The Golden EVA Spacesuit from Sunshine (2007)!

- The final spacesuit Adam checks out from Propstore CEO Stephen Lane's collection is the massive golden EVA suit from Danny Boyle's Sunshine. The hulking space suit's distinct golden finish and low-visibility funnel-shaped helmets were meant to protect the characters from solar radiation, and enhanced the sense of claustrophobia for its wearer. Adam and Stephen talk about the challenges of performing in a costume like this and show off details never seen on screen.

That is such a great design for a spacesuit, because it is clear what purpose it has and isn't just a bubble helmet on a jumpsuit. They put real thought behind it!
This whole movie is like that. The design at least.
Its a great drama film, the classic of Sci-fi, not only great design.
@@Trbrigade minus jump starting the sun. Realistic. The space ships I mean.
@@TheCaptainSplatterand gravity within the ship.
It manages to fit into the overall dramatic logic of the movie, too - it's big, and yet when facing the power of the Sun appears small, it's claustrophobic inside as a contrast to the vastness of the space outside, and it's a drastic solution to an extreme problem (the need to do outside work on a ship so close to the Sun), reflecting the Icarus itself.
Loving all the comments and Adam's coverage. I was an Art Director on Sunshine and yes Kenny was a reference that the Costume Designer, Suttirat Larlarb, used! I worked with Prop Shop on many productions so knew them well and for a few years operated their CNC router which I used to cut many elements for props and including the rings between the helmet and body, body and legs of the Sunshine space suit.
Man that's super cool! It's a shame a lot of these innovative and bizarre practical costume ideas for films have fallen out of style, miss those crazy costumes akin to the Power Ranger villains and whatnot. Nowadays it's either CGI, boring/cookie-cutout or too simple to be interesting.
Out of curiosity, since Stephen doesn't seem to know either: Was the Mylar bought in that folded pattern, or was the Mylar made specifically like that for the production?
Thanks for being a part of the golden age of movies (for me, at least), real inspiration for me!
did you have any input on the suit? why is the helmet shaped like that and the glass so small?
I guess Adam breaking something on the suit adds value to it?!
are you Stephen Morahan?
@@ggadams639 yes I am!
Such an under appreciated space horror movie.
It's inaudible, invisible and confusing. The critiques are justified.
@@flaggerify not much critiques, most like it. It's a good film.
Did a review on my channel about this film if you're interested! Love sunshine.
@@dr.lionhunter9988 Nice self-promo there! 🤣
@@RetroJack It's not easy for newcomers! Doing what I can lol
Incredible design. And film. My friend Mason calls it his favorite movie
Yeah but that guy would watch anything with Benedict Wong in it. He’s a real Wong-head.
7.2/10 on IMDB with 254K votes. Not bad. Guess I'm watching it. lol
It's my favorite thriller sci-fi even over moves like Alien.
The "final fight" is total garbage and ruins the entire movie tho. The movie could have gone without it, and it would be one of the best space sci-fi movies. Everything else in the movie is brilliant, I just don't understand why they had a 9 year old write the ending.
Hello James.
How many space suits do you have?
Man, I was just watching Sunshine a couple of days ago, and I immediately thought "Adam obviously should do a video on this suit...". The film, which is usually underrated, is a visual marvel, and the music... god, the music is from another planet! And those space suits, unique beauties designed not to be forgotten by the viewer, in my opinion they are also part of the history of costume design on films.
Adam, you never disappoint, thanks for doing this review!
Great film
The """"""""""""""""science"""""""""""""""""" is super stupid though and went to great lengths to be as stupid as possible and show that they don't care about science, so yeah, they were lucky not everybody was in the same anti science mood.
@@ThatOpalGuy It takes some depth of thought to appreciate. You are just here to learn after all...
@@lucashiroshins I've never talk about its science, just about the space suit design and the music. For a movie critic, I gladly go to another place/site/channel/group.
Is the science wonky? yes.
Does it take a strange unnecessary turn in the climax? Yeah. That as well.
But I do love the film as an experience. It is way more interesting and thought provoking than most big budget high minded stuff (looking at you, Nolan). And things like Kaneda's death is so powerful for my eyes and ears that I never fail to tear up.
It also was the first film that got me to take notice of Alex Garlands work in general. He writes sci fi in the way I really love. And when he got to direct movies himself, he really got to prove his methodology.
So, despite the scientific details, I will defend the script. But. It is highly subjective. Some, most, dont jive with it at all. And I can't say they are wrong for disliking it. All I can say is that it works really well for me.
One of my favorite movies - the scene where Capa’s pinned while in this trying to get to the payload is *nerve wracking*
Adam, you and the Mythbusters motivated me to study English 15 years ago. I've come a long way, now I teach English. It feels awesome to perceive you just as if you were speaking my native language. Thank you man
well said
This film blew me away. Saw it in the theater while visiting my brother; we sat quietly through the credits still absorbing it all, then the next night we went back to see it again. Never done that before or since with any other movie. Phenomenal music, brilliant movie, incredible cast. Love it to pieces.
One of my favorites movies of all time.
I think Chris Evans said not so long ago that Sunshine was the movie he had the most fun working on it. And my boy Cillian Murphy became an atheist during the production.
One less cultist in the world, even more reason to love the film!
I am so happy to finally see Mr. Savage talk about this suit! I saw this movie twice in theatres and absolutely love it. Sunshine may have a flawed third act but the rest of the movie is perfect. The cinematography, the designs, the cast, and the epic score all come together to make a rare science fiction gem. A lot of love was poured into that movie.
I agree. The first 2/3 of Sunshine is amazing, then the final act is dumb, then the ending brought me to tears. It's a hell of a movie. Come to think of it, there's a similar problem with with 28 Days Later and Devs, two other Danny Boyle stories, but I still really enjoyed those as well, and continue to look forward to anything he does.
@@hawaiidispenser 28 & Sunshine both written by Alex Garland who at that point was struggling with final act mood swings!! Best I can describe!
Got it right on Ex Machina & Annihilation though!
@@pyjama9556 Correct, I meant Alex but forgot his name! Ex Machina was genius and Annihilation was a mind trip. Loved them both.
All they had to do is not include a monster and the movie would be perfect. Such a dumb hollywood-esque way to ruin a good movie.
@@ThatOpalGuy Bold of you to openly admit that you forgot to watch the film.
My first thought was 'prehistoric Mondoshawan'.
The space suit is incredible, it's totally iconic. The film had a brilliant quote 'Kaneda what do you see?' A highly underrated movie.
Did a review on my channel about this film if you're interested! It's one of my favorite films. It's near perfection.
Quite a bit of this film was shot at the TV & Film studios where I work
Amazing film! Very thoughtful prop design, especially since it all had to make at least some sense scientifically. The ship ICARUS II has been a favorite of mine ever since I saw it
Even though the movie is completely nonsensical scientifically at least the team did a good job of trying to fix the nonsensical.
Sunshine is such an underrated film
It's because the third act was such a killer for the two acts that preceded it. I came home from the theatre feeling quite disappointed, and I'm one of those people that's really easy to please, too!
This is one of the coolest SciFi Spacesuits I've seen. I bought the DVD back then only because of this suit on the back.
I loved this movie and I am so happy you got to cover the suit from it. I knew it was special, but I had no idea the tribulations they went through with it on set.
It's the 'oh my god, they killed Kenny' spacesuit! :D
This series you are doing on his space suit collection is making me realise how much I have taken for granted or just not noticed in movies over the years. It is strange in that when you start to collect some props you then start to notice beyond what you see when watching the movie or else you have to watch it multiple times just to notice the incredible work that goes into costume and prop design.
Thanks for highlighting this suit. This has been one of my favorite films since I first saw it, and it's really heartening to see that I'm not alone in that. Most people I've talked about it with can't see past the two flaws it has and actually appreciate how masterful the rest of it is.
One of the most underrated Scifi movies. It is one of my all time favorite. Unique Story, stunning imagery and amazing soundtrack
One of my favorite movies. Very powerful and emotional. Great suit!
Sunshine is fantastic! Did a review on the film on my channel in case you're interested
@@dr.lionhunter9988 no one is lol
I must have recounted this story 100 times, but I watched Sunshine for the first time on an overnight ferry from Newcastle to Rotterdam. And you could feel the engines of the ship in the little makeshift cinema they had, and it felt like you were onboard Icarus 2. It was a proper 4D experience and one of my favourite film-going memories.
amazing story
@@L.L.2045 It was cool dude. Never took an overnight ship before. Pretty cool being out in the middle of the ocean in complete darkness.
Prof Brian Cox was an adviser for the movie. Cheers Adam.
someone listens to Monkey-Cage ;)
That whole EVA sequence is a masterpiece and probably the best part of the movie.
Loved this movie! The sets and science woven into the scrip was excellent. "I f***** up!" leading to the EVA with these suits was A+ special effects. Really believable movie making!
The mylar texture looks like it's actually pleat folded into it. This is difficult and time consuming. I'd love to know what origamist took on that challenge to create large, workable, tessellated sheets out of such a difficult folding medium. Amazing effect, almost scale like, and if you sink folded each top corner of each square, it would look like scales exactly: 2:07 and 4:08 and 5:56 although the pleat folding isn't done in squares on the helmet.
I absolutely love this movie, so it's amazing to see this suit up close.
I went to see Sunshine on a weeknight at a little arthouse theater in Minneapolis and was the only person in the theater for that showing. Seeing Kapa and Kaneda on the exterior of Icarus 2 in those suits swept me past suspension of disbelief. I found myself gasping and sweating, on the fine line between fascination and terror.
The screams Kaneda makes when he burns up are unforgettable, music is very well done too at that point.
I would absolutely loved to have seen that movie in a cinema... it's such an audio visual spectacle. And to see it alone... perfect :P
@@DodderingOldMan I had also partaken of the Devil's Lettuce 🌴on the way from the parking lot, so it was especially surreal 👨🚀
I'm glad to see this suit is still around. Sunshine doesn't get enough attention as it should.
So cool! I absolutely loved this movie. I was lucky enough to actually see it in theaters, but it's absolutely worth a watch if you've never seen it. I recommend a dark room and a big screen and loud speakers.
Same. Was a huge Danny Boyle fan. Was kinda cool to see Chris Evans turn to better and serious actor
Love this movie. 👍 Sunshine.
Sunshine is a desperately under appreciated movie.
Hardley..it puts the cheese in cheesy. Lol
One of my favourite space movies
One of my favorite movies of all time! My wife tells me there's one in a museum up in Seattle, so now I have to go and see one in person.
"I can re-build anything I break". I think that's the dream of all craftsmen
Sunshine was such a great, criminally underrated movie.
My favourite thing about this movie is that Brian Cox was the scientific advisor, and made quite a few changes to the script and plot.
Absolutely love this film and the suit is such an iconic build, feels a like like the Bioshock big daddy in space. You can also check it out in person at the Science Museum in London at the Sci-Fi expo they have, feels super intimidating up close
Sunshine is a great movie, thanks for the insight!
I absolutely loved this movie. It's incredible the amount of thought and care they put into this suit.
Love it! I always though it was pretty cool idea. (speaking as one who once worked on next generation space suits). For future reference, for high heat areas, you don't make plates, you directly etch or mill the surface with text. The thermal differential between the plates, the fasteners and the materials surfaces all have different CTEs and during extreme heat, those fasteners tend to break.
I'm sorry, but someone has got to say it. Those are Adidas Superstars, Shell Toes!
I normally don't really get too inspired by space suits in media, but WOW. This thing blows me away.
All the tech in that film is fascinating!
I love the soundtrack to this movie.
One of my favorite movies...thanks for this surprise Tested.
A fantastic underrated Sci-Fi movie and awesome to see props like this survived! Thank you for sharing!
One of the creepiest and most unsettling movie moments in all of cinema is when they first board the Icarus II, and images momentarily flash on the screen, almost too fast to see. It ends up being cropped portions of the Icarus II crew photo showing each member, but the lighting and color of each photo along with the tension of the moment makes for a deeply unsettling scene, you don't know what's going to happen.
I really like this suit. It´s by far one of my favorite scifi space suit. One reason for that is, that it´s very ugly. And not in a bad way. It´ßs ugly in a "has to be this way to work" kind of way that makes it quiet realistic. It really creates this feeling of funktion over form. From the folded metalised mylar that hints at it having the task of scattering and blocking the infrared radiation balasting the suit and isolating against it, by the way gold star for them choosing gold here, as gold is the most reflective material in the infrared spectrum. To the giant visor that sticks out so far like it houses an array of complex filters and shades to deal with the changin light levels from quiet dark to insanely bright. The large hard parts of the suit meant to house life suport and a large cooling system. Its absolutely wonderful.
Yes this suit represents the ultimate mission: can it stop someone being cooked by the sun. Very cool.
I found out about this movie because Underworld did the score, and it became one of my favorites. The use of color and lighting was really well done.
Sunshine is such an underrated film, the emotion and connection with our star is on full display, its power and its danger, but its life and its glory
One of the best movies ever made. My best friend, my wife, and I dropped acid and watched it. (The wife and I had seen it before, but my buddy hadn’t.) Would I recommend doing so by yourself? Definitely not, but when you can sit with friends and make jokes about what’s onscreen while internally having an enormous existential crisis seeing all the wide shots of nothing but empty space and the ship, go for it. It’s incredibly well acted, and one of the greatest visual treats of all time. The scene with Kaneda on the shield… *chef’s kiss*
The tech has become so realistic, and it blows the past replica suits away!
That's an awesome piece of art behind the suit. Eagle from Space 1999 I think
I'm in love of this suit design since I saw the movie back in the day. Amazing. Dream come true seeing Adam checking all of the details on it.
The score, is incredible. The premise and plot to the movie is incredible, the filmography is incredible. The film really spoke to me when I was younger and since then Sunshine will always be my favourite movie
I loved that movie. It's one of the best, in my opinion. seeing the suit prop is very cool
I'm surprised it took this long for Adam to do a video for this suit. It has to be the most quirky space suit since Aliens.
The rigidity makes sense imo. It's a better representation than those floppy suits.
Sunshine - such an underrated movie.
Fun fact: "Pinbacker" was inspired by the character of Sergeant Pinback from John Carpenter's movie Dark Star.
The character Pinback from Dark Star was played by Dan O'Bannon who wrote the screenplay for Alien.
Sunshine is near the top of my space movie list...neat concept, great execution, and good sound and design on that flick.
Man, Adam lives his best life. He is always doing amazing things he loves. 🎉
Still one of my favourite Sci Fi spacesuits.
My absolute all time favorite movie. Happy to see this suit showcased :)
I love this movie and these suits. The scene where they come into play is just so damn good. Really cool bts insights in this
I recall that on the production blog back in the day they did say that Kenny from South Park was one of the references for the design!
Someday, I really hope to see Adam take on a long term design exercise with all of his space suit replica and cosplay cohorts of creating an original reality based next-gen space suit. Maybe a series or suits for different purposes/environments.
Sure, fittings and parts would be 3D resin and not titanium and such but seeing how far they could get with hobby level materials and off-the-shelf parts would be fascinating.
Please Adam, let that space suit addiction loose.
One of my favorite movies. Cillian Murphy such an underrated actor
Sunshine one of my favourite space movies with amazing soundtrack.
Incredible spacesuit design.
Sunshine is one of my top favorite films of all time!
This movie Sunshine is so underrated and forgotten it's nuts. The suit, though, isn't to protect people too close to the sun. Moreso it's supposed to be able to withstand momentary extreme conditions as the ship and crew move nearer if they need a spacewalk.
Wow it looks even more menacing in real life
wow the film is still one of the wierdest and best of its era
Great suit and great film.
I liked the distress call they played in the background and at the end with the credits. I even made it into my mobile phone ring tone !
Rose Byrne was particularly memorable too !
Sunshine was a great movie. This reminds me that I need to watch it again.
Sunshine is such an awesome flick. Probably one of my top SciFi movies of all time right up there with Abyss and Alien.
Just a fantastic film.
Top 5 favorite sci fi movies. Amazing for Adam to bring his viewers' attention to it and the beauty of the craftsmanship of the suits from that film. Obviously see it if you haven't!
Next, I need to see this suit taken apart. I want to see everything about it!
I absolutely loved this film as a kid
Fantastic suit and amazing movie.
(Does anyone know anything about the 'Space 1999 Eagle' poster behind them? looks like an Apollo era style homage poster but I'd love to know more about it)
One of my favorite movies. ❤
"Kaneda, what do you see? Kaneda, what can you see?"
It is nice to see, that Stephen Lang is more and more relaxed in those videos...
I love how everything about that suit is just over the top in size and bulk for projecting the wearer from the sun...except the gloves. Your hands would be the first to vaporize! But I guess they had to be able to grab things...
gotta love the variety of acronyms this name comes with
I loved the first time I saw this in Sunshine. Being a nerd I of course overanalyzed it and saw issues but I loved that they did really go all out on trying to convey that it was based on solid reasoning relative to the parameters they were facing. It's very realistic in this regard. I often hate how people piss on realism in sci-fi because they attack the last 2% with all their energy and it's like bitch fuck off you watch Marvel movies go away. They really did make a lot of Sunshine very grounded, some bits more than others, and yeah there were holes like in all sci-fi but in a general sense it was definitely within the domain of hard grounded.
I need to watch this again.
Prop Shop and Prop Store lot of creativity in the names
Now I can’t stop seeing Kenny in this suit. 😂
This film is underrated!
sunshine is one of my favourite movies ever
I love Sunshine, an underrated film.
The movie is underrated
(Soundtracks were nice too)
Austin Powers' 'Goldmember' wants his suit back!
This suit when you look it at the front, it has some seriously cool BioShock "Big Daddy's" suit vibes. Minus the rust, the drill and not so much diving suit details, just on the bulkiness.
I need to rewatch Sunshine again...
Great movie, highly underrated. These suits were definitely a highlight of the show as well.
Sunshine! One of my favorite and underrated movies, amazing to see by close the suit, amazing design
One of Danny Boyle's best films
