I'm a former keeper and think a goalkeeper should be allowed to make a reasonable step (without foot on the line). But what Dudek did that day. Well in the end it doesn't really matter.
Even as a United fan I was happy for Liverpool when they won, and especially Dudek, he was like a superhero in that game. They definitely deserved the win. One of the most exciting and iconic matches in football history.

@@tousjapin It was one penalty, and also, it wasn't a rule back then. Obviously, you shouldn't be in the face of the shooter, but you could be a few cm in front of the line

As long as i can remember this rule about gk leaving the goal line was added years ago, still referees at the time never punished the gks for doing it. For example in 2003 (2 years prior) this rule was warned by fifa, in the Intercontinental cup match between milan boca, both gks took 3 or 4 steps forward every time (dida included). So in resumee, yes it wasnt allowed to step outside the goal line, but at the same time, referees didnt care about and it was only mentioned by the media.
