  • In this HOI 4 playthrough I'll be playing as Czechoslovakia and trying to survive the war intact on historical settings. We'll have to build up our armies and fortify our borders, but will it be enough to hold off the Germans? Lets find out!

I don't try to "power-play", instead I try to keep the flavour and feel of a World War 2 strategy game.

At 2:32 there was a question of where the 1st 3 researches might reasonably deviate from the usual choices of basic machine tools and construction 1 and getting a start on the mechanical computing tech branch.
One answer is Ethiopia, one of the 2 countries at war at game start in January 1936. Construction 1 is essential for Ethiopia, since building some level 1 forts at the victory point cities of Abbis Ababa and Harer is essential to Ethiopia surviving Italy. Ethiopia only has 2 research slots. A weapons category has to be researched before lend lease can be received in that category. As an example, you can't receive towed anti-air until you research towed anti-air 1. Also, when the generic Focus Tree gives you a new Military Factory, you want to be producing Infantry Weapons 1, so you want to research that fast as well. The result is deferring research speed up till later, and getting introductory weapons in various weapons classes researched now. If you take time out in 1936 to research the speeding up of future research, your weapons production is too slow, and you can miss out on lend lease opportunities, and thereby get quickly capitulated by AI Italy.
Short version: In an Ethiopia-like situation, sometimes the need for various type of techs not available at game start is so pressing that research on speeding up research has to be deferred until after 1936. You want your construction to go fast, and your want weapons production to go fast, and you need introductory research on various classes of weapons such as towed artillery and towed anti-air, and you want Infantry Weapons 1, and you want all of that before you can get conquered by an Italy, so as a result, the research on getting research done faster has to be delayed.

That's very interesting, I didn't know about the initial requirements for lend-lease.

At 6:09 you have 9 Military Factories at game start at noon onJanuary 1 1936.
An approximate meta for many countries is 2 1/4 years into the game to have 2 greater than 150% as many Military Factories as at game start. According to that meta, that gives you around 15 or 16 Military Factories on March 31 1938.
Of course what you make with those Military Factories will also be important. Not many countries will be selling their old weapons before then. Ideally, you want so many army divisions that you have about 2 3/4 army divisions per border tile, to avoid the possibility of some lone army division getting ganged up on.
Each general can effectively have 25 divisions. There is a 4% dilution of a general's bonuses with 25 divisions, but a general gets promoted 4% faster due to having 4% more divisions than 24 divisions that are earning him promotion points, so things even out in that sense. Also, the extra division allows better cycle charging, as divisions that get temporarily pushed out of a fight have more divisions to take up the work load. All in all, one general ideally will cover 9 border tiles with his 25 divisions. You have about 39 border tiles, so you need about 39 * 2.75 = 108 army divisions to adequately hold the entire border. That's a lot of new divisions to recruit and train. You need 4 generals with 25 divisions, and 1 general with 10 divisions, 5 generals in all just for the border. A 6th general is a good idea for a strategic reserve to be entrenched at key locations such as supply hubs, victory point cities, and airfields. Buying a new general costs both Political Power and Command Power.
A basic defensive division design might be
Infantry AT 1937 (15 Combat Width with 6,800 soldiers)
      5 infantry battalions
      1 towed anti-air battalion
      1 towed artillery battalion
      1 towed anti-tank battalion
      1 towed artillery support company
Since you will have to train up a lot of soldiers, a good idea is to make sure that at least some of the weapons that your recruits break during training are cheap. Putting 1 factory on making Basic Infantry Equipment at game start and having it produce nothing else for the next 2 1/4 years will create a lot of cheap training weapons.
Level 1 forts on hilly terrain are cheap, and can be a formidable obstacle to attacking enemy divisions.
It will be interesting to see how many Military Factories you have 2 1/4 years into the game on March 31 1938, and how many army divisions you will have then.

Low recruitable population and low oil availability are setting the limit in July 1937 at the end of the video on pre-war preparation for Czechoslovakia. Below is an unusually lean but still somewhat balanced division design that can attain about 1.5 Soft Attack per 100 manpower in early 1938.
      Infantry AT 1938
(16 Combat Width with 6,600 soldiers)
      4 infantry battalions
      1 towed anti-air battalion
      2 towed artillery battalions
      1 towed anti-tank battalion
      1 towed artillery support company
      1 engineer support company
On unfortified plain terrain, 4 infantry battalions in a division design with less than 25 Armor provides insufficient HP and Defense. However, on well-fortified hilly terrain, 4 infantry battalions will be good enough. The plus side of the above especially lean division design is excellent Soft Attack per 100 manpower, while avoiding weaknesses in Air Attack and Hard Attack and Piercing. An infantry battalion might get 0.6 Soft Attack per 100 manpower in early 1938, but the above division design has about 1.5 Soft Attack per 100 manpower. When there is insufficient manpower, Soft Attack per 100 manpower is an important metric.
Despite Czechoslovakia's difficulty obtaining oil, a similar division design with an added heavy tank battalion and a 5th infantry battalion can be created for capital defense and reinforcement and counterattack purposes, at the expense of requiring 1,500 more soldiers than the Infantry AT 1938 division design above.

About getting lend lease from an AI country willing to send you items, if the AI country does not sense a shortage in an item, it won't send you that item.
Here is an example. Suppose you want towed artillery, but you don't have towed artillery 1 tech yet. That means you can't create a division design with a need for towed artillery, and as a result, the AI country thinks you don't have a shortage of towed artillery to fill since you have no towed artillery support companies and no towed artillery battalions. Once you research towed artillery tech though, you can create a copycat division design, and then for 10 Military Experience add a towed artillery support company to the copycat division design, and then switch over one of your divisions to use the modified copycat division design. You then have a shortage of a dozen or so pieces of artillery, and the AI country will then send you some towed artillery, if you have good enough relations with that AI country of course.
For receiving airplanes, it is a little bit trickier. Having the base tech isn't good enough by itself. You have to get that first airplane somehow, either by purchasing it or manufacturing it, because unlike with an army tech item like towed artillery where you can create an artillery support company even though you don't have any artillery pieces yet, you have to actually have that first airplane to create an airwing. Once you create that first airwing with that first airplane, you then have a shortage of 99 airplanes (or in the unusual two cases of scout planes and large airframe torpedo bombers, a shortage of 9 airplanes). Once that shortage exists because of creating that first airwing of a particular class of airplane, the heavy fighter class of airplane for example, AI countries will sense the shortage, and be potentially willing to lend lease you that particular class of airplane, until a shortage no longer exists, whereupon the AI country won't send you that class of airplane anymore, until a shortage exist again of that class of airplane and you again ask for that class of airplane.

I think if you want to play the nations from BFB, you should try Ottoman Empire as Turkey, Byzantine Empire as Greece or Third Bulgarian Empire as Bulgaria. They are the most agressive of the campaings. Good video!

For nations with little to no factories, it can be better to research military things first and later start on construction and production once you get some focuses/conquest done

The Checkz in the mail yeah? ah come on someone had to say it,😛
this should be interesting for sure. the anschluus is coming which means a much wider border
Im almost of the opinion you should bulldoze hungary and take them entirely. you could sweep them pretty fast and take budapest whicn would give you a nice round belly instead of a narrow one, also a lot of resources and manpower.
either way lets see what happens best of luck mark
    and happy new years 😸
