for my sleeping bag and I can't afford a better one (I am only 16), but next spring, I really want to spend some more nights in the forest. But until then, I'll watch your videos and learn from them. I am really happy to have you and your videos. Thanks!
Do you have a sister, or someone else in your family, named Eva Maria ?
3:30 The dog playing with the stick is so cute
Excellent video, not too long as there was so much to "absorb". Thanks much to both of you!!
Nice trip and a great movie! Thanks for taking us along. Greeting, Hoffi!
Awesome vid mate! Always love it when Dustin is on. You guys cook up a storm. Greetings from down under.
Really enjoyed your show. That's my kind of camping. My husband and I loved camping when we were young until it got too rough for us old folks. 😄😄😄
Living in the north east of France we eat raclette often. Usually served with small baked potatoes and a selection of "charcuterie". Cold meats and dried sausage etc. I agree it is pure Heaven but very bad for cholesterol levels. Lol. I will definately try the chicken recipy. Good health and stay safe.
To bad I'm in the US. I'd like to join y'all. Looks like alot of fun. Tbh just the food alone makes me wanna make the trip 🤣🤣
That chocolate banana thing is the best Idea I have ever seen. Thanks!!
It works so well!
This is like the 4th time I’ve watched this all the way through lol. Everytime I can’t sleep, I put it on TA outdoors, or bushcraft Tools..
🤔That sounds like a good time to me beers 🍺🍻 with a friend with good food in the woods. You can't get better than that 👍
Been watching Mike for a couple of months now and his vids havd been so inspirational to me and my 17 yo son. Not only have we braved the wilderness but I've also started a CZcams channel covering my very slow progress lol. So thanks dude for the vids and inspiration 😁😆👍

That's awesome man! Glad the videos have inspired you
This appears to be a variation from the recent shelter made on the Survival Russia channel. Love seeing Amber and Dustin again. What a great outdoor cook Dustin is, so original in his ideas. A grand outdoor chef. He's now in competition with Carlisle 195, which is a high bar to meet.
I wonder if Jaxx and Amber would get along.
One of the best things about this channel is, regardless of what you know, you bring in others to instruct you, whether it's your dad or Dustin, and that is a great thing because we all learn at the same time.
Man your channel is one of the few that I actually really enjoy watching on CZcams, doesn't matter if it's a 10 minute video or an hour long one, rule of thumb, it's good.
I love the way you go about these videos. I always feel like I am there with you, you let nature usually speak for itself, having shots of the environment and the outdoors, with just birdsong, rain or wind. You intersperse with informative comment. I never feel condescended to. Like having a lovely trip out from your own home!
YESSSS New TA Outdoors! Love your channel.
I would have to say that you fine chaps looked like you had fun out in the wild . I live in the United States & I use to do this kinda stuff like this when I was much younger even in weather that 20 degrees with snow on the ground . Good time
This is a great action, adventure, educational, cooking, survival and family vid.
Englishmen, sitting out in the bush, sleeping in a bivy, cooking on an open fire, and discussing the merits of tea. How wonderful! When we we used to go bush our whole day revolved around finding food and cooking and eating. Like as it should be. All the best.
Eating raclette wrongly but that's for another time ;)
Watched this in bed at 3 o'clock in the morning. Had to get up to make myself a sandwich.
Always find myself needing something hot and warm to eat while watching an episode, my taste buds are calling out for that feeling of eating after a day of camping, always taste so good!
I had to get up and make myself a shelter.
Yes, watching these guys cook does that to me too :)
Ok
no
Plz invite Dustin to do a overnight at your camp mike.
No better friend than one little hang out with your camping and especially Make really good food.
I like the fact that it was just a woodland clearing, then someone who has passed through the clearing numerous times could come across your bender and find great food, drink, warmth and merriment, then 4 days later, it would just be a woodland clearing again. As if you were never there. There's magic in that.
We had a yellow Labrador Setter (looked just like Amba) named Amba Gita. We loved her dearly even though she was the dumbest dog I've ever had. We lived thirty miles out of Austin, Tex . on 10 acres situated about a100 yards from a slow farm road and she managed to get run over by a school bus.
Great video!!!!
Thumbs up!!!
Clark and Virginia
Aw, she probably loved the kids.
Greetings from the Boy Scouts of Greece! Lovely setup and mouth-watering food! I suppose the shelter could be described as a "Europeanised" wigwam. Also, a stone or mud screen at the base of the heat reflector works wonders against the spread of fire.
I understand the "Leave no trace behind" ethic but In my own humble opinion when a structure is safe and 100% biodegradable, just as the frame of your shelter was, it should be left behind. It could prove useful to another camper who has to set up a shelter eg. under adverse weather.
Very well done! Cheers!
Yorkshire Gold tea! Yes! Discovered it stationed in the U.K. Still order it by mail 40 years later. Love your videos!
As an American it’s cool to see a vintage made is USA product be so adored by someone such as yourself. Those days are over for USA but back in the day I believe we made the best tools on this planet. Great video!
Which all videos were this long! I LOVE this type of videos. More more more!
A brilliant episode Mike! I love these longer videos, it's really great to get a more in depth look at how you get on in the woods. Cheers!
There may be English bush crafters who might have a sort of reverse perspective, but as one who has lived and worked in remote areas of the US for decades, camping in a British woodland holds special appeal. There, you can do things like cook where you sleep, get rip snortin' buzzed, sleep in, and other luxuries. There is a certain homely intimacy about the way the camper gets to interact with the environment there. It can be like the destressing that comes with breakfast in bed with a beautiful woman. One can get close to nature in a manner that fosters relaxation and wonder instead of worry and situational awareness.
Across much of the wildland areas in the US (and I presume, Canada), a nagging awareness of the possibility of catastrophic derailment of enjoyment by misadventure or predation is never far below the surface of consciousness. You British guys may envy us for that. The grass is always greener.
He knows what he’s on about with food!
Hallo aus Deutschland,
Klasse Video, toller Trip und MEGA Essen.
Gruß Thomas
Ich finde es auch toll!
That's a good looking dog. Thank you for sharing.
Great. Now i’m starving. Every time Dustin comes out I have to go make some food.
If you want to cheat, just get a small crock pot package of Beef Stew Seasoning, mix it with olive oil or water and season your beef meats the same way. Weber Mediterranean Herb Seasoning goes well with every meat type.
As a side note, if you can tote a knife and a hatchet, it would be okay to bring along a fork and spoon.
Please bring Amber a play friend.
😂 😂 😂 Yup, I was out camping in that too. Great video as always.
All the best

I can't wait to watch it tonight.. first I have to finish my work. ^ _ ^

Watching this in December of 2021 and Mike has 2.4million subs....
Thanks, I'm 54 and still learning. I enjoy watching your video, and then try the knowledge you teach.
Learned a lot, please keep sharing, thanks.
First time I went camping with my friend, we ended up just bringing those ready-made meals (just add hot water!). second time we were more prepared and less scared and we actually bought burger patties, brats, (lunch) and steak (dinner). friend forgot the potatoes at his house for dinner so ended up just having steak for dinner.
We didn't really know how to set up/start a charcoal fire. Always thought it was easy - didn't help that the wind was howling and it was difficult to get it going. And then it started raining... but the steak was delicious. I'm sure it was the hard labor involved that made me even moreso (sweat is salty, good seasoning? lol jk). We've improved since then but just the memories were so worth it.
btw my dude, what backpack are you using?
Kyros z
you can also make chilicaseroles / pasta. spread it in thin layer on baking trays and slowly dehydrate it over night in the oven on as low temprature you can put it on but preferably whit the fan on. and you have some much much higher quality quick lunches for in the between snacks or wen u want some extra warmt, just add some water to rehydrate and put it on the fire!
Your conversation about tea. I live in Georgia US and I travel 80 miles round-trip just to get Yorkshire tea

We build that kind of shelter here in NZ. We use vines called 'Supplejack' and tie them off with strips of flax. If left to stand they will last a least one year before the flax breaks down. I've experimented with them and the longest time was two years. We use crown fern for bedding and tree ferns for cover, which is woven in and out of the vines. We then put layers of moss over the top to shed the rain. It makes for a very dry and cozy shelter. Cheers from NZ
