Train Simulator 2021: New Haven Alco DL-109

- Another Alco appears for Train Simulator, let's take a look and see if it'll cut the mustard.
Latest addition to the sim from developer DTM, The Alco DL-109 in several liveries adorned with the appropriate streamlined coach and rolling stock.
Comes with 5 scenarios for the fantastic Springfield Line by VNHRR, Quick Drive compatible, 10 coach variations and 5 loco liveries
The DL-109 was produced by ALCO between 1939 and 1945 for a total of 74 locomotives. Many RR's at the time nabbed one or two of them but the New York, New Haven & Hartford gobbled up the most at a total of 60 units - sporting the snarling 539T prime mover which was a straight 6 cylinder, 4 stroke turbocharged diesel, rated at 2000hp

I really have to say as a huge New Haven Railroad fan, and after waiting months for this thing to be purchasable, I'm honestly not as thrilled as I thought. Almost everyone was saying, "Oh it's a going to be a typical DTM Diesel again", and "I get it's New Haven for VNH-Springield" and yeah, I get it, it's not going to be the best. But after watching the video twice and seeing the full $20 price release page, I think I'm going to wait on buying this, which sucks. Some of the notches weren't actually too bad, but the base idle played the whole time and ruined any point of a "Take away" in retrospective. I feel taking the VNH's base ALCo S-2 switcher sounds and re-coding them to work through this would fit a whole lot better than these sounds we were given. Fun fact, the DL-109 had 2 of those same prime movers inside of them (Which explains the 2 sets of intakes/fans) so they'll at least be more accurate. As for a sound enhancement pack, if anyone wants to beat me to this race, go at it. Sadly, there's better things to put my money toward these days, though first time this goes on sale, oh boy am I getting it, and for the passenger cars mainly. The base VNH passenger cars aren't bad at all, but I'll happily take a wide range of NH's "Aluminum Streamliners" any day in TS. Looking forward to a discount or enhancements to this thing. Sorry, guess it's back to the O Scale models like always for this New Haven historian.
The Rs1 and 2 both sound much better imo, in fact i went and ran both later on and they just do make the *feel* of the sounds much better - provided they are old but the DL109 made almost a decade later in TS is somehow worse. Itd be great having the sounds swapped over & like others have pointed out even the baldwins in the sharknoses seem more appropriate.
I also agree the rolling stock is nice, best thing from the pack imo
Rule #1 for me is always buy DLC on sale. I would love to get the NH I-5 too

I know how you feel about loving Alcos. I had a chance to drive an RS-23 for a few miles and loved every second of it.
Oh wow. That mustve been somthing. Those had a little higher rpm range right, bet it was a helluva noise. Where was this at if you dont mind me asking ?
@@schnauzahpowahz Yeah it was a noisy loco, and It was hard to hear anyone else in the cab. This was the Ontario Southland RR, which operates in St. Thomas, Woodstock and Tillsonburg. They also operate in Guelph Ontario.
What happened was I wrote them an email saying that I was a train simmer, and I wonder if I could possibly ride with them or even drive a loco? I was surprised when the owner of the RR wrote back and said it would be fine but he had to be present in the loco. Needless to say I was rather excited, and at the end of watching the guys doing some switching at a factor. The owner said I could drive the loco back to Salford Ontario which is about 12 miles. At the end of the trip the owner said that I operated the train like I had been doing it all my life. lol That was quite a compliment. Too bad I never had a chance to work on a railroad staring from my younger days, but my life never ended up like that unfortunately. Thank goodness for simulators.

I've got pictures of my dad standing in front of a couple of these at Dover St yard in Boston when he was a little kid in 1959! Btw this game looks like its from 1997...

Looks like they might’ve updated this add on, cause I don’t see that missing texture issue on any of my alcos

@@schnauzahpowahz the recordings used on it are actually from a 539T which is funny, not sure why DTM changed it when they already had one that was good to begin with
You could just import those sounds into this alco. As for the textures, maybe someone at RWA will improve them.

How did you manage to turn on the headlight? In my case I tried to turn on the headlight from the dash and then I tried to turn it on manually but it does not turn on
Honestly, having been waiting for this with excitement and promise for another Alco, I feel just as disappointed. Definitely will have to wait for a sale.
Considering the myriad of S2s still around, I'm surprised they couldn't get better sounds for the prime mover. Plus, the fans at 11:50 don't look like they're mounted to anything, no motor, nothing? (Honestly was kind of off-putting). Even if there was no information on the type of motor or the way it's mounted, I still think most wouldn't mind something fictional, albeit reasonable looking.
There are also quite a bit of single note horns (A200 I think in this case) so there are a few horn samples to choose from.
I can't even begin with the textures either. I know this is a problem with DTM often times, but why is it so shiny? These aren't Amfleets lol. It's even more off with the little bits of weathering. Luckily this is pretty (actually really) easy fix, I'm surprised DTM couldn't just do the alpha texture editing that so many repainters already do to make locomotives not look like they've been doused in water. (When I do purchase this I'm going to completely redo that texturing, and if there isn't a community one available I'll do an RWA release myself).
As for the locomotive and train brake, at this point I honestly think it could be some accidental mistake in scripting, and they assigned the wrong valve for brake type.
The coaches I think will look lovely behind some FL9s or even GG1s on the joint NH/PRR trains of the 50s/60s.
Well said. I actually kinda like the coaches, the physics felt ok as well, notching up, reaching speed and braking. Im shocked as the UP 1st gen Turbs were a step fwd, this is like 2 back.
Gtrax is teasing that ATSF PA on their site, really excited to see what comes of it. Looks stunning
@@schnauzahpowahz I looked at the simulation values, and they're within my acceptable margin of error except for the max tractive effort. That was off by around 3,000 lbf, but everything else was well done. Shame the simulation was done well and not much else.
@@blackbirdgaming8147 i felt the same, it actually seemed ok physics wise. Had the set as a whole looked better visually or sounded better itd have been a 2/3 which is a win imo.
Perhaps this will get an update? Fundamentally, it's a good foundation that could be built upon.
I wonder if they'll fix it as they did with the Santa Fe locomotives
but in all to me the sound isn't always an issue to me it's the way they look and run and what they come with
maybe sometimes the horn and bell but the diesel engine sound doesn't really phase me since I really don't know what their suppose to sound like

The old S2 in TS i think sounded better than the DL109. In fact imo the S2 still holds up in TS, i use it now and again
They gotta get the graphics better on this stuff, even the routes I LOVE this route by graphics are worse then a 2000s Xbox game. Were almost at the point of VR now they should have WAY better looking stuff

It irks the everloving snot out of me how DTM let this pass. While yes, absolutely, it would be ridiculously hard to find sounds from a locomotive no longer around, but reusing already lackluster sounds is just bad taste all around. Not to mention the coloring, another big irk. Move further away and you get that white haze on it. The model itself just seems kinda blocky and chunky honestly, like its nearly 10 years old. Seems Alco has really been overlooked for Railworks, we finally get one and the quality is questionable. Especially when compared to two of the better Alcos available, the RWA RS1 and the S2.
Scale of 1-10 (5 being sale) what would u place this as?
Err, maybe 3 or 4. If you want the decent streamlined & named coaches I'd say go for it, otherwise I'd wait for a sale
