I read a comment on a Gojira video that sums them up perfectly. It essentially said that Gojira is like wine. The first time you try it, it tastes bitter, but there's enough of a hook to make you try it again. Before you know it you are a full on connoisseur. Just like you, it was the vocals that initially put me off, but I persevered, and I have been richly rewarded for sticking with them. I am now a fully fledged member of the cult of Gojira.

I like it. Another favorite of mine that I read somewhere is that Gojira can only be described as having elements of death metal because no one has coined the term "life metal" yet. I love the juxtaposition of the spiritual and environmental themes and the beauty of life with the crushing heaviness of this band.

Vacuity doesn't get enough love from these reaction vids imo, the ones that do react to it do the music video which happens too quick for me. You gotta listen to the drone riff before the vocals kick in.

Try Flying Whales next, Jim!! Joe Duplantier has a really good vocal style for easing into the heavier stuff. It's introductory but also heavy enough to be loved by metal enthusiasts. Mario Duplantier is one of the most amazing metal drummers out there and i'm happy you can pick out his rhythms. Good stuff!

I really believe Gojira is the kind of band that focuses on making good ALBUMS. The songs are good individually, but take on a whole other level when you listen to the album front to back. That's why I really love Global Warming. It's the perfect ending track for that album, but I can really see why it's the totally wrong song to get into Gojira with.

      @ErimlRGG Před 5 lety +1

Cool to see you giving them another chance! One of my favourite heavy bands :) There are many tracks to recommend:
The Art of Dying (Long-track), Flying Whales (a classic), L'enfant Sauvage (one of their most known songs), Explosia (for some insane groove and western-style guitar), Gift of Guilt (epic live video with apocalyptic feeling to it) - and many more of course. Enjoy the ride!

It's crazy how many different recommendations you get from Gojira fans, how everyone's opinions differ on one different band.
Usually with bands the requests can be somewhat unanimous, but with Gojira a lot of people recommend so many different tracks.
If I was to lean towards the next one it would certainly be flying whales.
I think it's fantastic and showcases a lot of what this band are capable of in one track.

Getting past the vocals was the first step to not only accepting them but even enjoying them fully with real Metalhead enthusiasm. I understand the earlier reactions you had. I was the same when I first heard so much Metal. I actually have a harder time appreciating middling clear vocals than full throttle Death Metal growls now. Gojira, Opeth, Anathema, Orb. Megadeath. Not bad list. Death is a great band although the singing is a high pitched screech I've come to love and they are considered the fathers of Death Metal and one of the greatest. try them out. Or if not ready try the guitarist-composer-singer's other band Control Denied with a more classic Metal vocalist. Also excellent.

Such an under rated tricky song on the kit. Mario is such a beast. I think you might be ready for The art of dying by them. That truely is one of the hardest songs I’ve heard to play on the kit. Yes I know Thomas Hawke is probably no1 but Mario surely is right up there for that top spot. Once you do The art of dying, do Esoteric Surgery which follows on from TAOD on the album.

Jim, you came at Gojira exactly the right way... when you were ready. And now that you're ready, whet your appetite on Flying Whales and then feast on The Art of Dying.

For something a bit more mellow or Tool-oriented try "Magma" or "The Shooting Star". I'd suggest "Wolf down the Earth" or "Art of Dying" for more prog elements and their absolute standout track is "Flying Whales" which features one of the greatest riffs in Metal history and very catchy. Since you mentioned ISIS I think it's time for you to experience the transcendent power of Alcest's music. Please try "Kodama" or "Eclosion" to begin with.

I know i've already commented but if you enjoy metal and the more melodic part of it you have to listen to Insomnium(their latest album) And Be'lakor! Please, Please, Please you have too give it a try, Melodic Death Metal is the thing for you from what i gathered of your reaction from this. There's nothing else like it. I sincerely hope you read this comment. I'm definitely subscribing if you're keeping up this content

If you wanna push your limits a bit further, I’d love to see you do Amenra - A Solitary Reign. Band has been slept on for years but they’re gaining a cult following. They’re making some of the most beautifully devastating music out there.

Not sure if you read comments on old videos, but I would love to see a whole vinyl listen of a Gojira album in your newest format. It is hard to recommend one, but I have picked up their latest, Fortitude and it would be a great listen as it has been highly accepted and rewarded. From Mars to Sirius (still waiting on shipping) is a masterpiece, and I have recently taking a liking to L'Enfant Sauvage and ordered that one too. It is on the heavier side and typically a double LP, where Fortitude is typically found in single LP. I am sure the next album I really dive into will be loved just as much as the others, they are just that amazing.

Hmm, still getting into this... do like the idea of a podcast; hopefully without the compression YT use (I hear that crackle so often on YT vids).
Thinking of picking up Mike Ostrich's fallen mantle? His Progscape Radio was the giant of prog podcasts until last year. Some streams still up... OK, try (WARNING! 3hrs long): www.progscaperadio.com/podcasts/PSR_0666.mp3 and see progscaperadio.com/current.php for what is on each podcast. All good fun!
