    That’s really nice. I still don’t understand how major brands haven’t created a hub where we can put the phone and attach everything that we need.

      This. Between Smallrig, Beastgrip, and Kondor Blue, there's plenty of focus on lens/filters for the camera, a few slots to hold a camera and a light, but the external battery and SSD feels like an afterthought.

    • @reid_c_
      @reid_c_ Před 4 měsíci +5

      Potential solution is USB-C adapter with four ports, then getting a USB-C to AUX splitter (like the Rode AI-Micro) then an USB-C to HDMI for monitoring. The third would be for a SSD. Some adapters have passthrough charging, so I would check for one with this in the fourth port. You'd end up with a chord ridden mess, but then again what rig isn't lol.
      I think Michael is going for more run and gun rig, but I do wish more CZcamsrs would focus on more Cinema standard rigs like with the BTS of the Apple event. So many CZcamsrs did videos on what that rig COULD'VE been yet no one I can find has made a video on actually making one of these rigs.
      I love the rig Michael made, but I agree that this adapter is not the best. Definitely not trusting 4k 60 ProRes LOG to a SD card, but thats just me 🤷

    • @paulengle5784
      @paulengle5784 Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@reid_c_ spot on. Having the 4-way splitter definitely gives you a 1.) external power, 2.) ssd recording, and two free usb-c slots.
      I just picked up a Brandon Li mobile video kit for my 15 pro max and I may look at a cheese plate and rails to see if there’s a way to keep the SSD recoding/external power off.
      For some people, a mic and light is the only thing they need when capturing video. If I choose HEVC/h265, I can record for hours, but I’m not sure what image quality/color grading latitude I’m sacrificing for a smaller file size.

      Sorry to hijack this conversation - anyone knows if recording directly to SSD/External storage via Blackmagic is only limited to ProRes or could we just shoot lower settings like 4K 30fps or Cinematic mode as well? 😊

    • @reid_c_
      @reid_c_ Před 2 měsíci

      @@bradleylai4547Recording onto an external storage system using the iPhones native camera app is restricted to ProRes at the moment, which is honestly pretty dumb imo
      To record in H.264 (file format the native app uses), you’d need to use a third party recording software such as Blackmagic Cam and configure the recording format and file destination in the settings
      Unfortunately this means no Cinematic mode, but if you’re looking for that shallow depth of field, consider doing it naturally by using your 85mm lens or purchasing a third party lens to attach to your camera
      Also know that you DONT need bokeh to tell a good story, it’s just a tool to enhance it. If it’s more worth it to have half decent artificial DOF, go for it :) but if you’d rather have full manual control over your camera settings with a third party app, it won’t hurt your content/film to not have DOP if your lighting, camera work, and script are solid :)

      nice Setup, but the specs of the Hub may be too slow for the direct recording to external drive.
      220 MB/s is required by apple, the Iphone supports up to 10 Gbit/s speeds but the Hub only support 5 Gbit/s. Furthermore the SD Slot only provide 104 MB/s. Thats less than the half of the required Speed no matter what class of SD Card will get put in.

Wondering if its just a problem with a wireless charger?

I plan to do a lot of adventure, diy, and outdoors videography and was wondering if I should just get the bare cage with the nd filter and see if I need anything or if there is a clear option for which I should start with. Cool video, but I'll just keep using my DJI Pocket 3 since you get everything in one small package, including internal connection for 2 DJI Mic 2's without the transmitter. I will use my iPhone 15 Pro Max for handheld shooting with little to no accessories since it's a pain in the ass to mount anything without a cage and a bunch of shit dangling and sticking out from it. I guess if you already have the phone and don't wanna spend the cash on the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 creator combo and an additional DJI Mic 2, then you can rig out the phone instead on the cheap.

    It's becoming a real question for me if adding additional external storage using SD cards or Type B CF cards is economical vs just getting larger RAM memory on the iPhone when purchased. The only "fly in the ointment" so to speak is that faster external storage is required for SOME resolutions and frame rate combos on the Blackmagic Cam IOS app. My iPhone 15 pro has about 412GB currently free which can store about 85 minutes worth of Apple ProRes 4K 422 HQ at 24fps (not log) - doable but not ideal

      probably not with the right angle adapter, you'd have to have some sort of cable and attach the hub to the power bank instead.

    I had been thinking about a MicroSD card solution with 1TB worth of storage but it turned out that it was too slow - turns out 220 Mb/s write Speeds are required for ProRes LOG so that solution was out, the other issue was just the very high cost of quality SD storage. So now I'm looking at a USB4 CFexpress 4.0 Type B Card Reader with ProGrade Digital 1TB CFexpress Type B Memory Card (Gold) that could hold 3 hours and 25 minutes of of 4K video in Rec709. It features super super fast read and write speeds too BUT the issue remains cost - about $500 in total. Measuring 3.1 x 3.1 x 0.9 inches I think it might just very well fit your rig design. • @reid_c_
      @reid_c_ Před 4 měsíci

      In the Rode Central app you can configure your Wireless PRO to record internally while outputting an audio signal. As for recording onto the SD card, as long as your footage is recording onto the SD card, your audio will record onto that clip. Be sure to check your settings in your recording app of choice (FilmicPro, BMCam, etc.) that your audio source is your Wireless PRO

    Man, I want to buy the iPhone filmmaking guide, but I'm stuck in a hell loop of resetting my password/error when resetting password.
    Super disappointing.

    I don't understand why we buy so many things to attach to our phones that are so big and no more compact than a professional camera. I mean, if I was that passionate about photography and videography, I would invest in the camera, not the accessories.

      Everyone’s shooting style and workflow is different. I used to be on your side of thinking. But especially with the latest Apple LOG on iPhone 15 pro it’s a truly capable camera.
      One perspective you may want to consider is what other camera can you shoot, edit and post all on one device. For efficiencies sake it is far superior than dedicated cameras 🤷🏻‍♂️

      As someone who has done photo and video work with a professional camera - I still use my phone for a number of reasons:
      -the phone is going to be on me anyway, so really Im just packing any accessories I need. my phone + cage + handle is still lighter/more flexible than my main camera.
      -if I am recording in a situation where I need to be discreet, there are times people are more accepting of phone recording than a big mirrorless camera, even if I have a small cage attached to the phone. Additionally some venues wont even let me bring the camera in at all.
      -some companies actually desire the "phone" look for things like social media.
      Different tools for different things. Additionally, experimentation is fun. Sometimes it's nice just to see how far you can take something.

      I’m a director and prefer to work with a capable DP. But labor plus gear is expensive. So in between bigger shoots I like to make small projects, but don’t want to invest time and money into a $2500+ camera that I still have to learn to use when I can use the thing I already have in my pocket and spend a few hundred bucks on accessories.

    Dare I say that in the iPhone 16 they need to add an internal recessed microSD card slot to eliminate all these janky "minimalist" rigs for storage. All the other parts are well constructed, but there is no escaping the Jerry-rigged USB storage solution. None of them are better than if Apple simply put in a tiny card slot.

    • @initialfocus
      @initialfocus  Před 5 měsíci

      Knowing Apple though they’d make some sort of proprietary micro SSD card thing like a RED minimag that costs $1,000 😅

    • @billyoung9538
      @billyoung9538 Před 5 měsíci

      @@initialfocus That mostly worked for Red when there was less competition. I think Apple's more likely to make iPhones with larger internal memory options before they would go to a proprietary media. It's hard to say, but I think if they went with a proprietary media they would find it an unprofitable venture as long as USB-C remains an option, and I doubt they will step backwards on that front.

    Is there a way to have a magsafe power supply like a bank on there?

    • @ryancooper3629
      @ryancooper3629 Před 5 měsíci

      probably not with the right angle adapter, you'd have to have some sort of cable and attach the hub to the power bank instead.
      That said, iPhones trying to record and do inductive charging at the same time overheat quite quickly so I don't think it would be desirable.
