- The Norwegian Railway Museum boasts one of the world's oldest, most intact, and operational vintage trains. The journey of restoration began in 1988 when the Friends of the Railway Museum conceived the idea to revive a historic carriage train. After six years of meticulous restoration work, the locomotive "Caroline" roared back to life in the spring of 1996, just in time for the museum's centenary celebration.
Since its revival, the train has been a focal point of the museum's activities, embarking on two to four annual excursions to Elverum, with occasional side trips to Eidsvoll/Lillestrøm in 2004, Kongsvinger in 2004, Flisa in 2010 and 2015, and the Lillestrøm-Kongsvinger route in 2012. It even ventured beyond Norwegian borders for a guest appearance at the Swedish Railway Museum in Gävle in 2006.
Typically, the carriage train undertakes three journeys per year, shuttling passengers between Hamar and Elverum. However, its operational range is restricted by its maximum speed of 60 km/h, achievable only on downhill stretches. This speed limit dictates the sections of track it can traverse. Additionally, the train's mobility is contingent upon the availability of a turntable to maneuver the locomotive.
Fully assembled, comprising the locomotive, a goods wagon, and six carriages, the train spans approximately 70 meters in length.

What an absolutely wonderful thing to see such an early train out on the line and not sleeping in the museum, an excellent video thank you.
It seems that the train sleeps in the museum and sometimes enjoy a ride
Man, seeing a standard gauge locomotive from 1861 running on the main line is just gloriously beautiful
Truly, it is wonderful to see.
It really is, especially with our own victorian railways Y112 running about on the mainline every now and then.
@@buzzytrains9037 I wish I could see her in action, here in Queensland there’s a loco called No.6 (the one In my PFP) which sadly isn’t running due to covid (I think) and the rising cost of basically, everything, but I am looking forward to seeing her turn 160 next year.
And at a pretty decent clip, too! ~25 mph in that first clip (assuming a driver diameter of 4'-6"--I'm not sure what they actually measure)
@@Yarf.McBarf damn for a over 150 year old loco, she’s going a pretty good speed
Это что-то нереальное, я сначала подумал, что это на компьютере нарисовано. Какая работа! Сохранить такую реликвию в таком состоянии! Моё глубокое почтение
163 years old and still going! Old Robert Stephenson knew a thing or two about building locomotives.
Yep, but only one or two things😂😂😂
What a old, little, shiny, and cute steam engine! And it sounds so happy too! I love it!!
Its not crawling along either, you guys are really hauling it! Love to see it!
Hard to believe that locomotive is 40 years away from being 200!
Awesome! I absolutely love the early steam locomotives, and Caroline is a gem! She looks and runs like brand new. This is time travel- that beautiful locomotive hauling an equally venerable train jauntily through the countryside, just as if it were still the 1860's. Flawless. Thanks for posting this!
Long live Norway! 🇳🇴
What a beautiful engine in such pristine working order!
Refreshing to see an engine that age being appropriately worked, rather than babied with only a coach or two.
Casey Jones better watch his speed on this little guy!
Incredible heritage in motion. Long train for such a small loco, amazing. It's like seeing a Stirling Single on the UK mainline.
What a beautiful locomotive and train. 3 cheers to the people that maintain them. It looks like it gets a lot of loving care.
I remember when that engine was fresh out of the workshops in 1861, in fact, I was the one who drew up the Lego set instructions to build him.
What a gem this loco and its train are, she sounds gorgeous!!
Was that a traverser taking the loco out of the shed? Yep. We still have one here in Ipswich but it is in the old Norwegian 3"6" gauge like most of Queensland Australia. Our oldest loco still running is the 1864 2-4-0, it make the same sort of noise. Lots of respect to those keeping these old things working.
A beautiful little locomotive puffing away in some beautiful landscapes with her adorable coaches. Excellent
I just had to watch again! Magic!❤
Absolutely stunning... Wow! 1861 unbelievable.
Caroline is such a pretty locomotive and she has much pulling power; A lot of love has gone into the restoration work, along with the coaches.
The long shots of the train traveling through the snowy landscape reminded me of the train scenes in "Dr Zhivago".
Well done to all involved.
Thank you for posting.😊
Wow, what an amazing engine and train
Thankyou from Australia. Excellent cinematography and so pleasurable to see the old working locomotive and carriages. The museum is indicative of the persistence of the Norwegian people.
Lovely restoration and video. I thought we in UK had some of the best restored trains but we have nothing like this on our main lines. What an exhilarating journey it must of been.
What a wonderful little engine and carriages. A remarkable thing to see.
2024/04/26: My first view of Caroline. This is AMAZING.
Caroline is friend-shaped!
Fantastic .... brilliant .... thank you so much!👍
If No.17 were a kitten or puppy, youd be up to 10m views by the end of today .... it's that cute!! That cab cannot be much larger (or much more complicated) than 3'-6" gauge Alf's.
And those carriages .... the 4w ones remind me of those built in the UK for the North London Railway, way back in the 1860s. Superb restorations.
And that traverser ... I've never seen one like it.
The Norwegian Railway Museum just made my "bucket list"!! 🙂
Wow!!!! What an absolutely delightful engine. She is beautiful !!
What a beautiful beast of fire, steal, and PSI
What a charming sight! Glorious! Such a dinky little locomotive, almost like a toy, and in beautiful condition! ❤😊
And the beautiful carriages too.
Yes indeed, those too! Totally un realistic, but wouldn’t be nice if railways had stayed like this!❤️
What a little beauty!!
What a beauty!, Didn't know that Norway had one of the oldest operational locomotives, and it also runs on the mainline as well.
I believe India has one 6 years older called Fairy Queen. I’m presently unsure if it’s still in operation however
@@Aaron-uf3sl I have seen videos of Fairy Queen in operation, as of 2022 she was still operational, she is the oldest being from 1855. Another locomotive a few years older and operational is locomotive no. 28 'Genf' of the Swiss Central Railway or SCB, she is from 1858 and also has outings on the network sometimes.
Absolutely delightful!! Encore!! 👏👏😃
RIDICULOUSLY CUTE! The Titfield Thunderbolt lives!
Thank you so much for this video. Doesn't she look so wonderful chuffing cleanly through the snowy landscape. The locomotive is so beautiful with all the gleaming brass and intricate lining. The coaches are as neat as a pin too. I have never seen such an early locomotive running so freely on the main line. It could have been 1861. 😊❤
Amazing locomotive - and glorious filming of the train steaming through the landscape too. Incredible to realise Caroline (from Robert Stephenson & Co) is only 32 years younger than Stephenson's Rocket!
Lovely setup! Just wonderful, such a joy to see!
This is great very little is preserved from that era.
i took a ride on Caroline in 2019, and it was fantastic! she is a fantastic locomotive. Veldig fin video forresten!
This is a journing into the stories of great literature and fine clothing. The feeling that we are seeing visions of the past was undeniable. How lucky they are to have saved one.
Fabuleux ! Merci à toute l'equipe d'exister Longue vie à votre Projet Artistique 😵💫👏❤
Chouette petite locomotive!!!
Toute mignonne et qui fait bien du gaz.😊😊😊😊
What a free steaming locomotive. Brilliant.
Fantastic! My mother's great great uncle (and his brothers) worked for NER and Robt Stephenson Works in the 1870s - 1890s. I follow in their footsteps in signalling. lWow! I'd love to see that running in Norway.
Herlig film, Petter! Stemningsfullt! Og for en langbeint og elegant dame...!! (Lokomotivet altså...!)
❤❤❤ پاکستان زندہ باد ❤❤❤
A perfect blend of functionality and elegance.
Wow, fantastic! Riding that train for those people would be comparable our riding on a supersonic airliner.
thank you all .
Such a wonderful machine!
I'm genuinely impressed that such a small locomotive was able to pull such a long rake of coaches at that speed. Beautifully done!
Merci à la Norvège pour ces belles images! Génial! Stéph.
Takk til Norge for disse vakre bildene! Helt fantastisk! Stéph.
Thanks to Norway for these beautiful images! Just great! Stéph.
IT’S ALIVE!!! 🤩🚂🚃
Gt on the Snow too. The film ,The Train , comes to mind A Classic like this
Thank you for showing !!! 😍
What a beauty and incredibly smooth running.
The Most Beautiful train i have ever seen
Gorgeous train and an excellent video overall. Thank you so much for sharing!
Love the architecture of the brick storage garage!
very neat! That scenery looks like my neighbourhood, except I'm in Canada! same trees and hills and snow.
Greetings from Ireland. this is Superb 🛤️🚂😊
wow she can move!
The scenery makes everything beautiful
Now that is cool as heck, i have such a soft spot for these 150+ year old trains and seeing them operate in 2024 is amazing and something i couldnt imagine the builders thinking about when they 1st built that thing
C’est magnifique sous la neige norvégienne !👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
As a train lover, and huge fan of Thomas the tank engine this train is both absolutely gorgeous and full fills the dream that such trains still exist. This CZcams video is truly amazing! I wish I could ride this masterpiece!
Beautiful old machine and carriages. Well done!
Superb
Wonderful video and a great restoration job. Thanks to everyone involved.
VERY SIMPLE AND CUTE DESIGN
AMADA LOCOMOTORA 1861❤
Incredible
It's so much better to see pre-20th century locomotives with the period correct equipment running as they were designed to do. To think that was just a daily occurrence.
You guys did an exzellent Job on the engine and the carriages. Sorry for the driver and fireman. Must be pretty cold on the fireplate.😊
Great locomotives video! Mike from Missouri
Yes in 1966 I travelled from Wellington New Zealand to Auckland and back on a steam train. I can still smell the cinders as we went through the Rimutaka tunnel. These are the only real trains to me.😎
What a Cracking bit of Kit !
Nice, beautiful old locomotive!! Great video, no doubt the old girl has had many overhauls!
When you upgrade your train lines in 1861 in Transport fever 2
Wow how beautiful is that👍
Amazing! How did this cute little 2-4-0 and this antique train survive in operating condition?!
Great video thank you !
Loco reminds me of 'Nellie' Roland Emetts fantasy Engine at the Festival of Britain 1951
Increíble y bella recuperación.
Esto sí es raro de ver.
¡Mi más efusiva enhorabuena a los que lo hacen posible!
Thanks Petter for another great video
Is it possible that Caroline is one of the oldest running locomotives in Europe...? I have never seen such beautiful pictures...
What a cute little thing! The boiler looks about 15" gauge size. Two bogies and four 4 wheelers must be a fair load for something that tiny.
12:13 That looks like so much fun! 👍
Superb video! 👌😊🇨🇦
Excellent video...!
Отличная работа! Продолжайте в том же духе, наследие Стефенсона должно жить❤!
lovely video and a cute train!🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃☺👍
Beautiful!! Mange tusen takk!!
Give me the good old fashioned American steam locomotive whistle anytime! 😊
Man machines really were a work of art back then huh
0) Thank you for sharing this! :-)
1) I could imagine some more opportunity for the public (at Hamar?) to compare the old and the new, both in engine performance (power, speed) and in work (maintenance, firing up, driving, cleaning the fire). I assume that people from Scandinavia can imagine the work (like checking the temperature of the bearings and lubricating them) in bad weather. (I'm in the Netherlands.)
2) The clips of this train running gave me an image of a 19th century story (history? fiction?) in Karl-Ernst Maedel's 1960 book "Geliebte Dampflok": a night train in a snow storm in present-day Poland, with (as I remember it) even less of a cab on the engine and with packs of desparate wolves around. And with brake-men on some of the carriages, without any shelter. - Compare that image to even when RailCowGirl had to stop her freight train on the Bergen line to clean the sticky snow from the wind-screen of her modern electric locomotive.
Stockton Darlington Railway 2025 and Liverpool Manchester Railway in 2030 Twice 200 Birthdays!! Wish vor a Locomotive Parade! Come back to England Caroline!
Super film! Good to see such a lovely little locomotive alive and well - and the coaches are interesting, too - the four-wheelers are very similar to English stock of the 1870s. The tiny shunting tractor is a gem as well.
Well it's an Stephenson's & co
@@LasVegar Indeed, and not unlike some English locomotives of the 1860s, though I think ours usually had smaller cabs!
Admiro muito essa conservação de equipamentos tão antigos, isso é história viva para nós que nascemos depois daquela época.
Parabéns pelo vídeo!🇧🇷
awww yeah!! that's what I'm talking about
This is amazing that they have this machine preserved and in running condition! Super rare!
Wonder why did they connect heavier 4 axle coaches after 2 axle coaches that are lighter. Normally they do other way around.
That small open cab for winter rides.... LOL! I guess the engineers could only dream about fully enclosed spacious cab later locomotives had offered.
Locomotiva stupenda
Fantastic🎉😍
