Lake Bratan and Lake Tamblingan, Bali - mystical temples, lush rainforest and a quiet mountain lake

- Today we drive through the mountainous highlands in the north of Bali. Our first stop is at the sacred mountain lake Danau Bratan (Lake Bratan). The important water temple Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is located directly on the bank. We then discover mighty strangler figs and mystical shrines on a short hike through the mountain rainforest. The trail ends on the shores of the tranquil Danau Tamblingan (Lake Tamblingan). There we get into traditional wooden canoes and let ourselves be rowed to the Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan temple near Gubug.
Lake Bratan, or Lake Beratan, lies at an altitude of 1200 m in the middle of the gigantic collapsed caldera of an ancient volcano. It is the second largest lake in Bali and plays an important role in the irrigation of central Bali. On the shore of the lake lies one of the most beautiful temples on the island, namely the water temple Pura Ulun Danu Bratan (or Beratan). The temple was built in the 17th century as a Hindu-Buddhist temple on offshore islands and is dedicated to the sea goddess Dewi Danu. The two shrines in the lake are now one of the most photographed subjects in Bali.
The largest part of the temple complex is located on the bank in the middle of well-kept gardens and is very spacious. In addition to the various temple buildings, there are also restaurants and a children's area, so that the area is reminiscent of an amusement park in places. And we're not the only visitors! Today is a holiday. In addition to the tourists, many Balinese people also came to pray. They are elegantly dressed in Balinese costume and fill the temples to capacity and beyond. This reminds us again how important religion is for the Balinese.
We drive a few kilometers further. Then a stairway begins next to the road, on which we descend into the forest accompanied by a local guide. It's very quiet here, luckily the hordes of tourists are elsewhere! Soon the lush vegetation thins out and we come across one of the many small temples that exist here in the forest and on the banks of the crater lakes. We dive back into the forest and admire the lush ferns, orchids and, above all, the mighty strangler figs. These plants are very impressive, they form both delicate works of art and true wooden buildings. Our hiking trail ends on the shores of the Danau Tamblingan crater lake. Here is the Pura Dalem Tamblingan temple with its eleven-tiered meru tower. It probably dates from the 10th century.
We climb the last steps down to the lake. Lake Tamblingan is the fourth largest lake in Bali. We are still at around 1000 m altitude, the atmosphere is mystical, cloudy and peaceful. There is no big tourist crowd here. There are no motorboats on the lake either; we continue in traditional wooden canoes. We are rowed across the lake and once again enjoy the peace and quiet.
Finally we land on the southwest shore of the lake. The Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan temple from the 10th century is located here. Only a few tourists can be seen. But there are even more locals here. They have put on their traditional clothing and enter the old, partly overgrown temple. Behind the temple the mist rises from the forests. This is the magic of Bali!
