You should use the storage tray any time you have a space there and putting it on the slot doesn't trigger an ability. You can always move them out later. Similarly you should trigger the Jack if you have two empty storage slots because you can store the dice if you don't want to use them immediately

in principle it does look like a pretty fun core gameplay loop
may be a bit simple to make the optimal decision (at a given time with the limited knowledge u can have whats ahead) after playing for a while i feel 🤔
