    I am blown away by the illustrations Howard Lyon did for this book. I cannot wait to get my physical copy. I have a quarter of the book left so I should finish today. I have loved this adventure and wish we had more of these type of stories in the cosmere. I know that Secret Project 3 is supposed to be a different voice or tone but also a story being told to us. I love that Sanderson is experimenting with this voice and way of storytelling.

    Oh my gosh, within a chapter or two I was struck by how similar the tone/humor is to Princess Bride... I had no idea it was the inspo going into it, so he really nailed it!! This is only my 3rd Cosmere book (after Warbreaker and Elantris), and I can definitely tell there's things I'm missing, but I don't think this is going to be a tough one to come back to once I'm all caught up. He really just leaned into making a book *fun*. :)

    • @Haxerous
      @Haxerous Před rokem +3

      There's a few things about Realmatics you might miss and a couple of connections to mistborn. Having read Elantris and Warbreaker probably helped you understand the villain's magic. But I wouldn't call anything pre-requisite reading

    • @lieslherman
      @lieslherman Před rokem +2

      @@Haxerous Nope, definitely not! The story itself is totally understandable as is, for sure. I think it's just the occasionally offhand comment Hoid has made so far that makes me "hmm" if it's a reference to another book--but tbh, it may be me reading into things too much, because I'm expecting too many connections, lol. ;)

      Pick up Mistborn - Final Empire. It's a decent start. It's also technically a "standalone" book even though it's part 1 of a trilogy. If you like that book you'll like Brandon Sanderson. IMO that book is a great start to the world of Sanderson.

    Having already read this book, this is an EXCELLENT distillation of the book WITHOUT spoilers. Thank you.
    I love Sanderson's humour, so this was right up my alley. I'm older and read The Princess Bride BEFORE seeing the movie (which is in my Top 5 favourite films of all-time). I also have raised three children, two of them daughters...and I love how Sanderson writes Tress.
    I also love that this story was written to his wife. It has SO much love interweaved within the story.
    I loved it. It will be a book that I will reread many times, even though we dont know how significant this story will be for the Cosmere, but it is just THAT good.
    Lastly, I'm so happy that Brandon Sanderson is going up against Audible and how they are treating Indie Authors on the audiobook side. If anyone can, he's able to do this. I hope that it allows more competition within the market arena...so that fairer wages can be gotten, especially for Indie writers.
    Thank you so much for this wonderful review. Truly appreciate your views and how you present them.
    Again, thank you.

      @@ebnovels - About Audible...it really needs to be done...and I'm SO happy that it is Brandon Sanderson that is leading the way. He's such a special person...and because he's a teacher of future writers, he wants them to succeed in their passion, like he has. I do hope that other well known/successful authors stand behind him on this, too. Time will tell. Audible basically has a monopoly on the market...and will not change UNTIL there are forces that push them to deal equitably with authors, especially Indie Authors.

    The narration style of Hoid reminded me, in part, of the narration style of the Alcatraz series (which I had just finished reading book 4 prior to reading Tress). And both of them are very, very Brandon. Although, Tress wasn't quite so "full-on". It was a little more reserved.
    As soon as the inciting incident happened I was struck by the influences from the Princess Bride - anyone who has seen the movie (or read the book I assume) will pick up on it - but it has such a good spin on it.

    The story was quite charming. I agree that this did read younger and that it certainly has something for all ages. I was concerned at the start with our narrator and wondered if I could read an entire book from his voice, but he took a back seat as the story progressed and only peppered his commentary as needed. (Don’t get me wrong. I am fascinated by him as a character, but his humor doesn’t always land with me.)

I would totally read more on this planet, I need to know what the other 5 or 6 spores do.... and I want to reread it already. I probably will when the physical version comes. Also, I think we had almost exactly the same opinion on where it fits in/potential spoilers for other Cosmere works.

    I haven't gotten to this quite yet. My library hold on audio for Words of Radiance came in...already too drawn into it. Would you say Tress is a "fast" read that you don't realize the page count or is it a normal Sanderson slow burn type feel?
    I am currently marking all the art I want to make as I read the Stormlight Archive...I'm sure I'll be doing some of that for this one too. I keep wanting to do art for Mistborn, but as both a reader and an artist I'm afraid my "interpretation" of what I see in my head goes against others view of characters and I avoid the possibility of the hate....

    • @tgibridays
      @tgibridays Před rokem +1

      I find most of Sanderson's books to be pretty fast reads secret project 1 included. The only exceptions being the Stormlight Archive. Even then the back half is always a fast read for me, but it's definitely a slower burn than his other books.

    • @ebnovels
      @ebnovels  Před rokem +3

    ** spoiler alert ** *Spoilers*
    My thoughts on Tress of the Emerald Sea
    I loved it. I just finished it and immediately went on Goodreads to see what others thought about it. I saw one huge post on it from a reviewer. Although I am not that prolific I will do my best to talk about what I liked most about this book. I apologize in advance for any typos. My husband is in the middle of reading this book for a second time and asked me what I thought. The comparison to The Princes Bride feel is real. This book is whimsical, magical and unique.
    ~The magic system- he imagined this world with the emerald sea, crimson sea, and midnight sea. The moons of different colors with spores coming down. I thought the world he made was so unique and well done.
    ~The love story. Tress being the heroine of the story is a great take on this kind of love story. The beginning of the book shows a very basic girl falling for a duke son impersonating a grounds keepers son. He gets taken away by his father the duke and sells him to a sorceress and brings back a cousin as his heir. Tress sets off to save him. She becomes a pirate, befriended the crew and learned how to do magic with spores. After a long journey she finally gets to her love. When she sees him for the first time she feels meh. Thinks that she has grown so much in her journey and he has not. That is a like real life relationship issues. But Tress was just picking up on the fact that the Charlie the witch was showing her wasn’t the real Charlie. The reveals in this book were so good.
    ~The reveals - The rat, the traitor, but not the traitor. I don’t want to say more about this. I don’t want to ruin it. The reveals are a few and make the story great.
    ~The dragon - When I realized that there was going to be a dragon in this book, I looked in the table of contents to see when I was going to read about it. I was greatly anticipating that part to see what the author was going to do with it. I was not disappointed. His depiction of the dragon was so well written I could see him in my head. Crow (the mean ship captain) and Tress end up battling each other for the dragons favor. Crow ended up inadvertently boosting about Tress and her accomplishments and ended up losing the battle. Crow ended up reaping her bad karma and ended up scrubbing floors just like Tress started out doing in the beginning of her pirate journey. I liked how Tress asked for three things from the Dragon to help her friends.
    ~The witch - the witch that was more technical than a traditional witch. Good twist to the proverbial witchy storyline.
    ~Hoid ~A CZcamsr, Michael Knip, created a video gushing about this book and I showed it to my husband and he let out a very unlike him exclamation when Michael mentioned Hoid. Apparently, he has been mentioned in other Brandon Sanderson books and my husband just realized it. His aha moment was so funny to me. I can’t wait to read Brandon Sanderson’s backlist. The only other Brandon Sanderson book I read was WarBreaker. “ Hoid was a comical character and also the narrator. “Hoid, why does Tress have this strange idea that you can be savin’ her?” “Probably,” I shouted over the rush of wind and spore, “because I just realized I should take up painting! And the Sorceress will be scared of my talent!” “You are so aggravating!” Ann said. Brandon Sanderson is so witty in this book. I laughed out loud many times.
    ~The illustrations. I bought the digital ebook and audiobook. The digital copy had beautiful depictions of the book. I tried adding a picture here but it didn’t work.
    ~The audio experience - I read and listened to the book. The audio was amazing. The voices made the book more alive than me just reading it on my own. Worth listening to the book. I highly recommend it.
    This book is now near and dear to my heart. I will be re-reading this many times. It is now on the level of my magical Harry Potter books that I re-read when I need a pick me up.

I think it probably helps that she also sorta looks like what I would imagine a mormon depiction of a happy young girl would be in one of their religious textbooks. Which isn't necesarily a bad thing. But yeah.. I find Brandon's writing to be a tad too YA'ish even in his stormlight books. So I doubt I will enjoy an actual YA books.
