You might not have heard of Fisker yet, but the company is being touted as the next Tesla - if they can navigate their way through some choppy financial waters and finally get production started. The Ocean SUV is due in the UK next year and is a truly innovative electric car. This is the company’s second model and it looks like another peach - it’s the Pear.
Fisker has revealed more details its ‘city car’, which is due to follow the bigger Ocean SUV into production in 2025. It will have two battery choices, giving claimed ranges of 198 or 320 miles range and a starting price which undercuts a Corsa Electric at £30,900.
The Pear will be built in the US in collaboration with Foxconn, the company which is best known for its huge iPhone assembly factories in China. It uses a lightweight steel body structure which Fisker claims uses 35% fewer parts than a conventional electric car. But that doesn’t mean it's a small car, and at 4,550mm it’s actually longer than a Nissan Qashqai
Besides its lightweight and cheap-to-manufacture structure and drivertrain, the Pear features numerous clever features to make life easier for urban drivers. These include a bootlid which slides down into the back bumper, an insulated ‘frunk’ for keeping takeaways warm and a van-like bench front seat which turns it into a six-seater.
Join Ginny as she takes a closer look at the Pear for the first time and delivers the Electrifying.com verdict. What do you think of the Fisker? As always, we love to hear your comments so get typing below.

I sure hope this makes it to market. Here in the US we miss out on a many or most of the nice smaller EVs. I currently have a 2017 Kia Soul EV and love it... but wouldn't mind more range and was saddened that the new Soul never came to us... same with the VW ID 2ALL and so many others. a year and a half wait though is a while for a company teetering on bankruptcy; I do hope it makes it!

I wish them well. A local (at the time) high volume Ford dealer had eight Fisker Karma on the lot when I was helping a friend shop for a new car about a decade ago. The fit and finish was awful and it was way overpriced back then. Hopefully if/when it comes to America they won't repeat some of Tesla's mistakes. Use real buttons/dials/switches for basic controls and have actual quality control so they aren't three different shades/textures of paint and the panels are properly aligned and don't leak or rattle. Function needs to start trumping form if EVs are going to gain wider acceptance faster. "Normal" people don't like it when basic things like door handles that work in winter, fog lights, glove boxes, and rear wipers are removed from a car simply to save the manufacturer money to the detriment of the user. My friend ended up buying an Acura that she still owns BTW.

Yeah, removing the rear wiper is insane from all of these SUV based EVs. Also, I want buttons, I don't like touch screens nor do many buyers I speak with because they find them distracting or hard/confusing to use. Why change a good model that works? My Ford pickup has big dials to turn for heat and radio, that's what the majority of US consumers want based on the F150 being one of the best selling vehicles in the USA.

My only complaint is that it has 20 inch wheels. I really wish that someone would put on a smaller diameter wheel on a modern car. Is there any reason you the larger amount of rolling mass that comes with a larger wheel and tire means less efficiency and larger costs down the road because buying a 20 inch tire is not an inexpensive proposition. I realize electric cars weigh more than their internal combustion engine counterparts and that means needing larger brakes. But, if I gigantica American pickup truck can make do with smaller brakes of less than 15 in I'm entirely certain Fisker or anyone else could as well.

I think that parking half a metre further from a wall or car behind would be a small price to pay for a "regular" hatch rear and that cost saving can then come off the price tag (and it would probably avoids a future reliability issue).

    • @howertingsyaboya3789
      @howertingsyaboya3789 Před 10 měsíci +2

Fisker needs first to prove that they can mass produce a car. He is good at raising money, that is for sure. Looks all nice on paper even if this averagely build prototype (hatch misalignment, dull interior), needs to prove its quality. Volvo, even if the EX30 is produced by Geely, has a more sustainable approch and a manufacturing track record.

This makes no financial sense considering Tesla has been doing this for 12 years and is probably the only EV manufacturer able to turn a profit on it's cars. I think the Pear will cost with the cheapest equipment 27.000€ and with the Ultra Package it would be 37.000€. When then teh Solar Roof comes into we would be at 41.000€! This is not that cheap! And the cheapest will not have the Foldable Seats wich will fold to a flat sleeping bed! But i think its a good Car! I wish to have a small car where i can sleep in!

A local Ford dealer had eight Fisker Karmas in a row when I was helping a friend car shop about a decade ago. The fit and finish was awful. And those were production cars with six figure MSRPs. I would expect ones costing a quarter as much to be even worse. After my friend finished looking the salesman grabbed the fob to one of the Karmas and I still remember how poorly the headliner had been installed. My friend pointed to a crease and hump in it and asked why it was like that. I said "Shit quality control" and both her and the salesman laughed. No need for a test drive.

@@Noah_E the Fisker Ocean production was outsourced to Magna in Austria, who build cars for Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW and have a good reputation for quality... from all reviews so far the fit and finish seems spot on... the Fisker PEAR is being made somewhere else of course, so we will have to see if they keep up the standard (an iphone production line is very different to a car production line!).

Not sure the car market is “ripe” for fruit-named entrants.
I rather think a “Peach” car’s seats would be too fuzzy.
“Apple” cars would be rotten to the core.
“Banana” cars would lack “a peel” and opinions would be “split.”
Finally, a “Cherry” car would simply be the pits.
    😏 (I’ll see myself out…)

I expect a few challenges in the production of the Fisker Pear. Foxconn has never mass produced a car before. Foxconn will also be using an unfamiliar repurposed American factory with US workers and an American supply chain. This business environment is very different from the abundant labor markets, loose labor regulations, lower labor costs, plentiful and dynamically responsive supply chains, and government support Foxconn enjoys in China.
The Fisker Ocean, manufactured by Magna International in their Graz Austria plant, is a very different story. With the Ocean, Fisker is working with an excellent established automotive subsystem supplier and contract manufacturer, in a familiar business environment. Shared German language and culture between Henrik Fisker and Magna's Austria factory may also help establish rapport and ensure common expectations.
I hope to see the Pear in volume on American roads. The more affordable BEVs available, the better. For now, however, I am keeping my expectations very much in check.
