5 CHEAPER Alternatives To The Best Expensive Fragrances

  • Well...let's try this a different way.
    I was hoping that more folks would take to the previous video in this series ( • 5 Niche Alternatives T... ), but that was not the case.
    And I understand why--niche fragrances can be expensive. But in my opinion, if you love a scent, then it is worth the price (within reason)...but I cannot impose that sentiment upon anyone.
    So instead, we're taking the opposite approach--I'm going out on a limb and recommending alternatives to some of my favorite niche fragrances...ones that I suggest often.
    This video does not negate my outstanding recommendations on these niche fragrances, but rather it offers some gateway fragrances that may hopefully lead you to be interested in my niche recommendations if you haven't yet tried them.
    Again, I'm trying to bridge the gap.

    Sometimes it is the feel of a fragrance that we appreciate more than the nuances of composition. I think if you want to get that feel, the alternatives are the way to go. If you want to stay in those feels and deepen that, go for the niche experience. You’ll get more refinement and excellent quality.

    Oud Touch is one of the most aggressive fragrances I own. It packs an uppercut of a punch. Room filler, looong scent trail but not for the faint of heart, but it really shines in cold weather in a leather jacket. Easily beast mode: 12+ hours on my skin

    The problem lot of the time is that folks do sample lot's of niche FRAGRANCES " and could definitely find the scent amazing!!!!
    But unfortunately it's a big difference from spending 20 to 30 dollar's on a niche decant from buying a full bottle ranging from 200 to 400 dollar's! Especially when it comes to the working class who have other priorities like bill's to pay and the economic situation now isn't the greatest time to be splurging on hundreds of dollars on fragrances lol lol lol

    • @stayfreshproductions
      @stayfreshproductions  Před 2 lety +7

      Even a decant can be enough! Full bottles can definitely be expensive. But if you run out of a decant of a niche fragrance you love, it might be worth forgoing a few cheaper purchases and saving up for the full bottle.

      If it's a problem to spend hundreds of dollars on a full bottle, you're probably also better off not sampling a bunch of decants for 30-40 dollars. 10 samples also cost 300-400 dollars then AND these don't come with an guarantee you'll actually love the fragrances If you love a cheaper fragrance, that's fine. Rock that stuff and be happy. But if you sampeld a more expensive one, it is just perfect for you and you have a small collection, better to buy a bottle of that one, than to sample 10 others. And with a bigger collection, a decant can last quite a long time. If samples are crazy expensive or impossible to get, then shop on. Blind buying expensive bottles is always a bad idea.

    Great video! Thank you...although I choked on my coffee when the "cheaper alternative" was a Tom Ford. But hey, no lies detected. I've gotta get down with some of these Cartiers you often recommend. Im always sitting on a full cart about to pull the trigger and wander off to fragrantica to see comments that say their longevity is equal to juicy fruit gum. I suppose there's a time and place for that...but I still can't help but think that I should buy only big longevity. I bet you would like Detour Noir by Haramain or Perlador Borouj. Better than the inspiration!

    I'm surprised Détour Noir by Haramain for a Layton clone was not mentioned. I'd have to say, out of all the different clones I've smelled and own its one of the best, if not best 1 to 1 I've ever smelled. Price is great, quality, longevity and projection. Smelling them both off test stripe_ I can't find a notable difference in any area. I wish all clones where this good!

      My goal was not to use clones as the alternatives, but rather fragrances that carry a similar vibe. In terms of a cheaper alternative in my collection that fill the bill, for Layton it happened to be an inspired fragrance that came the closest.

    Just sampled that Oud Galore and it was not what I expected at all, but in the best way possible. Though it is powerful and undeniably dark and sexy, it was very accessible. It almost has a effervescence to it that - even though it's bold and different - made it very "designery" in a way. It had that pop to it, if you know what I mean. I think it would be a great intro into niche ouds.

  • @noeidee924
    @noeidee924 Před 2 lety +1

    I have smelled both Cartiers that you mentioned but I prefer the Pasha De Cartier edition Noir more. Might buy a full bottle soon.
    As for your previous format, I think one of the reasons why it didn’t get the traction you were hoping for it is that for newbies who are open to testing out niche, getting a niche version of the designer you love or have in your collection is a bit redundant if you are just starting this hobby or vice.
    I love Mancera and I love Vetiver. I was so excited and planned to get Vetiver Sensuel but after testing the sample I realized that it has an almost identical vibe to Terre De Hermés. With this I decided not to get a full bottle.
    This new format is different in a sense that for those newbies who are tired of blue fragrances and want to venture into niche but can’t still figure out what their tastes are, niche like designer offerings can offer a bridge.

    Hey Justin, been a fan since 2020. I really appreciate your work. I have a question though: So far I have not bought an entire bottle but focussed primarily on samples. How do you decide which size you're buying (when you want to have a collection and not just one fragrance for all situations)? Usually, you save money when you buy the bigger size. But does it make sense to always buy one of the bigger sizes? For example, I like Dior Eau Savage and Beau De Jour by Tom Ford. They are not completely identical but somewhat similar, at least in my humble opinion. I don't want to have a super big collection but I do like variety for a variety of seasons and occasions. I would love to hear your opinion. I hope I was able to explain my "problem" and I apologize for the long post. Cheers and kind regards from Germany.

    • @stayfreshproductions
      @stayfreshproductions  Před 2 lety +8

      Hello Alexander, thank you for the kind words and for your support.
      To put it simply, if you plan on having a collection of 20 or more full bottles, getting the largest size never saves money. You spend more money for it, and you have a lesser chance of actually finishing the bottle because of how large it is and the fact that you’ll be wearing other fragrances.
      If you plan on having maybe only 5-10 bottles tops, then the largest size is reasonable. I hope this helps.

Niche fragrances are expensive yes but alot of people keep on buying cheapies after cheapies when maybe they should restrain themselves for a while to get the real deal.
    Best case in point is the notorious Aventus, seeing people buy quite literally dozens of subpar clones they could've just get the real deal - 100ml bottles last ages/possibly a lifetime if you have a collection.

    Well, you tried to spread The Gospel of Niche, can't say you haven't been giving it your best shot, haaha :D. I'm a member of your long-time converted congregation here, so I'm always going to follow your train of thought and aesthetic direction here, but....I love a bargain too. I find it confounding when a cheaper, mass market designer fragrance performs better than a high end niche house fragrance. It's infuriating. I'd love to know more about the technical side of this phenomenon; why can't they inject some firepower into the niche fragrances to make them have greater tenacity and a more impressive projection?! It has nothing to do with money and budgetary considerations and everything to do with the technical side of composing fragrances: if you can sell a fragrance for 60 quid and have it positively SING off the epidermis then I KNOW it's not to do with pricing of ingredients. Other than that, I know nothing. Is it considered vulgar to make anything other than short lived skin scents in the $200+ price point? I don't get it. What am I really paying for? How are these fragrances actually intended to function, y'know, when you look at them as olfactory accessories and consider how most consumers want their fragrances to work for them after they've sprayed them and left the house?
    PS= Halfeti Cedar: your description= SOLD. Will check it out on my day off work next week, sounds gorgeous. I love the original Halfeti but holy smokes, your description of the Cedar version, wow!!

      Very well said! I am one that loves the smell of niche fragrances but can’t pull the plug on spending that amount of money, especially on some that their longevity is just sub par for what you’re paying for. Roja Elysium for example, is a beautiful scent and one of my faves, but doesn’t last as long for the price. So we ask ourselves, is it worth just buying for the name or possibly just a little smoother scent , or is buying a fragrance at a fraction of the cost that may smell 75-90% the same but out performs the niche is the best way to go? 🤔

    • @ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293
      @ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 Před 2 lety +3

      @@martinoquendo4051 Oh, Martin don't even get me started on Roja fragrances and their dreadful longevity and projection. I love the Engima Pour Femme Parfum (not the Essence, the original parfum) and it's priced just under 400 pounds! That's not US dollars, that's in UK POUNDS! And it just dissolves and disappears entirely after half an hour or so. Many people have this complaint against Roja, so I know it's not just me. You have to smash your nostrils right up against your skin to smell so many of these high priced niche fragrances and if that's their idea of 'longevity' they can stick it. Why last for ages on skin as an olfactory shadow, a whisper that lingers but can barely be detected?! That's not the kind of longevity I'm after at that price point, y'know, like some drunk party guest who won't get the hint and go home already, just loitering and slurring and just...being there whilst also NOT being there, if you know what I mean. Hahaha. If you're going to stick around, don't loiter in some insipid ghostly way, really BRING IT, y'know? Longevity at a low hum is a total joke; longevity with some fullness and volume is what I'm after. I feel the same as you about forking out for high priced full bottles and tend to curate a collection very slowly; not cos I'm cheap but because I feel disappointed by so many fragrances when 'test driving them' and not going by superficial first appraisals alone. I'd love to know which fragrance impresses you and gives YOU the longevity and sillage you're after. :)

As for my fragrance of choice, I have a bunch, but call me crazy maybe, but I have two from DUA fragrances that are called Royal Elixer and Ottoman Drowned in Vanilla that both project heavily and smell amazing. They literally last 12+ hours. I do have faves like Nishane Ani, PDM Layton, YSL Tuxedo, ADG Promfumo, YSL La Nuit De Lomme, and Club de Nuit Intense. As a sleeper for the cold, I like to wear Burouj Perlador, which smells like PDM Carlisle. It will last 15-20 hrs for $50. Some ppl might frown upon wearing a clone or buying decants, but why not have multiple fragrances for the cost of just one? And the funny thing is, is that a lot of clone houses, such as DUA or Alexandria, make their fragrances so well, that their sillage and longevity last way longer than the super expensive niche and some designers and smell almost exactly like the original. At the end of the day, the person standing around you that enjoys how you smell, doesn’t care what house of fragrance that you’re wearing, or possibly know. It’s the experience of smelling good for yourself and knowing that others think you smell good as well is why we all go crazy buying so many fragrances. I’m not a huge frag head yet but I like whatever makes me feel good and I can afford , whether it’s niche or not. 😁

      @@martinoquendo4051 Thanks for your long reply Martin. I'm evangelical about long comments and trying to encourage more people not to be shy about letting it rip. Long comments are the way to go; there's plenty of room to flap your wings a few times instead of chirp a couple of sentences through the cage bars. I just don't get this unspoken social media diktat that comments should only be three sentences and two emojis otherwise they're obnoxiously confrontational and self-indulgent. Er, riiiiiiiight. It's fine to interact like that if you're 15 but otherwise...oh dear. So thank you for actually sharing something of value with a definite personality showing through. Even though I am not interested in clone houses, I loved reading your enthusiastic suggestions-- Ottoman Drowned in Vanilla is the best fragrance name I've heard in a long while.

      You're right--many niche fragrances seem to underperform compared to designers...but in my experience, that is the minority. Most niche fragrances I've come across WAY outperform the average designer scent. I'd be curious to know which ones you've tried that did not last. And which ones you've tried that do!
      Here are some niche houses that are known for their strong performance across just about all of their offerings:
      Nishane
      Amouage
      Unique'e Luxury
      Xerjoff
      Jovoy
      Manos Gerakinis
      Parfums de Nicolai

      If you go read the reviews for it on Fragrantica, you’ll see that everyone has one. Some of them align with yours, and some of them don’t.
      To be transparent, this is an old video. My taste has changed. I like this fragrance, but I no longer love it enough to wear it, which is why you’ll never see it in my recent content.
      But more importantly, have you asked yourself why such an emotional response was elicited out of you over such a trivial matter as a fragrance, to the point where you felt compelled to leave a negative comment? Did you feel better after typing it than you did beforehand?
