  • And now a look at a much, much older game that nonetheless makes a ton of mistakes.
Galactic Empires, by Companion Games, New York, was one of many "Sci-fi" games to come from the Wild West era of TCGs (1993-1999). It launched late '94 and lasted until late '96, making it another game to suffer the Two Year Curse.
Here we take a look at Basic Set B. There will be Asteroids, Shovels, and...Zoidberg? #SevenDeadlyTCGSins

So funny, I have been feeling nostalgic for this game because I used to have a bunch of cards as a kid but never learned how to play. Seeing them through adult eyes makes me realize I dodged a bullet 😆

So... we have barely-readable text, along with flavor text mixed up with rules text? Yow.
Like... if the flavor text was always its own separate blurb, you could kind of work around it, but many of the cards shown intermingle the flavor and rules within the same block, or even within the same *line* of text; you have no choice but to try and read *everything* on a card, because there is no way to know if important info is hidden among the fluff... and while that's bad enough, the illegibility of it all makes it so that you have know idea how important the text you're straining to read even is. Could be useless fluff, could be a devastating ability that makes the card awesome. You'll never know, because you've gone cross-eyed trying to read generic-font text over a Magic Eye Picture background!

Played this game a lot with my friends dad(who then became my friend) and it was something we played when we couldn't play DnD or Pathfinder. Lot of fun if someone in the room memorized all the rules. After a while you have so many resource producing planets you can ignore resources...til someone broke out the planet exploder deck.
My favorite build was a Leopan crew combat deck, since Leopan ships had no shields and instead had armor, they could freely transport their crew to and from ships and sabotage them or steal resources. Good times.
The art style and setting is pretty interesting too. Wish something came out of it.

I hate to say it, but just going by the cards shown, this is something that might actually work as a card-based board game, where you can actually provide tokens to track all the fiddly bits and actually balance the cards as opposed to... whatever the hell the "balance" is here.

So, Kohdok, I'm curious to get your thoughts: given the lack of accepted "best practices" for CCG design, marketing, and support in 1994, would you say that there's more creativity in CCGs now or during the glut that immediately followed Magic's debut? Do you think the lessons to be gleaned from the now-evergreen market leaders have resulted in a more or less interesting products coming to market, regardless of how long they survive?

It might be cool to plan a viewer giveaway for all your excess weird decks and game paraphernalia, we all watch you and are interested enough in the games and game design to continue to watch you so we all might have more interest in these products then someone on eBay might give you. I think it would be a very cool way to thank all your viewers for all the support over the years, if you feel so inclined to do so

for a new card game is it wise to make a starter deck comprised of cards from the first booster box if they come out simultaneously? I want to know because this seems to be the case for starter decks in popular games the 90s-early 2000s and MTG still does this (and also im making a card game of my own).
